Jodi Benson, who was the voice of the Little Mermaid. I recently recieved another e-mail from Mike Connel (Ducksoup@spectra.net) and together we have been exchanging information and trying to shed a bit of light on the subject...I have included our last few correspondences for you here to see what we have deduced.... Best, Zeke In a message dated 97-05-23 06:06:22 EDT, you write: << Curiously, told by who? I just talked to Alan on the phone last night who talked to Lenedra just yesterday afternoon on this very subject. Alan works for Lenedra in varioous projects and literally talks to Lenedra (Jewel's mother/co-manager) or Susanne (Jewel's "producer") 4 or 5 times a week and Lenedra told him specifically that Jewel never even considered this role nor has ever been contacted. Can't get more official than the gals mother, if ya ask me. :) By the way, I'm not arguing here, it's just that Alan and I have contact with Jewel people directly (I chat with Jewel's friend/merchandise manager Bibi 3 or 4 times a week) and have been doing so for nearly a year, and have a good relationship with them. They tell us everything, as a matter of fact we know *tons* of things in the works that are not being told to the list yet as they are not settled/decided 100%. That is simply because we don't announce things to the list until Jewel's mother tells us the news is concrete. If Jewel *was* involved with this show, or had been contacted as of yet, Alan and I would know, trust me. (As a matter of fact ALAN broke the news of this show to Lenedra when they talked yesterday) It's common practice for producers of shows like this to 'plant a seed' by spreading rumors of an actor/performer being considered for a role to pique the persons interest, and that may be the case here. Mike >> Mike, I don't want to be argumentative either..and I don't care to get into "who's got the inside scoop" kind of tit for tat that I've seen happen in other lists/msg. boards. My information comes from several different reliable sources including Lisa Grey and Dave Parker of A&R at Atlantic. Also, I do have fairly frequent contact with the creator (and producers) of the show, Rick Law, and he keeps me fairly well posted on their progress as well. The last time we chatted over the net, he told me that he had just spoken earlier in the afternoon with Jewel's mgr. Inga, and that they were still in discussions and were hopefully planning on meeting with Jewel again between the dates I mentioned earlier. He told me his contact with Jewel's rep. Inga, has been almost weekly. If it were just him telling me this info, or if he were trying to hype it up, I might be more skeptical, but I have known him for quite a while and he has been very reliable in the past. Further, as I said Lisa & Dave over at Atlantic have known about the show and ongoing discussions, and were even privy to the first arranged meeting between Jewel and Rick after her Wiltern Theatre show on 4/3/97, having helped facilitate it. Apparently, from what I was able to gather, Rick and Jewel met with Jewel and Inga seperately, Jewel and he spending about 15 minutes together alone in her dressing room/suite. They discussed the premise for the show, and her concieved involvement, where she reportedley confessed her love for cartoons and "animated thingies" (Rick really seemed to enjoy this statement) and said she loves doing "voices and things", and expressed excitement over being involved. I was told, (by everyone on this fact) that she was particularly intrigued because the voice she was (or is) to do was that of a female angel. Actually, I remember back when Rick first told me several months back that they were starting discussions with Jewel's rep. he had told me that even before he had sent her the material, Inga had offered that Jewel was "going to love it", because of her professed affection for angels. Anyway, Rick told me he is supposed to try and talk with Inga later today or early next week. So maybe we will have more of a scoop then? I dunno. I do know Rick says he has Lenedra (spelling?) number, but that he hasn't met her or talked with her yet, that he's just talked/met with Jewel and Inga. The only reason I can see for the possible discrepancy is possibly because the show still isn't commited yet at a network. Maybe the discussions are just still real low-key or something, not full-blown sign on the dotted line? I dunno, I'm just guessing. Anyways, keep in touch, let me know, and I'll let you know what I know when I know it. K? Tom O'Brien ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 May 1997 21:09:39 -0500 From: Greg Dunn Subject: NJC: Rugburns rock Toledo 5/24 You know you're getting obsessive when you start following The Rugburns around from town to town, venue to venue. On the other hand, you start seeing a lot of good shows in the process. As far as I remember, the whole idea of driving to