Why should we talk about the bad points in others, esp. Jewel? >> Steven...thank you for the response... Since when is discussion, of any sort, "meaningless"? Openly discussing anything, and everything, on this list, and in life in general, can ONLY serve to be fruitful for the manifestation of thought and the promotion of intellectual conversation in one form or another. I feel it is not only a little irrational, but also a little naive to think that our conversations on this list should be limited purely to praise. Nobody is perfect, not even blessed Jewel. And to deny the discussion of flaws, downfalls, or dislikes, would be hindering the process of communication as we know it. I welcome dissatisfaction...it leads to great intellectual and creative insight that many of us may have overlooked. So, I say, everyone, there shouldn't be added censorship on here...isn't there enough of it in the world around us already? Well Britain did take Hong Kong kind of shamefully. As you may know, there was something called the Opium Wars. British merchants were selling opium to many chinese people, and China wanted this to stop. Britain in turn took over Hong Kong rather easily with their muskets, ironic since the Chinese invented gunpowder. So Hong Kong is really a part of China. Now all we can do is wait and see what happens, if China does keep the promises of the treaty which Britain and China signed. There are not many posts on the list about that side of Jewel, but I'm glad you brought this up. However, there are hundreds of actresses, singers, and other icons that young girls see on television and feel this way...heck, it's the main reason for eating disorders. However, we can agree that Jewel is certainly not the most popular image beauty-wise being portrayed in the media. She is not drop-dead gorgeous, as many have pointed out. Instead, she has a certain rugged beauty, and from my experience in seeing her live, she is absolutely radiant. The pictures and videos absolutely do not do her justice, but when I think about it, I'm not in love with Jewel or her physical beauty. The reason for this is that I truly respect Jewel...she has come a long way and has really helped pave the way for the female folk-rock singers in the mid-90's. And why does she work on her image so much? Is it only to attract >both genders, through her words with the women and her looks with the guys? Now to the second paragraph. I started listening to Jewel in early '95 when I was at Blockbuster music and a sales clerk stocking PoY asked me to listen and see if I liked it...I was of course amazed and bought it immediately. I had heard WWSYS earlier that year, and really loved the song...I could never get it outta my head, so I had bought the single (with NYA). I loved that song too, and when I got the album I realized that this wasthe greatest thing I had ever heard. Remember, the WWSYS single cover does not have a beautiful picture of Jewel...actually I would call it very non-glamorous. I saw the video a few weeks later and noticed the same thing you did. But I watched it because I loved the song, not because I thought Jewel was pretty. Of course, I too remember thinking, "Her eyes are so beautiful" and "She is really pretty...wow" but this was long after I had listened to her music...I had never seen a picture of her until I saw the video (and the album of course). I totally agree that Jewel knows she's sexy, but I don't know to what extent she exploits this. I'm sure sometimes she wonders whether 4 million+ copies of her album have been sold because of her body or because of her music. A very poignant question, one that MANY artists face at some point in their career. That's why I think Jewel really appreciates the EDAs... we truly love her for her music. Instead of yelling "take it off!!!" at every show, we yell requests for songs we love to hear that no one else knows. For example...I remember at Rockfest, she said something about how they didn't have much time to rehearse, and she said "Oh well, sometimes it be that way." and Chandra and I started screaming like maniacs because this was our favorite song. Everyone around us looked at us like we were insane, but we knew what Jewel was talking about. Everyone was silent at that point, and we kept screaming until Jewel heard *I think*. We were only about 15-20 feet away from the center of the stage, and I like to think that she somehow knew that we were EDAs. "Well, that had nothing to do with this, and it was actually a pointless story." Now if you've listened to Jewelstock enough times, or if you were there, you remember exactly where that was from (I know I know, she said "this song") Yes, right before Angel Needs A Ride after the talked about the outhouse. :-) > >I, for one, first starting listening to Jewel after i saw the WWSYS >video(toyou guys out there - you know damn well what im talking about- those >sexy lips - any women-liking male on this planet would have watched that >entire video, then after awaking from a 5-minute state of shock said to >themselves, "I'm gonna go buy that CD - it probably has pictures") and i was >sucked into her web, a web which she wove for every heterosexual man out there. >She probably thought, "I'm sexy, I might as well exploit it!" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 1997 00:56:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Sloppyjoe2@aol.com Subject: JEWEL'S NET OF SOCIAL CONTROL READ ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM In a message dated 97-07-01 00:25:19 EDT, apearse@acad.udallas.edu (*Sometime to Return*) writes: << But I don't, and it's not because I'm a jobless slacker...I'm a student, and just don't have that kind of money right now to throw around when all I want to do is experience some good music casually >> you dont have time to get a job, but you have time to type a five page post about the morality of taping a friend's CD? this i dont understand but, this Dancer chick is actually right about the whole copying thing; and besides, would the executives like it more if everyone that wanted their artists' CD went to their local Best Buy(or other chain of the like) and stole the CD? now, that would be an actual theft a friend recording the CD for you is far different from this besides, Jewel should have money taken from her for seducing all guys to buy her CDs as i once posted: I, for one, first starting listening to Jewel after i saw the WWSYS video(to you guys out there - you know damn well what im talking about- those sexy lips - any women-liking male on this planet would have watched that entire video, then after awaking from a 5-minute state of shock said to themselves, "I'm gonna go buy that CD - it probably has pictures") and i was sucked into her web, a web which she wove for every heterosexual man out there. She probably thought, "I'm sexy, I might as well exploit it!" But, now I've grown less superficial(as opposed to most guys out there) and gave her music a chance. Nowadays, i appreciate her for her music and her songwriting ability. She has been controlling the male gender. This must be stopped; this also gives Dancer the right to ask a friend to tape Jewel music for her(Dancer is a chick, right?)
