Hi Igor. I hate to burst your bubble, but according to the Point Sal State Beach Park rangers, there is no legal camping in the area; it is all privately owned land and land owned by Vandenberg AFB. The owners do not allow camping without permission. There are no beach homes available for rental in the area according to the Guadalupe Chamber of Commerce. There are no hotels or motels in Guadalupe. The nearest places to camp would be Pismo Beach. The nearest place to rent a motel would be Pismo or Santa Maria. What are you proposing? Klaatu, also the greeting used by these friendly space-dwellers, first came to earth in the 1950s to star in a Hollywood movie. Later Ringo Starr (isn't this all coming together now!) pictured their space ship on the sleeve to his 45 (single record) "Photograph". Ringo was seen in a space suit giving the Klaatu greeting salute. Around this same time a group of unidentified musicians, who also called themselves Klaatu, released an album -- the best known song on which is probably "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft". (Some in the music biz even speculated that Klaatu WAS the Beatles.) Klaatu, the band, never revealed themselves but it is believed they were based, while on earth, in the province of Ontario, from where -- yes, of course -- Ackughblah (AKA Gianny angel) is now sending out signals. The Carpenters and Babes in Toyland also covered "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" but those links require further investigation. Another thread to be followed up on is the possible knowledge that Jewel may have as to these events. It's recently been discovered that Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is synchronized to align with key events in The Wizard of Oz and we all know who Dorothy is... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 15:36:39 -0400 From: Gianfranco Covello Subject: Re: NJC: Some very good artists to check out! I had low expectations for MTV Unplugged. I hate MTV, they are corporate monsters to the nth degree. But I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised with most of the Unplugged show last night. OK there were way too many commercials but she did get in ten songs anddidnt play too much PoY stuff although she did play all 3 "hit/pop" songs. Just quickly, she looked great. This show was not as good as the VH1 Hard Rock Live show in my opinion but was pretty close. The first two songs were absolutely phenomenal, better than anything I have seen or heard Jewel do in well, maybe almost nine months now. That was the best version of "Satellite" I have heard yet, sooo passionate. Then what a surprise with "Boy Needs a Bike" one of my most favorite Jewel songs from back in the Innerchange days. Whoa! The rest of the show never reached the intensity of the first two songs but it held its own. I still think no band that backs her will live up to solo Jewel just her and a guitar but this particular band seems well put together. The use of instruments like a cello, upright base, and mandolin are interesting and different choices. The sax is a nice addition and Josh can blow but it doesn't exactly fit as perfectly. But one thing you have to commend her for is mixing three distinct genres in what amounts to maybe 40 minutes of actual music. It's folk, jazz, and country, no pop-Yay. As for the rest of the songs, YWMFM sounded more like the original album version with the Stray Gators than it has in over a year, but I still dont like the song and its played out as hell. Foolish Games has lost something for me and used to be one of my fave PoY songs back in early 95, now I can see that its on the verge of getting played out. But again you have to give her credit for the apparent emotional torment she goes through during the song, very painful looking and sung well. WWSYS, infinitely better than the version she recently did on SNL but still not as good as other versions of the song, nice jazzy feel to it though and apparently Jewel likes the changes to it. "Last Dance Rodeo" didnt impress me, Jewel should have stuck with her instincts and scrapped it. Reminds me of the unimpressed reaction I had to Stranger(Enter From the East) from the last tour. "Fragile Flame" is good to hear cause its old and solo acoustic but again, its not that full of a song in my opinion, narrow and short. "Passing Time" was interesting, liked it a lot. Very lyrical and sparse, Jewel at her best, good to see she is still writing new material. "Too Darn Hot" is marginal, its an interesting trek into a new genre for Jewel, but its not her best, it seems like shes trying to hard or pushing it when she does this song, her acapella rendition of "Behind the Wall" is so so much better. "Angel Standing By" is the closer again and has some elements of what makes a good closer but there are better songs she should be substituting here. So, like I said, overall it was awesome seeing Jewel in a small dark intimate venue where the audience sat quietly through her music, something that will be sickeningly lacking on the next times she plays live solo in August I am sure. And it was good that she did lots of non album stuff and changed that which she did do. Good job again Jewel, I was impressed, my expectations were low but you came through big. Congrats. We all know that Jewel Kilcher is a star...but now, there's also a star that is 'Jewel Kilcher.' You will see from the enclosed that we have arranged to have a star named after you. The official name we gave it is 'Jewel Kilcher (Jewel of the North)'. We decided it should be a star that is visible all year, and should be as close as possible to the North Star, because it's emblematic of a constant beacon of hope that has guided people for hundreds of years. We hope that you accept this in the spirit with which it was intended. I suppose we could have tried to have a fish named after you, but we know what your preference is on that choice... I didn't expect to hear Jewel's FG in the movie, because the soundtrack says music INSPIRED BY Batman & Robin, which means it wasn't used in the movie, but rather is just another marketing ploy to sell remotely connected merchandise. 