Toledo and catching yet another show came up about the time of the ChuckStock gathering; Shelly welcomed the idea of me coming up for the concert, and we tentatively planned it even if she wasn't able to come down for their Indy show. As it happened, the idea not only worked out, it grew, and soon this informal gathering would take on a life of its own. The first hint that this wasn't going to be an ordinary weekend came when Shelly bound me to silence about some special guests who were coming out just for the holiday. As the date approached, I managed to weasel the information out of her: none other than Tom & Nancy Morales and one of their daughters were going to attend, and try to make not only the Saturday show in Toledo but also the Sunday show in Columbus. Now I knew I would have to go, if only to meet them... Last week, while waiting for our own local band Chuck Marten to perform at a local show, I was talking to Sharron the lead vocalist. She sounded all ready to make the trip herself; being good friends with John Castro, she certainly has as good a reason as any of us to go see the band, wherever they play. She was looking at going to Saturday's show with the rest of us over-21 people. Knowing that there would be an all-ages show in Columbus the following evening, even Toni and Rusty were getting interested in making the trek. I headed out around noon Saturday, planning a quick jaunt and a fast return the following morning. It was extremely warm until I got past Fort Wayne, but on entry to Ohio the skies clouded and it began to cool off. When I arrived at Liz & Shelly's, the skies had darkened and rain was threatening. I discovered that everyone had gone on a food excursion minutes before I arrived, so I chatted with the family (parents, dog and cats) in the back yard while awaiting their return. Soon the caravan came back, and a tide of people poured through the house. I was enthusiastically welcomed by Liz and Shelly, greeted Sharron (who promptly told the story of getting her 8th verbal warning for speeding -- the lady has never had a ticket) and sat down to talk with everyone. Almost everyone -- the Morales clan suddenly emerged from the house. I had never met them before, but I was greeted like a long-lost relative. They all knew my name on sight, and I received a warm hug from Nancy and firm handshakes from Tom and Kaili. Nancy became the center of attention immediately by pulling out her suitcase of newly-acquired used clothing and urging everyone to try on her collection of antique slips. All the ladies, that is. I fully expected the occupants of our neighboring golf course to congregate at the property line to watch the spectacle of several attractive women parading around the back yard in slips. Tom and I had a chance to talk while everyone else chose their outfits for the evening's extravaganza. Shortly thereafter, a familiar station wagon pulled into the driveway, and it was apparent that Toni and Rusty had decided to come early. Shelly was surprised to see them, but they were added to the growing list of attendees in this burgeoning EDA fest. My own equanimity was shaken a few minutes later when I was talking to Tom and Sharron; someone behind me exclaimed "MIA!" and I saw that everyone's favorite turtle from Cleveland had indeed made the trip. I wasted no time in giving her a welcoming hug. That was 10 people already, and more were on their way... After a couple of hours spent readying the appropriate outfits, we were all ready to roll. I commented that with the dazzling array of womanhood dressed up for the event, people were sure to think that Tom and I were gifted with some kind of luck. Liz, Shelly, and Nancy were particularly stunning in their dresses. Due to the size of the crowd and uncertainty of the logistics of our return, we decided to take three cars. I ended up in Mia's car, and we took the second spot in the caravan behind Shelly. After a fun-filled maze of turns through downtown Toledo, we parked at a nondescript little lot next door to Frankie's, and invaded the place en masse. Our first impression was of the extreme small size of the venue -- not much larger than our house's main floor. Second, we realized that one of the front tables was occupied by EDA Tim Burke! This became our home base for the evening. The 'burns were already setting up as we arrived; we were fortunate to be able to enjoy their sound check and talk to them briefly before the opening band had to set up. I talked to John a bit on his choice of instruments, and introduced him to my daughter -- who promptly announced that she couldn't stand John's Fender bass. :-) Well, it wasn't as bad as it sounds; I let them talk basses for a few minutes. Tim and I managed to corner Steve and inform him that he was #8 on the Billboard songwriter chart; he was pleased (though not overwhelmed -- consider the source! :-) To my surprise, everyone