I just think that Jewel seems to have a certain spark in her that a lot of people-not all- but a lot of people don't have. It's the kind of spark that shows her love and feeling of what she is doing. They were both indeed true movie stars, making movies over 40 years each respectively. They stared in by far some of the most moving and well made movies of the 20th century. They were both capable of playing all sides of the emotions and both had a real down to earth feel to their acting abilities. If you are too young to have watched any of their work or havn't seen a lot of it, it is well worth your time to search out the movies and give them a watching. Next time you go Blockbuster, pick yourself a movie with either of them. You won't be sorry. Again I just want to express my sadness at their deaths. They have left a great body of work and you should enjoy every spilt second you can of it. She's a wonderful artist, as all EDAs know, and as more and more people around the world are finding out. If the Klaatunians want to hear her sing before a fleet of their spaceships, and Gianny can arrange it (welcome back my compatriate!), I'd say -- You go girl! The Beatles, the musical act that probably had to deal with popularity more than any other pop artist(s), stopped playing before live crowds and entered the most creative, the most-far reaching, and the most musically profound stage of their careers. The world was richer for it. The world is better off that Bob Dylan advanced beyond playing in Greenwich Village coffeehouses and became the "voice of a generation". Let's appreciate and enjoy every step of Jewel's lustrous career. "no, it wasn’t" "yes it was" of course, our only glimpse of tara was the promo poster in the bar window, so no one really knew how she looked in person. steve decided to go inside and find out if tara was there yet. the guy at the door said she just walked in two seconds ago. "i was right!" "so, why didn’t you say anything?" "cause you guys didn’t say anything!" ack! well, i went into the bar to see if i could talk to tara. i mainly wanted to get a cd from her, but also wanted to see what she could do about steve. i was directed to ron sexsmith’s representative, told her i wanted to talk to tara, get a cd, and mentioned that i was an eda. she went backstage to tell tara. tom and jen walked in, asked what was going on, and i told them. the lady came out again…alone. didn’t look good. "do you know where the backdoor is?" "no" "well, follow me, i’ll take you there. tara was excited that edas are here" woo hoo!!!! the four of us followed her around back to where tara’s manager, dave, was waiting. we introduced ourselves and he was very cool. he then led us inside where tara was sitting down with her guitar. we all made our introductions and it was all too cool. tara decided to play us a song since she was warming up. she played "If Only" and it was beautiful. she was going to open up with it, so we were going to hear it twice. yeah! then we asked if she was selling cds. she was for $10 each. i gave her $30 for me, jen and tom, but since there were four of us, she gave us four cds! wow! steve made off with a free cd. of course, she signed them, too. heh heh. we then explained the situation with steve, and tara and dave were kind enough to sneak him in through their entrance. yeah! so, tom, jen, and i went back to the front, paid $5 again, and grabbed four seats in front of the stage. tara and steve walked in, and steve quickly walked down to his empty seat. tara then played a great 8 song set, which just amazed me. she has a beautiful, huge voice that comes out of such a small body. i then talked to dave, who was selling cds, and signed his tara mailing list, which jen, tom, and steve also did. we hung around for ron sexsmith’s set for a few songs, but finally took off for jen’s apartment. we were dead tired, but stayed up god knows how long on the computer. scary, eh? guess we weren’t going to elkmont tonight. oh well. - -- Crash Boy's EDA Page --- http://thespis.com/crashboy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jul 1997 16:16:18 -0400 From: David McCluskey <6djm@qlink.queensu.ca> Subject: Attn: Canadians Happy Canada Day! Thursday, Jun 19th - left for steve’s (groovylime) house on staten island around 7am. after getting a bit lost, i finally arrive a little after 7:30am. we stuff my car with his stuff and take off for tom miles’ place in ephrata, pa, where we will throw our stuff into his car and drive his car to texas. it’s a pretty simple 2 hour drive to his place, and his directions were pretty cool, but along the way, i had to go the bathroom really bad. so, we get to tom’s apartment to see a sign on the outside of it that read "EDA’s Steve and Eric". cool! that’s gotta be his apartment. we go in and there’s a note on the door saying that he just stepped out to the bank. ack! i REALLY had to go to the bathroom NOW. so, we waited for about 15 minutes in front of his apartment. after dancing around for a while, i finally shook off my urge to go, but i had to shake off a cop