Hi everyone: I just received a message from Bart, the manager of the Living Room Tour of Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel. Bart says, and this is NOT for sure yet, that Cindy and Elizabeth won't be able to bring their tour to Salt Spring Island for a Northwest EDA-fest between August 1 - 10 BUT (Stinky drum roll, please...) IT IS POSSIBLE that they can head north and perform on the island maybe on August 29!! Again, this is not for sure, and there are logistics to be worked out on all sides, but IF it happens I propose we call the event Indian Summerstock since it'll be Indian Summer here then -- when the temperatures are mildest, the sunsets most colourful, the evenings long and the night sky filled with constellations that circle round the Jewel of the North star. So far I've heard from a half-dozen Northwest (British Columbia and Washington) based EDAs as well as Kris (from California?) and Marian (from Germany) who have expressed interest in coming to Salt Spring Island. Marian will be in North America starting in early August so, hopefully, with the possible island concert/EDA gathering being the August 29th weekend she'll still be here. If not, we'll have to find a way to get together with Marian earlier in Seattle or wherever she'll be... So, while it's not yet officially on, start thinking about Indian Summerstock starting August 29 and let me know who can come so we can organize everything (rides, carpools, accomodation, expenses etc. for the artists etc. etc.) Don't want to get anyone's hopes higher than mine, but, with all of us cooperating we could have a big Northwest gathering with music by Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel. P.S. Great to see that STARRY NIGHT is happening in California. Igor's posted about it to the Jewel-News list. It may be on this list, too, but I won't know until the next Digest arrives. I'm going to try and go, but I'm STILL committed to the same work project that swallowed up my May and now June. Here's hoping all around. And with STARRY NIGHT being July 10 or so and, possibly, INDIAN SUMMERSTOCK being August 29 maybe EDAs can plan to attend both events! Hi Diamond and all EDAs unfamiliar with the revered title of "kookybaka". Kookybaka means the refinement of the soul through time -- most commonly it refers to the refinement of a LAWYER's soul through time. At one end of the legal spectrum you find the litigious weasel lawyers and the lawyers who represent litigious weasels. Far on the other end you'll find the kookybaka lawyers. While there are several present and future lawyers on this list (just ask Eugene!) only one, so far, has adopted the kookybaka title. That's Larry (who goes by many other names, but I'm keeping this factual and concise). Judges are next to assume the mantle. (Since Jewel and Bob Dylan are busy at the moment.) Larry, being a lawyer, is expect to one day legally change the motto of California to "the kookybaka" state so that all may know and share the pride that Diamond feels... Since it was Jewel of Alaska, the largest state in the union, who coined the term "kookybaka" wouldn't this be a SJC post? (The lines between SJC and JC and NJC can be hard to make out...) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jun 1997 18:07:11 -0400 (EDT) From: RedDeath10@aol.com Subject: JC: Rockfest 97 Angelfood???? My cousin and I arrived about 3:00 on Friday. After driving around an hour or so, we realized we were the first EDA's there (we think). So we decided to go walk around some and check out the speedway. Upon entering the inner part of the speedway, we bumped into John Norris of MTV who was there with a crew setting up for a later segment to be broadcasted. That was pretty cool. I didn't know he was from Houston, (close to where I'm from). After another hour, we went back to the campsite, again looking for any other EDA's. After driving another 20 mintues or so, my cousin said he noticed 3 guys chasing us in our car. So I stopped and found out it was Crash Boy, Tom, and Steve. Wow! EDA's really exist! My first experience meeting other list members. Turned out that Angela, Christina, Dan, Tien, Andy and a few others were there too already. *** Sure would have liked to hear you play the guitar Angela! :) So we followed them back to the temporary EDA parking space. We found out the RV would be arriving later than expected so after setting up tents, we checked out the tailgate party bands. I saw Duncan Shiek and The Nixons (the Nixons rocked!), then headed back to the camping area. The RV soon arrived with Farr, Mia, Ashe, and Jessie (non-EDA). I hope I'm not leaving anyone out. For anyone that would like to know, Farr rented this awesome RV...top notch quality. We had one the nicest ones there. Thanks Farr! We also had tons of food and drinks courtesy of Farr with the help of Mia preparing the food. Farr, I just hope you got "some" money back for all you spent and the time involved. We BBQ'd and chatted awhile. Later on, Bill and Carrie Dallner arrived. There was a nice size crowd by the end of the day. Everything went well, until about midnight when all hell broke loose! All I can say is imagine a Mardi Gras parade times 100! Riot isn't a good word to use, maybe chaos. That's better. Loud music, tons of cars/trucks, beer being thrown everywhere, free strip shows, even rumors of a death metal band that decided to set up and play there! It was really crazy. Needless to say, I got about 2 hours of sleep. So we get up and go stand in line about 6:30 Sat. morning. The gates opened at 8:00 and by 8:30am we were in our square foot of space that we would remain in until 11:00 that night! (give or take a couple inches) The first band went on about 9:30. 