I believe your description of an EDA, however very thorough and insightful, is still lacking the overall factor of "acceptance". A TRUE EDA would accept ALL people, regardless of what we percieve their flaws to be (such as people loving someone for their body). I am not ready to assume that simply because someone admires Jewel for her physical qualities, that they are automatically a bad person. They are still human, and maybe even a little more honest than many who have responded to the article that you are refering to. They are also still exposed, at least to some degree, to Jewel's music, and hence, the many messages it carries. And to me, that is good, no matter what the original reason for inquiry. Just thought some of you might want to be aware of this: According to an article in the financial times, Atlantic, Warner Bros., Virgin, and several other record labels are starting (this month) to focus on illegal music distribution on the Internet. WHAT THIS MEANS =========================== Whether you know it or not, making a WAV or RA or MIDI file available on the Internet can legally be referred to as distribution. So, if you happen to have a 30 second WAV file of YWMFM on your website, you are illegally distributing music. So, please be aware that if you are caught by a record label and they decide to prosecute (which will be likely since they have great evidence), you can receive the following sentence PER COUNT (as in per song distributed): up to $2500 fine (in MOST cases) and up to 6 months in prison (in MOST cases) Not only this, did you know that if a website has illegal material on it, the person who is HOSTING that website can also receive various charges? It's true. I'd hate to see any of my friends end up in jail.... anyways, these record labels are hiring teams of people to do nothing but surf the www and look for songs that are on their particular label. The site is printed and saved and entered for evidence and 2 rulings of this have already been delivered: 1. 16-year old Jason Heslep received 2 years Probation and a fine of $5,000 in restitution for having 5 Van Halen Real Audio files available on his Geocities site. Geocities was fined $15,000 for not closely monitoring their server. 2. 23-year old Lindsey Ferniece was given 30 days in prison and a $17,000 fine for having a library of 72 various audio files of various Warner Bros. artists. The owner of her server (which was not specified) was mandated to shut the server down and pay $20,000 to Warner Bros. This is not funny stuff, is it? At any rate, with this bullshit that happened, all fan's of Jewel should be aware of what happen in San Diego. I worte to a local radio station...... Hi Dave, This is a quick account of the event's of tonight. Please forgive any spelling mistakes.... Tonight is the ninth of June, monday. I just came home form Jewel show at Java Joes, and I have to let you know about this bull$hat that occured. You will excuse my "french"...I am mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. I arrived at 3:30 in the afternoon because I knew Java Joes was small and I wanted a good seat. I sat patiently for three hours untill 6:30. At approx. 6:30, I was let in and bought my ticket. I sat in a chair on the left side of the stage, baked up against the pool table, no more then ten feet away form the stage. The show would not start for approx. three more hours, untill 9:30. I made small talk with people around me and found out the show was just as sold out the day before. I also found out she played for approx. two hours. I was really excited at the thought of seeing such a strong and powerful artist in such a small intimate setting, for a complete two hour show. Time marched on, and the room became extremely full. Full to the point, where the people around me commented on the fact "how could they be letting anyone else in??". Full to the point of no walking room, I mean people's backs aginst my legs on the chair. Full to the point, of a wall of people standing in the back in front of the door. Full to the point, of people doubling and tripling sitting on the pool tables. Jewel arrived at approx. 10:00 and started the show with little fanfare. She was "on" so to speak form the first note. She started to pick up steam and energy as the show progressed. Everyone could tell this was going to be a great show. Then it happened. It was diguised as something small and Jewel was the first to see. At approx 10:40 Jewel's assistant handed her a note. She read it to herself and continued playing. At approx 10:50 she was handed another note, and then became invloved in a conversation with the manager of Java Joes. At that point she stated there was some kind of problem, one which she said she could not talk about, and the show would have to end then. She was going to do one more song and that was it. The crowd was stunned! Nothing, no warning. So she started to sing and within her song, she cleaverly told us that the fire marshell was outside and he was the reason we had to cut the show short. "We were overcrowded" she said. I couldn't believe this....Everyone was mad! She finished and the crowd started to become a little unruley. There was demands for our money back, etc. Jewel saved the day by taking the concert outside for the next hour. It's something she offered to do on her own intitive. It was mart and brave. So where did all this leave me. Well I am mad. I want your listener's to know a few things. I want your radio station which reccomends this establishment to know a few things. That Java Joes did NOT offer any refund, or free show, or any form a compensation for this. Not even a we're "sorry". I also would like to get some answers. Maybe you guys could help? Shouldn't Java Joes know exactly how many people they can have in there bulding? Shouldn't Java Joes have done something to calm the people and restore faith in there establishment? Further, I want to know where the Fire Department get's off grandstanding in the middle of the show. I realize they have a job to do; however, a few things strike me as odd. Java Joes had just as many people the night before, why didn't they stop it then?? Why let the show go on a complete hour before shutting it down?? They could have been inside and shut the show down when it first started. Better yet they could have WARNED Java Joes to not let any more people in. Isn't