2. There seem to be two ways to portray Batman: the campy television and early comics version, and the dark, brooding version that was seen in the Tim Burton movies as well as the graphic novel "Batman: The Dark Knight," by Frank Miller. In a show on the SciFi Channel, they mentioned that Warner Bros. weren't too pleased with Burton's almost morbid view of the characters, and so brought in Schumacher to liven things up. To that extent, Schumacher succeeded. However, it doesn't seem that a happy Bat is what moviegoers want to see. I certainly didn't. 3. The actual movie was, in my opinion, a 4 out of 10. I usually rate movies based on whether or not I look at my watch during the movie. If I'm totally caught up in the movie, I don't have any desire to look at my watch (e.g. "Jurassic Park" was a no-watch movie). I looked at my wrist twice for the time. Way too much neon, the close-up shots of the "anatomically correct" suits were ludicrous, and the characters were poorly developed. Don't blame Schwarzenegger (sp?) for his poor performance, I think he did the best he could with the material he was handed. Same goes for Uma Thurmann. Why in the world did they have Elle MacPherson play Bruce Wayne's girlfriend when she had about 5 speaking lines in the entire movie? They could have had any actress in there, and it wouldn't have made a difference in the world. My favorite has been this beesting Allergy. No where else can you have such a close to death experience, without having fun. Sure everyone thinks that bees are cute and fun to have around, but let me tell you, when you get stung, its nothing. Bow staying overnight in a hospital and preventing the use of a great summer makes it all that much better. Of course having a near death experience was kind of cool. It sort of gives you a totally new outlook on life. I know that this is not interesting to some, but thought others would enjoy it. > > >Okay, I know only a few people actually filled that out, but so far, all of > >them chose Chicken Pox as their favorite childhood illness. Now for a perfect compliment to the out of this world attitude of Ms Mandy, it would have to be Dennis/Gianny/John Eric/(insert your name here). Any other questions. And I only have "Dilate" but I've heard her other albums and seen her in concert, once. :) So, if than that makes me an expret, hey! I'm not complaining :) BTW "Like I Said" is a very good album because it's a combonation of "Ani DiFranco" and "Not So Soft", Her first 2 albums. :) Pud - Our resident Ani expert?, along w/ my sis Chels ;) - and The Great Puddini - New ruler if the world.... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 15:33:32 -0500 (CDT) From: dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu (Derrick) Subject: ***Houston Lilith Fair EDA Update*** To all EDA's, As you all know, the Lilith Fair will begin soon and continue throughout the Summer. One of the locations is going to be in Houston, TX at the Woodlands Pavillion (just north of Houston on I-45). This takes place on Sunday, August 3. Gates open at 3:00pm, show starts at 4:30pm. An EDA gathering is being planned for this as there are already several who either have tickets or plan on getting them. This won't be as big a gathering as Rockfest, but just something where a few of us can join one another and have a great time while enjoying Jewel's performance. There may be a dinner planned for after the show, but things are still in the very preliminary stages. For now, this is just a list of the EDA's so far that have expressed interest in being there (and a few do already have tickets). There are 3 sections to choose from for seats. Reserved (covered), reserved (uncovered), and lawn seats. The reserved sections have actual seats with backs on them. Prices are $41 for the covered section, $31 for the uncovered, and $23 for lawn seats. All of the tickets also have a service charge...I believe it was about $4.25 It would be great if there were 10-15 EDA's at this. There will be 3 stages. A main stage, second stage, and what they're calling an acoustic stage for up-and-coming artists. Also many booths will be set up as well and an on-site Border's music store. The schedule for the various stages are as follows: - -------------------------------------------------------------- Artist Time Start Time Finish Stage - -------------------------------------------------------------- GATES OPEN 3:00pm Katell Keineg 4:30pm 4:50pm Second Kelly Willis 5:10pm 5:40pm Second Lisa Loeb 5:50pm 6:25pm Main Mary Black 6:35pm 7:05pm Second Emmylou Harris 7:15pm 7:50pm Main Joan Osborne 8:05pm 8:40pm Main Jewel 9:00pm 9:50pm Main Sarah McLachlan 10:10pm 11:00pm Main - -------------------------------------------------------------- * Jewel and Sarah appear to be co-headlining this as they're getting the longest sets! Acoustic stage: Alisha's Attic and one other band will be on this stage that will be located inside the on-site Border's music store. Each set will be 15 mintues. Also, other Lilith artists may drop by this stage throughout the day for acoustic sets but this won't be announced until an hour before the gates open and ONLY on the Lilith Fair official website. So, everyone needs to check the website about 2:00pm on Sunday, August 3 to see what special performers may do an acoustic set on this stage. Jewel maybe??? :-) Keeping my fingers crossed. Anyone who thinks they may be interested in attending this, please e-mail me and I can add you to the list. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Houston Lilith Fair EDA List ============================ Tien Dang - Houston TX - tdang2@Bayou.UH.EDU Bill and Carrie Dallner - Chicago, IL - dallfin@flash.net Derrick Karacostas - Hitchcock, TX - dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu Stacy Katz - Houston, TX - stacy@nol.net Farr Shepherd - Tecumseh, OK - obie1@ou.edu 2 other EDA's whom I'm still waiting on their names, etc. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll be updating this list about every other week (or more often if needed).
