From my experience, it is recommended that you not publicize the organization until after incorporation, or at least until the trademark for EDAF has been secured. You'd be amazed how many people will try to pull a fast one on you if you advertize way too soon, especially if you're associated with someone as well-known as Jewel. Heck, it's dangerous right now to even send Jewel pictures to the photo-developers because the negatives are liable to be stolen by unscrupulous photo developing people if they realize what it is they're holding in their hands. > Anyways, > I think this would be a big help in getting people to > recognize the EDA Foundation as an official organization > as soon as all the legal work is done. Definitely. Incorporation will take a while however. The Attorney General of the state of incorporation will send the incorporation papers back if they find something wrong. The overall process can take from between 6-8 months. A lot will depend on how backlogged the AG's office is. > Perhaps if there > was a sentence like "The EDAs are in the process of > creating the EDA Foundation, a non-profit organization > dedicated to mending ills and restoring hope in the > community.", we could get the impetus that we need. > Again, Alan(MrBB) is it possible to contact Lenedra and > ask if she could suggest this to the author? At minimum, I would advise that the organizers trademark the EDAF name prior to the publishing of anything official. Ideally you don't want to publicize until you have an organization together for the exact reason that someone else may pull a fast one and seize the idea, abusing the name and what the EDAF is meant to do. Unless the EDAF can defend it's trademark (and currently it can't, even if it holds a trademark on EDAF), some con-artist can say that they're with that organization that was seen in TIME magazine, rip off a ton of people, and destroy the name of the EDAF before the EDAF is even incorporated to do anything. You would be surprised how many of these crooks operate continously between the state of California and Nevada and you better believe they read Time Magazine. The BBB tracks them, but they have to catch them first and it doesn't take much to ruin a good idea if we're not ready to accept the full responsibility. Welcome to the corporate world. I was really worried that the EDAF idea had withered on the vine -- obviously from all the responses it's still alive in many peoples' hearts. May the EDAs stay forever young (which is different than being young forever as a friend has pointed out). I've got to get back to work. Well, actually, they're not the BEST (no emotion is >any more valid than another, blah, blah, blah) but they're certainly >the easiest to express through art. Doncha think? I think that when you're really mad or depressed, you go deep inside your brain and you think more critically about things. I mean, when anger or whatever emotion overtakes you, you think of nothing else and your focus on what you're writing is more focused. That, I think, can lead to the writer writing a poem or whatever that can make the reader feel the exact same emotion that the writer felt. Mark - --- Inside my heart there's an empty room. Penn '97" Subject: NJC: EDAF contribution Dear List: Finally at long last, delurking. Thought I'd contribute what I could, which in this case happens to be a decent directed meditation for you to try at your convenience. It comes from another group that I have the pleasure of running, called the F&M Ninpo Society. The meditation is entirely written by me, all original material, so feel free to copy, repost, modify, or do whatever you like without restriction- it's the tiny little contribution I give for the EDAF E-Library. If it helps you, great! Chris - ----- Without the solid mental, spiritual, and moral grounding that spiritual training provides, we could easily lose track of what's important and find ourselves becoming heartless, violent, egomaniacal people- the very sort of people that we aspire to avoid or overcome. With this in mind, here is a simple meditation practice for you to try. Please note that meditation practice is relatively non-sectarian; that is, if you are a devout practitioner of another religion, this should not interfere with your belief system or values system. First, find a comfortable, quiet place away from the distractions of daily life. If you're in your room, power down your computer and turn off your telephone. Find a time of day when visitors will not be stopping by and when your roommate, if you have one, is unlikely to disturb you. Of course, if you and your roommate train, then you can practice together. Change into loose, comfortable clothing that won't be restrictive or distracting. Remove jewelry and other accessories that might distract you- turn off alarms on watches. Stretch out a little to eliminate any joint stiffness or kinks in your back, neck, or other joints that might distract you. Next, sit down on the floor. Sit in a posture that allows your back to be as naturally straight as possible. If you can, try sitting in Indian-seat, half lotus, or full lotus posture, or Japanese seiza (kneeling). Find a position that is comfortable for you, and will remain comfortable for extended periods of time. Let's go over the type of breath that you will be taking- place the tip of your tongue against the back of your upper front teeth. Breathe in naturally through your nose, allowing your lungs to fill with air. Expand your stomach and abdomen to allow your lungs to fully expand with air. Don't strain- go to your comfortable, natural limit. Then begin to exhale through your nose, slowly, softly, naturally. Let the air just sort of fall out of your lungs. This is the type of breathing that we will be using in the meditation drill, called a meditation breath. Now, with your back straight, your body relaxed and ready, close your eyes and take a meditation breath. As you breathe, pay attention to your sense of hearing. Listen carefully to your surroundings, and take note of what you hear. Listen to the sound of your breath, as it flows in and out of your lungs. Take a few meditation breaths- say, 9 of them, to pay attention to your hearing. Now, start to visualize what your breath looks like- you can use any visual cues you like, whether it be little clouds that flow in and out of your body, or maybe you might use the ocean shore, as the waves flow in and out. Take 9 meditation breaths while visualizing your breath flowing in and out of your body. The next step is to picture a kind of cleaning. Think up all the attributes that you'd like to imbue in yourself, all the virtues and things that you hold as important to you. Picture the air around you charged with positive energy, energy that you can tap into simply by breathing. See your breath as it draws in that positive energy, empowering you to become what you want to become. Take 9 breaths to visualize this. Think of the characteristics you'd like to reduce or remove from yourself- maybe you're too talkative, greedy, or some other characteristic that is preventing you from realizing your dreams. Picture these characteristics as negative energy inside of you. Breathe out, and see the negative energy leaving your body, flowing into the outside air. See the negative energy as it encounters the sea of positive energy surrounding you in the outside air. Watch as the negative energy simply dissolves away. Take 9 breaths to visualize this process of expelling negative energy outside of your body, where it dissipates harmlessly. Now coordinate the meditation. Picture yourself inhaling the positive energy of the world, and exhaling the negative energy from your body and mind. See yourself slowly but surely empowering yourself, becoming the person you want to become, as you breathe away obstacles in your path. No violence, no fighting- just watch as they slowly dissolve into nothingness. Take as many meditation breaths as you need to complete this process. Finally, return to listening to your breath. Listen to the sound of the outside world, and see yourself in the outside world once again, now more empowered, now more ready to handle the daily challenges of life. Take 9 meditation breaths to return to reality. Open your eyes at the conclusion of the 9 breaths. Stretch out again if you have found yourself becoming uncomfortable during the meditation process. - ----- ***** DISCLAIMER: This article originally appeared in Ninja News, the F&M Ninpo Society's informal training journal. I became The T-Shirt Guy (tm) and was in charge of the project. Then the EDA world was turned upside-down with the announcement of JewelStock.