else drifted away at that point and I got to chat with him for a few minutes. I requested Silver Lining (which he said was a great tune to open with) and we discussed touring, audiences, and songwriting. They do NOT use a set list, even when they opened for Jewel; Steve claims to be able to figure out an audience quickly and choose songs appropriately. He was highly impressed by my appreciation of a couple of his songs; I guess not many people come up to him and tell him that "Holliston Street" moves them to tears... :-) As we were waiting for the opening band to start, I hung out in the back and watched Steve and Liz flirting :-) My view was suddenly blocked by a skinny Canadian -- Dan Stark! As I pumped his hand, he introduced me to his friend Kris who had come along for the show. Now we were complete for the night; at this point, EDAs outnumbered everyone else in the bar.... We were somewhat amused by the huge drum set wielded by the band; more equipment than carried by the entire Rugburns crew. There was a separate case for each piece and cymbal... I split for a brief snack while the opening band played, and made it back in time to watch Dan and Tom shaking their heads over the levels put out by the band into their DATs. I was glad I had something to plug my ears with; 40-plus years of listening to loud music hasn't yet damaged my hearing, thanks to ear plugs. At last, the band fled the stage and the 'burns took a paltry few minutes to move their equipment into place. At long last, Steve, John, and Stinky were ready to play. To my immense joy, they did indeed open with Silver Lining, then moved on into a somewhat restrained set of ballads. Steve wasn't kidding, though - -- he had figured out the crowd. I can't produce a complete set list at this minute (Tim? Dan?) but they did mostly newer tunes (familiar to those who have listened to them in the last year), only occasionally dipping back in to songs recognizable from the albums. The Kilkenny tune and the wonderfully funny Irish folk tune both made appearances as the band rocked into their set. Steve was in superb form both vocally and instrumentally, with John bouncing and hopping more than usual as he played. Stinky was brilliant as usual, though he lost a couple of drumsticks with his zealous acrobatics. Performance highlights: the aforementioned Irish tunes, Now's Not The Right Time For Love, War, Mama, YWMFM (no intro), and of course Fence Around My Heart. On the latter, Stinky came out into the audience for his exciting percussion solo and Nancy (sitting to my right) held out a beer bottle for him to play. It made a great sound for the moment it lasted before exploding into a million pieces. We managed to scoop them up before anyone was hurt. Steve also did a nice stage dive during one tune, landing on his back mere inches from my seat on the floor. Mia and Kaili claimed drumsticks from the show, Mia only getting hers because she was stronger than me. :-) Of course, there was an improv about tipping the bartender, which I'm not going to post the refrain out of consideration for the under-18 list members :-) and of course Toledo was worked into one or two other songs as well. All the EDAs seemed to be having a good time; I know Tom was, because I could hear him singing over the PA! I was only mildly distracted by Sharron, who was enjoying my obvious good mood and leaned over occasionally to mess with my hair. It's an EDA thing -- everyone wants to share the love [er, (tm) JenAngel]. :-) Everyone behind us was enjoying the "cheerleader chick" dancing crazily, and everyone in front of us (i.e., the Rugburns) seemed to be enjoying themselves mightily. Steve played a song dedicated to Liz, and inserted some radically different lyrics clearly describing the one and only Liz herself! I checked, and she hadn't fainted as far as I could tell. At last, Steve announced the last song as Dick's Automotive; then to his and everyone else's surprise he started playing Me and Eddie Vedder. He stopped, apologized, then started the song over and played it anyway... Dick's became the final final song, although it wasn't the full 20-minute version I enjoyed at Indy last December. And then it was over. We hung around till they cleared the bar, and finally made a caravan with Shelly to the Econo-Lodge where the fab Morales family had reserved a few hotel rooms for an after-show party. I wasn't in much shape to party, as it was getting close to 3 AM by then. I did sit around and talk with Mia, Tim, Dan, Tom, Nancy, and Kris until it became obvious that I wasn't going to be awake when the band stumbled in. I tottered off and actually got a blissful few hours of sleep. The group re-assembled slightly before noon, checked out (thank you Tom and Nancy -- did we contribute enough to take care of the bill?) and began to separate. We did run into Steve at the front lobby, and he regaled us with a