I have always thought that the time she takes between songs to talk is the BEST part of her concerts. :) I think any reviewer who says Jewel is unprofessional because she speaks her mind between songs just don't understand that life and music are intimately linked. Is this the largest piece about Jewel to appear in a UK magazine? There are four photos, the main one is a 3/4 page photo taken in Scotland, one of the photos is of 'That Dress' from the Grammies. I've snapped a couple of the photos and these can be viewed at the following addresses:- http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel/Jewel_Q0897a.jpg http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel/Jewel_Q0897b.jpg http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel/Jewel_Q0897c.jpg The article is mainly a history of her career with a few quotes from Jewel. The first word is Jewel cussing again, I really think her mother should have a word with Jewel about this ;-) A brief extract follows :- ' "Fuck you!" Jewel Kilcher [...] is flipping a cheery V-sign to the punter who has asked, before she's played a note, whether her breasts are real. His 40 fellow Glaswegians, mostly record shop owners, bussed in at record company expense in the hope they'll plug Jewel a tad more keenly, chuckle along.' I expect the magazine will be available in the US in a couple of weeks. US Magazines - ------------ I've seen a number of the US magazines, mentioned recently, in the London area. These are The Web Magazine, Details, Yahoo, Acoustic Guitar and Guitar World Acoustic. I guess the July issue of Interview will be available shortly since the June issue is curently on the shelves. I purchased these in newsagents in and around the Tottenham Court Road area. While I know asking people not to support these people is futile, I offer the ones supporting things like this good advice. Make sure you have recourse if you recieve nothing! How do you do this? Insist on a full name, phone number & street adress of the seller. Spend the extra 50 cents & call & verify . Sending your money to a PO Box or a Suite # (which are just non US PO boxes) after being contacted via email is like begging for them to steal your money. Unless you know the seller well, I would not send ANYTHING other than a check that THEY must process through their bank, thus leaving a paper trail at least. While I only support the sale of authorized merchandise, I also don't want to see inexperienced EDAs getting ripped off. This stuff is already happenning out there & its gonna get worse. Even God When God created touch, he did not believe that it would be used to pull a trigger on an innocent bystander, or torture and animal, so that we can wear make-up that we think makes us look beautiful. When God created ears, he did not believe that they would be used to hear the screams of little children as they are hit for no reason, or words of hatred, shouted in the street. When God created smell, he did not believe that it would be used to inhale the smoke from the burning bodies of Auschwitz, or the blood pouring from fresh slit wrists. When God created eyes, he did not believe that they would be used for the terror of stalking, or to witness the pain that all encounter in everyday lives. When God created lips, he did not believe that they would be used to shout racial slurs, or whisper rumors of messed-up lies. When God created the senses, he did believe that they would be used for happiness and joy, comfort and love. But in our twisted world, everything is backwards, Even God. This is not a religious poem, nor is it an antireligious poem. It mearly reflects my own opinions in the sense that I believe that if there is a god that it cannot be perfect, for nothing is. Please respond with what you think and I am also intereted to know wat religion everyone is out there. First of all, that should read "...how many people are going to agree with HIM, i don't even know if HIS idea will be considered realistically...". I'll announce it now...I am a GUY :-) Hope that clears up any confusion =) I hope people will take my post seriously...whether they agree or not. After all, everyone has a right to express themselves. But anyway, that's not the point. When Thirza quoted me, she missed the most important point of the sentence, which goes: " I know this sounds very intimidating, but these positions will be handled in a very casual manner. The main reason for this other than for sheer organization is for new members who need to know that there is actually something to the EDA Foundation..." Like I said, these positions will be handled in a very casual manner. I suppose I should have made this more clear, so here goes. In order to be an organized organization, we have got to have some kind of group leading the way. I also said that it might be led by Alan, Larry, Crunch, AND any of the other list veterans who know how to handle something like this. I in no way intended to limit this to them only...after all, I am not one of the list veterans...I joined in late February. Anyway, the board will be more of a committee with no one's input being valued more than another...but we simply have to have certain people take care of certain responsibilities. After all, it would not be feasible to have 20 people all doing Public Relations, right? So each leader will be dealing with a certain aspect of the EDAF, more like several committees and commitee chairpersons. Thirza has expressed her desire not to have a heirarchy of sorts. Granted, this "heirarchy" is a big misnomer, because one will not have more "power" than another...the positions are for organization only. Like i said, very casual. If someone has a question about EDAF, they should be able to ask one person, instead of running around asking several...what is the organization in that? Whether we end up with a