It took a Harris Bros. from Virginia to find the secret location of Starry Night. The city is surrounded by cabbage fields. It is famous for its barbecue made from a piece of meat called tri tip. It has an airport in the city but the one at Vandenburg is not open to the public. They shoot rockets from Vandenburg Air Force Base. When they do, they close the road to our beach. We should be OK for the weekend. Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts is in this town and their theater program rivals productions I have seen on Broadway. Robin Williams was a student there and spent time on our beach. Travelers going north can stop in Solvang for a danish, a Danish themed town. If you are traveling south, stop in San Luis Obisbo and walk down bubble gum alley. It is covered wall to wall with used gum made into art. Guadelupe is near by and has a beach with a beautiful sand dune beach. Most people pass Santa Maria never seeing the secret beach at Point Sol. It is hidden by a mountain that you must drive over first. First of all, I read (a while ago, I know) someone's message about the lack of POY for a period of well, way too long. Take heart, my friend, there is hope. I have survived POYless for about two or three months now. Not only that, I have been without my U2 Joshua Tree, the first from both Weezer and the Refreshments, Patrick Ball's Celtic Harp and REM's Automatic For The People. The point is, my will has been drained. I can't stand it anymore. Please, someone help me. If anyone has ANY live tapes of Jewel, U2 or Ben Folds Five (just threw that one in there. Can you blame me?), Please e-mail me. All my tapes are missing J-cards, but I'm willing to send money for blanks and postage if that's a problem. Next, before I start whining (more than I am already), Does anybody know about the line-up for The Lilith Fair at Great Woods. Some top 40 pop station my sister listens to tried to redeem itself by playing Jewel, and the smoothvoiced, let's-play-some-techno-now DJ paused in his bad jokes to say she'd be playing. He got most of the others right, so I'm hopeful. Anybody know anything about it? Also, Someone was trashing Billy Corgan. I personally think the new stuff (most fast MC songs, anything past that) rots, but I do see some parallels. Both he and Jewel have stuck to their music even though they've been in situations where everyone else is doing completely different stuff. The Pumpkins started off in the Chicago Punk scene. Instead of becoming punkified (nothing wrong with punk!) they continued to write 4 and 5 min. songs. Anyone who likes punk should ask themselves: How many 5 min. songs do Bad Religion or the Ramones have. Two? Three? Punk thrives on 2-3 min songs. Also, Corgan writes a lot of sociopolitical numbers, sure, but he also writes sweet sweet and luna, or a porcelina. Listen to those songs. They are very peaceful, or mourning for lost peace. Another thing. James Iha is a great songwriter, when he can convince Billy to hand over the soundboard. Yet another thing. I have very little money right now, and music has always been my #1 thing. I love so many bands, and want to have their albums, but have no money for CD's or Cassetes. So I was thinking,"Just buy blanks and trade." Would anybody be interested in setting up a sort of pool, in which people would send money for blanks and postage (good idea, first saw it on this list) to each other. In this way, people could increase their chances of trading with other traders. If some demented trader out ther hates Jewel, but has that Rage boot you've been searching for, someone in the group might have something YOU don't like, but the Rage guy does. Take a minute to sort out my run-on sentences. It does make a little sense, right? If it's just me being a freakboy, oh well. Otherwise, e-mail me offlist. I think you are just gonna have to pick a date. There positives and negatives for all of us with all dates, so someone will eventually have to say, "This is when it is." As long as a weekend is included, I will be there. Let's decipher the meaning in these hints.... >It is off of Highway 101. Probably meaning it is in one of the few areas where the 1 merges with the 101 >Rocket scientist could be our only problem. An obvious refernce to Vandenberg Air Force Base >Sand dunes are close by but not on our beach. An obvious reference to Pismo Dunes >If you are traveling north, you can stop for a real danish. These two don't help me at this time... >Tri-tip. Santa Maria >If you live north of Pea Soup Anderson Buellton >or south of Madonna's Inn In San Luis Obispo There are airports in San Kuis Obispo, Santa Maria and at Vandenberg. Obviously, we can't fly into Vandenberg. I think Santa Maria's airport is too small to handle major commercial traffic, so that would point us closer to San Luis Obispo. After all of the above, I'll guess Avila Beach. It has been a few years since I have been to this lovely beach, but I believe it fits many of the above clues. I am in the right vicinity, I believe. Although the more I look at I may shift my answer down towards Pt. Sal State Beach. That area would be closer to Vandenberg and is more centrally located between Pea Soup Anderson's and Madonna's Inn. Although it is technically off the 1 and not the 101 ;) Also, I believe there is more farming around Santa Maria than there is around San Luis Obispo which would account for the cabbage. Hi to those interested in the online Jewel Chronology & Performance Project, I've been digging up a lot of new info over the past few months & Adam has added most of it to the online