My friend went to see them at some small bar in Dekalb, Illinois before they got real popular. Unfortuneatley, it was a bar, and she and my other friend couln't get in, but Mario, the drummer (I think) for the Wallflowers was especially cool. He even tried to sneek them in. :) They watched from outside, cause it had a huge glass window, and after the concert, they got to meet all the Wallflowers. The signed a poster, and Mario gave them a hug before they left. :) Anyway, they wouldn't play any Bob Dylan songs, but ironically enough, the played some "The Band" songs. I'm new to the list and I have a few questions. First off, does Jewel actually read this list? I read in an article that Jewel has an email address but rarely gets a chance to answer mail (totally understandable of course, geesh). What I'm getting at is, does Jewel respond to anyone's email? One thing I'd like to talk about, and I'm sure has been mentioned on this list before, is exactly what attracts people to Jewel and her music. For some this is a simple answer. She's a wonderful song writer and singer. This is a given, but I feel the attraction to Jewel is much deeper then just another good song on the radio. The reason for me saying this is my musical tastes. I do not listen to top 40, popular music, or easier listening type music. I listen to hardcore/straight edge bands mainly, and maybe like 2 other bands outside of that category. When I listen to Jewel sing, and I see her face on TV, there's something really strange that happens to me. I see her as someone that totally understands what's going on around her, which I feel so many people tend to overlook. Jewel is real, and I think that's the best thing about her. There's something in her eyes that assures me that she understands what I'm feeling, even though I'm not really able to express myself in words. I'd like to expand on this some more, and I'm sure I will, I just can't think straight right now. I guess I'm a freak, but oh well. If others feel like responding and talking further about this, please email me. I agree that (Still Life) Talking = would be an excellent place to start for someone curious about Pat Metheny. If you = can make it through "It's Just Talk" without singing along, you might not have a puls= e. Just as good, but not as all encompassing, is the new album with Charlie Haden = (finally!) called "Beyond the Missouri Sky". It's strange but I feel as you do; nothing touches me quite as deep as = Jewel and Pat (and for me, Dave Matthews). I can't really bring myself to think = of Pat's music as jazz, though I have a respectable jazz collection and love the music = dearly. It's just that jazz has been plagued with a history of over-categorization and= stylistic apartheids. Pat's music, on the other hand, is what I consider to be mus= ic diluted to its purist form: unconstrained by style or ego. (I mean, he's got = chops to die for yet he has never recorded anything that was just a vehicle for fretboard = acrobatics.) For me, the same holds true for Dave Matthews and Jewel. I don't believe= any of these three artists (and I never use the term loosely) would ever create = anything that they felt was not true to themselves. Gerry, the Canadian ED eh who's handling the northern distribution of Jewel's Tiny Lights tour poetry books, sent me mine and it arrived today, May 23! How's that for well-timed?! It's beautiful. It even has a picture of Jewel sitting in an doorway in Oslo, Norway -- so we can see where she is today on her birthday. This is definitely something to treasure for Jewel fans -- and a big percentage of the sales goes to the James Paul Kalanick Trust. I was truly gratified by the positive and enthusiastic reaction of so many EDA's to our star-gift....culminating in Jewel's lovely note to us. I'm glad we were able to put a smile on her face - returning in kind what she usually does for us! - and I must say, I also feel a great sense of relief that the star thing went over so well with her. So, I want to personally and profusely thank and acknowledge Alan, Adam and Amy (does anyone else detect a pattern here?) for their efforts in making Jewel of the North happen so successfully. Of course, I had no doubt that she would love the foundation, blood donor drive and other acts of compassion that were demonstrated today. Those were by far and away the most important activities of the day. And I want to express my admiration for everyone who participated in these events. I was wondering if we should share some of the ways we each marked today. I didn't (and can't) donate blood, but I did make a contribution to the JPK Trust. I also did some work with a woman I used to write speeches for, who overcame breast cancer and started a foundation here in Canada which funds research into breast cancer, as well providing various methods of support for breast cancer victims and their families. I'd be really interested in reading about what everyone else has done. Have a great Jewel birthday everyone, and a terrific weekend. Gerry P.S. During my overseas trip, I spent one day in Zurich, and you will all be interested to know that about one quarter of the entire female population of the city bears a strong resemblance to Jewel. I was doing double takes all day long! I was ready for some of the cases of Jerusalem Syndrome that I ran across in Israel, but the Swiss Miss Syndrome in Zurich threw me for a loop! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 20:12:14 EDT From: westleyd@juno.com (Westley Dent) Subject: Re: Happy Birthday!
