Apparently the opps are some immature teenagers whose parents never taught them any manners. It didnt seem right that the ops of a Jewel channel should be swearing at people, taunting people, and kicking people for no reason. Someone should do something about this. I motion that the EDA's should either A) Boycott the #Jewel channel and discontinue refering to it as an official EDA chat channel or B) somehow regain control of it and steer it back on the right track. Free speech is free speech but what i saw was exactly what Jewel is against, cynicism, and just flat out being not nice to people. We can all sit and say that outer appearances do not matter, but come on, how true is that really? Whether it be moralistic, or not...we are ALL guilty of concern of appearances, whether it be ourselves, or potential mates. I don't think that there is anyone that can whole heartedly, honestly, say that they don't care about the physical appearances of people. AND..... 2. JOHN-ERIC! YOU ARE SOOOOO DAMN CUTE....YOU BETTER SHUT UP WITH YOUR NEGATIVITY REGARDING YOUR APPEARANCE. YOU ARE A HOTTIE AND YOU AND I ARE GONNA TEAR UP OB WHEN YOU MOVE HERE! l LOVE YOU! I motion that the Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on a minute!!!! Most of the people on the Jewel channel (especially the ops) are friends! A lot of times things can get a little... well, maybe PG rated, but that's it!! And everyone jokes around and cusses at each other sometimes, but it's just JOKING AROUND!!!! None of the ops are ever intentionally mean to someone who hasn't done anything. I know it sometimes is hard to tell the difference between joking around and being serious over the computer, but trust me, THEY ARE JOKING!!! :) *hugs* Emily ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Jun 1997 18:27:12 -0700 From: Casey Hansen Subject: NJC: Some Chick at my school Okay, there is this girl at my school that looks exacitcly like jewel, and I'm not kiding! Hi all. Here is a recommendation from Down Under. A 20 year old called Julia Darling was discovered busking last year in sydney or melbourne or somewhere and snapped up by someone in the industry, given a contract by Virgin after a few live gigs and now is in America trying to get contracts there too. If you see or hear anything of her, look out for her. I've been nothing short of entranced when I've heard her. She has long blonde hair sort of like Joan Osbourne and is folky with edge. An article I just read called her a young Natalie Merchant but I haven't heard the similarities there. Her first single, 'Overloading God' is just getting picked up here and I REALLY recommend her as someone to look out for. You might hear her on radio shows or on TV doing promo stuff so keep an eye out for her. Finally Australia seems to be moving beyond the Tina Arena/Merril Bainbridge brand of female music. I have long hoped for someone to fill the gaping hole in our small industry. There was an article in the May 26, 1997 issue of Newsweek on Shawn Colvin, and Jewel was mentioned in this. That doesn't mean anything good was said about her. They actually said bad things about her and tried to put her down, comparing her to Shawn Colvin. They made fun of her, and then when they mentioned that Shawn was appearing in the Lilith Fair tour along with Jewel, they said that maybe she could teach Jewel something about music or something like that. I thought it was really rude and I was just wondering if anyone saw it. Well, seventeen has an annual reader's poll, and this year when I sent in my survey, I remember being disappointed that Jewel wasn't nominated in any of the categories. But... there was room to write in people, and a whole crapload of people must have done that w/ Jewel, because she is named the solo artist of the year, and for music newcomer of the year, "Sitting pretty in third place: Jewel." There is also a section in it called "Star Power," which has 20 new actors, musicians and such who seventeen seems to think have staying power. there's a picture of Jewel sitting in the back of a blue VW van w/ a guitar by her side, and a little article. Here's the article: It's hard to imagine that Jewel--with her sweet, soothing voice and heart-shaped face--has a dark side. But the 22-year-old singer has enough grit to rival Courtney Love. She grew up in Alaska in a log cabin with no electricity or running water, camped out in a van when she couldn't pay the rent as a struggling singer and was even in a rap group called La Creme. But it wasn't her hip-hop skills that put her in the spotlight--it was folk songs like "You Were Meant for Me" and "Who Will Save Your Soul." These singles became Top 10 hits, with a little help from MTV and VH1. Fans anxious for her next album--out in early '98--will have to get their Jewel fix with a re-recorded version of "Foolish Games" on the Batman & Robin soundtrack this summer. As you might expect, it's a gem. -Angie Maximo Ok, just thought I'd share. :) I know it's a stupid article, but that's pretty typical of seventeen. BTW, all of this is in the new July issue of seventeen. *hugs* Emily ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 1997 00:48:29 -0400 From: N4SIR@webtv.net (Donny Emmert) Subject: autographed POY cd i dunno if ii can post this but here it goes anyway..i was searching the internet for "STL" when i cam across a unique item..it's an autographed "POY" cd by Jewel...a record shop in (i think) Chicago has it..the store is called Dr.Wax...it is up for auction and the bid is up to $99...the auction is over at the end of the month..i'll try to find the URL and post it....use a search engine to find Dr.Wax..it's worth a shot....DONNY ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 1997 00:52:00 -0400 From: N4SIR@webtv.net (Donny Emmert) Subject: Dr Wax - --WebTV-Mail-927520371-1026 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT here is the link to the autographed POY cd i posted earlier....click on the link and ZOOM, away you go - --WebTV-Mail-927520371-1026 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; X-URL-TITLE="Dr Wax"; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT http://www.drwax.com/ - --WebTV-Mail-927520371-1026-- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #415 ***************************