summary of his night's adventures (cheap beer and wacky people) before we bid him adieu; some of them would be seeing him again that evening of course. Dan and Kris headed back to Windsor, and the rest of us returned to Liz & Shelly's. Several of the group took long-awaited showers and cleaned up. Mia was next to depart, having things to do at home. I joined the stragglers in the living room, savoring the last few minutes before I too had to hit the road for home and other duties. I did find time to return the favor by messing with Sharron's hair under the guise of massaging her head and neck :-) But then, alas, it was time to leave. Regrettably, Nancy and Kaili were taking a nap, but I bade farewell to the remaining EDAs and then departed. Making good time, I arrived home about 5 PM and had time for a nap before rejoining Dan and Tim on IRC a bit later, helping them through their EDA withdrawal. Sadly, Dan's friend Kris suffered a robbery while his apartment was vacant, but everyone else made it home without undue mishap. Thanks again to Liz & Shelly and their family for enduring the crowd of people; and most especially to those amazing Morales folks for their total commitment to EDA philosophy. We could buy hot dogs, brats, veggie kabobs(Erin), hamburgers, etc. chips, potato salad, well you get the idea. The people form the KC metro area would be responsible for buying the food, etc. when the money gets in! This would kind of be the GET TO KNOW YOU dinner. We could all get together a game of softball or frisbee, you know that fun park stuff....When the sun went down, we could all travel to the plaza..(this is a well known historic shopping area)Everybody could go back to the hotel or their homes that night. SATURDAY-We would all meet at World's of Fun and Ocean's of Fun at 10 am, when the parks open. World's of Fun is the ammusemant park, it is home to the world's second largest wooden rollercoaster....Ocean's of Fun has a wave pool, huge slides, etc...1 day passes to both parks average about $40 dollars a piece, but if you think about it you would be ther 14 hours..or $1.42 per hour each park.Anyway, we could all BBQ for lunch there or whatever. World's of Fun has Saturday night fireworks so that would be a plus. There is definatly 14 hours worth of fun at both the parks. The parks close at midnight! SO after that day of fun was over everybody would go home(hotels, etc.) SUNDAY-Everybody could meet for breakfast at Shoney's or somewhere with a breakfast bar..we could all say our goodbyes and we would just depart from there. That would put you out of KC around 12:00 if you were traveling back somewhere.. *******SO, I am asking if you have even the littlest interest in being part of this that you email me, if you do not want to go to all three days that is ok, just let me know of any interest, so I know whether or not to persue this!*************** THANks, MANDY:) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 May 1997 23:02:39 -0400 From: "Miguel A. Greenfield and Loveable lawyer Larry and Larry the EDA kookybaka poster design are ONE person! So now, Mandy pops up in a surfside bar in San Diego and I remember Mandy being somewhere else and ordering EDA guitar picks for Jewel's returning home present. Is this another case of multiple identities or are there really two Mandys (instead of four Larrys)??<< Well, the Mandy's are most certainly different people. The Larrys? Well, let me just say that I know Larry "Graywolf" Kookybaka "Sue Em" Greenfield, I've slept on Larry "Graywolf" Kookybaka "Sue Em" Greenfield's furniture and used Larry "Graywolf" Kookybaka "Sue Em" Greenfield's shower and assorted porcelain fixtures -- and I'm not even sure how many folks he has in that demented head of his! ;-) Let me introduce you to my brother Larry, my other brother Larry and yet my other brother Larry (from left to right, of course)... He (they) is (are) the poster child(ren) for EDA extremism (and generosity)... *** Folks are largely neglecting to use the prefix "NJC" (for No Jewel Content) in their posts. As King of All NJC, I feel obligated to bring this up BEFORE folks get upset and share their discontent! The Jewel list is unique in that it often wanders off from the namesake subject from time to time, so after much pained discussion, we came up with several acronyms that should be used, the most important of which is "NJC"...this way, folks can filter out any non-Jewel material automatically. It's a polite thing to do, so please use it! More obscure is the acronym "TDHBC" (Those Damn Harris Brothers Content)... and if you remember that one, you automatically qualify for the list's Senior Citizen Discount Program! - -- Dennis Harris, wondering how many Adrians there are anyway? