I also buy second hand CDs with a clear conscience (and, indeed, have often thought of writing to Garth Brooks every time I do so just to irritate him, but as I wouldn't buy one of his even second hand and he'd (quite rightly) write me off as some loony Limey I don't bother). Look at it this way: someone who likes what you've taped is more likely to buy the next (or earlier) CDs by that artist where they wouldn't have before, someone who doesn't like it won't (and they wouldn't have anyway). Home taping is actually informal (and free) advertising for the music biz - which is why they don't object to it as much as they used to (and is probably the only moral argument against it). Had this continued, she would never have become an icon, she would have had more of a "Shawn Colvin" sort of fame. But now the media (which plays a HUGE part in iconification), has picked up on Jewel's novelty: innocence, maturity, spirituality, and sensuality. So the videos and songs are getting over played and when you add in all the press coverage, Jewel is getting over-exposed. It's hard to convince a cynic to let down their guard when they're sick of seeing your face everywhere. So how many true Jewel fans can be acquired after over-exposure and iconification? I don't doubt that Jewel can handle her fame. What I doubt is that her music can reach new fans as deeply as those who watched her ascension into icon status. Thankfully, there's very little idol-worship to Jewel on this list. Hello my fellow EDA's! It's been over a month since I last posted, and so many things have happened. Some good, some not so good, and some just plain bad; but, I guess in the long run if it all balances out, I should have many wonderful things to look forward to in the near future. First the bad... On Thursday morning of last week I received a phone call from my parents. This may be a normal happening in some of your lives, but not mine so I knew something was wrong. It turns out that my 25 year old brother was diagnosed with colon cancer and had to have emergency surgery Thursday afternoon. This completely knocked me off of my feet. My little brother who was born autistic and partially retarded had been dealt another blow by the hand of fate. I honestly didn't know whether to curse God, ask God for help, or just cry. In the end I chose a little of all three, but I think I was far more superior in cursing mode. Anyway, Jacquie (my wife for those who haven't met us) and the kids left immediately for Maryville Tenn. (my family's home) and got no further than the Ohio state line when my mother called me on the cellular to tell me that my Grandmother was dying and probably wouldn't make it through the weekend. This wasn't a great shock as she's suffered from lung cancer for quite some time, but the timing geez!! We decided that my brother's situation would take precidence and proceeded to Tenn. When I arrived I was shocked(yes again) to find my brother had lost over 65 lbs in two weeks and appeared to me more of an apparition than person. From that minute on I couldn't leave him for the next 3 days. Having the mind of a 10-12 year old he kept asking questions like 'Am I going to die John?' over and over, each time I was forced to turn away while saying No, of course not. On Friday morning, just as we all thought the news would be the worst, my brother awoke in good spirits and the surgeon arrived to tell us that the 6 hour surgery from the day before was a success. They had removed a tumor, in the doctor's words, 'Cancer ridden and angry at something; also as big as a man's fist. The good news was that it had attached itself to the outside of the colon and about a 1/4 inch from the stomach lining. Therefore no colonoscopy was performed and they felt good that all lymph nodes remained clean of disease. By Sunday morning I could not believe the difference. My brother who two days ago seemed on his death bed, was up and walking the halls of Tenn Univ hospital! A true miracle right before my eyes!!! He was doing so well that we felt safe enough to return home Monday morning and he's called twice since; feeling better everyday. I know the severity of what he just went through, but I also know that if in 48 hours it can all change so dramatically, than anything can happen. God knows he deserves something great to happen to him. As for my grandmother, as of today she is still hanging on, but is content with moving on. God speed grandma... The not so good... In a much lighter topic and tone... I was unable to gain access to the internet via my provider for almost 2.5 weeks before finally gaining it long enough to write Igor who promptly made my day by calling me back. Thanks Igor!! I had thought that I had messed the entire raffle prize giveaways up with my absence, but learned to the contrary I had not. Phew!!! Angry EDA's to the left of me, angry EDA's to the right of me... Not a pretty picture! (Especially Igor in those awful Hawaiian shorts - ugh!). After catching up on everything through Igor, I lost connection again the following afternoon before finally regaining my access just before the news of my brother came on Thursday. That left me with 2000+ messages today to read before finally settling in to write this letter. Believe me I may be boring the pants off of you, but it's been great therapy for me! The good (GREAT!)