who was going to give me a parking ticket, because the meter had expired. i wasn’t planning on parking it long before pulling it into tom’s parking spot for his apartment, so i didn’t put any money in. well, the cop was nice enough to let me go, and tom showed at the same time. cool! steve tackled him with a bear hug, and we got everything packed into his car…barely. after parking my car in his spot, and grabbing my cds for the road trip, we finally took off to…the mall! there, we said good-bye to tom’s fiancee, vicki, and her totally hot co-worker, mandy. (tom, hook me up!) i also bought a pair of kiddie walkie talkies for hopes of staying in contact with the other car that we were driving with on the way down. next stop, york, pa, where christina ferrara, her roommate, kate, kate’s bf, jason, and jason’s friend, brian, were to be at christina and kate’s apartment. but jason and brian hadn’t shown up yet. oops. great. after waiting about an hour, they showed up, packed up, and we were off! finally! but we had to stop by a gas station to fuel up. *twiddling thumbs patiently* then we were finally off! woo hoo!!!! drove through gettysburg, then through maryland slightly, then west virginia, then virginia, where we stopped in buchanan for dinner. first we stopped for fuel at a gas station where a burger king was conveniently next to, so i figured we’d eat there. so i bought my meal combo #1, only to discover that everyone was going to the diner up the street. ack! so, i brought along my whopper deal to the diner, and ate my fast food while everyone ate home cooked meals. bleh. the cook jokingly sent me a note that read "we don’t allow people to eat food in here bought in other places." heh. funny. we finally took off again, but i was behind the wheel of tom’s car now, to give him a slight rest. big mistake. used to my sporty little celica, i kinda pushed his a car a bit, and after two hours, we stopped in tennessee where tom’s car’s radiator started to leak profusely. ack! after spending 30 minutes figuring out whether or not his car was screwed, it turned out to be okay. but tom wasn’t going to let me drive it again. i felt really bad. really, really, really bad. oh well. but tom’s car was okay, and so was brian’s, so we took off again. - -- Crash Boy's EDA Page --- http://thespis.com/crashboy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jul 1997 23:17:52 -0400 From: Crash Boy Subject: (2) My Rockfest story Friday, June 20th - i was awake and asleep and awake and asleep throughout the night. tom slightly nodded off a couple times, but was saved by vicki calling at 3:30am to see how things were going. we stopped in the middle of the night in some gas station in tennessee where christina bought a deck of cards with naked guys on it, which i think still lies in tom’s glove compartment. tom, better get rid of it before vicki finds it! heh heh. i woke up around 6:30am to find that tom had lost track of brian’s car, which had taken off a few hours earlier. great. well, we were in memphis and decided to eat. we woke up steve, ate at mcdonald’s, and continued on. luckily, we got a call from christina, and they happened to be across the mississippi in arkansas eating breakfast. we drove over and were reunited and it felt so good. after driving through some intense heat, which totally sucked, we made it to the texas motor speedway around 5:30pm. after driving around aimlessly, we found angela and her bf, daniel. we found a nice spot to camp, and derrick and his cousin, sean, drove right past us! steve, tom, and i ran down his car, said out hello’s, and derrick drove back to our spot. christina and friends took off to find us a better campsite where we could fit ourselves and farr’s RV, which was to arrive later. dan stark, his friend, pete, and tien (pronounced "tin") showed up and we decided to find a better place to camp since we discovered that we weren’t allowed where we had parked. we finally found a great open spot, and dan, pete, and tien, showed up after walking across the huge campground. we got out blankets and saved space for the RV. we started to enjoy ourselves when we were told that we weren’t supposed to park there anyway. ack! major suckage, since we had made ourselves comfortable. luckily, christina called and told us they had found a spot. so we packed up again, and made our way over. this time, dan and pete rode on top of tom’s car, cause there was no way they were going to walk across the parking lot again. tien and i were cramped in the backseat and nearly died of suffocation. nice way to start rockfest, eh? heh heh. we found christina and laid down our tents next to theirs. derrick and angela made their tents across the street, and we reserved a nice big spot for the RV. by this time, it was around 8pm, we were majorly hungry, but were determined to wait ‘til farr brought all the nice food he promised. but since we had time, we took off into the speedway to take a listen to who was playing. whoever it was finished when we got in, but duncan sheik came on soon afterward, and everyone thanked