It all started for me on Thursday with picking Mia up from the airport. After we left there I had to take her to see some classic Oklahoma sights, you know like the Cowboy Hall Of Fame. After a nice dinner we were off to SAM's for the first barrage of food and supplies for our trip. We finally made it home later and started the preperations for some great food that we would have over the weekend. Friday morning we were up and off early to pick up my friend Ashe at the airport and then headed over to the RV place. Just as we were about to settle for a small version of the EDA HQ because ours hadn't made it, the "Pimp RV" rolled in. We all fell in love and decided that it was worth the wait. We finally got out of there and after another stop at SAM's we were off to Fort Worth. I think we made it to the speedway around dusk. The traffic was relativly slow, enough so that we got out and had a few conversations with people in the cars behind us. Thanks to the miracle of the cell phoe we met up with the others and immediatly got out the grill and started cookin. Everyone quickly took advantage of the shower and relaxed until the party started. Eric and I went off for a few hours exploring the Mardi Gras like atmosphere. I had to come back to sneak the RV out in the wee hours of the mornin to fill the water tank so we could all have fresh showers in the morning. After a whopping 2 hours of sleep on the HUGE dashboard of the RV I was up at dawn with the sounds of bass vibrating my stomach. Everyone slowly awoke and made it in to eat some breakfast and watch some Sat morning cartoons =) After shifts were assigned to come back to the RV we all left and headed in the HUGE Raceway to find some seats. I only got to see the first couple of bands before my shift had come around and I was off to the HQ. Turns out that there was always sombody in the RV making use of that wonderful A/C. I headed back to the venue with Dan and Pete and hung out with them. They managed to sneak me in the press box and find a route backstage, which would come in very handy later =) Dan decided that he would be a saint and let Mia and I use the passed to get some close up pictures of Jewel from the Media tower with my camera, he wouldn't know how close we would get =) Mia and I took that route backstage again after very strategic timing so as not to get stopped and finally made it into the back. There we would stay for the next 4 hours hanging out with All of the bands. After a lot of patience and low key movment we got some great pics of Jacob Dillan, Collective Soul, and many others until finally.....JEWEL. I was squatting down in front of the Counting Crows tour bus to rest when she pulls up in a white bronco and I was about to jump out of my shorts. I got some great pics which will be up on Erics page when he gets back from camping. I think even Bob Scott would be proud of me =) After waiting nearly an hour and a half for her to go on I saw my friend Jennifer who is dating Zac from the Nixons and I had in my hand her Stage Pass so I could get on stage to take pictures of Jewel while performing. She took off and came back a few minutes later saying that she needed it until she went on so she wouldn't get kicked out and that she would find me. Jewel was on the way out and Mia and I decided that we didin't want to chance missing Jewel so we went out front to the VIP seating and got some pics from in front of the stage. We tryed to get backstage again after that but the security was tight by now so we were out of luck. We made our way back to the others and decided to head out early so as to beat the traffic and make it to our campsite to relax. We made it out easy enough but didn't have much luck finding the site until it was already closed. We slept out front until they opened and started cooking. I patened the famous FARR-JITA'S and did a little swimming. After waiting out the Tornado warnings and rain we headed back to Oklahoma so Ashe could catch his flight out. I finally got home about 11:00 and after a short talk in IRC we were out for the count. The next day was host to CLEANING, lots of stuff inthe RV that had to be removed and cleaned. Mia and I rode up to OKC one last time before we stopped for lunch and she was off for COLUMBUS where she lives =) I wanted to thank all the people who were able to make it and help this be another memorable EDA gathering. Also special thanks to Mia for her help with just about everything and being the EDA mom in Fort Worth. To Angela who I hope is feeling much better for her help in all the local affairs. To Derrick for the Awesome flags and his help on the committee. To Christina who I bonded with in NJ for all the hard work she put in on the carpooling. To Dan Stark for being a great individual and giving me the best back stage experience I could have ever wished for. And really to everyone for their generosity for helping me recoup on the RV. I really had a great time and hope everyone else did too. Stay Tunned for the RF WebPage courtesy of Eric with some crazy pics of all of us and hopfully some great pics of