I am not being sarcastic . . . you laid it down . . . after this post I think there is no more need to talk about this subject any longer . . . Danny . . . For me, what is disturbing is not the number of posts that have focused on aspects of Jewel's beauty, but the ones like this one condemning such posts. You condemned threads like the "WONKY TOOTH" thread as being superficial. I am going to infer from this accusation that you see such discussion as objectifying Jewel, reducing her to nothing more than her component parts. But I am certain that anyone who is posting here, particularly some of the regulars who have contributed to, or maybe even started these posts, *are aware of Jewels talent and work. If we were to consider Jewel as nothing more than her music and her performance, we would be objectifying Jewel in just as limiting and perhaps more dangerous way than if we were to see has as just another piece of a**. I say more dangerous because we have more respect for someone's creative efforts than for what is usually a god/goddess/fate-given appearance. But to consider Jewel only for her music or lyrics is to divorce a part of her (albeit a large and an important one) from the whole of herself. I am a fan of *Jewel* not just her music. To be honest there are certain songs that can get on my nerves (I'm not going to mention any names on this one). I believe that as a fan of Jewel I am a fan of all facets of who Jewel is. Jewel is a talented singer, songwiter, performer, poet, storyteller. She is also "a fine piece 'o woman," a photogenic star, a blonde bombshell. She is also a daughter a friend, a sister, a lover. She is also an icon, a sex symbol, an incredibly publicized person Who Jewel is includes social consciousness and pure sillyness. Who Jewel is includes perfect hair and a wonky tooth. Who Jewel is includes my intellectual response and my hormonal reaction. If one were to send a post on this mailing list about who Jewel is, it would not be solely lyrics and guitar tabs, nor would it be solely interfiews and anecdotes, nor would it be JPEGs and GIFs. It would be all of these and in all likelyhood such a post would crush every major ISP with its magnatude. This is not only true for Jewel it is true for everyone. As I once told a friend "I don't want to be loved for my mind and not my body, I want to be loved for my mind AND my body." Through the hundreds of people on this list reading about, writing about, thinking about, and most importantly *loving* Jewel I have learned more about her than I ever could if I listened to every performance of every song that Jewel has ever written. That is why I joined this list, and that is why I am proud to be associated with it. [Kneep! breathes deeply and looks out at his large virtual audience. Subject: my eda duty Greetings fellow Angels, i waited a week or so to post this message cause i wasn`t sure if i had to do it,but i am now. Last friday night,i went to get my busted amp at Steve`s music store, cause i had a gig the day after. When i came back,i decicded to log on the internet.I checked icq,and saw one of my that best friend was on.So initiated the chat procedure,i knew i had to go to bed early cause i had a gig tomorrow,so i said to myself:"No more than half an hour.".At least that`s what i thought. Now you see my best friend is 43,im 16.She`s an alchoolic. When i first saw her writing that night on icq,i saw that she was drunk. So i decided to cut a deal with her.I said to her:"I can last longer than that bottle of yours."I dared her.She accepted. So i spent all night, til the sun came up the day after chatting about everything. We laughed,we cried. She let me in her life, she told me how hard it was for her to live. She told her story, you know, her life. She once was on drugs, now she`s alchoolic. But most of all,she felt alone.Every time she let someone in her life, they always disapear or hurt her.She drinks to forget that she`s alone,to forget her past. But that night she didn`t need that bottle, cause i was there, she didn`t have to drink to feel alone, cause i was there. She needed a shoulder to lean on to.Somebody who that she could trust with her life. That night i was that person, and i still am.That night was strange, no,but really strange.I think the fact that she gave herself completely to me,that she letted me in her thoughts,i her being changed me.I dont think the same way.Now the Bible makes sense.I enjoyed spending the night with her.I enjoyed helping. It helped her,but it helped me.Through helping others we understand why we are here on earth,we undrstand the meaning of our life.I understanded mine. If i ever get another chance like that someday,i`ll seize it.And i think,no,im sure that`s what Jewel wants us to do.Not only Jewel, but God himself. If you ever get the oportunity to help someone in need, dont hesitate to sacrifice your time or money or wathever,do it.It feels good.It really feels good. lotsa love L.a.e.a. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 1997 13:04:12 -0400 (EDT) From: JonBoy911@aol.com Subject: Re: Read This And You'll Be Sorry........ Ok guys...I am totally pulling my hair out at this point..but don't fret..things will progress! As of this point, I am anxiously awaiting a call back from various campsites in the San Diego and Los Angeles area. If anyone knows of open campgrounds and can make reservations...please do so! At this point, it looks pretty booked! I have a call into Joe (of Java Joes) to see what he could offer us. As of this point, most of my ideas, compiled from the feedback, center around allowing everyone to experience the San Diego life style that Jewel herself did, and somewhat continues to do. I have plans to take a Jewel Tour if you will, to the place where her van was parked, the Innerchange, Java Joes, and other coffee shops where she performed, as well as surfing at the beach breaks that she did. You see, living on the beach is a completely different lifestyle that cannot simply be described to anyone. You HAVE to experience it to understand. And that is what I am offering you. Perhaps if you all live on the beach, and in these tight knit communities that are very territorial for a weekend, you will better understand the essence of Jewels music. You will begin to see that her lifestyle, the San Diego one, is quite validated by the way people operate by the beaches. The attitude of calmness, and surreal lingering that she writes about can only be fully understood through experience. I am rambling now. At any rate, please stay tuned! I am doing the best I can with limited resources, especially time! I am sure it is going to be a blast! We have EDA's coming from many places...that