To understand the answer you have understand how a cd is amnufactured. The first, most important, and most expensive step is to make a master. this is bassically a digital tape that all the other cd's will be made from. This process take much less effort and money if you have a digital copy of the music i.e. cd, dat. With analog tape you have to spend time filtering out the noise on the tape. Trust me it's much easier to make a master from a perfect digital copy, than an analog tape that a 5th generation copy. Basically if we start burning cd's we are making perfect digital copies that could easy be mastered and manufactured in the 1000's. However, from expereince with working directly with CD-R's (the CD-Rom drives that are Recordable), the failure rate of 'burning' a CD using a $500-$600 unit is pretty high. About 1 out of 4 CD's will not burn correctly. Also, there is no real direct way of copying from tape to CD using one of these units (the computer would have to be have decently powerful with a large hard drive to copy the entire tape to it's HD, encode it as a 44,000Mhz CD quality file, then burn it on. If any one is interested, once I get my collection of AngelFood going, I can try out burning a few test CD's. I was NOT aware of Jewel's request though. And I merely replied to the original posting, thinking I could be helpful to the list and any members who wanted to preserve Jewel on CD. NO, IT WAS NOT MY INTENT TO SELL ANY OF THESE. Hell, I didn't even get a chance to read the posting about NOT making these CD's before I replied. I'm sure many of you have replied to a posting before seeing that a reply was already written. Once again, sorry for the breach in policy. But I have not been on this list for more than a week. For those of you who kindly informed me of the rules, thank you. And for those of you who were rude, chill. People make mistakes and sometimes, people aren't aware of the offences. - --------------------------[jaeger@wpi.edu]-------------------------- Quach B. Hai Parametric Tech.