the real job of the public servants to help us. The best help, would have been to control the situation by watching the people before the fact. Not by, allowing it to occur then taking action. The only good thing I can say about this is that Jewel acted like an angel. She calmed the whole crowd, and got them to move outside. She diffused the situation and turned it to a good thing. She is an asset to her profession and is a real human. She should be comended for her quick intelligent handeling of the situation. I will happily go see her again, just not at Java Joes. So what to do?!? Perhaps, your great radio station could check into this? Obtain an apology, maybe get our money back.....I don't know. I think the only thing that would satisfy me would be a written or verball apology from Java Joes. That's all I can think of. Thank you for allowing me to spew off a little of my anger. I am writing a letter to the Reader, to the newspaper, to the other two alternative radio stations, etc. I am going to letas many people in San Diego know about this as possible. I just hope you can do something for me and the rest of your listener's who attended the show. Dave if this is to hot for you to handle could you see it get's to whoever can rattle some cages....thank you! Thanks Nathan for the info re Jewel's guitars! There are two really informative articles about Jewel and her guitars in Acoustic Guitar magazine. Great close up shots of the Ferrington and lots of information about from the maker down to the little icons on the neck and German inscription on the head. I read some articles about Jewel in several other magazines recently and here are my thoughts: Acoustic Guitar Magazine's article as I said above is GREAT! Seventeen Magazine has a small article about Jewel, same old stuff, but really small. Good pic of her in her van though. Guitar World Acoustic magazine has a very large and beautiful pic of Jewel in her van w/big blue guitar. Good article and long interview. Details Magazine has an article about Jewel which I though was pretty crappy! There's nice pic of her on the cover, and inside too, but the interviewer, Steven Daly, must not like her very much. The facts of the article are pretty much the same old stuff, but then Mr. Daly puts his 2 cents in and comments here and there and they are just put downs. He starts off the article by implying that the EDAs, Jewel's internet fan club, are cult members following there leader! He said that jewel has a conviction like a cult member too. He goes on to describe a "tiny zit" on Jewel's check bone and says that she'd be in Victoria's Secret catalogue if it weren't for her crooked teeth. This jerk looks for anything negative - what's with that? How about saying something nice and not zooming in on peoples faults. This insensitive clown, Steve Daly, goes on to describe her show in San Diego, and said that Jewel's "novelty" songs should come with free insulin (Insulin or other drugs is what they treat a person with if they don't have enough sugar in their bodies to prevent diabeties). Jerk Daly says that Jewel shouldn't try to sing about injustices and other certain songs and says she should recalibrate her "Cheese Alert". He says her voice "veers all over the place in search of an identity" He calls Jewel a "veritable folk-pop Sybil. Jerk Daly implies that if it weren't for her physical attractiveness people would get up and leave the show. I hated that article and don't recommend it to anyone. I think everyone who cares enough should write Details Magazine and trash that Steven Daly guy. We should at least request that he never be allowed to interview Jewel again since he's so full of rot. I was wondering if any of you had any information on how to obtain copies of the following: 1. EDA Cover Tape (Jewel songs covered by EDAs) 2. The Vidwo Compilation of Jewel's T.V. Appearances (If it is completed yet) 3. The Wizard of Oz in Concert video (starring Jewel). Regarding the Wizard of Oz video, I called Movies Unlimited at 1-800-523-0823 - - they didn't have it on their computer data base check. I called Time-Warner at 1-800-672-6202 - they said it's no longer available. I called Warner Video at 1-800-201-8844 - they had it, I ordered it, then they called back and said it is no longer available and credited my card. I wouldn't mind a copy of it since I can't purchase it anywhere. I hope you can help me reach my Jewel goals. Well, it's good to know the final tracklist, I guess... Anyone want to volunteer to grab a copy so we can look at another tree? I'm more than happy to help as a dubber, but my time is up&down enough that I can't do the job needed to coordinate or seed. I wonder if we need to, actually... all the tracks sounded like they're probably songs that have already shown up on other trees. Today BlockBuster has ust finalized the list of bands that will be at the show. From what I can tell the following bands will be playing on Friday only with the exception of the Nixon which will be playing both days. The Nixons Soak Third Eye Blind Souls Sugar Ray 10,000 Maniacs (with new lead singer Mary Ramsey) JackoPierce Unfortunatly Toad the Wet Sprocket isn't going to ba able to attend due to negotiations but I am sure that all will be happy with the linup. If you would like to find out more about these bands then check out the following page on BB website http://www.blockbuster.com/rockfest97/otherart.htm From what I am told there will be a huge tent on site throughout the weekend which BB will have to sell stuff and where the autpographing sessions will be taking place. I just found out last week that some of the bands will be performing an "in house" set inside the tent. It could be before a particular band does their autographing, I am not sure. But you can look forward to acoustic sets by some of the aformentioned bands. IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER =) I have also put together a list of items that you don't want to forget before you leave the house. If you have any questions on this or anything else don't hesitate to ask. And if you can think of anything to add just let me know. One more thing. There will be NO SHORTAGE OF TICKETS, so if you want to go and don't have a ticket then worry not, I have plenty of extras. You Heard it First Here. This announcement was brought to you by your official EDA RockFest Committee.
