Ripiano ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 1997 00:00:24 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Health Questions (Re: Jewel on Hard Rock Live) I've wondered some of the same things as Albert -- and his recent post about the need for adequate sleep, glucose etc. was very thought provoking. In my life, I've run myself into the ground a few times, but I try not to anymore. I remember Jewel having to cancel her Montreal concert (March 5 1997) and now it's Cologne (and Hamburg?) that her health didn't allow. Plus there's been several reports of her intense lack of sleep and her exhaustive schedule. Jewel suffers from a chronic kidney ailment -- all of this stress can't be helpful. Why IS there such an endless schedule of performances, shows, interviews etc. without some reasonable breaks in between? (Not to mention the travel fatigue that comes with moving every day or two.) Jewel is a huge success by commercial standards -- so can't there be some easing up on her schedule? She'll break around the world when the time is right. Mental and physical health is very important to all of us. I was just reading a few quotes in The Vancouver Sun newspaper of March 27 1997 and putting them in the context of the questions raised by Albert: "Kilcher sounds like she's on the brittle edge of burn-out. 'I've had four weeks off in 2 1/2 years,' she says. 'I am tired but I think this is what I'm built for." But even a draft horse can only work so hard. "Sometimes I go stir crazy, seeing nothing but hotel rooms and buses and the inside of a club in the middle of the night. But I do it because of the connection I find when I'm playing. When I play, I can feel the people in the room. I make the connection and I'm filled with passion. It's that simple." Is it possible that Jewel's passion for performing, the mutual need to connect with people, is resulting in unhealthy conditions being ignored? I've read and heard recently about artists like Alanis and Tori Amos taking long breaks to get rejuvenated. And Canadian folksinger Bruce Cockburn (who's, admittedly older, but we're all just mortal) has come back to recording and performing after a one-year break according to a local newspaper. Obviously one has to find the performance level that works for one's own body -- but I don't know that anyone alive can survive well on a fews hours sleep each night, let alone getting only a few solid hours rest in a week! Sleep (REM and all that) is critical to our health. I share Albert's concerns. And if someone that I knew among my friends was showing signs of burnout, I'd sure want to help. EDAs can perform all sorts of miracles of kindness and compassion. I sure hope Jewel's health is not being neglected. Anyone know? Not to mention she was probably still a > little jet-lagged from being in Europe and not giving her body the rest it > needed to combat the jet-lag :-) > Tammy :-) We seem to have a very bad trend going on here. :( Does anyone know if Jewel is pushing herself this hard by her choice or Atlantic's? She's only going to set herself up for a fall if she keeps pushing herself so hard that she's going without sleep and keeps getting sick. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but being a situation a few years back where I did indeed sacrifice myself, my health, and my sanity for others in a cause I felt was right and just, I found I was no good to myself or anyone else in that kind of pain- then the depression sets in :( . The physical toll is nothing compared to the emotional or the psychological toll. I can't even imagine what it's like with the pressure to be on stage and to always be at your best during a performance. I hope I'm just being overly sensitive, but the warning signs are a bit too close to home for me. If anyone who knows better can just tell me that I'm overreacting, I'd appreciate it deeply. ^_^;;;; Albert Wang Dark Seraph ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 1997 03:04:05 -0400 From: mskywalker@webtv.net (Matthew Turner) Subject: EDA Cover Tape Just got my copy today!!! Hello all EDAs, Two quick things: First--- Hundreds of people have contacted me privately in the past wanting to send Jewel some lyrics they've written, script ideas for videos &/or music they've written. At her attorney's advice, Jewel cannot accept these kinds of things. Any of the above that are sent to Jewel via her mailing adresses in the CD will be returned to the senders. Unfortunately, many artists fall victim to lawsuits when people claim an artist used their work. So please refrain from sending these things. They cannot be considered & it creates extra work & expense having to return these items. I'm sure people outside the list will continue to send these things anyway, but at least the EDAs won't be making this mistake. There are "other" things in mind to utilize the talents on this list very soon. We are still figuring out details & posts about some of these projects will be forthcoming shortly. Stick around! :-) Second--- About a year ago, a list member named Geoff Warder was collecting names & adresses for a Jewel newsletter/fanzine database. Geoff, are you still out there? If not, can anyone who's friends with Geoff please put him in touch with me, if at all possible. I think he was from the Toronto area, but I don't recall for sure. Any help would be appreciated. Just wanted to say hi. My name's Carl and right now I am in northern Illinois but I'm moving to the Malibu, California area on Friday. Let's see... I'm 20 years old and I got into Jewel's music last fall. I never really liked WWSYS when the video was on MTV constantly but when YWMFM came out I fell in love... I borrowed the CD from my friend and listened to it like crazy, then when he wanted it back I bought my own copy. I've probably played Foolish Games about 100 times since then. It's my favorite song along with I'm Sensitive. I play guitar as a hobby, too, and I play people I'm Sensitive a lot. It's a fun song to play. I can also play YWMFM and I'm trying to learn