If you want me to try to get you this cd, e-mail me at MikeMK@aol.com and put "MK DDDelight" in the subject. It costs $30 plus s&h, I know it's expensive, but I don't think I can get it cheaper unless one of these two guys can order them in bulk, which I doubt. The songs are as follows: [these are from the Paradise show, Boston, MA 8/96] Last Night (Tracey Chapman) Want to be near you (NYA) Daddy Sometimes it be that way YWMFM Carnivor Racecar Driver WWSYS [these are from the Christmas broadcast KROQ 12/14/96] NYA Hollywood (also Satellite) Foolish Games (a version I really like, but, then again, FG has been my favorite song forever) "Yodel Ditti" [Live @ interchange coffeehouse] Sensitive Flower [off of Save the Linoleum] God's gift to women [Farm Aid 96] I'm fading Angels 18 in all. Now, I am not trying to sell this cd at all. I am just a college student who has run across a few copies of it. We have been asked by Jewel herself not to traffic in them or promote them, even by mentioning them. I am surprised this post got through, since there was supposedly a ban on all references to illegal CD's. You are paying people to steal not only Jewel's work and property, but that of many other artists and participants. Even the photos used on these CD's are often stolen from magazines. Alaskan-born of Swiss parents, the effortlessly poised Jewel Kilcher took her guitar and folky, poetic songs to California, where she sang her way into the hearts of coffee-house audiences. And, soon enough, the somewhat harder hearts of A&R types. WHY SHELL OUT ON HER? Do anything but buy it and you'll miss the liner notes' extra poems, and album credits proclaiming industry heavyweight Danny Goldberg "the most soulful daddy-o in the business". "I approach the business by always trying to call out of someone the highest in themselves. It's just a matter of engaging people in a good way instead of a bad way", opines Jewel, sunnily. SO WHAT'S SO DIFFERENT THEN? Michelle Shocked with a clothing allowance, if you're a cynic. Radiant, clear-eyed optimism, "Friends"-friendly looks and an effortless vocal range, if you're not. "I find people fascinating," Jewel exclaims unblushingley. "I love people. I *like* us. I think it's fascinating to see businessmen walking like cripples in their business suits, old women that giggle with their long grey hair. I love every F***ed up and beautiful thing about us." BEST ENJOYED...? Whenever you're wondering "Who Will Save Your Soul?" (the latest in Jewel's impressive string of US hits.) That's only on a metaphorical level: "I don't have any particular religion. It really has a great groove that so few albums catch with studio musicians. I love that sound; it just feels so right. What was the first record you bought, and where did you buy it? - --------------------------------------------------------------- Pink Floyd, thinking it was The Pink Panther - I didn't read well when I was about four or five. I really loved Nina Simone but over everybody, Ella Fitzgerald - not so much her life, but definitely her voice. What do you sing in the shower? - ------------------------------- Opera music. I love Puccini. And a lot of baroque stuff - I love Monteverdi. And Aaron Copland lullabies, like All The Blue Horses, are very pretty. What is your favourite Saturday night record? - --------------------------------------------- Something very quiet. Last Saturday at the Blue Shamrock in Ireland I heard some beautiful traditional guitar and penny flute. And your favourite Sunday morning record? - ----------------------------------------- Cello concertos - Elgar's played by Jacqueline Du Pre is beautiful. And Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. And Pleased To Meet Me by The Replacements is great on both Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. Leo Kottke I like too. I love his voice; it's very comical. I don't mean to flame or anything, but I get a little sick of everyone's opinion on "what makes the great ones great". I don't pretend to have written truly great lyrics, poetry or prose, but to say you must always follow one formula is rather close-minded. In my mind, truly great poems are judged by the feelings they generate, or messages they get across. Too often people think that poems must be abstact. In the same way, don't say they have to be ambiguous. Very often the greatest writers say things directly. They do this when abstraction or metaphor would become superflous. No, that's not quite right. They do it when anything else would be bullshit. Look at "The Death of the Hired Man" or "Andrea del Sarto". Both tell you what is going on very directly. You have to balance all the techniques and all the feelings and write what flows, what feels natural. Unless, of course you want to make your reader pause. Does anyone understand what I'm saying? The "underground"= cd >store by my college is trying to get more in, and I have a guy in TN who is >also trying to get as many in as possible. I could maybe take a few= orders. {snip}=20 MikeMK, I know you are relatively new and this topic has not been covered= recently, so