I just read a post about how, if a cd is really gone, you might try toothpaste to buff out the scratch. I have another great use for toothpaste: silver polish! My silver claddaugh ring was horribly tarnished and looked awful. My roommate suggested that I try rubbing it off with toothpaste, and it worked! The best kind for this is the really pasty stuff, not the gel kind. I used Colgate original. You put it on the silver, with no water, and just rub it around with your fingers or a cloth, then wipe it off with tissue. Repeat until the tarnish is completely gone (it shouldn't take many tries), and then rinse it off with water and wipe if with a towel. Spiffy! And much cheaper and handier than silver polish! Hope this makes some silver-wearers happy! Jewel is a NRRDY artist as is Dar Williams; MCC above and also Deanna Carter who probably took Jewel's place in the continuum of country music with her ballads. There is no "Spice Girl" equivalent in country music I think Jewel can call her own shots since she has hit almost every chart at Radio&Records but the Saturday Night Live shows are sold to syndication and two successful songs raises their value. Maybe Jewel was being rebellious to individualize her performance. Also, while a few scratches on the underside won't do a whole lot, (The actual portion of a CD containing music or data is ver small, about 10-15%. And even so, there's logic encoded on the disc that corrects minor errors.) But the laser light still has to be able to pass through, so a *lot* of scratches, or I imagine a change in the optical properties of the plastic could render the disc unplayable. But then, with the gazillion of regular CD formats, plus multi-session, and now all these DVD formats.... more likely the reason a CD won't work is 'cause you've got the wrong equipment. :-b - - - -- Blessed Be - ---pat "Those who look for life will be found by love." -- Aino Minako ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 02:30:16 -0400 (EDT) From: HSMS97@aol.com Subject: Jewel Win95 theme pack Hey EDA's!! First there is going to be a mind blowing show by Tara Maclean this Thursday at the Newbury street Tower Records. She will be performing at 10pm. She is going to be part of a storwide sale and concert promotion and she will no doubt be thrilled to see smiling faces in the crowd. She is still a relatively unknown artist but will soon be on the fasttrack to success. If you come to this performance you can say you saw her when. And another reason to go is what better way to start your EDAdventure than a concert full of wonderful music. She is also going to be at the Kendall Cafe this Friday and Saturday at 8pm both nights. She is really worth seeing if you can make it. Then after the EDAdventure leaves you wanting more come down to the Patty Griffin show at Passim. I know there are at least 10 EDAs who can attest to the greatness of seeing Patty live. This is a definite must see. This will probably be Patty's smallest show of this tour. The entire venue only holds 120 people. She is going to be going on at 7pm and tickets are 12.50. The only catch is that you have to pre-purchase tickets in person. If anyone wants tickets but can't make it to Cambridge just e-mail me and I'll take care of everything. Also people who can make it will be meeting for dinner starting at 5:30. This will allow us to get FRONT ROW TABLES. I have purchased 6 tickets and 2 are still left, but I can porchase more if the need arrises. It should be a wonderful show. I was at Passim Monday for the Mollys and Harvard Sq. on a warm spring night is magical. I hope you can make it. Talk to you soon. Gregory Page -- late of the Rugburns -- is the artist performing, and there may be a very wonderful opening act and some guest appearances to delight the crowd, as well. Jewel, Lenedra, and Atlantic do not want these CD quality recordings to wind up in the hands of Atlantic. i suggest that if anyone realy wants to acquire permission to put recordings on CD, then you should contact Lenedra. otherwise, if you are going to put recordings on CD for your own archival and non-profit use, then please don't tell anyone. :) i really don't think that any EDAs should encourage a non-profit distrubution of Jewel's recordings on CD especially in this forum. Hi all, Because this topic continues to plague this list, I'm going to adress it one more time. ANY tapes of Jewel that are distributed on this list are NOT to be made into CDs regardless of whether profit is a motive. I have put hundreds of hours into producing the "authorized FREE tapes" & I enjoy & love doing it. Mike & others have donated countless hours & effort to distribute these tapes. Jewel & Lenedra allow us to occasionally do this as a gift to The EDAs. Their wishes are that you trade or copy them for FREE & that NO CDs are made--period. It doesn't matter what your intentions are & arguing over the legality/morality of it is senseless. Jewel & Lenedra's wishes are crystal clear. Does anything else matter? If we continue to have people who blatantly disregard those wishes, the solution is simple. There will be no more "authorized tapes" distributed in the future. Then EVERYONE loses. Sure, you'll have plenty of audience tapes, but incredible quality tapes like The Jewelstock Tapes, Jeweltide Carols, Jewel Rocks The Paradise & others will never happen again. This list is monitored by Atlantic & management, so don't think they aren't aware of the situation. (You'd be wise to remember that before posting such things.) The basic wishes are: 1) Do not sell live recordings of Jewel in ANY format. 2) Do not make CDs of Jewel's rare or live material. 3) Do not scalp tickets. Disregarding these very simple wishes will only hurt the relationship that this list is privileged to enjoy. I can't make it any simpler than that.... Maybe i'm jumping the gun a bit, by replying to this, but it looks like once again Jewel will not be coming South for a headlining show. : ( Well, just to be blunt that really sucks. The furthest south Lilith Fair is coming is Atlanta, yeah, i know that's not Jewel's fault. But it seems she plays an abundance of shows in the north, I mean, Ohio AGAIN.... I have to travel 6 hrs to see her play for 50 minutes. What's up with her not coming South? Hasn't she already played Toledo and Cleveland recently? I hope someone can answer my questions about why she just plays the same areas over and over and hardly ever lets her Southern fans see her. It just seems a little unfair. : ( ashley ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 16:32:39 -0400 From: "The Bowman Family" Subject: Re: "MMMBOP" I love that song!!! It's my favorite!! I thought Jewel did a fine performance other than the fact that it seemed she forgot a little segment of her lines. And as to regards to that so what. It has to be hard for anyone to remember all the lines to everything she wrights. It's not the end of the world if she messed up on national T.V. She did a fine job and we should be glad she was on SNL at all. bruce ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 16:52:46 PST From: raisingrrrl@juno.com Subject: NJC:My last post Wow, two posts from me in one day. I was just in the fax room here at work where they play a crappy radio station called Mix 106.3 - lots of dull adult contemporary stuff gets played on there and the DJs are the wettest, most boring DJs on the planet. Everyday this week when I've walked past or into that room I've heard Jewel at least once. Usually it's only WWSYS but twice now I've heard YWMFM. THe DJ said afterwards, 'there's Jewel with YWMFM - a really lovely song.' Is it just me or is it really sad that only stations who play "really lovely songs" are playing Jewel in Australia? I know that if Sarah McLachlan got played on the radio here, she too would be picked up by these stations. Ugh. But from what I've heard of Hansen they're so poppy they couldn't even claim to listen to Silverchair.....I heard it was the idea of US executives wanting a really young band - as young as Silverchair were when they started.....
