If you look at some of her more established touring partners (Young, Dylan), they stopped playing unreleased songs live years ago, because of bootleggers. Maybe now with the first commercial Jewel bootleg being out there, she'll start thinking twice about playing upcoming/unfinished songs in concert (I HOPE NOT!!!). What really got me into Jewel wasn't POY, but the other songs that I heard in concert for the first time. Most of my favourite songs aren't on the CD, and I listen to angelfood at least as much as the official stuff (although I still buy all the official releases, including soundtracks, so noone can claim that the tapes hurt album sales in my case :) ). We've been blessed with an artist of relentless creativity, and one that isn't afraid to share the creative process with her audience. This is like saying that unless you >have Netscape 2.0 or higher, web access and the $$$ to buy a good com >and modem, you cannot have good seats. Actually there should be good seats when the general sales open up. From what I saw, most of the internet-only reserved tickets were in the 200 and 300 levels along he right side only, in fact I didn't hear of anyone who got 100 levels. Those 200 seats aren't bad, but it's not like they were offering the front rows online. I'm not sure what the point of this was. My guess is either it was to allow out-of-towners on the mailing lists a chance to get tickets, or more likely it was a trick on TM's part to promote their website, to give internet users a reason to try it out. In any case, the communication to us from Nettwerk was awful. You probably saw the note from Nettwerk I cross-posted to the list saying the tickets would definitely be available at ALL outlets, not just internet, yet it did turn out to be internet-only after all. There was also uncertainty as to whether they were going on sale at 10:00 or 10:30, and Nettwerk's last post didn't clarify that. And TicketMaster's deceptive business practices continue on the web too, I see. I don't know of any other business that doesn't tell you the price of something you're buying until you've made your non-refundable purchase. In this case, TM's site gives the ticket price and says there "may be" other service charges added. Sleazy. Should be illegal. Anyway, the bottom line is the outlets should have good seats available when regular sales open up if you missed the online presale. I'm not sure when that is...maybe Tuesday morning? But don't take my word for it. I feel the need to place my two cents and agree. When I first subscribed to the digest, I figured I'd get info about Ms. Kilcher once or twice a week. It would be concise, organized, and probably dry reading. Imagine my shock when I checked my mail server the next day and had four LOOOOOOOONG letters all from jewel-digest@ smoe.org! I let the mail pile up, having "more important things to do". Finally, I started reading the massive stack on my server. I was surprised to find so little ABOUT Jewel in a Jewel newsletter. But as I read the numerous NJC's and SJC's, I began to feel like these people were more than just rabid Jewel fans: They were interesting in and of themselves. As I continued through the many Jewel-less posts, I learned that these people thought of each other like family. After all, only amongst your family and closest of friends could you write "I'm having a bad day", and half a dozen others speak up with some reason to cheer up. In a world where so much we say and do is scrutinzed and demeaned, it is rare that we can find a haven from those attacks. Where the slings and arrows of the cynics fall away, and where only love and understanding can be heard. I truly feel that the Jewel Digest (and it's loose-leaf conterpart) is one of those rare places. We don't have to focus on one aspect of our lives: We get to be the dynamic selves we are. And I would hate to lose that home-like atmosphere. I want this list to give me the same feeling that Ms. Kilcher's music does: Warm and comfortable. And I think eliminating the NJC's would make this list a little more cold and sterile. My two pennies A new Angel Jamie L. He is PRESUMED dead as they have been unable to find his body. But it's pretty much understood that he's gone. The following is an AP news line on Jeff - the only official news I have. For those of you who have been emailing me asking who Jeff Buckley was - this article gives a little info. Do yourself and oick up a copy of his first album "Grace." Heather .c The Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Heavy rain hampered the search Saturday for singer Jeff Buckley, who vanished Thursday while swimming in the Mississippi River. Police boats searched for Buckley but it was too dangerous for divers. Buckley, 30, disappeared Thursday night after he and a friend went to the Memphis harbor with a portable stereo player and a guitar, police Maj. Jim Tusant told The Commercial Appeal. Tusant said Buckley, fully clothed, waded into the river and began to sing and swim on his back. Buckley is signed with Columbia Records and had come to Memphis in February to work at a recording studio. While described as a folk singer, Buckley's music has gravitated more toward rock. Critics compare his sweeping voice to Van Morrison's and his bombastic lyrics to those of Led Zeppelin. His 1994 album ``Grace'' yielded the alternative hit ``Last Goodbye,'' and he contributed to Patti Smith's 1996 album ``Gone Again.'' Buckley is the son of songwriter Tim Buckley, who died of a drug overdose in 1975, and was best known for his 1967 album ``Goodbye & Hello.'' Nobady >wants bad press....especially at he beginning of concert season. The problem is, TM has already demonstrated it doesn't care about bad publicity. They couldn't have received much worse than they got from Pearl Jam over the past couple of years, yet they haven't changed a thing because of it. If anything, the legal case being thrown out has probably just increased TM's arrogance. The problem is they have nothing to lose from bad publicity. People want to go to concerts and sporting events, and TM has a monoply on those big ticket sales, so no matter how much people hate them, they must usually deal with them if they want to go to the event. Realistically, the situation won't change until another company comes along to compete with TM for ticket sales. Unfortunately, TM has exclusive contracts with most of the big venues, making it impossible for the venue