THE car... it was Dan's mighty mustang, so i witnessed both Rob's and Dan's mustangs.. great cars guys... In the car of course were the usuals, Tim and Mia. For some odd reason Paul Kim was sitting on top of Dan's trunk and Dan of course scared the hell out of him and pretended to start driving and that got Paul's attention pretty quick ;-) We were following a few other cars and the lead car was just going to the bank to get some money and of course you see the entire line up of cars following, following that car into the bank, hehe, then you see all the cars exiting the bank... (you gotta love these little stories i put in don't ya ;-)) Finally we get to the IHOP restaurant and we were 35 minutes late... so we lost our reservations... so we had to go in groups of 4-6 people... I sat with Rachel, Chris and Mia.. Our waitress asked us if we were going to Six Flags and we replied that we had gone the day before, then she began asking all sorts of questions, where we were from and what we had planned for today... etc.... hmm, i don't *think* she was looking for a tip.. no way... impossible ;-) So we answered all her questions and she was wondering why we were all from different places, i don't even think she knew where Toronto was, but anyway (ok, i'm taking this Canadian thing TOO far ;-)) So Rachel kindly told her the story of the Jewel mailing list, after telling her all the details she replied, "to bad there isn't a Stone Temple Pilots Mailing list" don't know if those were the exact words, maybe she was saying too bad they don't do that for the STP mailing list.. doesn't matter :-) Either way i thought she was gonna think we were nuts.. but she didn't which was kinda cool, even though she was a little too perky.. ;-) We proceded to eat our breakfast.. guess what i had ;-) of course, Canadian back bacon, with eggs and pancakes... I witnessed the most syrup applied to a pancake by Mia, she must have poured a gallon of the strawberry syrup on hers :-) Mmmm how did that taste ;-) We had some good conversation and then started tickling Stephanie by poking the air.. strange phenomenon that girl has.. :-) We finished eating and then it was time for Dan, Tim and Mia to leave us, i had the greatest time with Dan at the safari and the greatest time with Tim following him aimlessly through the six flags park and the greatest time talking with Mia at the Campell Inn and at breakfast, THANKS so much guys, you're the greatest, hope you guys come with me and Dan to catch Tara Maclean on June 7th in toronto.. :-) can't wait.. So almost everyone was done eating breakfast and were heading back to Rob and Tammy's to get ready for the paintball wars, so everyone is pulling out and i was left outside with no ride.. because i came with Dan and he had already left.. luckily Dennis, Tom Proven and Rob were still in eating breakfast and discussing high profile things that i wasn't able to see, if i had, they would have to kill me ;-) So i hitched a ride with them.. :-) Now we're all back at the Campell residence and people were getting ready for the paintball extravaganza headed by team Harris.. :-) part b coming soon :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 14:56:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Nick Godbout Subject: Re: Jewel Midi Files? Sunday (Part B) Ok, Dennis and the rest of the Paint ballers were getting ready to go do their thang, i did not attend because i wasn't really into it, i needed to rest a little before my looon train ride home and i knew if i decided to take on the Harris Clan then i would be dead tired ... :-) And i'm pretty sure the others who attended explained it well... :-) (and aren't you guys lucky i didn't go, or else there would be at least another two pages from me ;-)) So we were enjoying the entertainment provided by the Tom Tom Bros. and friend Mitch who were using Tammy's daughter as a play toy :-) I really don't think that Katarina will ever tire out when she is playing... Tom O'Brien and Mitch were getting tired quick ;-) all in all we had a good time laughing and joking around before the Toms and Mitch, and Jared, Thirza and Steve left. And Proven, too bad Rob wasn't there to witness what you were doing ;-) just kidding :-) So me Tammy and Rob were just watching some T.V. i think Tammy told you the movie we were watching, *ahem* It was a Mike Myers movie, (Canadian ;-)) we had a good laugh and i was continuing to play on the guitar very badly :-) then me a Rob went for a little shopping excursion and that was that, we played on the computer some more and then it was time that the paintballers came back to the house... they were tired but they loved it, Dennis was gloating that his team was undefeated or only lost once.. gotta love that Dennis, but he did give credit to the TEDinator, or Berberian the Barbarian :-) He was the most feared out of the group :-) We ordered Chinese food and were relishing the