John Thayer 06/19/97 03:08 PM I just became a subscriber to the list..Jewel is my favorite artist and that was the main reason to subscribe. But what I found out is that I can express my intermost feelings :) about myself..It is also great to interact with Angels. They have brought joy and meaning to my life just by reading the postings and news articles. Also there are so many Angels out there to listen to me..I just read and respond when something strikes a feeling inside of me..it's also just fun...John T. I am somebody. I am me. I like being me. Be patient with me im still learining!!! =) Adrian Dupleiss posted my original post earlier today. The Trust fund set up for James Kalanick is an ongoing project, not limited to EDAs. Donations will be much appreciated for years to come. If anyone would like another copy of the original post, please e-mail me! As EDAs, in the various spin-offs for the JPK Trust, we raised almost $5000 !!! And we made an EDA out of James!! =) The current EDA drive for the JPK Trust is drawing to a close, although, again I stress, the trust fund will continue to be open for gifts. The "Hard Drive for Jeff" campaign ended many, many months ago. For those that are not aware: Jeff Wasilko owns the hardware that houses and administers this list, as well as many others (please, check out the Smoe Web page: http://www.smoe.org ). Last fall (?), Jeff needed some hardware upgrades to keep the lists running smoothly. EDAs pitched in and bought that software for him! =) Thanks SO much to those that have made both of these drives reality!! =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 23:21:00 -0500 From: Greg Dunn Subject: Re: Is Jewel not original? >She hasn't brought, nor does she have to bring, any innovations to the >*music industry*.However, she did bring innovations to *music*.One example >would be her use of operaic techniques in her music. OK, first of all, this is not a flame. I think there is a problem in terminology here, not to mention the possibility that a lot of American popular music may not be readily available in many overseas countries. I know Michael Reggev has lamented the poor availability of our popular music in Israel during his time on the list. :-) I'm going to assume that what you're trying to say is "innovations to American popular music" rather than "music", since opera has been performed and enjoyed internationally for hundreds of years. Operatic techniques? Well, I think I was probably one of the first to post to this list about Jewel's occasional opera quotes during her concerts; presumably music that she learned while at Interlochen, since she has never identified the source. As far as I know, Jewel hasn't recorded any of her arias for CD release, though. If you're referring to her use of extended phrasing, abrupt register change, and extreme high notes (all techniques found in opera) I would have to say that even this is not the case. Yodeling has been a popular form of expression in European folk and American country music (at one time by far the most "popular" American music) for many years; high notes and extended phrasing a hallmark of numerous pop singers. Check out '60s Melanie, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez for some contributions to the folk genre; and the interesting but not-for-everyone Yma Sumac for vocal acrobatics that were positively scary at the time. A little closer to current-day, I would recommend the wonderful voice of Happy Rhodes, with a near-four-octave range and marvelous breath control. None of them completely original (definition 1 :) but all predating Jewel. I know that a number of popular singers from the '30s recorded and released opera-inspired songs (complete with Wagnerian vocal modulation :) during the heyday of radio programming, but I can't name one offhand. Who recorded that amazing "Voice of Spring" with the solo piano accompaniment? >I would even say that >in merely accompanying herself with nothing but a guitar (which, by the >way, she fingers in her unique way) for the most part of a released album >she is breaking new ground and doing something no-one to my recollection >has dared do before. Can't buy this, either, I'm afraid. Looking back to the early days of blues, characterized by such folks as Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, and John Lee Hooker, the only form of live performance available to them was solo acoustic guitar. Hence, their recorded works are almost exclusively solo (Hooker of course, being still alive, has recorded a lot of electric music with bands). Check out Johnson's amazing fingerstyle and slide technique for something I would say ws highly innovative in his day. Of course, the country stars of the '40s and '50s, including Hank Sr. and even Les Paul, are remembered for their fingerpicking-accompanied vocal work. And what would the folk era of the '60s have been without people like Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, who performed and recorded solo albums on numerous occasions? Again, I do not intend to slight Jewel's amazing music in any way. Her contributions to music IMHO can't be easily measured or isolated. The emotion, intelligence and beauty she evokes with her music is why I'm on this list and have met so many wonderful people. I just don't want to see Jewel canonized for contributions she hasn't made -- yet. :-) Her work stands on its own as highly evocative and beautiful. OK, enough out of me. Sorry to be so long-winded; I'll crawl back into my hole and wait for more Jewel concert reports to come into my mailbox. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | | | gregdunn@indy.net | "Who is Number One?" | | GregDunn@aol.com | | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Patrick McGoohan | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 21:43:51 EST From: trujillo@netwrx.net Subject: Poem/song Here's another poem. The whole album has a unified tone and sound that's perfect for those times of contemplation ("staring a hole in his scrambled eggs") -- especially in the washed out late fall days of Canada's backwoods. Joni is another great artist, along with Neil Young, Bobby Dylan and others who seem to be popular with Jewel fans. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 22:56:12 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: How about a Pacific Northwest EDA gathering with Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel?!! This is ground control to Major Tom -- or at least to all EDAs in the Pacific Northwest. That means you, Phil, on the big island (Vancouver Island) and all EDAs in Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle and maybe even Portland and anywhere that people find themselves in these parts. Maybe Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel would extend their Living Room Tour this far north if enough Angels got together. I live on Salt Spring Island -- it's off the Pacific Coast between Vancouver and Seattle and Vancouver Island. You get here by taking a ferry boat from Vancouver, Canada or Anacortes, Washington (to one of the San Juan Islands then connect to Canada) or from Vancouver Island. Salt Spring is home to Tara McLean (she was discovered singing on a ferry), bald eagles, deer, raccoons, frogs, snakes, quail, sheep, pigs etc. etc. I live on farmland with a horse and a cow and my cat. This would be a special place for a Northwest EDA gathering and a Living Room concert. (If people want to come from California, Florida or anywhere else, too, that's cool.) My place isn't big but it'd sleep ten or so (forget the privacy) and there's room to pitch tents on the land. For the performers, and anyone else that wants luxury there are cool cabins for rent on the islands lakes or on pastoral lands. There's relaxing, kayaking, hiking, lake swimming and fishing, beaches, ocean swimming, and depending on the exact season there's often seals and seal lions off-shore and sometimes you can watch the whales too. I'd have to check my work schedule to arrange things, and talk with the folks next door and, especially, Delores (my cat) but thought I'd throw out the idea. It's truly a beautiful place here -- I'm going to e-mail Bart, the Living Room Tour coordinator to see if this is possible. Since it's an island and takes hours to sail here, people usually want to stay at least a couple of days to appreciate the peace and nature after the travel. Even the ferry rides are glorious. Any interest?! EDAs from anywhere, together maybe we can hear Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel in an island living room. SSEEEEEEEEEEEE, she can't be ALL bad right? :) 4) I also caught Sarah McLachlan, Suzanne Vega and Jewel's "call-in" on Modern Rock live. i stopped listening after jewel though. I thought it was funny that she called from a payphone... laugh... Noticed they played the New Foolish Games, good way to get some advanced promotion for the single, i guess. 5) Saw something on the gossip show about Renee Zellweger and Jewel backstage at the MTV movie awards. The lady said they kind of stood there for a minute looking each other over and then just burst out laughing and giggling. She says they supposedly became instantly bonded and even exchanged phone numbers and Renee plans on coming down to San Diego to hang out with Jewel at her house. and that's it, i think........... all those happened today cept for number 1... sheeeeeeeeeeeesh. I just had a fulla jewel day... :) - --Lisa My friend of 2 years, Ralph, passed away yesterday due to heart problems that he's had for many years.
