I think her unique perspective on issues like discrimination, cynicism and the beauty of life would be well=20 suited for PI's format. In addition, every time I see her on a talk=20 show, she talks for just a few minutes and then sings. On PI, she'd get to speak about more than Alaska, yodeling, and her album. U2 is just totally out of control. they forget the point of it all. they go around on tour with all this SHIT and the music is lost. i also saw jewel at the tower and was touched. it was her out there. nothing else. just her and a guitar. it was intimate and special. it was the kind of night that you never forget. i think that is what music is about. its about the lyrics that touch your soul. or the guitar solo that moves you or that singer that has it all that just inspires your life and the life of so many others.well thats my opinion at least. We place so much emphasis on looking a certain way, and then people try their darnedest to look "perfect." All this does is make us unhappy with the way we are, and it encourages us to BUY BUY BUY to make ourselves 'enough.' I'm not saying I'm exempt from this. But at least I recognize how dangerous it is. Bless and Be Blessed; spread the Love! I now have two extra tickets (since my friends don't think they can go because of it being Labor Day weekend). I would love to meet some of the fellow EDAs in the tri-state area so if anyone wants to go, please e-mail me and maybe we can carpool and go down together. It's about a two-hour drive for me - I'm in New York - and the ride would be much better if I didn't have to do it by myself ! So anyone who would like to go, drop me a line and hopefully we can set something up. Take care all :) Joe jf105@ix.netcom.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Jun 1997 19:23:05 EDT From: westleyd@juno.com Subject: Re: NJC: lilith fair and a guitar website On Tue, 03 Jun 1997 16:04:52 EST trujillo@netwrx.net writes: >At 12:39 AM 6/2/97 EDT, you wrote: >>I'm not a guitar player, but if you need help with HTML coding, I've >got >>some pretty powerful tricks! You seem to know about > Jewel's guitars. Can you please tell me what kind of guitars she uses? The > yellow one and especially that blue one. > > > Thanks > Mike Ok Mike here goes... The "Yellow one" is a Taylor 912-C. Please don't call it the "yellow" one. It's a hand-made grand concert (that means it has a smaller body than usual) with a lot of beautiful craftsmanship in it. (There aren't a lot of things I wouldn't give to own such a wonderful instrument.) It retails for about $3600 US. Then how did Jewel acquire it so early in her career? Rumour has it that there's a flaw in the finish somewhere. As a rule of thumb, this lowers the price %50. If it matters at all to you, the top is made of Englemann spruce, the back and sides are Indian rosewood, the neck is mahogany and the fretboard is ebony. And those gorgeous inlays on the fretboard are abalone. "Big blue" as we love to call it is custom made Ferrington creation. I have to say that I don't know much about this guitar except that I believe Jewel's electric guitar is also a Ferrington. I had a pretty good look at "Big Blue" once when I got invited on stage with her (this is a whole other story) and I got a few details out of that. The fretboard is definitely ebony and the body style mimics a dreadnought (a typical acoustic guitar). Offhand, I'd say the (elaborate) fretboard inlays are mother of pearl. Both guitars have piezo pickups in the bridge and no eq onboard. I almost forgot to mention her "cheap" guitar! It's also a Taylor from the 12-C series. It's a 612-C actually, costing ONLY $2300. The main difference between her two Taylors is that this one has maple back and sides, with dot inlays on the fretboard, and it has a pickguard. It's amplified by a Sunrise magnetic pickup. The only picture I've seen of this guitar is in the issue of Rolling Stone featuring Jewel. There's a little picture of her playing it at some New York gig. (She's also been photographed playing a Takamine but they're not very good guitars - no personality. I wouldn't be surprised if she just borrowed or rented if for the presidential shindig where she played it.) She also plays D'addario strings. I hope this answers any questions regarding Jewel's guitars. If anyone could add to this, please do! Could someone tell me how many videos did Jewel make of YWMFM? If they are two videos has MTV or VH1 ever shown both of them? Tracy New Member =) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jun 1997 20:42:53 -0400 (EDT) From: She Who Is Subject: Jewel videos Yeah...going along with the recent question about versions of YWMFM, I have a question. At the cafeteria where I work during the schoolyear, we have a video machine on which one can request certain music videos. Well, last spring, 1996, there was a video of a song by a new artist called Jewel...the song was You Were Meant For Me...but I could have sworn that the version was the original single released (does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?), released before WWSYS, where she omits the part about "Dreams Last so long, even after you're gone" and the part about going out in the rain and seeing a movie that was happy and she was sad...you know what I mean. Now, sometime ago on this list, there was discussion of the YWMFM video directed by Sean Penn. Can someone give me more information on this video? Is the version of the song in this video the version to which I am referring? I'm trying to figure out if it was the Sean Penn video that the machine had...if it wasn't, I don't know where it could have come from...I must say that I don't remember what it looked like, because I was always too busy working to watch...imagine that!