version now. Some older confusing sections are now fixed. I was confused myself regarding the end of the residency tour in NYC & the POY release gigs in San Diego. On the rough draft of the early Jewel history recently posted, I stated that the NYC Ludow Street Cafe gig & the POY release gigs happenned on the same day. This was mistaken. The POY release gigs actually occurred 2 days after the album was released. Anyway, that (among other things) is cleared up now on the chronology. Also many older shows that were missing completely on previous versions are now included. I was surprised to discover that 2 shows slipped by everyone on this list. In March of 96, she returned to Homer & did two sold out gigs at Homer High School (as well as an Anchorage gig a few days later.) I don't remember anyone mentioning these gigs at the time. For those interested in seeing where Jewel has performed past, present & future visit the Jewel Chronology & Performance project at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jchrono.htm As always, additions, corrections & suggestions welcome. Also anyone with the chance to see Patty Griffin on her current small headline tour, DO IT!. Just saw her again Friday night & she was very powerful & pouring out more incredible new tunes. I'm not a huge Springsteen fan but she ended her encores with a mesmerizing cover of "Stolen Car". As always it was a pleasure to see Patty & the setup in Hamden was great. The front row was occupied by Rachel, Erica, Ted, Jerry Zigmont AmyJo & myself. It took place in a little barn & you could hear a pin drop during her songs. :-) Something about silence that certainly enhances this kind of performance! Best wishes! Go somewhere, like a park or something. There's a park near my town. PLEASE EVERYONE: If you wanna go or you wanna help me, PLEASE get in touch with me!! I am still a Newbie and I still live with my strict parents and I am very inexperienced with planning these things, so Puh-leeze help me! Thank you. You've probably all read the stories of the NJ EDA gathering by now. But how many of you know the other great adventure had by two particular EDAs that weekend? It all started around 9:00 PM on Sunday night... Dennis Harris and I had just left the home of Rob & Tammy, on our way north for the 5 hour drive back to Massachusettes. We cruised along to the Garden State Parkway, and on to the NJ Turnpike discussing all the things that had occured over the past two days. We were enjoying ourselves when, suddenly, swarms of automobiles zoomed up previously unseen on-ramps, and clogged the highway with traffic. We patiently waited for almost an hour and a half just to go 25 feet! (Well, more like 2 and half miles.) We determined that construction was the source of the jam, but it mysteriously disappeared seconds after we cleared it. Very suspicious. It was now around 11:30 and we needed gas, so we pulled into a rest stop. We used the facilities, then bought some snacks for the road. As we were getting gas, Dennis asked the attendent to check the oil in his car. The man fumbled around a bit, then said he could not find it. Dennis and I glanced at each other. Could this man be trying to keep us from getting oil? What motives could he have? Quickly, Dennis jumped into action. With one smooth motion, he removed the dipstick and wiped it clean. Then, deftly, he placed it back in, and removed it again, only this time checking the level of oil. Strangely, the level was fine. Was this man a member of an anti-EDA group, or just a simple gas station attendent lost in the darkness of the New Jersey night? There was no way to tell. We pulled out of the rest area around midnight, and headed towards NYC and home. The ride to the George Washington Bridge was a smooth one, and we began to relax a bit. Therein lay our worst mistake! As we entered the city, we didn't notice the black BMW trailing us... ...to be continued! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 May 1997 21:33:06 -0400 (EDT) From: JewelzEDA@aol.com Subject: Re: KC EDA GATHERING DEFINETLY!! The obvious solution would be for people to read the instructions when they join, but as we all know for some that is too much to ask. So I have a suggestion that may help a bit. Seems most people are unhappy with the volume of mail they receive. I'm not sure who maintains the 'main' page for list info but if everyone who had a page on how to join would warn people in advance about the number of messages they may be receiving I think it would help. - --> Just take five minutes out of your day and rub somebody the right way. =) The Rugburns http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/8229 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 21:57:14 -0400 (EDT) From: "Kellyann D. My husband Joe and I are big Jewel fans and have tickets to the concert at the PNC Bank Arts Center in August. Last night, being a brand new AOL user at home, I tried to get into the Everyday Angels chat room at 10:00pm like you list on the web page. I searched fruitlessly for over an hour, even venturing into some other chat rooms to try and get some help as to how to find you. I was unsuccessful. Is there any way you could send me an e-mail explaining on how to get into the chat room? What Joe and I are trying to find out is whether or not a video tape and CD is still available of Jewel's performance as Dorothy in the staged performance of "The Wizard Of OZ" that was broadcast last year(I think) from Lincoln Center on A&E. I am really interested in finding this - please help! I look forward to hearing from you!
