There is a song by Jewel called Quiet Warrior I think. It is really pretty. I was also wondering if anyone could tell me where I could get any of Jewels music besides POY. I'm wondering what you all think. Lendra wrote: >Jewel had many scenes singing in front >of a scrim--a sort of hanging net. Alot of folk, including me, wondered about the body double. Here's my theory. Bibi told me early last week that Jewel would be the only person in the video. That supports a theory that maybe Amy was just a typical body double standing in for Jewel for stunts or whatever. However, I think it may go much deeper than that. Perhaps Amy was playing another Jewel and was in some of the *same scenes* as Jewel, so we would have *two* Jewel's at once. What I envsion is two Jewel's, one in the white dress mentioned above, one in the black, both in the same scene. Jewel plays the "Jewel" whose face we see, while Amy is in the same scene, face barely seen or unseen, while the real Jewel sings and Amy plays out what Jewel is singing about. Perhaps it may even go much deeper than that, like when Jewel sings "these foolish games are tearing me apart....", maybe we see a another Jewel (Amy) be torn from Jewel, perhaps maybe even an alter-ego, which would maybe explain the white dress/black dress changing...follow?? Make sense? Am I nuts? (shut up Dennis) Mike :) === New to the list and confused? Need to find a members' Email addy? And why does she work on her image so much? Is it only to attract both genders, through her words with the women and her looks with the guys? I, for one, first starting listening to Jewel after i saw the WWSYS video(to you guys out there - you know damn well what im talking about- those sexy lips - any women-liking male on this planet would have watched that entire video, then after awaking from a 5-minute state of shock said to themselves, "I'm gonna go buy that CD - it probably has pictures") and i was sucked into her web, a web which she wove for every heterosexual man out there. She probably thought, "I'm sexy, I might as well exploit it!" But, now I've grown less superficial(as opposed to most guys out there) and gave her music a chance. Nowadays, i appreciate her for her music and her songwriting ability. Understand, Nathan, only the non-superficial people can absorb Jewel's aura and message. The people are typically women, but i can also absorb it and respect Jewel for this and for choosing such a non-violent inspiration to write her songs. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 21:31:08 -0400 From: jonny22@webtv.net (Jon Miller) Subject: Re: Foolish games on the charts Actually the fact that radio stations are playing it at all is pretty good considering it hasn't been released as a single yet. It's pretty rare for stations to just play a song off an album for the hell of it. I'm just really crossing my fingers hoping this song does really well because I thinkit will be the biggest boost to ewel's career ths far if it does. It doesn't even have to go to #1, just enough so lots of people hear it. I say this because her previous 2 singles were more catchy withhooks you can't get out of your head, and they don't really showcase her voice. FG is just pure voice, the hook isn't catchy and if people like it, it's because of her voice rather than it being catchy. I think this will do wonders for her career because people will see her as more of a vocalist. Believe me, it's worth the time. OK, if you insist on being daunted, at least pick up the novel and read the book entitled Pro and Contra, a discussion between Ivan and Alyosha and especially the chapter the Grand Inquisitor ( the subject of my senior thesis). This is the best part of the book, and, in fact, the crux of the novel. The first 450 pages moves slowly but really sets the stage and is actually the best part (since it includes Pro and Contra), but just when you're beginning to weary of philosophy and sado-masochism, Dostoyevsky sweeps the plot along with redemption and mystery resolution. Not to draw unfair comparisons, but you'll probably hear Sarah McLachlin's harmonies mixed with Ani DiFranco's attitude and (gasp) Alanis's energy. Holly doesn't exactly have Jewel's optimism in her songs, but her melodies and lyrics are fabulous, and the CD is electric and powerful. Okay, everybody, people stunk! They slept in common rooms on straw which, if it was changed twice a year, they felt blessed (i.e. they slept with fleas, rats, and the ever popular feces). They had absolutely no concept of optimum health. Women were treated as property and TOLD whom to marry. Chivalry, as now, existed only in stories. Men were depleted from endless crusades. Moslems and Jews were slaughtered willy nilly. The Church ruled people's lives. Censorship was the rule and the norm. Castles were not glamourous but cold and drafty and built for the ever needed defense. Ah, and these were the afflictions of the richest 1% of the population. As for the Renaissance, ideas began to flourish. What a grand time to be alive. That is, of course, if you managed to be royally or popishly rich to afford Michaelangelo to design your tomb or Da Vinci to paint your wall. Or if you managed to stay out of the religious wars and heretic burnings caused by the Reformation. Or if you were one of the very few people who could read these new ideas (i.e. rich male). Oh, and you'd still stink. And the first time I saw Jewel was when WWSYS first came out on video back in `94. I was channel surfing and saw her and said "Wow, she's gorgeous" This doesn't prove my point does it? I'll get back to that. Back to beauty, I find, for example Sandra Bullock so-so, but one of my friends almost starts hyperventilating every time he sees her. There are tons more examples I could say but I won't. Of course now I'm talking about physical beauty, which could be changed very easily, Courtney Love comes into mind, so much difference from what she looked like before People vs. Larry Flynt. Although physical beauty can be easily modified, and this is what initially attracts you to somebody whether it be a singer or boyfriend\girlfriend, the inner beauty is what keeps you interested in that person. If you don't like that person's attitude or per- sonality chances are you won't listen or talk to that person. But