There is no problem with government in > ideal communism though, because there isn't supposed to be a > government at all. > Yup, communism is anarchist. True communism would be a Utopian society. A collective. Like a commune. Everyone pools there resources and spilts them evenly. Every form of communism ever seen in practice in this world has been corrupt, usually a dictatorship, where one tyrant controls all. There is a ruling class, and the rest of the population is poor. Regardless, Marx himself said communism wouldn't work in an agrarian society such as Russia, it would have to be a technologically advanced indusrial society. I'm not saying communism is right, that's a whole other issue. However, most people have a skewed view of communism, their perception colored by things such as views of Russia, one of the most corrupt communist companies, the cold war, and the portrayal of communism as evil by senator Joseph Mcarthy(sp?). Hey, I got pretty off subject pretty fast, huh? Geez, where did I pick up all this stuff, I'm only 14. Travis "Luck is my middle name," said Rincewind, indistinctly. "Mind you, my first name is Bad." And why does she work on her image so much? Is it only to attract both genders, through her words with the women and her looks with the guys? I, for one, first starting listening to Jewel after i saw the WWSYS video(to you guys out there - you know damn well what im talking about- those sexy lips - any women-liking male on this planet would have watched that entire video, then after awaking from a 5-minute state of shock said to themselves, "I'm gonna go buy that CD - it probably has pictures") and i was sucked into her web, a web which she wove for every heterosexual man out there. She probably thought, "I'm sexy, I might as well exploit it!" But, now I've grown less superficial(as opposed to most guys out there) and gave her music a chance. Nowadays, i appreciate her for her music and her songwriting ability. Understand, Nathan, only the non-superficial people can absorb Jewel's aura and message. The people are typically women, but i can also absorb it and respect Jewel for this and for choosing such a non-violent inspiration to write her songs. in response to a message dated 97-06-29 20:36:03 EDT, in which jnj@mail.better.net (Nathan) writes: "Jewel has a very powerful message that is begining to alter the course of life for young girls...girls who "worship" jewel's music and is being conditioned by her message in her music....but when people only regard her as body of flesh...i think it degrades her spirit... And I'm told that as soon as the EDAF is legally set up we'll all be learning about it and our contributions will be welcome and help to make things work. Also, all the talk on this list about the EDAF will move to another list. I've tried to stimulate discussion so we understand what the EDAF will and will not mean to us. And everyone else that's talking about it has helped me to understand how I feel about things. Only one person on this list has flamed me for trying to encourage discussion of the EDAF and this is what they wrote: "I have no problem with the EDAF, I have a problem with you. You prentend you know whats going on, you not involved in the EDAF, allyour doing is confussing the issue, and clogong the list up with useless posts." I hope that only this person feels that way. I DON'T know what's going on - -- that's why I am asking. And I don't think it's "useless" to post about things if it helps people gain awareness or understanding of an issue. Talking openly about things should make them less confusing. I can see objecting to posts about Lee Ann Rimes trashing, or gay bashing (that's all history now) but the EDAF is a cherished dream of Jewels and many EDAs. Most of us don't know how it's going to work but we're getting closer to understanding. If anyone else has a problem with me, that's OK. If good comes of this that sort of problem really won't matter. But it seems like I haven't posted anything for quite a while, so here goes... Texas was hot. Hot and sticky. They're not supposed to get humidity in Dallas I thought, but I guess they saved it for my trip so I'd feel right at home. Of course I kicked off my week-and-a-half southern vacation with Rock Fest, and i'm sure I'm the last to post my review so hopefully it won't be too much of a repeat. So, Rock Fest was this huge festival that was supposed to be equal in proportion to Woodstock etc. Well the crowds were there, but unlike Woodstock, this was a carefully-calculated corporate event designed to promote Blockbuster, MTV and VH1. The bands were all safe as warm milk, with nothing groundbreaking that will go down in history as an essential moment in music history. All that aside, it was fun with the exception of trying to get through the horrendously-designed bottlenecks that let to the main grounds and stage areas. Luckily we arrived early on Friday avoiding the all-day lineups that clogged the Dallas highways to the speedway on Saturday, and even more luckily I managed to score some media passes that allowed some of us to get around a few of the lineups in the speedway. Eventually those passes *somehow* landed Farr backstage, where he clicked some photos that should land soon on a website near you :) I found it hard to consider anything on the main stage a highlight, because it was nearly impossible to get close enough to see anything in detail. We watched most of the early acts...Wallflowers, Paula Cole, etc. with the other EDAs from around the VH1 second stage area, where the only sightline was to a jumbotron TV monitor. We moved into the main stage area for Jewel's performance, and managed to see her way up there somewhere. Now, 2 years ago when I first saw Jewel play in front of about 100 people at Toronto's tiny C'est What club, she stopped during the song POY to say, "One day I imagine a whole stadium full of people singing in unison...'Faggot...faggot...'." It seemed so incredibly humorous back then, but her wish came true last weekend as she led the crowd to do just that, and I'm sure she was remembering those early shows as she did it. The next highlight was her public debut performance on electric guitar for the song Down. I wasn't crazy about her rocked-up version of YWMFM, but the crowd wanted energy and I think she realized that, so it worked well in that environment. And I was really surprised to hear her end with the cover of Patti Smith's old tune "Dancing Barefoot". I've always liked this song, and it was really cool to hear Jewel sing it. Overall though, I thought Jewel's performance on MTV Unplugged later in the week far outdid what we saw at RockFest. There's just something about her music that gets lost being belted out to a stadium filled with 300,000+. I guess it's hard to be delicate in that kind environment. A highlight of the day's performances for me was actually Sister 7's short set on the VH1 second stage. That's partly because we were actually able to walk right up and stand in front for this one! Sister 7 is a band from Austin, TX that cranks out some incredible, high-energy rock/funk/jazz/blues grooves. Content-wise they have little in common with Jewel. But they are top-notch musicians, the female lead singer, Patrice Pike, has a fabulously powerful voice, and the tunes are melodic, hooky and strong. They were signed to the Arista label last year, and their new CD "This The Trip" is in stores July 15. I'll be first in line for a copy! It might not be for everyone here, but do yourself a favor and see if you can find it at a record store listening station in a couple weeks. I'll remind ya. :) Of course I wouldn't have even bothered going to this whole thing were it not for the EDA gathering that surrounded it. Farr and the RV totally ruled, and the EDAs & whole environment would have made it worth the trip to Texas, even if I hadn't been heading onto New Orleans the next day. :) I dragged my friend from Dallas along for this event, and while he's more a fan of Judas Priest than Jewel, he had lots of good things to say about the EDAs, and the event because of them. Notes from the rest of the week: New Orleans has great food. But it was far outclassed for environment and music by Austin, TX. If you want to spend some time immersed in a great music scene and party atmosphere, you've gotta go to Austin! I hope to see some of you in August at Toronto Lilith! ttyl, Dan - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAN STARK danstark@mnsi.net Windsor, Ontario, Canada - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 00:51:25 -0400 (EDT) From: JonBoy911@aol.com Subject: Re: songs that make me cry.... Insurance company hasn't replaced it yet. :( JonBoy911 the stereo-less/trouble sleepin' not at home/ can't wait till his house is finished.
