No, not Jewel (I wish). But this thin young woman with short blond hair and round oakleys is standing on the sidewalk with her bags and there are about 4 others with instrument cases next to her. Hmm I thought..I bet they played at Rockfest last night. Hmm I thought...that woman bears a striking resemblance to Gwen Stefani from No Doubt. So I walked up to her and said "Are you Gwen Stefani?" and she said "Yeah" and I said "I just wanted to say that you did a great job last night...I really enjoyed it" and she said "Thanks...I really appreciate it" and I turned and walked off in case they didn't want to be disturbed anymore. So anyways, I got to meet Gwen Stefani from No Doubt and if that doesn't make you No Doubt fans jealous nothing will ;-) Oh yeah...and on the way back to my house, I turned on the radio and the deejay from 94.5 The Edge, Alex Smith, said that "the two best acts were Jewel and Bush". I graduated out of UC Berkeley as a Mechanical Engineer in the middle of the biggest layoff of engineers in Bay Area history. Only EECS and ChemE's were mostly immune to that. One of my hobbies throughout my earlier years and thru college was computers, but since I didnt' have a computer degree, I wasn't going to be on the top tier of computer jobs. Since each of us controls our destiny, I chose to go to Boston and take my chances. Well, I got a job working with computers and the Web, teaching, and working on a Master's degree. We control our own destines, but we have no power to decide what will become of the world. We shape our own little corner and when a hurricane blows through, everyone is affected and decides which way to go. I don't believe in fate. I believe that things will happen to remind us how inconsequential we really are and that it's up to us to DO something about it. > When I have to leave a place, > it's because I decide to leave it. Date: 25-Jun-1997 02:27pm EDT From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: and I thought Unplugged was gonna suck... I had low expectations for MTV Unplugged. I hate MTV, they are corporate monsters to the nth degree. But I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised with most of the Unplugged show last night. OK there were way too many commercials but she did get in ten songs anddidnt play too much PoY stuff although she did play all 3 "hit/pop" songs. Just quickly, she looked great. This show was not as good as the VH1 Hard Rock Live show in my opinion but was pretty close. The first two songs were absolutely phenomenal, better than anything I have seen or heard Jewel do in well, maybe almost nine months now. That was the best version of "Satellite" I have heard yet, sooo passionate. Then what a surprise with "Boy Needs a Bike" one of my most favorite Jewel songs from back in the Innerchange days. Whoa! The rest of the show never reached the intensity of the first two songs but it held its own. I still think no band that backs her will live up to solo Jewel just her and a guitar but this particular band seems well put together. The use of instruments like a cello, upright base, and mandolin are interesting and different choices. The sax is a nice addition and Josh can blow but it doesn't exactly fit as perfectly. But one thing you have to commend her for is mixing three distinct genres in what amounts to maybe 40 minutes of actual music. It's folk, jazz, and country, no pop-Yay. As for the rest of the songs, YWMFM sounded more like the original album version with the Stray Gators than it has in over a year, but I still dont like the song and its played out as hell. Foolish Games has lost something for me and used to be one of my fave PoY songs back in early 95, now I can see that its on the verge of getting played out. But again you have to give her credit for the apparent emotional torment she goes through during the song, very painful looking and sung well. WWSYS, infinitely better than the version she recently did on SNL but still not as good as other versions of the song, nice jazzy feel to it though and apparently Jewel likes the changes to it. "Last Dance Rodeo" didnt impress me, Jewel should have stuck with her instincts and scrapped it. Reminds me of the unimpressed reaction I had to Stranger(Enter From the East) from the last tour. "Fragile Flame" is good to hear cause its old and solo acoustic but again, its not that full of a song in my opinion, narrow and short. "Passing Time" was interesting, liked it a lot. Very lyrical and sparse, Jewel at her best, good to see she is still writing new material. "Too Darn Hot" is marginal, its an interesting trek into a new genre for Jewel, but its not her best, it seems like shes trying to hard or pushing it when she does this song, her acapella rendition of "Behind the Wall" is so so much better. "Angel Standing By" is the closer again and has some elements of what makes a good closer but there are better songs she should be substituting here. So, like I said, overall it was awesome seeing Jewel in a small dark intimate venue where the audience sat quietly through her music, something that will be sickeningly lacking on the next times she plays live solo in August I am sure. And it was good that she did lots of non album stuff and changed that which she did do. Good job again Jewel, I was impressed, my expectations were low but you came through big. Congrats.
