But I don't really > wanna go too into the whole MTV sucks thing, so as for Jewel's > performance. Wow, that's harsh. I actually think the MTV Movie Awards are one of the things that the channel really should be given credit for (along with occasionally airing the best show ever on TV, "My So-Called Life"/ Rock the Vote / The Week in Rock / Unplugged / 120 Minutes). The show was a completely classless event, a definite thumbing the nose at every other awards show out there. Generally, when watching awards shows, I just watch to see who wins, but with MTV, I could care less. I just want to watch and see what happens. And tonight had some fine moments -- David Spade posing with Hanson, Jonathan Lipnicki chastising Mike Myers, Jim Carrey's "I'm Not Bitter" acceptance speech. The show also had some great taste in their winners -- "Scream" was probably the most entertaining movie of last year (notice I said entertaining, not best), Claire Danes did a remarkable job in "Romeo and Juliet", the director of "Swingers", etc. I was thoroughly entertained throughout... though never moreso than during Jewel's amazing performance. I was happy she had the microphone on a stand; her body language was a tad distracting on Letterman. A beautiful rendition, though (again), not as powerful as her performance on the Paradise tape. - -- Mark A. BERRYHILL PROMISES TO DEBUT NEW SONGS

            by George Varga

(too bad I can't send the wonderful photograph, captioned
"Cindy Lee Berryhill -- New musical vistas.")

San Diego Music fans will have two opportunities to hear Cindy Lee Berryhill perform this weekend.

Friday at 9 p.m., the acclaimed singer-songwriter will do a solo concert at Java Joe's in Ocean Beach, 4994 Newport Ave. (619-523-0356).  Saturday at 7 p.m., she will be featured on National Public Radio's "Mountain Stage" program, which airs locally on KPBS 89.5 FM.

Both Performances come on the heels of her recently concluded seven-week U.S. tour.  It included an April 20 show at New York's Knitting Factory, which was aired live on the Internet, and an April 27 show in the West Virginia town of Huntington, where her "Mountain Stage" appearance was recorded.

"It was a really cool lineup," said Berryhill, who shared the "Mountain Stage" stage with John Prine, Alex Chilton, and Jill Sobule.  "At the end of the night, we all did a sing-along on the traditional folk tune 'Oh Death,' which seemed strangely appropriate because Allen Ginsberg had just died."

Best known as a singer who plays guitar, Berryhill plans to debut a slew of new material Java Joe's on which she will play piano -- in a manner.

"I don't have a piano, so I have a toy one, a Schoenhut, that I carry with me," she explained.  "It's meant for little kids to learn their scales, and has two octaves.  I got it at a garage sale in Encinitas, for $16.  I took it on the tour, and it was a hit.  People just gravitated toward it."

People also gravitated toward Berryhill for two related reasons -- fellow Singer-songwriter Jewel and the Internet.

"There's a group of people who are fans of Jewel's and call themselves the EDAs (Everyday Angels), and they have an Internet chat group on which they turn each other on to other artists," Berryhill said.  "And some of them started turning up at my shows on this tour.

