I think we should have casual government not a strict > comunitst government!! > Just a second! My pulse always quickens when I hear communism being misinterpreted and here it certainly was. As things stand right now with the EDAs, we have a communist system. NOT communism as we've seen attempted in various parts of the world, but communism as it is ideally fleshed out: a society in which each person contributes for the benefit of something great. (What you see in Cuba, the middle east, China and other places is a dictatorship calling itself communism.) I think what was intended was "we should have a casual government not a strict TOTALITARIAN or DICTATORIAL government." The problem I see with communism is the imminent danger of the individual losing value. There is no problem with government in ideal communism though, because there isn't supposed to be a government at all. I have far too much time on my hands. But, after reading some very intelligent posts in regards to EDAF being mentioned in TIME and potential repercussions of that, I could not add much topic to that discussion that hasn't already been, so articulately, brought up. I do feel this deserves a 'sense of urgency' as, in less than a couple/few weeks, we could say.....oh, the 'WORLD' will know of Jewel and the EDAF!......which inspires me to post the following thought that has yet to be mentioned. Some EDAs have asked if these lists represent rules for EDAs. No, definitely not. The are not rules at all. These lists are simply to help us think in an organized way about all the good we bring the world right now and to understand how an EDA Foundation would differ from our own everyday acts of kindness in what it could accomplish. EDAs will always be free to express kindness in any way they choose. This collecting of our ideas will help to create the EDAF to do things in the world that we'd all like to see happen. Since we have a hard time understanding the Foundation while it remains conceptual, by thinking together about it we can make it real and bring it to life. Any EDAs that don't want to be part of an EDAF are free to not be, and vice versa. This is really just an attempt to channel all the wonderful energy of the EDAs into helping us see how we want things to work. It's up ot us as EDAs to decide how and what we do -- these ideas help us share in those goals. More ideas please!: EDA ACTS OF KINDNESS - - lending someone a shoulder to cry on - - helping someone with their homework - - giving blood (this can also be part of an EDAF drive) - - volunteering time at a local hospital (e.g. helping out on trips with patients, organizing parties to brighten the days of those hospitalized) - - helping small creatures across the road (animals and small children too) - - helping the elderly, the disabled with transportation, buying groceries, getting through the day - - giving coffee/warm drinks to the homeless in cold weather, giving iced tea/juices to the homeless in hot weather - - helping someone who's fallen off their bike, or hurt in some other way - - cleaning up trash in the community - - volunteering time in a neighbourhood soup kitchen - - helping out on community rebuilding projects for the poor - - taking the time to listen to others - - giving your time to the SPCA or animal shelter - - working on a crisis line or at a shelter for battered women - - if you're musical, playing before shutins or those in special care wards - - perform spontaneous generosity (e.g. buy your loved ones' dinner, give your sister or brother or best friend a graduation present) - - make dinner or a gift for someone you love - - Volunteer at a nursery school - - help a single parent out, making it easier for them to get through the day or to find time for themselves EDA FOUNDATION ASSISTED ACTS OF KINDNESS - - organizing financial fund-raisers (like the James Paul Kalanick Trust) for victims of motor vehicles, of violence, of medical misfortune etc. - - sponsoring concerts to just make people happy (and, if the situation arises, to raise awareness of a particular issue) e.g. Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel's Living Room Tour and other shows - - founding a scholarship to nurture musical talents (like Jewel needed to go to Interlochen) - - organizing a blood drive (also an individual EDA act, but on a bigger scale can involve arranging awareness, giving rides etc.) - - finding or building shelter for those left homeless by floods, earthquakes or other natural disasters - - work with St. Jude's Hospital to ease suffering of children afflicted with diseases - - trips/vacations or even free lunches for working people who can't afford them - - support victims of abuse and personal isolation in the entertainment industry - - help war victims (e.g. in Rawanda of the countries of the former Yugoslavia -- help internationally but focus on certain areas to be effective), those who suffer because of human greed, refugees and immigrants (including gathering donations of food, clothes etc.) - - guide people to a directed meditation (this may be recommended for EDAF organizers!) - - support