final moments of this great gathering... Tammy was trying to figure out how much all of the food would cost but she was off by just a *little* ;-) Don't worry Tammy, we still love you and we know that you were really exhausted :-) We then proceeded to take a million pictures :-) we broke the couch and then tried on the other sitting utensil to see if it will hold us all ;-) If these pictures get out in the public eye, i will go into hiding ;-) By this time Rachel, Erica and Ted leave, and we are left with Dennis, Chris, Rob, Tammy, Me and Farr... Dennis *says* he will leave soon but he stayed another 2 hrs at the least just talking and sharing stories, thanks Dennis for sharing those great stories :-) i had a great time listening.. :-) So to keep this a little shorter, Dennis and Chris leave and we are left with the two remaining people, yours truly and Farr funny that the two people who came first leave last.. ironic in a way... well, we all go upstairs and check to see email and who's in the chat rooms, we found Tim Burke already home and i talked to him for awhile and then when we finished checking all the mail and stuff we headed off to sleep... I hugged Tammy before i went to sleep because i knew i wouldn't get the chance when i left because i had to get up at 5:20am, Tammy, you are the greatest, i hope i will get to meet you more often :-) The next morning, Rob kicks me to get up, i really feel bad that i had to make Rob wake up so early, THANKS Rob, you too are the greatest, you have a wonderful family and i hope to see you soon also.. In short, i get on my train and 14hrs later i'm home... I'm feeling a little saddened now after writing all this, because its sort of the end to my great adventure experience, i'd just like to thank everyone for coming and to the Campell family for opening up their home to everyone.. i love you all :-) from you very own crazy canuck... We were waiting for awhile and actually Rachel and Amy were waiting a little longer than us cuz we cut in line *ahem* sorry we were at the washrooms and then regained our place in line thanks to Rachel and Amy ;-) There were many problems with this ride, it was announced that it wasn't running well and it would be awhile till it reopened, but we were ditermined to wait anything out considering this was gonna be our only ride.. Then when it finally got back to working there were these three somewhat intimidating people who cut the entire line and just walked in, well me and Tim thought we could take them but thought against it later, we didn't want to hurt anyone... ;-) Finally we get in and then there are more delays, it seems that those people who cut in line were being confronted by securtiy guards, first there was a somewhat big security guard waiting around for this bigger security guard, and then they went to talk to the people in question and nothing came of it, the people got on the ride and it was a big waste of time... :-) just like this little story :-) Well, after that little experience, Rachel and Amy went on their own way again and us four were wondering around again following Tim... We finally meet up with Paul, Jared, Thirza, and Lauren, and later on Tegan... they ate some food. Me and Adam were really tired and were ready to go back to Tammy's, so it was about time to meet up with everybody and talk to see what was gonna happen, so some decided to go and some decided to stay and go on a few more rides.. On the ride back i didn't sit in the back seat of Paul's car anymore.. but there were still people waving at me for some odd reason.. ;-) just kidding :-) Well we finally got to Rob and Tammy's and we started ordering pizzas, all this was already said and i'll just add some things i saw :-) Ok, Paul and Farr were playing nintendo, Rachel and Erica and some others were on the computer chatting, it was already said about the "pass the Chelsea" game on the phone :-) Tim was battling sleep and Dan actually slept for a bit but then i think he smelled canadian beer which i *think* the Tom Tom bros bought :-) thanks Tom, which ever bought it :-) and then Dan awoke and started partying with the rest of us :-) Of course, all the conversations were about, i wish i lived in Canada, i wish i worked in Canada, i wish i .... well maybe not, i do have selective hearing :-) I was having a pleasant conversation with Mia, she's a groovy lady ;-) We were talking about my so called accent, i don't have an accent, all of you guys do... :-) Rob and Tammy were patrolling everything ;-) Dennis and Adam and others were just talking for awhile, which isn't surprising, Dennis can talk, and force you to reply ;-) Later, there was Poetry reading from Stephanie, it was very emotional, she can read poetry people, i thought it was an added bonus to an EDA gathering, very cool Steph :-) and then we discussed the proposal from Stephanie to the EDAF about the National Endowement of Arts, i think