to deal with another ticket seller, at least until contract renewal. And if a competitor does come along, TM is rolling in so much cash that they can offer some very nice incentives to the venues to keep their business. If they are to get any serious competition, it would probably have to come from another fortune-500 type corporation that has the same kind of money to throw around to lure away those contracts. TM's monopolistic position was the basis of Pearl Jam's anti-trust lawsuit, and one can only wonder how much TM flexed their influence in having it thrown out. By the way, I don't have a problem with a ticket seller charging for their services. They make my life easier by letting me buy tickets more easily than going to the box office, and I don't deny them the right to make a profit from operating their national computerized network. My problem is with all the sleazy business practices they have. The unreasonably high service charges (CDN $9 per ticket for Toronto Lilith!), and the way they conceal those charges until you're actually buying (or have bought) the ticket. The fact they charge their TM service charges even at the box office, where one should not be forced to pay for the 'convenience' of going to an outlet (another result of their monopolistic contracts). The fact that sales are non-refundable...try that in any other large competitive retail business. And of course the inadequecies of their system...the long waits, busy phone lines, glitchy website, and limited number of retail outlets. I think you're right that in many cases the threat of bad publicity can be an effective way to pressure a company. But in TM's case I think there will have to be some competition in place before they care to listen to the people they're supposed to be serving. That's not to say people shouldn't publicly complain if they want to, since that's about the only recourse customers have at this point. Best! She comes to San Diego on June 12 on beautiful Mission Beach at Canes. But the real reason I'm writing is to alert you to the opening acts. First will be Mary Dolan. You may have read my crazed passionate raving after seeing "Little Ms. Dynamite" for the first time. If you are not touched by her from the moment she opens her mouth, you have no heart and should leave right away. But I warn you, after you leave, don't go on the roller coaster next door. It wouldn't be a safe place to be. By the time her set gets rolling, there is bound to be seismic activity caused by her performance. Every tune, from her house rocking songs that have a touch of Melissa Etheridge and her covers of Janis to her ballads that squeeze the last drop of blood from your heart, have a sign of a star being born. Her fine CD, "Grow," only gives you a glimpse of what you can expect. She will be followed by Randi Driscoll. I have just seen her for only the third time. I'm hoping to see many more performances of this Diva. Her promo 8x10 has the words "Original Music" across the bottom. Original is certainly the right word to use in describing Randi's music. Another word would be Perfection. She has been compared to Natalie Merchant, but it is only because she is so hard to compare to anyone. Her voice is beautiful, smooth and the quality of a fine wine that you sip slowly and the bouquet and aroma stays with you as a long wonderful memory. She is so cute and it serves as her only distraction, but get over it so you don't miss any of this very serious music. After the two of them perform, Dar Williams will only be dessert for the best of what San Diego has to offer. But you know me, I never miss dessert after having a fine meal. I went to buy tickets and found they only have 35 left. Tickets are $10. Cash only as I found out when I went to get mine. So please leave the last two tickets for me. Sweet Jesus, I`m gone away for two days and what do I get home to..? The news that Jeff Buckley is dead.. I loved him, he was such a wonderful singer and songwriter.. And.. I can`t believe this.. I`ve been reading the Sony Daily Dish for some time now, so thrilled about the arrival of a new Buckley-album.. and then this.. I dreamt that Jewel was performing in out city library's parking lot (weird, I know, but dreams are like that), and right before she was suppose to perform, I saw her sitting in the middle, so I decided to go over and talk to her. I said, "Hi, Jewel!" And she replied, "Hi!". "My name's Mark, and I'm an EDA. I'm so glad to meet you!" Then she said, "Oh, hi Mark, glad to meet you too." And we started talking about stuff. Then when she was suppose to perform, people started yelling out what they wanted to hear. I only heard "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant for Me" being shouted out, but I wanted her to play something else "new". So she sat down and started singing "Race Car Driver". She was great, (and I was on frisbee patrol ;) ) but that was the only song that she sang. Then we went over to this other place, where it was less crowded, in the parking lot and started talking to each other again. Then this guy ran up to us and started saying really fast, "My brother loves 'You Were Meant for Me', my brother loves 'You Were Meant for Me'! He looked like he was about to attack Jewel. This guy was really weird and hyper, but then he was gone as quickly as he arrived. So after that, we kept talking again and decided to go ice skating together (this was weird because there is no ice skating rink anywhere near our city's library), so we walked together across the parking lot, which was pretty crowded (it seemed like there was a big party there or something), and on the other side of the lot was this ice rink. It was soooo small, but when we got inside, we already had our ice skates on (I don't even remember putting them on) and we started skating and stuff. But there were all these beach balls in the middle of the rink and a lot of little kids were skating in the middle playing with them. Then, I woke up. Weird, huh? But when I woke up, I was sooo full of energy. Not like I usually am when I wake up in the morning. I'm usually so dead tired and always wanting to go back to sleep. I tried that so many times, so I could get back to my dream, but I never got back there. =( It really sucked too. I woke up because my parents were already awake and I heard my dad typing something. It was soo cool though. It was weird, but cool. =) Mark - --- Inside my heart there's an empty room.