more, like the guitar version of Foolish Games. Let's see... my other hobbies are old motorcycles, music/concerts, movies, reading, and sports (especially baseball - go Cubs!). I've never seen Jewel live... I missed out on tickets at the Chicago Theatre a couple months ago. However, I'm going to be at the Lilith Fair in Irvine, California on July 9th. Not the best place to see Jewel, but I'll take what I can get. Are any other EDAs going to be there? I only have lawn seats because I got a late jump on tickets and then couldn't really afford what actual seats were left. Lawn is pretty fun, though, if you bring a blanket or something. I was thinking a big EDA group on the lawn would be pretty cool. Maybe we could even make a sign or something for Jewel. Well, I have to go now but I'd love to hear from anyone, especially any EDAs from the Malibu or LA area. Bye! I haven't heard the other CD but I'll now be looking for it. One thing I'd like to point out is that Susanna and Jewel are (to me) in two very different catagories. Jewel with her "unique" style and Susanna with hers. Personally I think Susanna's CD is very good when compaired to Meryl Bainbridge and Donna Lewis, both of which I have. Also Susanna's CD is a big step for her. It shows that she is an artist all by herself. It kind of helps take her out of "The Bangels" shadow and shows that she is a capable artist by herself. And I also think the person who mad the comments about Susanna Hoffs should follow his/her own creed "if you don't have anything good to say then don't say anything at all." bruce ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 1997 12:55:02 -0400 From: N4SIR@webtv.net (Donny Emmert) Subject: RACE CAR DRIVER anyone who has been on for about a month should remember the fiasco about the song Race Car Driver and the hub-bub of excitement it caused in this list..well, i have the pleasure of just hearing it on the radio...here in Cleveland we have a kick ass radio station The End 107.9...they played the promo and said they were swarmed with calls about what album this song is on...Race Car Driver was more bluesy and rugged than in her live performance...i liked it....so now we can call up radio stations and request Race Car Driver before the release of Foolish Games...i didn't know radio stations could play unreleased songs....any EDA's have comments? donny ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 1997 12:01:57 -0700 From: bruce Subject: NJC:Good by Highschool, Hello College Well on May 25th I graduated from highschool. I messed up my e-mail thingy so I can't respond directly to the new angel that posted yesterday so here's a message for all eyes. Now I am not a fan of country music per se. The closest thing in my collection of 150 CDs to country is Sheryl Crow, Soul Asylum AND Jewel. (Oh and Pat Metheny's "New Chautauqua".) I know that few of you will admit it, but much of Jewel's music is HEAVILY country* influenced. *I'm not talking about that watered-down-one-hit-wonder-new-country stuff. That's all manufactured "twang-pop" and the guys writing songs for people like Lee Anne Rimes (or insert name here) will tell you that the songs (and the singers) are a dime a dozen. Country's influence stretches far and wide. Like I said, it is a large element in Sheryl Crow's and other "non-country" artists' music. This includes Jewel. If you open your mind up a little bit to country, you'll see that "YWMFM", "Cold Song", "Silver Lining", and several other Jewel favorites are country songs. So it would seem that country music isn't ALL bad. If you're having trouble thinking of just one country song that didn't remind you of an 80 acre farm (lots of corn), try to think of Neil Young's acoustic work, and to a lesser extent, Bob Dylan. Like I said, open your mind. Don't judge music by its placement in the record store, judge it by its content. Now will someone help me down from this soap box? If people don't mind could those planning on going e-mail me. On tickets people can either do the group thing or get seats by themselves. You'll get better seats as individuals but I know people on the list like to sit together. Here is the basic layout of Harborlights. Ths stage faces away from the harbor, and is only about 20 feet from the harbor. The backstage area is behind the stage but is unaccesible unless you are allowed back. Backstage is also where the tour buses pull into so there is nearly no chance of contact with performers. Here's the good news. On the left side of the seats there is a large open space next to the harbor where people can mill about and meet up. Behind the seats there is another large open space. At the back of this space there are concession stands and merchandise booths which create the rear perimeter of the concert venue. Any of these places are a perfect place to meet and talk inside the venue. You can see and hear perfectly from just about anywhere. Also for those of you that don't know Harborlights is entirely under a giant white tent. The parking lot is behind the seats on the other side of a 7 foot fence which surrounds three sides of the seating area. Parking is free with the purchase of tickets. The whole layout is similar to a baseball field. The stage is home plate, the seats are the infield grass. The space behind the seats are the infield dirt, the parking is the outfield, and the harbor is the 1st base stands. Harborlights is one of the truly intimate semi large venues. And to boot you have the sky-line of Boston and the setting of the sun on the water. Also if when you go to buy tickets they are scattered and few in number I would suggest waiting until the week before the show and then check everyday. Usually about 25 seats in the first five rows will open up. If anyone has any other questions you can either e-mail me or go to the Harborlights site through www.boston.com/next, and click on the Harborlights link. I hope this helps everyone out. Talk to you soon. Chris Snyder > >Would now actually be a good time to organize a NE EDA gathering for >Harborlights?