"They would relay messages to other EDAs to see me and Elizabeth (Hummel, the San Diego singer-songwriter who accompanied, and sometimes performed with, Berryhill).  By the time we got to Boston, we had a day off, and about 20 EDAs had a party for us where we played at someone's house and they taped it.  I've done  a few similar things before, but I'm not used to this sense of community the EDAs have.  I haven't seen Jewel since I got back, but I'll have to thank her.  'Thanks for your fans!'" - --------------9FB7CC92E98093353867D729-- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 1997 14:50:18 -0500 From: "Jamie L. But what does someone who has no Angelfood (such as me) do when they badly want Angelfood (such as me). 2. I'm going to repeat my past request, as I haven't recieved much help. Before I go to college, I want to write one final article for the newspaper I freelance for. But in order to give Jewel the high quality review that she deserves, I want to talk with her after the show. So, if anyone has any ideas on how to get two all-access passes to the August 5 Lilith Fair in Nashville, TN, I will be forever in their debt. Of course, if anyone has a channel to Nedra, that would be the best way. Thank you, fellow Angels, for your time The Anticipatory Angel Jamie L. She's also in L.A. (well, Santa Monica) next Sunday, on the promenade, at 3 p.m., and at Largo's in L.A.(on Fairfax, across from Canter's), on June 26. Elizabeth Hummel will be at Java Joe's on June 21 -- next Saturday night! Also, try to catch Joy Eden Harrison in San Diego as early and often as you can; she's the artist and sultry crooner who created "Where have You Gone, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean," which many know from "Innerchange Days." Another wonderful performer from the wellspring down there in the lower left-hand corner of the U.S.A. Finally, do not miss the July, 1997 "Interview" magazine article (interview) with Jewel and 'Nedra. The first one is that everyone has to remember email is NOT like having a conversation. Everything that CAN be taken out of context, WILL. A big part of communication is tone of voice and facial expressions. In email, all we have are things like :). I keep on being reminded of this, and I was again the other day. PLEASE make sure that you understand what someone is REALLY saying before you post to the list about it, or flame them. So many things can be cleared up with one simple question... My other quick point is a very disturbing ( at least, to me ) thing that has been going on lately. A lot of people have been posting with subject lines like : ATTENTION ! I NEED HELP ! or SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE, etc... all of these posts manage to freak me out and then piss me off in a matter of seconds. For a long time on the list, these kinds of subject lines were used ONLY IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. Usually you'd only see them if someone was having a very severe personal or life problem, and they were coming to their friends as a last resort. We've had people on this list post because they've been kicked out of their house, or their friend was about to commit suicide , or THEY were about to commit suicide. THIS is an emergency. Needing Angelfood or looking for merchandise is NOT AN EMERGENCY. I don't know how I could possibly stress this more. Every time I see a heading like this, I get scared that an EDA is having a severe problem and could possibly use my help. When I read the letter and find out it's only a plea for tapes, I get very, very pissy. Quite a few of you know what I'm like when I'm pissy- not a pretty sight. Therefore, I'd like everyone to remember this : There IS a website set up JUST for people to offer and ask for tapes, merchandise, ETC. Terrence, web angel extrordinaire, has a great site. It's at http://www.thespis.com/edabase You can post at this site to ask for any angelfood, Jewel merchandise, ETC. Please, please, please, I'm BEGGING you please.... don't post with subject lines like that anymore. I promise, the world will be a much more beautiful place. IF YOU'RE NEW TO THE LIST OR THOROUGHLY CONFUSED BY US : please go to http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup to learn EVERYTHING you need to know about the EDAs and list etiquette. I personally don't like to copy commercial material but I do sometimes. The reason I do it is because of the outrageous prices for CD's these days. Do you know how much it costs to make a CD? About 5 cents. Makes you wonder where the rest of the $15 goes. They could sell CD's for a LOT less a still make a nice chunk of money. At $15 many people can't afford to buy many of the CD's they like. Even tapes are expensive $10+. That's too expensive for many people, including me. Copies are the ONLY way to get many songs I like. A little friendly advice to aspiring poets... I read most of the poems that get posted on the list and for the most part, they're not bad. Like all art, some are better than others and fewer still are truly great. Has anyone been paying attention to what makes the great ones great? It's ambiguity folks. Lesson one of Creative Writing 101 is "Show Don't Tell". Did anyone read the poem that was posted a few days ago? It was a shining example of this rule. The writer never said anything outright. Instead she described the event, pointing out details that served to illustrate her subject. Basically, she gave us, the reader, a little credit. The poem required us to imagine, as all good writing does. If your subject is what a crappy day you've had, don't say that you've had a crappy day. Instead, describe how your feet feel after a crappy day. Or what you'd most like to be doing after your crappy day. Or how the world looks or sounds because you've had a crappy day. Do any of these successfully and the reader will know more precisely how you feel than if you had said "I had a really crappy day." Unfortunately, this isn't as simple a style transition as it sounds. You have to learn to bathe in your emotions. (See what I did there? You can't really bathe in emotions, but still you understood what I meant!) Start practising right away. Find something to experience, and then write about it. Then find something else and write about it. Only practise can make you into a great anything. It would be extremely arrogant of me to post one of my pieces right now after giving advice, so I won't. But I promise that if this EDA poetry thing starts, I'll be a regular contributor and I'll want criticism as regularly. (My best friend almost reduced me to tears once when she was criticising my work. I took it too personally. I think many EDAs are going to feel this same cold shower if this poetry thing starts and people are open and forward with criticism. We'll all have to adjust and grow together.) Keep writing everyone, art makes you beautiful. I asked this last week and no one said anything in response. What happened to the EDA poetry page? Newer members of the list might not remember it from late last year. Someone was setting up a poetry page and I even contributed a few, only to watch the whole idea seemingly fade away. anyone knwo anything about this page and its whereabouts? My name is greg darone, and im a jewel lover. Now, i can start my 12 step program. I got hooked(introduced) to Jewel by my friend just 3 weeks ago. She lent me her "Pieces of You", and gave me a copy of her "Rare Angels - 1995" tape. I love them. I listen to them all day (and part of the night). I joined this mailing list this morning, and now have 30 some emails in my mailbox! Please, if there is anything anyone can do for an aspiring Jewel lover, please do it! I would really like to get another tape (like the "Rare Angels - - 1995" one (It's live!)). Thanks for reading this everyone. Your fellow Jewel lover, Greg Darone PS. What does EDA mean? You use it so much, but I still can't figure it out! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 1997 20:55:10, -0500 From: HCCZ70C@prodigy.com ( SARAH MERRITT) Subject: plea to EDAs I have something to ask....I live in upstate NY, actually near Woodstock, for all of you who went to Jewelstock. For some reason, I never got tickets to any Jewel shows within a reasonable distance for this summer, and now I am really hoping to get some. There are almost none left to buy, except for really bad seats or those from scalpers costing over $100 dollars. If there are any EDAs out there with two extra tickets to any shows this summer in the NY-NJ-Mass. area, please email me and I would pay you the cost plus extra if necessary. I know Jewel is playing in Boston, Long Island, and NJ, and I would be eternally grateful to anyone if they could help. Thank you angels.