him by…moshing? yes, people were moshing to duncan sheik! ack! after dealing with this for about two songs, tom got a call from farr, meaning that he was near, so we walked back to our spots, where we met andy wang! how the hell andy found us, i’ll never know. never. but we talked, and his very informative and insightful. finally, the RV arrived! woo hoo!!! tom came out, because he had taken off earlier talking to farr on the phone trying to guide him to where we were. then mia came out. i screamed "MIA!!!" ran over to her, stepped on her foot, and hug her madly. then everyone came over and said their hello’s. turns out farr’s friend, jessica, and ashe mayfair were in the RV, too. cool! then we all got into the RV (i.e. heaven) and parked into the reserved spot. immediately, farr got out the charcoal, pictures were taken, people were talking, and now we were having a gathering. woo hoo!!! we ate burgers and dogs, and drank soda and water and gatorade. mmmm…it was all so good. and farr was kind to cook over a hot grill during a hot texas night. after 2 days stuck in a car, i took the first shower in the RV in one minute! that’s right! one minute! there was no water hookup for the RV on the speedway campgrounds, so we had limited water in the amount that was in the RV’s tank. so, showers were limited to a minute. no problem. taking that one minute shower was refreshing enough. before i took my shower, i grabbed my clothes and stuff out of tom’s car to bring into the RV and heard lots of loud noise from around the campsite. cool! i thought. gonna have to check it out later. well, after my shower was done i discovered that bill and carrie had shown up. yeah! then mia finished cleaning up the mess in the RV, the two of us took off to check out the fun. people were everyone having fun and drinking it up. i was drinking it up, too, thanks to dan and his beer run an hour later. people were on top of cars that were driving around, high fiving each other, and pretty much having a good time. but with so many young men and women around, the hormones were a buzzing, and soon chants of "take it off!" and "shows us your ____!" were being screamed from the guys to the girls, and the girls complied! woo hoo!!! the rockfest tailgate party had turned into a sexfest. i dragged mia along for a while to watch more female removal of clothing, but she was a bit tired of it after a while (heh heh), and we went back to the RV. i needed another beer anyway, and dragged farr with me on my next outing and saw more of the same. after another half hour or so of it, farr had to take the RV to refill the water tank and get rid of the grey water, so i grabbed another beer and dragged tom on my next outing. we saw more this time and then some. this girl took off all her clothes! damn! and she must’ve taken them off and put them on and taken them about 3 or 4 times, to the cheers of 300-400 guys each time. tom and i were separated by this point by the huge throng of guys oogling at this girl, and when it was over, i walked around a bit, then got back to the RV, which was still gone, but tom, bill, and carrie were there. we hung out for a bit, but after a while, i walked around the sexfest again. then the RV came back, everyone enjoyed themselves again, and jessica went to find her friends, who were thought to be mistakingly on the other side of the speedway. me, tom, jess, and this guy she met, drove around for a good hour to no avail. after sitting in the traffic forever, we finally mad it back and crashed for the next day. - -- Crash Boy's EDA Page --- http://thespis.com/crashboy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jul 1997 23:28:39 -0500 From: Jessica Subject: Re: NJC: James Stewart (1908-1997) Ben Simpelo wrote: > > For those who didn't know yet, James Stewart, a Hollywood legend and one > of my favorite actors has died today of cardiac arrest in his home in > Beverly Hills. Monday, June 23rd - woke up, and used the campsites shower facilities. thank god! steve had the crazy idea that we should do laundry on a camping trip, so tom, steve, and i were holed up in the camp laundry room for an hour and a half while christina and friends took off for the second campsite at nachez trace in tennessee. tom, steve, and i finished, and arrived there just as christina and friends had gotten there. we found a spot, pitched tents, and made ourselves comfortable. then tom, steve, and i headed into town for supplies and dinner. got back, cooked, and talked. after dinner, tom and i made another run for ice and other assorted items. after missing exits cause we’re stupid, we finally made it back just as everyone was about to hit the hay. tom, steve, and i stayed up for a few hours longer drinking, talking, and singing songs. it’s fun telling a guitar player the chord changes while trying to sing a song and drinking a beer. try it some time! finally, we called it a night and slept in our tents. - -- Crash Boy's EDA Page --- http://thespis.com/crashboy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Jul 97 00:52:48 PDT From: "Beth" Subject: Re: Pro-Popularity Idiocy - ---------- Sean wrote: > Oh, and then there was the guy who said that Jewel was living in vans and > doing meaningless jobs cause she wanted to be famous sopmeday, wrong. I was at the Beacon show in March where she was > thoroughly disrespected at an audience of annoying teeny chicks who > screamed DURING songs and outright misogynists who berated her through the > night. I say: Let me clear a few things up. First of all, I am a girl, not a guy. Second, I did not say that I only go to large concerts and that is the reason I know about Jewel. I said that I was exposed to Jewel through her rise in popularity via her POY album and her exposure on MTV and VH1. I'm sorry, but as nice as she is, when she was doing her concerts in small places there was no way she was going to haul all the way here to North Carolina to play in a coffee house for me. Hence, without her current popularity, I would not know the beauty that is Jewel. Also, I did not say that she moved into her van to become famous. I said that she moved into her van and quite her job to do something meaningful, to spread her message. Finally, I do not believe for ONE SECOND that one person can comprehend or judge the experiences of another person. I understand, Sean, that you have had a bad/some bad experiences with Jewel's rise in popularity. I'm sure that the screaming girls ruined the concert for everyone. I will even go so far as to say that that type of attitude (the girls screaming during the song) devalues and degrades the quality and message of Jewel's song. More than likely, those girls had little experience with concert-going and didn't realize that they were ruining the show. Either that, or they were just plain jerks. In either case, there are those of us who are Jewel fans as a result of her recent rise, but we love her just the same. I would love to travel back in time and hear her at a small venue, or listen to some of her earlier songs. Alas, I can't do that. But I love her now, not because of her popularity, but because of her messages, her simplicity, her talent, her genuine goodness......I'm sorry, I'm rambling. And there are so many more like me. Don't devalue our devotion and appreciation of Jewel just because there are some who don't "get" what Jewel is all about. As a matter of fact, in the spirit of Jewel, I think that a certain openmindedness is in order. Maybe some of the people who were drawn to her because she is the "cool thing" right now may actually get the message. Then, it will have all been worth it. It's also within the spirit of Jewel not to form a "before Jewel was famous" click--I really don't think she would want anyone excluded from something that has to do with her. (Of course, that is just an expression of my view, and I don't ask you to take it as your own). Also, referring to someone's ideas as "Pro-Popularity Idiocy" is a little sparky--be sure it doesn't turn into a flame, Angel's wings singe very easily. Honestly, I see where you are coming from as far as the screaming girls (and similar situations) are concerned...I would have a negative attitude about the thing also...as a matter of fact I have a similar story about some drunk people standing on a chair in front of me at farm aid. At any rate, most of the people who take the time to read 75 to 100 jewel emails per day and take the time to post here are probably loyal Jewel fans, tried and true, and they come here to enjoy the company and enthusiasm of other loyal Jewel fans. Be careful what you say and who you direct it to, you may hurt someone's feelings . ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Jul 1997 00:08:10 -0500 From: "Jamie L. Culp" Subject: SJC: The Food of other Angels Okay, my extended family (Family Kilcher, I guess): Two things: First of all, I got my EDA shirt three days ago, and I LOVE IT! I've worn it twice (guess it's time to throw it in the wash: Cold Cycle, to keep it from bleeding Angel Blue onto my other clothes). I implore anyone who hasn't bought one yet to get it. It distinguishes us as EDAs: A badge which should make us all swell with pride. Second, I was drawn to Jewel (as I'm sure a lot of us do) because I felt a kindredness to Ms. Kilcher that I've felt toward no musician before.=20 There was a strange yet wholesome intimacy. But, as a result of her great and well-deserved success, I can't help but feel that the bond has weakened. She used to walk the same earth as the rest of us. Now that everyone around her has told her she glides above the ground, I fear she has begun to believe them. I don't fault her, as I enjoy having my ego stoked like anyone. But, even so, I feel my Angel has been taken from me. So, to get to the point, I've seen many people write here of other artists (Tara Maclean, etc) who are as much Seraphim as Ms. Kilcher.=20 So, I ask of you all, who would you recommend to me most of all to check out, and where can I get their albums? Also, if anyone knows any artists based in or coming to Nashville that falls into the Cherub Connection, PLEEEASE let me know.