Jewel and other RF artists. Jewel was a trooper, as usual, and turned in an okay performance, but I felt let down somehow. The songs choosen for broadcast weren't her top material. Jewel has some great, rocking stuff, and some wonderful more "folky" material, but she seems to have choosen a middle road in the presentation. Notably absent: SIBTW, Deep Water, 1000 Miles, etc - admittedly older material, but still, ahem, gems of songs. I'm not sure that the addition of a sax player was helpful (well, for one song it was, the other it wasn't - sorry for not being more specific). When Jewel simply plays guitar and sings, it can be a magickal moment. The addition of a band nesseciatates a change in material - not all songs sound good just because you add a band. I'm not liking the "rockin'" version of FG much. The "original", on POY, is very well produced, and is exactly what the song should be. Changing the song in the hope of making it the third single off of POY only continues to distance Jewel from her strength as a singer/songwriter, and lays another brick in the pop star wall. Oh well, I can feel the heat of flames coming through already(*). - -Jeffrey- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Jun 1997 17:33:47 -0400 From: levin Subject: Do you think..... >Do you think that MTV will make an Unplugged CD with Jewel? Jewel's performance on Unplugged last night was decent, but IMO not good enough to be made an album. If you look at other bands that have an Unplugged CD ( 10000 Maniacs and Nirvana ), you will see that their performance on Unplugged was one of the best performances of their career and was a perfect example of what the band exemplified. The songs from these bands had also been released by the time of their Unplugged performance so people knew it right away and enjoyed it. I would venture that most people who saw Unplugged last night were not familiar with the songs Jewel sang, and the audience and TV viewers, other than deep Jewel fans got really into the performance. For that reason, I don't think we will see an Unplugged CD of Jewel, at least not for now. If one is ever released, I think it will only come after one or two more albums have been released, or until the songs that she sang on Unplugged are released on one of Jewel's albums. So instead of e-mailing all of you separately, I'll make my proposition right now. :) If you guys send me $5 in cash via snail mail, then I'll go out and buy tapes and dub this performance for you. The $5 includes the $3.20 for shipping and about $2 for the tape itself. How does that sound? Anyone interested can e-mail me at romarch@juno.com. I also have copies of other televised performances like Hard Rock Live, Rockfest, SNL, Nick Awards, and MTV Movie Awards. My take on unplugged was that she didn't want it to be exactly like the hard rock live on VH1. i was as disappointed as the next to not hear her sing my favs SIBTW and 1,000 Miles, but then i watched my hard rock live tape and i was okay. I was happy that she didn't sing them in a way, because it gave us all the opportunity to hear her sing other songs. thats just how i feel, feel free to agree or disagree! =) Love, Mandy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Jun 1997 11:37:58 +0100 From: Myles MacRae Subject: Re: Getting to know you... Personally, I totally loved the show despite the fact that some of my favorite Jewel songs were noticeably absent (but for a good reason), which is the point of this post. I think that the songs that were played on the MTV Unplugged show were chosen with three things in mind. First: Songs were picked that fit into the "unplugged" format. You are right, Jewel has "some great, rocking stuff" but this was not "Hard Rock Live". This was MTV Unplugged and so all the songs were "unplugged" type songs. Simple. Second: I think that they wanted to introduce new material to the public to counter what Jewel said (a tipoff) that she's tired of PoY and knows that the public is too. So, to fill the time until Atlantic releases Jewel #2, they included some of her other great material. The question remains, why were some of her absolutely best songs left off the MTV Unplugged show?... and that leads us to the next criteria for selecting the songs for MTV Unplugged... Third: I believe that certain songs were left off the show because they are the strongest contenders for the first singles from Jewel #2. That would be "Carnivore", "Sometimes It Be That Way", "1,000 Miles Away", and "Deep Water". These songs have "monster hit" written all over them. They are amongst the most powerful songs in Jewel's repetoire and to put them on the MTV show would have diluted their impact on the next album. I'm convinced that Jewel's next album will be one of the most popular and highest quality albums of all time. I can't wait!!! Kris Kane PS I'm also convinced that Jewel is the prime contender to inherit the mantle from Dylan as the most influential singer/songwriter of *this* era. I just thought it meant what it said. But then I have all the imagination of a carrot drowning in peanut butter.