group of leaders or whatever it pleases you to call it, to create an organization, we have got to be organized. This cannot be stressed enough. Thank you, Thirza for your reply =) Thirza also wrote though, >(why do i have a feeling ive dealt with this before?) So bring your middle finger to where your first finger was and put your first finger on that low F#. There you go. It's a G chord with F# for a root. (TECHNICALLY, the chord is actually Gmaj7/F# as there is no F# in G, but I digress....) We want to help and contribute whatever we can, but aren't fully clear on the EDAF concept. Since it's going to be up to all of us to give it life we have to all combine our energies to decide what it will become. I have an old message from Crunch saying that there's going to be an EDAF mailing list set up for people to post about EDAF related content. It's not fully operational yet, so we've got to pool our ideas on this list until it's ready to fly. Larry the lawyer is handling the paperwork to make the EDA Foundation a legal entity so it can achieve the purposes we choose to set for it. I don't think any of us fully understands the concept of the EDA Foundation yet. It is confusing. Since it's so new we won't really know what it is until we all start talking about it and what it means to us as EDAs. The EDAF is being born of our idealism. We now need to match our idealism with realism. Idealism + realism = positive action. The most important thing at this stage of forming the EDAF is to have a willingness to help and share. And it's our ideas that are needed now. People are sending me great messages about acts of kindness they perform and don't want any credit for, and are coming up with ideas for what the foundation could do. I believe the only way this dream will truly be realized, as we want it to be, and as Jewel wants it to be, is if we all equally share our thoughts and feelings. Some good deeds are best for EDAs to do in the community in their own individual way -- as has been said, a lot of good things are being accomplished right now just as we are. That's true and it won't change with the creation of the EDAF. Other acts of kindness will need the assistance of the EDA Foundation to work best. EDAs on-line and off-line will choose how best to practice kindness. We're free to do anything. We are all individuals and have our own special things to contribute. I'm working on a thread right now that will help things get focussed so we can see what this could really become. So for now, there's no need to e-mail Crunch or Mr BB or anyone else -- there's a way we can watch this idea grow together. I've held this opinion ever since I heard "WWSYS" on adult contemporary radio. I believe that Jewel is too famous for her music. Please hear me out. It is wonderful that she makes a living doing what she loves; living a creative existence. I don't wish her any deprivation of joy. I wish her all the joy in the world. However, when an ARTIST has two songs played to death on radio and their faces appear on countless magazine covers, it robs them of their humanity. It turns them into icons. It's not that the person changes, but the world's perception of them does. Icons don't have much depth because people won't let them. Consequently, people form very firm opinions on icons based on miniscule amounts of information. For example, there are actually people who CANNOT stand Jewel (now an icon), but they like other lesser known artists (non-icons) from the same vein. How do they know for certain that they can't stand Jewel? Well, they've heard the radio singles and they're not too terribly fond of what they heard. So what didn't they like about Jewel's two songs? The response I'm familiar with inadvertently details how un-radio like the songs are. The conclusion I draw from that is that Jewel's music is best enjoyed when listened to by some other means than radio. ie. at a friend's house who's just wild about this young Alaskan singer from San Diego, or at club you just happened to be at when this young woman with a poet's soul and an angel's voice took the stage, etc. Radio being the passive, apathetic medium that it is, requires little interest from the listener. YOUR stereo on the other hand, is totally dependent on YOUR interests. What I'm saying is, Jewel is not for the casual listener aka. radio listener. Her music seems to relate much better to passionate people who seek out other passionate people (see "EDA"). I still find it comical to hear WWSYS in office buildings full of people for whom the song prays. Yet they innocently sing along, never taking in Jewel's message, never digesting passion, never allowing that little ditty to become art. And I think we agree that Jewel's songs are definitely art. As pop songs, Jewel's songs fall just short of the mark. They're at least a little too passionate or a little too contemplative. The darn things just won't lay down in the background and fade into the wallpaper like a good pop song should! For me, Jewel's music came like a communion of sorts. I was looking for innocence, passion, and honesty. When I saw that spot two and a half years ago on "The New Music" featuring then-unknown Jewel, I knew exactly what it was that I had been seeking. I didn't know Jewel's live performances, I didn't know her past, I only knew what I could remember from hearing WWSYS twice and whatever performance clips were included in that spot. When I first listened to POY, I hung on every word, every note. I was hearing every song (except the first) for the first time. I listened ACTIVELY. This is not how people usually listen to the radio. I don't think Jewel can be truly appreciated through anything but ACTIVE listening. Now here she is on the radio, and people sing along but don't think about the words. That's why I feel that Jewel is too famous for her music.