about icons, I think if Jewel didn't want to become an icon she should have kept on waitressing. I know she never thought she would have become this big, but I'm sure she can handle it. She has until now. She should have seen it coming once PoY started selling or if not then, at Jewelstock. Icons are only people being put on pedestals by their fans (the media helps a bit too). Back to my third line, who has actually listened to Jewel since her first single came out. As I said, I stopped channel surfing upon seeing her beauty. But I listened to her music because I found it terrific. But even though some singers attract some fans by beauty, some actually see if they could sell without any biases by beauty. The example I mean here is Wild Orchid, three lovely(gorgeous) ladies who did not have a picture of themselves on their first single to see if infact people would like them for their music instead of their looks. And their single did awfully well(Talk to Me). Thought I'd mention it I've rambled enough for now. Thanks Pat PS. I would really like any angelfood anybody might have. Please e-mail me privatly. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 20:39:51 -0700 From: millerk@cport.com (Karen Miller) Subject: RE: ANY HONG KONG EDA`S? i dont like the idea that they had to give it back to england like it was a peace of paper holly - ---------- From: SIGNALSYYZ@aol.com[SMTP:SIGNALSYYZ@aol.com] Sent: Monday, June 30, 1997 7:32 PM To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: ANY HONG KONG EDA`S? ...i was just wondering are there any eda`s living in hong kong ...if so what do you feel the change will bring for hong kong? ....and do you fear the takeover?.....peace,ed ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 1997 00:05:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Cappacinos@aol.com Subject: Re: Web Concert please send me the adress to ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 1997 00:10:59 -0400 (EDT) From: FabCAGal@aol.com Subject: Re: MR BB!!! I'm personally not crazy about Elizabeth Hummel myself but Cindy Lee Berryhill? Do you really think she's not talented? Even though I work with Jewel & love her work, I'm personally more fascinated with CLB & have been for almost 10 years. You might want to give her another chance. Hope to meet up with you sometime. From what I've heard from Igor & Larry, youre a gas to be around! Oh & congratulations on the engagementS! :-) Alan(MrBB) >>I got this forward today...and don't have your direct addy...so I will reply to the list...sorry everyone! I have listened to the CD twice, which was gut wrenching both times, and still have the same conclusion. I find CLB very monotone, and without much to say. She strikes me as a typical strung out hippie wannabe who's drug use is affecting her existence in her music and her personality. Sorry to offend...just my opinion. I hope to meet you too! I have heard great things! Oh, and thanks for congrats on the engagement! The directions I wrote for myself got us there. Eventually at least. We arrived to find Mia pulling up as well. After being lambasted for parking so far away we trek down the block to Wilbert's. We find ourselves in a bar/restaurant, sparsely occupied at the time (about 8:20.) We order some food and look at pictures: Mia's from Rockfest, Liz's from Europe. While waiting, Tara walks in. I walk up to her, and introduce myself, etc. I tell her we have a long list of people to say hi, and she says, "Let me guess. One of them is Chris Snyder." Well let me tell you she has been busy. Radio & instore appearances, etc. She is beat. Mia and Liz walk up and introduce themselves. Tara tells me I have to give Dan a big wet sloppy smooch. I tried to do it on IRC but Mia has since informed me I have to do it in person :P Tara at the time was having difficulty: the manager of the bar wouldn't accept her guest list. I ask her if I can tape, and she says please do: and laughs at the sign by the door prohibiting recording devices. Ha ha ha. Mia delivers the long list of people who say hi, Tara says hello to all of you and thanks for the support. After awhile and a thousand miles, our food comes and we eat while Tara gets ready to take the stage. Mia gets the wonderful idea to mount my mic in the sugar dish to aim it directly at the PA speakers. Tara opens with Let Her Feel The Rain, and continues to play songs like Evidence, That's Me, and Jordan, among others. She truly is a wonderful performer and it's a wonderful feeling to be looked in the eye by a performer on the stage and see their appreciation that you're there and know their music enough to sing along. Sometimes, I imagine that this feeling is what it was like to see Jewel, way back when. Anyway. Tara ends her 40-minute set with an amazing a capella rendition of the title song of her album, Silence. She sits on the stage afterward and signs our CDs.. and we talk for a little longer with her, but she really has to go because she's so tired and Bill (her guitarist/beau) just got back from Germany or somewhere. We get a quick picture & she's gone. Ron Sexsmith takes the stage, and he was ok. After his set, we hook up with Tara's manager Dave, whom had been tipped off to our presence by Farr. He was VERY cool. We ended up talking to him for an hour, about EDAs and mailing lists and web pages. An interesting issue is brought up by this. Dave showed a great deal of respect and admiration for EDAs. He realizes that as a group we had a lot to do with getting Jewel's album on the radio, and he appreciates all that we do for other artists. Basically, we've gained a lot of power due to our track record! Another interesting tidbit. Right after telling Dave about Cindy Lee Berryhill and the Living Room Tour, a Cindy Lee song was played over the P.A.s! Kinda weird. All in all, it was a great night. I only hope that we all realize that not only are we a part of a great thing here, (and this should be reiterated over the course of our media exposure) but we are well respected by the music community. Trust me, Dave made this VERY apparent. Some things to keep in mind... - -tim 'burkeman' - ---------------------------------------- "Being on the list gets you on the list" ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #513 ***************************
