Well, it's a very complex issue and, since it deals with gender, it's a can of worms but since you opened it, I'll stick my neck out. Oh boy! I can feel the flames already. Hey bob! Pass the SPF 90 and the Hooks(tm) brand fireproof suit... I've thought a lot about this whole subject ever since Alanis burst on the scene with "Jagged Little Pill" and set the record for the largest selling album in history by a female artist with 16 million sales and still counting. Then, came the ascendancy of Joan Osborne, Jewel, Paula Cole, Poe, Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan, Ani DiFranco, Tara MacLean, Shawn Colvin, Patti Griffin and Merrideth Brooks (to mention just a few) join the ranks of Mellisa Etheridge, Bjork, Tracy Chapman, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos and, the original Angel, Emmy Lou Harris. I've watched the music scene since the sixties, when women artists were few and far between; a definite minority in a male dominated music world. Back then there was Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Laura Nyro and that's about it. As far as I'm concerned, the current proiferation of women artists is one of the healthiest signs I've seen these days that the imbalances in society are somehow being corrected. Personally, I'm tired of hearing old retreads of testosterone rock. Let the pendulum swing the other way. We could use more people singing, "I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way". Last year, I took my 12 year old cousin Shana to see Alanis when she performed at the World Music Theater in Chicago. It was the second most exciting concert that I've ever seen, second only to seeing the Beatles perform at Shea Stadium during their first US tour. Actually, the Alanis concert was better...you could hear her perfectly whereas the Beatles were practically inaudible, due to the screaming crowds. What impressed me the most about the Alanis concert was how practically everyone in the audience (including myself) sang every word of every song. Shana's throat was so sore, from singing at the top of her lungs, that she couldn't talk for three hours. The entire concert was one mass singalong! The audience was about 60-70% female and I felt a amazing amount of spiritual solidarity amongst them. Compared to the Beatles, which was more of an episode of mass hysteria, at Alanis' concert the audience was relating to the meaning of the lyrics and hung on every word and phrase. Alanis has obviously connected with a huge audience like few have in pop music. So, at the risk of sounding utopiam, I think the explosion (or should I say "blossoming" ;-) of women artists in the world today is a sign of humanity evolving toward a healthier balance between the sexes. [SNIP] i agree with bob about atlantic' impact upon Jewel on all of these points. one of the problems with the music industry is that many of the people who sign emerging artists to the labels do not always stay with that label. this point is best illustrated with an example. Jenny Price signed Jewel to Atlantic. Now Jenny Price is no longer working for Atlantic, she works for Mercury. it seems to me that there is no one "in Jewel's corner" at Atlantic. Jenny could've promised Jewel unlimited creative control, but once Jenny left the situation changed. i am pretty sure that Jenny's move to Mercury changed the way Jewel's career was being handled by Atlantic. Jenny Price has been trying to sign Dar Williams to Mercury, but Dar has refused to sign with a major label because she knows that she'll lose the creative control she now has. Dar is on an indie label, Razor and Tie. she basically has unlimited creative control. > In the past, some have posited that Atlantic is the best thing to happen > to her jewel's alliance with atlantic is a double-edged sword i've heard (but i don't know if it's true) that atlantic signed Jewel to a 6 album deal from the beginning because they saw so much profit potential i'll stop ranting now :) peace, dave *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Dave DiCicco peaches@dmapub.dma.org *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jun 1997 16:29:18 -0700 From: smithr@agcs.com Subject: Question for you all.. Well, it seems to be my chance to chime in. I have always preferred female singers to male singers, with a couple of exceptions (Phil Collins, Martin Page). When I was in High School, I used to get teased a lot about liking female artists. Even though my favorites then are different from my favorites now, to me it is the voice over the music. I generally do not like music where the music itself drowns out the human voice. When it comes to people like Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Natalie Merchant, and Milla, voice is the key. I don't want to listen to the music if I can't stand the voice, and what's the point of lyrics if you can't understand them. It just seems to me that the female artists