for new artists who are struggling in the music/entertainment business (help get them recognition etc.) - - develop youth projects in communities to help keep kids out of trouble - - plant a tree (or trees in every community where there are EDAs) as a symbol of the EDAs and how we grow - - as another positive EDA symbol, plant a botanical garden to make a community more beautiful ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 1997 12:22:37 -0600 From: bennhoff Subject: RE: beauty i dont know about anyone else, but when im talking about music with people and some guy who doesnt know jewels music at all..goes off into this huge tangent of how beautiful she is...i am personally insulted for her... the one ideal of iconism, that jewel is heading for, is people will not appreciate her body more than her music...i think that is very dangerous.. Jewel has a very powerful message that is begining to alter the course of life for young girls...girls who "worship" jewel's music and is being conditioned by her message in her music....but when people only regard her as body of flesh...i think it degrades her spirit... moreso, we have developed into a culture based on physical pleasures...where we have made a profession of models...who are young and most times aneroxic...this worries me...i dont understand why, as humans, we need to classify people into beautiful and not beautiful...and the media is our own worse enemy...every body is beautiful...i think every one has their own personal style, and its sort of beauty in the eye of the beholder.... its very interesting that a women's worth is tied up on "being beautiful"...where beauty is defined as slim...never would anyone see the women equivilant of Blues Travelor...i for one am so bored with perfect, lean icons...i am bored with beautiful people...they do not represent humanity in anyway... i think that is what is so appealing about jewel to me...she is "beautiful" though she has made a career of not being beautiful...and teaching niave young people who are unconciously conditioned to acknowledge "beautiful people" to acknowledge other people who do not fit perfectly into the category of beauty... my thoughts...LISTEN TO SATELLITE!! also, she best not ever fix those teeth...they're the greatest :) xoxo Heather xoxo University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ "Is there still time? I'm assuming that projects like this would be helped by having an organization to coordinate the tree planting around the country or world, or to organize people in a community to plant a garden. I'm on the Digest Jewel list so every Digest or two I'll try and update the EDA ideas/goals lists (and note the time of my last reading so that we can keep track) -- but if anyone has more good ideas like this you can always add them to the list if you're on the loose mail version and then we'll have as updated and organized a collection as possible. The hope is to build something together that can then be taken off the list and used by the EDAF in our communities and around the world to make it a better place. It's fun to see things developing, dontcha think! This is great. Tony has pointed out that some of us prefer to stay low key on good deeds. That's true, too. Everyone can participate and share in their own ways. EDAs that are comfortable and want to tell others about things they've done can post telling their personal story (and add a single sentence summarizing the good deed to the ever-growing EDA/EDAF collected acts of kindness lists, if you feel like it) and EDAs who don't prefer Tony's approach, if you feel like it you can add the good deeds/acts to the lists of EDA/EDAF acts of kindness without going into any explanation or identifying yourself in a way that makes you uncomfortable. If all of us EDAs share all our ideas it can inspire more good thoughts and actions. Don't you think it's amazing how much momentum Jewel has gotten in her career by promoting just one album so far? I mean, she's going to be on the cover of Time which is a big deal, I think. I believe it's because she's come at the right time when the whole nation is full of cynics and fear with the right message for us to open ourselves as well as our hearts to each other. People are so afraid of each other these days and our guards are up high all the time.. myself included. I'm just glad that Jewel's going out there with the right message and attitude, it's just a matter of time now to see how she'll change the industry.. :) Hugs and kisses (in the most platonic way of course =) ) to all the EDAs in their climbs out of the deepest valleys of life. It's a tough world but you're all going to beat it. oh, and, I'm surprised that I didn't see anybody put Chime Bells as one of the songs that made you laugh! or maybe I skipped those messages. hehe love you all, christine ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 1997 12:57:43 -0600 From: bennhoff Subject: NJC: The quote of the day As I sit here at home eating taco bell (which makes infinitely smarter) = I have come up with the idea to take wasting my time to a new level.
