Come on give the guy a little break it's not his fault. It's the media, they always announce him as the next Bob Dylan or the son of Bob Dylan, but I think Jakob gets annoyed by this fact. And then how long will they make you wait for all the great songs that she wrote last year and this year and next year? Will the third album be out by the year 2000? Someone as prolific as Jewel, with 200+ songs in her repotoire, could easily put out an album every year. Why not? Because the record company doesn't want to. Labels "as big as Atlantic" push any artist that they think they can make a buck on. It's called Business, with a capital "B". Buy low, sell high. Watch your bottom line. What are your quarterly earnings? What's the return on investment? How much of a bonus will I get this year? It's got nothing to do with creative expression, except as a product to sell. How many units have we moved? Blah, blah, blah. And so two years after it was recorded, we'll hear Jewel's second album. And the bean counters count away while the tapes sit in a vault in LA. However, there was a point made by someone (I think it was Roy?) that is completely erroneous as far as I know. The statement was: - ------------------------------------------------------------------ =A0"Oh, and one more thing before I get off my soap box. Imagine that you are in a smoky little New York club in the 60's and there is Bob "musical-social-political-philisophical-anti-establishment-blah-blah revolutionary" Dylan singing his famous protest song "The Times they are a Changin'". At the end of it, you stand up and say "Excuse me, Mr.Dylan, but what would you say if I told you that in 30 years you would sell that to the Bank of Montreal to be used as their theme song?" Well, he did it kids! Sad but true :( He lost a lot of credibility - I mean, do you think he was *that* desperate for money? I'm sure Jewel would sooner move back into her VW van :)" - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There's a misconception here that's very widespread that I'd like to clear up. Bob Dylan did NOT sell that song to the Bank of Montreal, because he didn't own it in the first place. The publishing company which owns the rights to that song sold it. As far as I know, Dylan himself had no say in the matter, even though he wrote the song. When you talk of 1960's rock stars who have lost credibility because of the betrayal of what we perceived were their values during their 'glory days', such as The Who or the Rolling Stones, I think Dylan is the last person to be included on that list. He has held on to his integrity more than anyone could possibly have expected from any human being in his positon. He's done virtually no advertisements, has toured relentlessly without tour sponsorship, and has essentially ignored all musical trends and attempts at commercial popularity...preferring instead to pursue his own musical vision (albeit, not always successfully). I could be wrong, but that's my understanding of the situation. As for Jewel and Dylan comparisons, I agree with everyone who praised Adrian Duplessis' excellent post. There is one point he made, however, I would disagree with partially. Adrian said (I'm paraphrasing) that Dylan used his head to articulate his philosophy in song, while Jewel's approach is from the heart. While this is true, there are many artists who write from the heart. What distinguishes Jewel (for me) is that she also writes from another place that few people do: from her soul. It's this sense of spiritual philosophy, as home-spun as it often is, that perhaps plants visions of a genuinely Dylanesque career in our minds, even though we know it's wildly premature to speculate on such things. To try to move people towards any sense of spirituality in this day and age is one of the courageous qualities of Jewel's that I most respect. It's also a burden that few people could bear for long. (Hi there, Bono....) We'll have to see how far Ms. Kilcher can take it. When Buce Springsteen introduced Dylan during the induction ceremony at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (what a bizarre concept), he said something like "What Elvis did to free our bodies, Bob Dylan did for our heads."=A0=A0 I can't help but wonder if the day will come when Jewel wil= l be introduced at some such ceremony as the woman who helped free our souls.=A0 If so, she has a LOT of work cut out for her. All I know for sure is that she has a very long way to go, but she's off to a great start. Have a nice evening everyone. I thought Unplugged was for bands that > were normally electrical bands... Jewel is Always unplugged... That's what I'm always saying! How more unplugged could she get, she spent two years with just her and an acoustic guitar! AS far as i'm consered, its just a concert! DO NOT GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE> I WARN YOU.it gets half a star and thats it.n stay away i implore you. babbling angel, CJ "I'm torn between my loyalty to the boss and my desire to piss with the lights on" - Clerks ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 11:05:08 -0400 From: wdb@obl.bidmc.harvard.edu (William D. Bartholomew) Subject: die hard fans - don't read this! i heard fg on the radio this morning (boston) and at the very end, the dj came in with this loud obnoxious snoring sound. the female dj said it was a beautiful song (yay), but the guy was saying how it was too long and boring. then they talked to the traffic guy and he said he fell asleep at the wheel hearing it. hah!. then they took a call and the first person who got through (female) said "this song sucks!" "don't ever play it again, it's dumb!" so the male dj said he was removing it from the playlists in the future, as the other dj implored him to get a grip. i'm sure it'll stay on the station, after all, these top 40 stations wouldn't survive without another contemporary artist's next hit to overplay to death. trust me though, i was merely surfing the stations to find one without a stupid morning show. and what do my wandering ears come across...foolish games at 7am! fantastic way to start the day. if only the dj's weren't morons. by the way, tara's performance tuesday in cambridge was amazing as usual. that was my fifth time in just over a month seeing her and bill bell. bill said after the show that this was their best performance in the last three months. i actually thought the first time they played kendall cafe was the best i've seen. but that's his opinion. i can only imagine what the performance would be like if tara didn't have pms next time through boston. ;) hey albert, chris, tell me about wednesday night!!! i'm dyin' here. there's no way i could have gone anyway, i was at the lab until 11pm. waaahh. and i want my damn tapes back chris. need to hear the tuesday show bad! bye all, have great weekends (well, each of you have *a* great weekend...individually. not multiple great weekends. that's not cosmically possible...without the aid of narcotics at least...and we don't promote their use here on the list, do we? i didn't think so). I know that there are some people on the list who know quite a bit about tapes and dubbing and I was wondering... are the Sony CD-IT tapes as good for dubbing from cds as the Maxwell XLII? They're both "position ll" it's just that the sonys have a more convinient running time for me. It's probably just a 'hiccup' in the internet system....When I came into work this morning, I had over 100+ new messages, and the first 50 or so of them were duplicates....and the post that I sent yesterday at 9am finally went through sometime early today, but it showed up in my mailbox 3 times....This is probably just a one-time thing, because I've never seen it happen on here before. Why not let her actually shoot the >video first before deeming it 'cheesy'? > Sinjin I agree with Sinjin. Who knows? The video might be fantastic!!! In fact, I bet it will be. I'm grateful for everything that allows Jewel to express herself and reach more people. People all over the world need her message of hope and optimism. I celebrate Jewel's expressing herself in each and every form she chooses, whether it's re-edited songs, new version of videos, movie soundtracks, or the Wizard of Oz. Personally, I'll be the first on line (if I get their early enough), when she stars in her first movie or Broadway play. Think of all the people around the world who haven't even heard her yet and the joy, that we all know so well, that's about to come into their lives. What's so exciting to me is to see how incredible her first "time capsule" record PoY is and then hear tapes like Jewelstock which indicate such a promise for the future. PoY has put her on virtually every talk show and magazine cover. Imagine the response when the world finally gets to hear "Carnivore", 1000 Miles Away", "Don't", "Sometimes It Be That Way" and "Last Dance Rodeo"! The best is yet to come!!!