13 bands, and 15+ hours later it was over. I left half-way through No Doubt's set, I couldn't take the crowds anymore and had long been out of water. On the verge of dehydration...no food all day either. It was about 10:30 at this time. I missed Bush and another show by the Nixons who played last. Everyone sounded great though! I was impressed. Ashe, Tom, and Tien worked there way up front to where my cousin and I were (about 100 feet back from the stage) and we all saw Jewel perform. She was amazing! Lots of new stuff, lots of new versions, and even a cuss word in front of 300,000+ concert goers! Wow! She looked great, sounded great, and played for the better part of an hour in 95 degree heat with hardly no wind. I think she may have been a little late arriving because her crew stalled about 50 minutes setting up the set, even to the point to where the stage manager ordered them to start taking it down for the next band. She just barely made it in time. Great job on stalling, crew! She wasn't supposed to go on until 5:30, but because of whatever reason, it was only about 4:40 when the band before her finished. So she wasn't really "late", it's just that everyone else was ahead of schedule. So it kind of looked bad. But she rocked hard! Yes, *Rocked*! I saw a side of Jewel that's not shown very often. She actually got the better part of 300,000 people really into her songs. Paula Cole did a nice job as well at "entertaining" the large crowd. No, Jewel didn't yodel, although a few requests were made...so I'm still 0-2 for hearing Jewel yodel live. Maybe she will at the Lilith Fair. After Jewel's performance, I managed to sneak backstage and said hi to her and got an autograph...ha ha ha ha...in my dreams. Just joking. I was just hallucinating when I thought I was talking with her. Standing up for 10 hours in 95 degree heat being kicked in the head, squeezed to death, and on the verge of dehydrating will do that to you I guess. So we left the speedway about 11:00pm. The RV and some other EDA's had already left for a nearby campground and we were leaving to find a hotel...no more loud music at 4:00am for me...no thank you. So after an interesting trip north to Wichita Falls, I finally got to sleep by 4:00am. Woke up at 9:00. So in 3 days, I had 10 hours of sleep total. All in all, it was alot of fun...although there were some things that I now know I won't do next year. Like camp at the track. And I know to bring 2 coolers in with more water and FOOD next time! And I know where to stand now without getting trampled on. I'm not giving that away though. Sorry. It was the prime real estate on Sat. Only problem was that it was taken long before I got inside. I hope Jewel returns next year, but if not, I'll probably still make the trip if I like at least half of the bands playing. So that's my Rockfest experience. Well, of what I can remember...just joking! Beautiful, of course. No surprise. BUT, when I opened up the case to slide the CD in...there in big letters...NOT FOR SALE. 'Hmmm', thought me, 'Paying $24.99 plus tax...I'm not the swiftest of people, but, golly, that felt like a sale.' My question, has my record store just ripped me off? Not that I really particularly care. They'd have to pry the CD from my cold, dead hands to get it back. What's money anyways? But, you know, if Jewel doesn't get anything from this...well, that's pretty shitty. But then we lost the beauty pagent because Gian's hairy chest scared the judge. Alas the tied breaker was PUDDING WRESTLING!!!!! So obviously we know who won THAT. Jewel interacts better with Steve & the Rugburns than any other band she performs with. Not only does she sing, she talks to them during the show and watches them play during interludes. She hardly ever even acknowledges any other performers when she sings with a band. Shes just much more relaxed performing with Steve and/or the Rugburns. Bottom Line: She smiles more. Liz ended up getting a ride her sister, Shelly, TO Jewelstock (Toledo->Woodstock, with Michael Szabo and his friend, Greg). She then opted to stay for the second show. Shelly could not. Undaunted, Liz got a ride FROM Jewelstock (Woodstock->Toledo) with Tom Proven and Gerrit, who were headed back to California. Liz had never met Tom or Gerrit before JS, but gained enough "goodness" from them, that she trusted her life to him for over five hundred of miles. =) All these people (Liz, Shelly, Tom, Gerrit) have become significant EDAs. In fact, Liz could start a franchise! Not only has she become a part of this lists legend, she has made such an impact that on her sixteenth birthday (Feb 15, 97), at least 25 EDAs traveled to her house from all over the country to help her celebrate, with no Jewel show in sight! (Shelly, of course, hosted the party wonderfully!) =) This is one of the many stories that make this list so unique. Liz entrusted the EDAs with her life an instant after meeting them. That trust has continued to grow and thrive throughout the EDA community. Many similar events have happened all across this nation and others. This list centers around Jewel, but it is ABOUT the EDAs!! =) What other examples of "EDA-ness" have you witnessed ?? =) *** *** *** *** *** From: MEFAN22@aol.com Date: Mon, 24 Jun 1996 02:27:27 -0400 Subject: Jewelstock Anyone that wants to drive by Toledo, OH and pick up little young me would be very kind.