... Today with my brother seemingly out of the woods, my grandma moving on to her next journey, I am ready for a change of luck which I will force to take place. Nothing makes me happier than to see some truly happy people so here's what's ahead. 1st off... I am finally going to fulfill the prize promised in the raffle for James - - I received a message stating that the winner could not come to Cincy, so I will send $125 to that individual ($45 for 2 tix and 35 spending cash --- inflation and tax coverage) ;) I just need the winner to send me his/her address for mailing. 2nd... Thanks to Larry, Igor, Bart, and others I know not, I will be hosting a Living Room Concert for Cindy Lee and Elizabeth on August 4th!!! All you midwest EDA's listen up! For $10 you can eat all you can eat, drink all you can drink, mingle with your fellow EDA's, and if that wasn't enough listen to some damn good music as well! Cindy Lee, Elizabeth; bring it on!!!! 3rd and not least Bogz!!!... I will send Dan Bogacz the tapes I've promised him forever, as well as the ticket fee I owe him for Lilith Fair. Send me your addy again Dan!!! If your still talking to me that is!!! ;) And lastly, but most importantly I want to wish everyone a great and wonderful Starry Night!!! The Fish family will be there in spirit so please party loudly!!!! Love you all; and please keep my brother William in your thoughts, Fish and Family ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jul 97 10:48:20 PDT From: "Beth" Subject: SJC :P I'm a newbie...please read when you get a chance...thank you Hi everyone! I'm a new member of this mailing list, but I have been a huge fan of Jewel since I hear "Adrian" in the fall of 1995. Jewel takes the emotions, thoughts, and ideas that are so difficult to verbalize, and expresses them in a way that makes you go "yes! That's exactly what I was feeling!" She truly is a beautiful artist, and her songs have helped me through some rough spots in my life. I am a college student. Right now, I spend all of my time working, surfing the net and trying to teach myself how to play the guitar....talk about a huge undertaking, maybe I'll he decent in about ten years. Anyway, Jewel's songs seem to channel straight into my soul. When she sings, I can almost hear a soft soothing voice saying "All is well, you are not the only person who feels like this....you are never alone." There...I gushed. I saw Jewel at Farm Aid in Columbia, SC this past fall. She was great (of course). She is going to be here in NC soon, but I can't go see her because I am a poor college student and it's either a Jewel concert or the required text for my classical mythology class. :'o (I made a new emoticon....the one up there is sobbing!!!) Jewel was in the New England area last year and I had the opportunity to go see her for $15 at a bar/club in Boston. The setting was supposed to be an intimate concert, being that the place didn't fit more than 300 folks. I passed this up because, being a poor college student, I couldn't scrounge up 15bux! And now I am paying $32 to go see her play at a much larger venue. Moral of the story, forget about the classical mythology text. Go see Jewel :) Borrow the book from a friend or share if you possibly can. I think it's worth the sacrifice. You only live once, are only young once. College folks are _supposed_ to make rash decisions - and enjoy every minute of it. Just attempt to get anything done outside of the norm (or heaven forbid start a new company) in the Netherlands or Sweden and you will yearn for the bureaucracy of America. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 1997 08:50:48 -0700 From: smithr@agcs.com (Roger Smith) Subject: Tree Planting Here's the list so far of people interested in tree planting.. if you would like to add your name to the list, please email it to me *privately* Thanks. I just thought that it was oh-so-special b/c it mentions us (woo-hoo) and how much she appreciates Angelfood, etc., and has come other cool stuff.........so, there you go.... Alana. Lanna1@aol.com November 21, 1996 Alaskan yodeler Jewel is still out there saving her soul traversing the globe on eternal tour. The 21 year old cult singer stole the hearts of latent sincerists lurking in front of MTV with her 1995 debut "Pieces of You." And now 200 songs later and a contagious fan base, Jewel has turned out another album that will be released this March. SPINonline chatted with Jewel from a tour stop in Germany recently, where as she'll explain, the shows have hardly been the giggling love fests that she's accoustomed to in the States. Over the AT&T lines Jewel came in crisp, a little tired perhaps, but with tons of news about the new LP she recorded last summer at Bearsville Studio