Afterwards, I was thinking about how, in comparison to Jewel, most other artists these days appear one dimensional. I don't mean this as a put down of Merrideth, or anyone else. Actually, I kinda like her song and there's plenty of room for all types of music, as we've discussed before on the list. But, lately, almost everybody I see on TV or hear on the radio bores me and seems to be retreads of tired out formula pop music, without heart and soul. What I'm interested in is the fact that Jewel seems to have raised the bar to a new level. Perhaps it's her song writing ability, her awesome vocal range or her profoundly philosophical inclinations. I'd be interested in hearing what other Angels think about this. What is it that sets Jewel apart and makes her so special to you? To stimulate conversation, I'll throw out a tidbit that I picked up while listening to a tape of Bob Dylan being interviewed on WNEW-FM in New York, in 1984. As most of you know, Jewel frequently mentions Dylan (especially the nose-tweeking incident) and her respect for his talent is quite evident. In the above mentioned interview, Dylan said...and I paraphrase...that he's been waiting for someone to come along and take what he's done (as a singer/songwriter) to a new level. He said, that it's not egotism on his part but that he honestly hasn't seen anyone yet (as of 1984) who has gone farther than he has. He said that, before he dies, he'd like to see someone come along who is doing that. This is especially poignant, considering Dylan's recent health scare and hospitalisation. As has been stated before on this list, Bob Dylan is widely considered to be the most influential signer/songwriter of the last thirty years and music critics consistently place his song "Like A Rolling Stone" at the top of the list of greatest rock songs of all time. My hunch is that if anyone can take it to a higher level, it's Jewel. "Pieces of You" although a dated "time capsule" as admitted by Jewel herself, demonstrates the amazing potential that she possesses. As EDA's already know from Jewelstock and the other tapes that we have access to, her next album is going to blow the socks off the music world. I for one can't wait for the rest of the world to discover what we already know. Any ideas on any of this? I know that it is copyrighted and all so legally I'm not supposed to be dubbing it but I just wanted to let you guys know that it is sure NOT "commercially available" anywhere within a 200 mile radius of me or else I would have bought ten thousand copies!! :) On another note. Those EDAs who are officially on my waiting list to receive tapes will still get their tapes but I am closing my waiting list to anymore requests for the tape that I offerred to dub. I know some of you have received some info but have not confirmed yet--I will give you until Friday to do so. Some of you may be wondering why I am not accepting anymore requests. Well, I can only listen to the same tape soooo many times! :) I've been dubbing at least 2 tapes a day for the last 2 and a half months! I need to listen to another tape! :) Hehe, the good news is that after Friday I will offer to dub a different Jewel tape :) I haven't decided on which one yet...If any of you have any suggestions please let me know. Take care my angels -- Mary wannabe angel :) "In the end only kindness matters" ~Jewel P.S. That is, I find the structure suits happy subject matter best. (Then there's Poe, but I digress.) This poem however, did not make me happy. And that's a good thing, considering the subject matter. It wasn't so obscure as to lose meaning. Yet it wasn't so obvious as to grow tired by the end. The imagery is plentiful but the adjectives need a little work. A thesaurus could make this piece shine. Overall, it's good piece written in a difficult structure. If I may take a wild stab in the dark, was this inspired at all by "The Tori Comment" from a while back? She has a couple of pre-requisites already going for her: she has a wonderful talent for writing songs (duh!), she has sufficient public acceptance for her to be recognized upon achieving this goal. If anyone can do it, it's our angel. Though I think she'll have a bit of difficulty gaining EVERYONE'S respect because of her looks. It's a shame really, but then could people so superficial really enjoy her music even if they didn't know that she was so young and attractive? Dylan was lucky in that his looks never got in the way. Like I've said previously, physical beauty is a curse when you're trying to be a "legitimate artist". But in EDA fashion, I shall say that Jewel can and will overcome these obstacles to rise to the level of immortals like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell. Especially the part about, "Jewel appeals to people is b/c of her fresh outlook on the world" and "she's shown the music world a positive outlook on people, whereas usually we are only told about the bad things". That's something that stands out for me too. It seems that one of the traditions that pop music has inherited is the "angry young man" tone that dominated rock when it was dominated by angry young men. :-) Even Dylan, when he was young, seemed to fit that mould of the bitter young man railing against the injustices of the world. Whereas, Jewel, while commenting on social problems, offers a messasge of hope and inspiration that is rare in these times when it's hip to be cynical. In fact I think she's already done it. The "looks" issue plays both ways. Certainly MTV and VH1 are eager to play videos by an "attractive performer" who is so telegenic. What you said, "physical beauty is a curse when you're trying to be a legitimate artist", may not have to be true. Maybe she's lucky to have that crooked tooth. :-) Kris _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ "Everything is holy! everybody's holy! everywhere is holy! everyday is in eternity! Hi all, Listen I got this a few days ago: ================================= NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--June 12, 1997--Acclaimed singer & songwriter Sarah McLachlan is set to release her new album entitled Surfacing (Nettwerk/Arista) on July 15. {...snip...} McLachlan has also spearheaded the much-anticipated Lilith Fair Tour which begins July 5 at The Gorge in George, Washington and continues on through the end of August. Lilith Fair showcases well-known and up & coming female artists: Sarah (on all dates), and a rotating line-up which will include Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Jewel, Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega, Cardigans, Joan Osborne, Tracy Chapman, Lisa Loeb, Paula Cole, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Bonham, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, Meredith Brooks, Fiona Apple, and more. Lilith Fair was heralded by Time magazine as "one of the most exciting musical events" of the summer. ================================= What I wanted you to notice was that Meredith Brooks was included in the line-up. Also, 104 KRBE in Houston, TX (a station that is a long time supporter of Sarah) in their radio ads for the Houston Lilith almost always mention Meredith as a performer. But, I've check and can find no mention of her any where. So, I thought maybe you guys could help. Poetry is something both enjoyable to read and write. I would like to share with everyone a poem I wrote that got published in "Essence of a Dream". It is a full length work with thousands of amateur poetry that got published by entering The National Library of Poetry contest. "Essence of a Dream" should be underlined since it is a full length work, but I do not see an underlining tool anywhere in this e-mail thing. So, to end the suspense, here is my poem: Gazing at a darkened night I can see him in the shadows The silhouette of his body As it strides along the drive I race out to embrace him But feel only the breeze I search the silent streets Empty E-mail me at Image888@aol.com to let me know what you think Thanks A Fellow EDA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 12:41:20 -0400 (EDT) From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB-Last call for Jewel Tour Books Hi all, I just want to thank all of you that purchased the Tiny Lights Tour Booklets via the authorized EDA list sales.