this Email to you and the rest of the recently subscribed is= intented as an education in OFFICIAL list policy. I have talked with Jeff= Wasilko (the list owner) in person and on the phone about this a few times= and I well know his policy on this matter. He has given me permission to= 'discuss' situations like this in accordance with his policies. "DDDelght" is an illegal bootleg CD. (So are "Salvation" & "When You Smile")= Plain and simple it is against the law to distribute these items. Jeff does= NOT want these items even discussed on this list, not to mention offering= to "pick up a few" for others. Buying these CDs are wrong. The reasons are= simple and many: 1) They are, as I said illegal 2) Jewel and Lenedra are against them. Lenedra has told this to me and= others too, even mentioned the topic herself in a post to the list last= July. I will quote his post on this below, but Jeff once said in an Email= on this matter "I also have to consider our moral and legal obligations to= Jewel." Moral you may ask. Yes. Jewel and Lenedra have on numerous occasions= supplied the list with high quality material to 'tree' (distribute) on this= list to its' members. Last summer they gave us JewelStock, a private= concert for members of this list. (Think about that:) They continually feed= advance notice & information to the list so that we can have the info long= before the rest of the music listening world knows of things: such as TV= appearances, tour dates, Jewel's poetry book (not out yet) and a whole lot= more. Considering our longstanding relationship we have with them and= others in Jewel's organization, and the fact that it is illegal (reason= enough) it is wrong to actively allow anyone to help distribute this= material using this list as a communication tool. Besides, if the EDAs or a= group of them begin to condone the purchase of these bootleg CDs, we stand= to lose the relationship/connection we have with Jewel and her management.= That is something I'm sure none of us want to happen.=20 3) Jeff doesn't want to see the bootleg manufacturers making money even= indirectly through his list. While I'm on the subject he doesn't want to= see anyone using this list as a *selling or buying* tool for anything,= other than for making availabe Jewel *merchandise* (NOT music) at cost plus= shipping. Another point on this. I know it's not the easiest thing to do to get= Angelfood (*authorized* tapes of Jewel music), but if you persevere, you= *will* get it. So far, EVERY bootleg CD that has shown up has had the= *exact same* material (same shows) available on this list on tape trees or= for free trade or dub, AND the material we have was from a better quality= source. So what makes sense here? Spend 30$ on an *illegal* CD from a= LESSER quality source, and risk all this list has built with Jewel and what= this list stands for, or buy a blank tape plus return postage and get a= better sounding tape of the same show?=20 To me it's a no brainer. :) - Mike C ________________________________________ Jeff Wasilko's comments on the subject: Jeff on 12/19/96: So, from this point forward, any discussion of bootlegs (even mentioning the word bootleg) will win you a one-way trip off of the list. I'm serious--mention bootlegs and you're gone. I'm sorry to take such a hard-line about it, but given the past problems we've had with the list I'm not going to sit on the sidelines and watch the list do a death spiral. I also have to consider our moral and legal obligations to Jewel. Mike's Added Note: he has since softened his stand on "one-way trip off the= list" Jeff on 12/19/96: Please allow me to clarify my definition of a bootleg: A bootleg is a _commercial_ copy of a musician's work that is not authorized by the artist or record company.=20 So, it's still ok to talk about trading cassettes of Jewel's performances between yourselves--Jewel has said this is ok (in fact, she has encouraged it). Please don't call them bootlegs, since that generally means 'illegal'. Mike's Added Note: hence the official list term for *authorized* Jewel= tapes: Angelfood :) =20 /\//\\///\\\////\\\\/////\\\\\//////\\\\\\/////\\\\\////\\\\///\\\//\\/\ \ New to the list and confused? So she's most likely in a Honda of some sort. Personally, I would like to imagine her on a tricycle with tassles hanging from the handlebars and playing cards clothes-pinned to the spokes, her blond-hair pulled back in two pigtails tied with yarn ribbon. It's great to be a kid. Hold unto the dreams, the innocence and the make-believe that seems so real. Green" Subject: Angelfood I know I have not submitted a posting before this, but I had to say my bit. I am in complete agreement with Mike Connell. If Jewel is going to be nice enough to allow taping of shows, or Angelfood, as you call it, then why deliberately go against her wishes. This destroys the industry, as well as Jewel's fan base, and only puts money in the pockets of those who must not truely appriciate her music. Having said this, I would like to make an inquiry of obtaining some of these legally tapes shows for myself. I'm new to the list, as I said before, and would be most thankful of any help I could receive. Thanks in advance. -D.J. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 17:32:32 PDT From: "Chenelle Gamblin" Subject: A poem of mine Ok, Well, I heard all you guys chatting away about poets and poems, so I just couldnt resist typing this one to you, I wrote it, so if you have any comments, please feel free to email me at chenelleg@hotmail.com ! Ok, so its a little depressing, but...I feel its a good one. AN OPEN DOOR I sat in the darkness surrounded by gloom, awaiting the terror that had to mean doom. The cage around meant I was soon to be dead, and evil thoughts kept invading my head. I squeezed myself into a tiny ball, and crawl to the corner of the filthy wall. From the black I see a golden light, two eyes shinning, big and bright. They call to me, in a leering voice, to come with them, and make the choice. I cannot stay in the dreaded cell, so I stare at the horror, and bid farewell. One takes a leg, and one takes an arm, they pull me into them, into the swarm. I cry out in pain, and then it just stops, my weakond body is wrapped up in locks. I cannot move, then I see the light, I soar to it, as if taking a flight. I met a man who said I was free, he told me I could live just one dream. I starred at him, as he led, me down a path, was I dead. My eyes were closed, and when I awoke, a woman stood by in a bright red cloak. She took my hand and we walked down the street, my lovely children I had to go meet. I looked at her, "Could this be my wife? The girl of my dreams, the girl of my life?" I knew it was true, as the years carried by, then I thought of the man, way up in the sky. I had lived my dream in the fullest way, so he called me back one bright summer day. I once again saw his face by mine. "What about my family?" I cried. He looked away, then looked right back. "It was all an illusion, as a matter of fact." I closed my eyes, cause I knew what he meant, then I awoke, on hard gray cement. I was back in the cage, where I was before, it was just a dream, of an open door. I hardly think that "Show don't tell" constitutes a formula. It is a tool, not a law of creative writing. I only posted because I was seeing a lot of poetry that was making virtually no attempt at this, not by choice but by ignorance. I remember learning this lesson for the first time and yes, initially it felt like I was being told to go by a formula. But upon trying to write something, keeping this suggestion in mind, I saw an instant maturation and elevation of my writing. Read a little Neruda, Tennyson, Angelou or any other great poet and then tell me that they're all following the same "formula" as you put it. Actually, go and read any great fictional author and you'll find prime examples of this "formula" there too. "Show don't tell" is a tool that connects the writer with the reader's soul directly, virtually bypassing the mind, because sometimes that's the desired effect. Think about it, when you feel something, what fills your perception at that moment? Are you literally thinking in your head "I am happy", or are you experiencing the world around you in a bright and sunny way? I should think that the latter is true. So why write a poem that says nothing more than "I am happy"? You brought up several works that you said had a blunt style about them. This too is a writer's tool. However, you can't rely on it alone just as you can't rely on "Show don't tell" alone. The straightforward style isn't invalid at all and I never said that it was. I merely stated that I was seeing people working with limited tools and I wanted to help. "Show don't tell" is just that, a tool; one that every writer should have at their disposal. I'm sorry that you interpreted my post as an attack on your favorite poems. To all you wonderful angels... I have gotten so many responses about the message I posted the other day--about my friend's house burning down. Thank you all so much for offering your help. I told my dad that there were many angels on the list ready to help in some way, any way at all. As of right now, the family's insurance company is being incredibly generous. They have put them up in a 3 bedroom townhouse, and they told them to go out and purchase anything at all that they might need and to keep the receipts of the purchases. I also talked to my friend, and she said that she's ok as far as clothing goes, because she took a lot with her on their vacation. My father will be talking to them over the next few days, and he will ask them if there is anything else they might need, and he will also tell him that I have some "angels" ready to help them out. When I find out what they need, if they need anything, I will let you all know. Thank you again, your generosity is much appreciated. For now, though, I think our wishes and prayers for them will do. Talk to you all soon!! In the words (I think these are her words!) of Stephanie Kartalopolous, our favorite angel: "I LOVE YOU MADLY!!" Love always, Ali :) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #443 ***************************