in Woodstock, New York. SPIN: I heard you recorded some songs for your upcoming album with Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. How did that all come about? J: I knew Flea from back when I was living in my car in San Diego before I even thought about getting a record deal. he was one of the first people I ever played for. He encouraged me to make a record when I was in complete disbelief and thought I was terrible. We kept in touch over the years. He's always been a big supporter and wanted to play on the album. So I said okay. S: What songs did you record together? J: We did a song called Satellite which Flea does an awesome base line on. Its my favorite song on the record. We ran over four or five songs. "Face Of Love" "Innocence Maintained" ... I don't remember the names of the rest. S: Were they songs that you wrote? J: I wrote everything. Not all the songs I did with Flea will make it the final album though because the timing wasn't perfect or the piano was off. Things like that. S: What is Satellite about? J: To me its about that alot of us are taught to program our VCR's but not to understand our emotions. We know how to send satellites into space but we don't know how to relate to each other. I wrote it when I was doing preproduction for the album. I thought it was a terrible song and I almost threw it away. My producer heard it and said, "This is great." S; Did you write most of the album before you went into the studio? J: Its a real mixture. I have over 200 songs. S: It must have been really hard to choose which ones would go on the album. J: It was. I recorded over thirty tracks. S: Is there a theme to this album? J: Not really. I look at my first album as a pencil sketch and this one is more of a skilled drawing. There's more color. I've grown better at articulating musically and lyrically. S: Was your frame of mind different this time around? J: I was so scared the first time around. I didn't think anyone would ever really listen to the album. I was also scared of the musicians that worked with me on it. They were all so talented. They played on Elvis' albums and with Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan. Legendary!! S: I heard there were some live tracks on the album. J: Yep. It was really sweet, my fans asked me over the internet- I have a group of fans that named themselves after one of my songs "Everyday Angels I'm Sensitive" -- they asked me to put on a free concert if they all came to Woodstock. I said yes, and so people drove from San Francisco, Missouri, Florida, Canada, all over. They camped out and called it Jewelstock. I recorded those sessions and put some of the songs on the album. S: How many of these fans are there? J: I don't know really. Because radio never played me in the beginning and I toured so much, I got a really strong following going. They've really kept my spirits up. They bootleg my stuff. Their goal is to get all my material. S: And that's okay with you? J: Its good because I write alot of new stuff and I forget'em. If it wasn't for my fans sending me back the bootlegs the stuff would be gone forever. They don't sell'em. S: Do you yodel on the record? J: No. It was taking all the attention away from my songs. S: The record's coming out in March. Will you tour in support of it? J: I won't stop touring. This tour and that tour will blend together. S: You've been on the road for two years now and your just going to stay on the road. Is that hard? J: yep. I love what I'm doing and I feel thankful that I don't have to be a waitress. But at the same time getting 3 hours of sleep a night and doing 40 cities every 30 days playing 5 shows a day has been very tiring. I lose heart sometimes especially cause no bands would tour with me and so I was opening for gothic bands and punk bands. Right now I'm in Germany with this guy named Willie Deville from New Orleans. He has no following except in Germany. His crowds are so mean to me. I've never played such tough crowds. It's a humbling business. It feels good cause fame is only in other peoples minds. Its not a reality. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 1997 11:15:07 -0600 From: Bob B Subject: RE: Beauty > Hi all, > After reading all the posts on beauty, it got me thinking=20 > and beauty is extremely objective. I think the reason that alot of guys say "JEWEL IS SO BEAUTIFUL!" = (I admit I do it too) is because she doesnt only have superficial beauty, = but she has inner beauty and believe it or not, quite a few guys like I = respect that. It's kind of cool to find a famous girl who is good looking who is innocent/girlish like and hasn't been in 800 different porno magazines. Just MHO. I think thats about all i gotta say... BTW: I just got my EDA t-shirt and "Yahoo!" its pretty pishnazzy! :) Adanidoj, Tiger Angel" Hey man the inner beauty is true but who can deny a bit of superficial = beauty. I was watching Jewel Unplugged and my dad walked in and all he = could say was "Wow!" Bob Lay down the boogie and play that funky music till we die.