are looking forward to meeting everyone! Again, if you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to write or call! Mike will be posting sign-up instructions by this weeks end & I hope all who do sign up enjoy the tapes. (Please do not reply to me & keep an eye out for Mike's free signup instructions later this week) What follows is a repost of the info explaining what the "Future Folklore" tapes are & track listings. Best wishes! Alan(MrBB) I'd like to take this opportunity to explain my new project called "Future Folklore". There's been many great EDA parties around the country. Some of these had incredible entertainment provided by other San Diego area musicians such as The Rugburns, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel & Gregory Page. (All friends of Jewel, by the way) In the case of the Hot Dog Festival (HDF), thrown by the Morales Family in Dana Point, Ca, Steve & Jeff (aka Stinky) from The Rugburns dropped by & played a short but wonderfully unique set. There's many brand new songs & those who were there can testify it was quite unlike any Rugburns show of late. Shortly after that, an impromtu EDA Cafe (EDAC) was thrown together at The Snyder family's home in Boston,Ma. Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel cancelled a gig in Albany & joined us for an incredible night of music & EDA hilarity. I'm sure Cindy Lee & Elizabeth will agree it was a highlight of their tour. It was certainly the longest gig of the tour! (I'd also like to say that any hardcore "Pet Sounds/Smile era Brian Wilson" fans will be absolutely blown away by Cindy Lee's new "keyboard" material. I personally love "Antarctica", "Family Tree","Aquamarine" & "She Won't Even Try" more than any other songs I've heard by anyone this year. I mean it, too!) We plan on distributing (free of charge, of course) the 1st two volumes of a new ongoing tape tree series that will contain all the performances from both of these events. These particular EDA events are becoming legendary & thus the name "Future Folklore"..... These recordings will be different than the elaborate authorized Jewel recordings that we've treed in the past. Both of these events were recorded without the use of a mixing desk & are more reflective of the actual events. The music is still crystal clear but you also hear the EDA interaction (as well as the birds & ocean at HDF!). Tegan Godwin made the "ambiant" HDF recording & its really quite nice & captures some of the spirit of this historically significant EDA gathering. At EDAC, Phil Kelnhofer & I collaborated on last minute equipment, but it worked out well. We ran a seperate mic on vocals, one on instruments & one on the room so everything was captured clearly. (If any techies are curious about the recording techniques utilized, write to me privately.) Its also important to note that the musicians have all been incredibly generous enough to authorize the release of these recordings for this project. I have two goals for this project: I certainly hope to turn more EDAs on to these other San Diego artists. They can all benefit from our continued support. But more than that, I want to share a little of that "x factor" that happens when EDAs get together. There's something very special going on that I want to see continued. Lovable Lawyer Larry said it best: "We all began as fans of Jewel & then became fans of each other". Mike Connell is gonna take the big plunge & will administrate this free tape tree. Dennis Harris did j-card design & they're mind blowing, as usual. He was at both events & had photos from both to incorporate into the j-card graphics. These first two volumes of "Future Folklore" will consist of two 90 minute cassettes. Instructions will be posted in a few days & then sign-up will begin. (Please wait for these instructional posts BEFORE requesting copies or volunteering participation in this tree.) Following this message is the layout & track listings. This music is really something special. If this is successful, I'm willing to donate my resources to continue this series on an ongoing basis. I'm hoping "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2 will be enthusiastically recieved. If nothing else, I sincerely hope this series will help encourage more events like this in the future. Well, one time when I asked last week the woman working said that she thought it was too slow to play. She said that they love Jewel's two other releases but not Foolish Games. I went off. It was request hour, and she gets payed to play my request. It's radio stations like this that wonder why it took so long for Jewel to hit it big. It's because of people like them. "Clooney SUCKED. its a fact he was the worse." Actually, I believe that's called an opinion. I don't think any of the three batmen were "better" than the one another...I just think the parts in all four movies were scripted differently...they all had their pros and cons. Val Kilmer had the dark, brooding thing going on. ..you could tell his past was haunting him, you know? I liked that. Then George was friendly, but not as lighthearted as Michael Keaton. Keaton was a good Batman...but Batman's supposed to be darker, IMHO. I dunno...just MY two cents. I guess in my opinion, if you combine all three of these guys' characters, you have the perfect Batman :). - -JC ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Jul 1997 18:03:34 -0700 From: Connie Subject: 4 everyone dat helped me *********************LAST MINUTE NEWS*********************************** Im gonna see him on October.... im going to Colombia...... lets see how things work out.... I find > CLB > very monotone, and without much to say. She strikes me as a typical strung > out hippie wannabe who's drug use is affecting her existence in her music > and > her personality. Man-D, Your reference to Cindy's drug use is totally unfounded. I have seen Cindy countless times and have always talked to her before or after shows. She is always clearheaded and has a sharp mind. Besides loving her music, I have found her personality charming. On one occasion, I gave her some negative feedback about her show. She didn't bark back and seemed to appreciate my opinion. I know I tried to stuff Cindy down your throat during our long ride to Santa Maria. That was wrong. There is nothing wrong with you not liking her music. It is your opinion. But the drug comments go beyond opinion and are completely unfounded. At least you don't have anything bad to say about Elizabeth Hummel or Gregory Page. Maybe I shouldn't have even brought it up. So is hosting a LRT out of the question? Igor ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #539 ***************************
