I can't do anywhere near as thorough or clear a post as Mike Connell already has, but I can add my voice of concern to those already raised. This list, and its circulation of Angelfood -- tapes of non-commercial recordings that have been given the blessing of Jewel for sharing amongst EDAs -- is a very special and unique arrangement. We are all very lucky and I know that no one would intentionally try and disrupt the spirit of things. But bootlegs are the antithesis of Angelfood and they hurt our EDA community as well as Jewel. Over time, EDAs will find they can get what they need from other EDAs they befriend here. Please, anyone thinking about supporting the practices of bootleggers -- don't. When it comes to Jewel there's NO reason to do so, and plenty of very good reasons not to... Let's not blow something precious. On another note -- thanks Chris and other European EDAs for all the great spotting and posting of Jewel news in other countries. The MOJO article reminded me of some great artists Jewel likes that are favourites of mine - -- with influences from Nina Simone and Ella to Puccini and the Replacements how can things not be beautiful? I'm not trying to start a debate, I'd just like to know the real story. I probably won't argue with the girl anyway because we're both set in our opinions, but I'm curious as to what she thought Jewel said. Jewel has always struck me as being very generous and modest, and nothing I hear except from her will change that. And not to change my own subject, but I had the strangest dream last Friday. I was at a Jewel concert, but she sang on a gazebo-type stage (but not like for the MOM CD). After the concert, everyone rushed up but Jewel wasn't there. Remembering the tools I had picked up from reading people's real encounters, I went around back and saw Jewel sneaking off behind a building. She didn't stop for me until I yelled "I'm an EveryDay Angel." Then she stopped, we hugged, and I asked her what she thought of this list. I don't remember what she said. Then I asked for her autograph for a friend, and she gave it to me. I think I asked for her another one for a different friend, but you know how dreams are. You can't really remember them once you wake up. So I met Jewel, sorta. I don't pretend to have written truly great lyrics, poetry or prose, but to say you must always follow one formula is rather close-minded. _____________________________________________________ Okay, I agree, poetry and art should not be by form or rules. They tried that in the neo-classical times and an artistic revolution followed called the Romantic Period, my favorite period of lit. They tried rules again with Ruskin and all his Victorian cohorts. And instead of "sweetness and light" (Matthew Arnold, I think), we got the sordid descriptions of the 20th Century. I think it's interesting to note that both times that people tried to rule literature, the backlash came as an increase in sensory description and detail. For the Romantics, nature. For the 20th century, the realities of city life. ________________________________________________________________ You continue: In my mind, truly great poems are judged by the feelings they generate, or messages they get across. _________________________________________________________________ Again, I agree. But have you ever noticed that poems that evoke the most feelings are those that are rich in concrete detail? Where we say, yes, I can see that. For example, Jewel's two songs that touch me the most are Morning Song and 1,000 Miles away, both of which are primarily sensory images. (she doesn't say, "I feel really tired, and depressed, and maybe even sick or envious" she says, "I feel like my car, a little run-down, a little bit up, maybe just a little bit green" and we know how she feels, and when we hear our engines sputter and cough and we're depressed we empathize completely). __________________________________________________________________ Your words again: Toooften people think that poems must be abstact. In the same way, don't say they have to be ambiguous. Very often the greatest writers say things directly. They do this when abstraction or metaphor would become superflous. No, that's not quite right. They do it when anything else would be bullshit. _________________________________________________________________ Me again: I think "superfluous" is the key word. When description and detail comes to the point of cliche, just say it like it was originally said. "I'm sad," words we rarely hear outright nowadays, can look a lot starker than the now common, "I feel like shit". But a whole mess of I felt scareds, and sads, and happys, and really happys is not going to separate a person or his (note, I'm using masculine to embrace the feminine for my convenience, please don't flame, feminists) poetry the Joe Man of the People. __________________________________________________________________ You again: Look at "The Death of the Hired Man" or "Andrea del Sarto". Both tell you what is going on very directly. You have to balance all the techniques and all the feelings and write what flows, what feels natural. _________________________________________________________________ Yes, balance is key. Henry Miller has to be the most descriptive writer I have read. He can even make urinals beautiful. Yet he had a nice three word sentence buried in description: I was tired. But he followed it up with a great line, "It takes more concentration to find a missing comma than to epitomize Nietzche's philosphy". As for the advice Nathan gave, I think he's noticing something that is a problem for most beginning writers. They never strike that balance. They do so much more telling than showing. And if they're going to evoke feelings, they can't constantly tell us what those feelings are. If we're told what to feel, we won't. If we're allowed to just respond, we'll feel with greater depth than any "I'm sads" can give. Imagine if you had hiked up a mountain to see a waterfall, and as it churned and rainbows rested on rocks, someone broke the silence to say, "I am in awe. Look at that, isn't it beautiful?" Even if in the most breathless voice, the splendor of the moment, which would be much better adorned by silence, would be lost. ___________________________________________________________________ Unless, of course you want to make your reader pause. Does anyone understand what I'm saying? Because I don't. ___________________________________________________________________ Sort of. ___________________________________________________________________ I'll stop ranting now... Josh ___________________________________________________________________ And so will I. Excuse me, but since this is about poetry, i couldn't resist the urge to throw my two pennies in. Poetry is the ability to cry without having eyes, to laugh without lungs, and to feel rage, without a single damn thing around you. And most of all, poetry is written for the writer and those he wants to share with. But this is just my opinion! ;) - -- =========================================================================== "For those of you who think there is no point, next time you breathe in fresh air, try not taking it for granted, and thank whatever it is that you believe in, even if it is nothing." - Jonders (an everydayangel recovering from broken wings) http://remus.rutgers.edu/~jonders ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 00:52:04 -0400 (EDT) From: "Timothy Paul Mccormick Jr" Subject: YWMFM Promo ???? I kind of thought you were being sarcastic, especially when you said Yoko Ono. That was hilarious. I mainly posted to the person who started this thread about everyone looking like Jewel. I was amazed. Sorry, if I came across rude. I really wasn't trying to... I know that it was released in October of 1996, but I never got the chance to buy it and I'd like a copy now. So if anyone knows, can you please e-mail me at romarch@juno.com?