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 May 1997 21:52:51 -0700 From: "Larry G." I had an e-mail database crash last week, and I suspect I lost some information. If I have left out anyone, or information needs to be corrected, please e-mail me immediately! The following have donated a total of 15 pints as of today: 1) Dennis Harris, MA 2) Mark Nissley, PA 3) Alan "MrBB" Bershaw, CT 4) Amelia "Mia" Vlah, OH 5) Lisa Eastham, NV 6) Greg Micek, NV 7) Adam Spiegel, PA 8) Julie Bristol, WA 9) Earl Bartlett , NJ 10) Michelle ???, VA 11) Stephen Horowitz, ME 12) Tammy Campbell, NJ 13) Terrence R. Williams, GA 14) Richard "Akira" Chang, NJ 15) John-Eric Stevens, CA I think one of the responses I may have lost was from "TUFF TIE" from Israel (?)... does anyone have his e-mail addy? Several folks reported doing other community service during the month: 1) Kira Green, STATE??? 2) Bruce ???, SD So, if you want to participate, please do so this week. It's a great way to reach out to your community and other human beings in a very important way. If you can't give blood, but can do other community service, that works as well, and I'll add your name to the list. I will be finalizing the greeting card for the group effort next week, and will forward it to Jewel shortly thereafter. I hope to hear from more list members this week! - -- Dennis Harris To help explain the purpose of this project, below is an abridged version of the original drive post: ************************************ Jewel routinely requests that gifts NOT be given to her, but for her angels instead to help one another -- and others -- in typical EDA fashion. You know, a large part of being an EDA is not only talking the talk, but "walking the walk". We support each other, and enjoy each other's company immensely (if you haven't yet, you will one day!). Being an EveryDay Angel also means helping your fellow human beings, in every way possible. And while some of us may not have the finances to support a donation program, we all have something that is precious to over three million folks in the United States every year -- blood plasma. What could be more personal and giving of one's self than donating blood so that others may live? Talk about the ultimate in giving yourself to others! You actually become part of another human being. Think about that concept for a minute... And on the practical side, it certainly fits the suggestion that we should find something that anyone can participate in (and afford)! ;-) So, here's an EDA challenge for the entire list: Donate a unit of blood to your local blood bank during the month of May, and watch your aura glow two full levels brighter (guaranteed or your blood back in a cup)! Then forward me your name and location, and if you want, your photo. I'll add donors names and photos to a very special birthday card for Jewel and see that she personally gets it upon her return from Europe. I imagine this will simply again confirm what she already knows about her EDAs: we are indeed SPECIAL SOULS WHO GET THE POINT OF HER MESSAGE! :-) Every three seconds someone needs blood. Approximately 40,000 units (pints) of blood are required each and every day in the United States. Your donation gives an opportunity for survival to accident, burn and cancer patients. Now this might be a total stranger you save. It might be a friend, family member or another EDA. It might even be yourself! Annually, over 12 million units of blood are donated to benefit over 3.6 million patients. And certain types of blood supplies routinely run dangerously low. Frozen plasma lasts a year. Refrigerated blood has a shelf life of 42 days. Some blood components last only a week. You can routinely safely donate a pint of whole blood every eight weeks. But you've got to donate that first pint to get started! And you'd be surprised at how good it feels, knowing that you're unselfishly making a difference. I mistakenly thought for a long time that a blood sugar condition prevented me from giving blood, until I discovered it was only the lead in my *ss that prevented me from giving blood! ;-) Now, I've met over 300 of ya'll face to face over the past year, and I expect to hear from all of you. For the 600 I have yet to meet, I'd love to add your names to this project. Let's do it! It's the most personal donation anyone can make. And here's the Harris tip of the day: if you're smart, you can get free cookies, orange juice and a sandwich as well from the blood bank (which saves on your food bill)...which enables you to save up for the next EDA gathering, making you happier, healthier and wise(r)...which creates MORE blood to donate...which...well, you get the picture! More information on blood donation and a listing of nationwide centers is available at the web site: http://www.americasblood.org Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions! And thanks for considering participation in this drive. ************************************ ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #391 ***************************