this will become available as time goes on... Dennis had a great idea using the talking stick..., but he abused it well ;-) to end the Saturday, we watched the most hilarious video from the Hot Dog Fest, i'm so jealous that i couldn't make it there also.. Steve (born in Canada) Poltz and Stinky were absolutely hilarious :-) I was ready to crash and sleep so i decided to go to sleep cuz we had to get up early to go to breakfast... the night ended at around 3:30am... My sleeping arrangments you ask, well there was an addition to our little group, non other than Dan the Man Stark joined our little group, i was very happy to share a room with three list vets :-) even if one of them was Dennis ;-) and again we hid his pillow from him :-D what fun.. :-) Ok, i will shortly talk about Sunday and that's all people :-) hope you didn't mind the length of all these :-) (your very own crazy canuck) Gianny ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 16:59:51 +0000 From: jnj@mail.better.net Subject: songwriters??? Hey there angels!!! I'm new to the list but a long time fan of Jewel (summer '95). Please allow me to share a mystical Jewel experience with you. The last time that I saw her perform was on Thursday, March 6, 1997 at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto (Rugburns opened!!!). Incidentally, for those of you in attendance, I was the guy dressed all in black who was among the seven who went up onstage to present Jewel w/ water colored roses. During her "everyday angel"/"down with cynicism" spiel I felt touched a little deeper than the last time I'd heard it. I just figured it was because I was a little excited about the whole flower thing. Anyway, after the show I was understandably light-headed, again I assumed it was from the incredible experience of the night. That Saturday night I began to realize that there was something a little different about things. For the first time in all my five years of guitar playing, I wrote a song*. Two weeks later, that song and another were done and I am still quite proud of them. Since then I've written about one song per week. (I'm writing my ninth now.) NOW HERE COMES THE PART WHERE EVERYONE STOPS READING AND LAUGHS AT ME FOR BEING AS NAIVE AS SOMEONE THAT I MYSELF WOULD HAVE LAUGHED AT ONLY A FEW MOTHS AGO: I swear to this day that for a few days after the concert, I was living with one of Jewel's angels. I don't know why it followed me home, it just did. However, there was a definite change in my creative flow after almost a week after the experience. I think that was when I got my own angel: not nearly as proficient as Jewel's, but definitely trying as hard. *I've been taking lessons in jazz for a few years now and in all that time I have never created two consecutive bars that didn't embarass me. THIS was really an accomplishment. So my point is, are there any other songwriters out there? If so, what made YOU start? Who inspires you? WHAT inspires you? Harvard Square Cambridge, MA The first time I ever saw Patty Griffin was at The Bull Run in Shirley a little while back with a wonderful group of EDAs- Alan, Amy Jo, Ted, Rachel, Tessia, Adam (I just figured out you're Adam Longfellow of Pieces of Jewel website fame- took me long enough to put 2 and 2 together!!), Phil, Chris and myself. At that time I thought Patty was impressive. What I probably remembered most about that show was the loudness of the performance and somewhat heaviness of the style and sound. After picking up Patty's CD (her songs weren't as heavy handed there) and studying the lyrics to her songs, I felt I had to see Patty again live. So in the much more intimate setting at Club Passim in Harvard Square this evening, the Snyders, Bill Bartholomew and myself went to see Patty play a set that was more powerful than I remembered at the Shirley show. This evening she played a whole slough of softer songs and tried out a whole bunch of new songs in front of us, and even had a friend play guitar for her. And to top it off, we were at the table RIGHT IN FRONT of Patty! I was close enough to reach out and touch Patty's feet if I wanted, and at least a number of us could smell Patty's fragrant aloe hand lotion (I'm guessing it was Vaseline Intensive Care with aloe). Moreover, as she was singing, often she would move away from the microphone and we were close enough to still hear the chorus she was still singing, but wasn't being broadcast. We had received our orders for food just a few minutes before Patty hit the stage at 7:15pm or so both Bill and I each had a big plate of fries in front of us. Mine stayed full- I wasn't eating because I wanted to watch Patty. Well, up comes Patty with her trademarked bottle of Evian bottled water and right after the second song, she turns to Bill and myself and comments, "Wow, those are HUGE plates of french fries." We offerred her some, but she politely smiled and said no thanks, stating that