are less likely to have music which drowns them out. Well, I'm just rambling here, but at least I've finally gotten this off my chest. JcL - -- Justin C. Most guys, with the exception of maybe James Taylor, have songs obviously filled with testerone and are usually loud. I just concocted this little poem about half an hour ago...i couldn't resist posting it...i'd like some input if you all wouldn't mind!? ;) here it goes: Nothing/Everything/Something Is it sad to be the space between raindrops? Do they miss out on a lot? I don't really think so. Someone has to channel the thunder Something has to carry the lightning on its back Somewhere ahs to spared the onslaught of the droplets Somehow we have to see doves flying on air-pockets of grace or not notice the crows and ravens bombarding victims Is it lonely to be the space between raindrops? Is it an uneventful existence? I don't really think so. Right two doors over will be a space like you You can see straight throught the empty droplet, Didn't you know, didn't anyone tell you? The artists you're talking about usualy don't have alot of material (or talent!) and then have to rely on other songwriters, which leads to less coherent albums, which.. well, you can begin to see where it goes (straight to the $4.99 bargin CD bin!) - -Jeffrey- PS - sorry for the long quote, but it seemed relevant ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jun 1997 08:53:47 -0400 From: Brian Subject: NJC: A poem of mine.. Ok.. I noticed a few poems being posted here so I thought i would share one of my own.. I'm not sure if it's any good or what but I enjoy it. Hopefully you will also.. - -Untittled- i alone could see the loss, she wore with such degnity. silver hair framing her face, she thought to hide from us all. as tears slide like rivers of blood, and collect at her tired feet. a sea of unforseen pain, that numbs her mind to loss. yet i know her thoughts, so easy to read in her eyes. a book open for eternity, it's pages brittle and worn. it's end unknown to me, like so many others on this world. i shall morn the loss, her story so like my own. .. Brian Smith 05/02/97 .. Hmm.. here's one more. -Lost- i am sitting here, just thinking thoughts, of such lonely depths. I swallow my soul, one bitter bite at a time, till nothing is left, except a withered shrowd. grasping at the day's, when love held sway, yet I find nothing, tear's falling through my fingers. in silence I remain, remembering your face, though faded even in my memories, it's what keep's me alive, if life this could be called. .. There haven't been many RSVP's so this list may be only 50% accurate. But it should give everyone an idea of who will be there. We will have an RV decorated in blue ribbons with a couple of blue flags on the roof so everyone will be able to find it when they arrive. Farr is providing the RV as well as the food and drinks with the help of anyone who would like to contribute. If anyone plans on using the EDA RV for shelter, food, and/or drinks, please try to give Farr some money to help cover the costs of everything. We'll have restrooms, A/C, plenty of food and drinks, and a place to sleep (limited) for those of you wishing to sleep in the RV. We all want this to be not only a great concert, but a great EDA gathering as well. A breakfast is tentatively planned for 9:00 Sunday morning at possibly a local IHOP, but all the details will be worked out at the gathering. Angela and myself plan on arriving early Friday, around noon-1:00 so if any others are planning on getting there early, we'll look for you, and vice-versa. Once Farr is there (2:00-3:00), then everyone can just look for the RV covered in blue ribbons....the only one there like that! :-) Camping will be *inside* of the speedway, BUT as far as we know, the tailgate party events will take place *outside* of the speedway. There are a few things we're not sure about, but will do our best to work things out once we're there. Blockbuster has 99% finalized the line-up of bands and the schedule of performances. They are the following: (The order in which the bands will play will be posted at Rockfest and all times are subject to change) Friday - tailgate party 6:00pm - 12:00am The Nixons, Duncan Sheik, Camus, and 10,000 Maniacs This stage will be outside of the speedway and there is no ticket needed to see these bands play! Parking is *free* as well, but only for Friday night! Saturday - Main stage: 10:00am - 1:00pm Souls, Sugar Ray, Soak, and Third Eye Blind 2:00pm - ??? Jewel, No Doubt, Bush, The Wallflowers, Counting Crows, Collective Soul, Paula Cole, and Matchbox 20 On a second stage IN the speedway on Saturday the following bands will be performing....maybe while the stage sets are being changed for the headliners.... Jackopierce, Sister 7, and Almighty Ultrasound WOW!!! What a line-up of bands! Here's a checklist for anyone to use as a reminder before leaving for Rockfest......