they mess up her voice. Then throughout the show, she would make comments about the french fries, saying "Boy, those fries look good, are they good?" To which both Bill and I would nod and say yup. :) Then late in her set when she noticed I wasn't eating the fries, she turned to me, smiled, and said "You can eat those french fries while I'm singing you know. You can chew and listen at the same time." I laughed and told her "thanks I'll do that" and nodded. Wow. I love Patty now. :) :) :) She's so COOL and totally NICE!!! *sigh* :) My favorite of the new songs was probably "Good Bye," a very soft beautiful tune. Then after the show when I got my CD autographs, she remembered me and wrote on my CD booklet "Enjoy the fries!" She is just too COOL!!! :) In addition to the wonderful intimacy of the Kendall Cafe with Tara MacLean (where we had front table seats yet again), this experience at Club Passim with Patty just couldn't be beat. We all had a wonderful time, Patty was just wonderful, her song set was very varied between faster beats and slow songs and she experimented with new songs and had an old friend who had helped with the arrangement on her CD on stage playing guitar for two of her songs. It was an absolutely breathtaking performance for me, and to anyone who loves Patty, this show was absolutely one that shouldn't have been missed. I know I'll remember this one until the day I die. *BIG SIGH* Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 23:52:44 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: NJC: Friends of REBECCA A SMITH - please read!! We achieved real consensus that we didn't want to inundate Jewel with conventional gifts, and so we're commemorating the day with spiritual and generous personal and collective acts. We know this is more in line with her wishes, and this being the real gift, will no doubt please her immensely. However, we also knew the EDAs wanted to present her with something representative of our feelings for her that would be memorable, appropriate and kind of fun as well. The guitar picks are an excellent idea but unfortunately were not going to be available in time to make an impact on her birthday. We hope that you will find the following another idea that you'll be proud to be associated with. If nothing else, we hope it brings at least a smile to every EDA face. For a number of reasons, there was virtually no consultation with the EDA's for this gift, so we hope you don't find it too presumptious that we're presenting it on behalf of all the EDA's. Timing was a key factor, and we had to move quickly if we were going to be able to present this to Jewel on her actual birthday. However, we're confident that most of you will be happy (or at least amused) with what we've done. As an abstract and symbolic gesture, we've arranged to have a star officially named after Jewel. This has actually been accomplished! A star that is easily visible (in the bucket of the Little Dipper) no longer has just a bunch of teloscopic co-ordinates for a name. It has been officially redesignated as 'Jewel Kilcher (Jewel of the North)' Those familiar with Jewel's favorite question ("Would you rather be a fish or a star?") & her answer to this question will hopefully see the thought (& humor) behind this gift. A few of the key people in Jewel's life that know about the gift have said this will blow her mind! (They are sworn to secrecy, too :-) Amy Nuefeld also was kind enough to design a card from The EDAs to Jewel. This was originally intended to simply accompany a message detailing all the great things the EDAS were doing (such as The JPK Trust Project, Blood Drive, The Raffle, JPK night at Java Joe's, Hot Dog Fest & Berryhill/Hummel EDA Cafe in Boston). Without knowledge of this gift, she created the PERFECT card! Incredibly, on the front is an angel figure blowing into their hand as it explodes into stars! Cosmic, heh? ;-) You can all see this card along with Jewel's certificate, letter & star map. You can also read a note that was included explaining the concept. We think this will pretty much explain to you why we felt this was a gift both worthy of Jewel, and the truly wonderful group of people that comprise the EveryDay Angels. All of this is now available on a new area of the "Pieces Of Jewel" site. You can actually view these gifts now by taking a little journey to: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/birthday.htm Lenedra has the originals (certificate, card, star maps, etc.) with her now in Europe. She will be personally presenting them to Jewel on her birthday (Friday) in Cologne, Germany as a gift from all the EDAs. We hope you continue to support the EDA Foundation & become an active part of its future & to make a difference in your own community, as well. But for now we simply hope you all enjoy being a part of this birthday gift to Jewel & accept it in the symbolic & humorous way it was intended.
