I was wondering if anyone had any info on Jewel playing Lilith Fair in Milwaukee on August 19th. The ads in the paper say Jewel will be there. The Lilith Fair web site lists Jewel in the lineup playing from 8:05 till 8:50. However, the info I've seen from Alan doesn't list Milwaukee. My personal opinion of why she didn't do a skit is that rehearsals run all week for the show, and Jewel didn't have ANY time!!! I bet she only had a couple times to go through the songs before the show, so there's no way she could have done a skit. I think it would have been cool if she was in a scene though! Did I missing something here? And in respond to the SNL performance I didn't think the messup was that noticeable and my friends who was talking about it today only said that she looked skinny and that that was a good episode which scared me. Just remeber the Sesame Street song which was on this weird toy that me and my sister had. The song was sung by Grover I think and went everyone makes mistakes why can't you. We should all take this song into consideration. One more little thing(the last one I promiss) how much mail does an AOL mailbox hold because I am going away for a few days on a wonderful class trip to Springfield, 4 hours there 4 hours back and a visit to amish country. (Jewel is already in my walkman.) And I just wanted to make sure my maibox won't overflow. ~*Chrissy, the angel who can't spell and is going to shut up*~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 1997 19:19:00 -0700 From: That Little Voice Inside Your Head Subject: Re: NJC: Little Jewel Question Yeah, they have been going out for a year it's in RS mag read up chicky :) Love, Lora **************************************************************************** Let them love, Peter For they've had no time They should have birds, songs, and trees And hills to climb ~Jewel Kilcher and Edwin McCain **************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 1997 22:32:26 -0400 (EDT) From: CornflkGl@aol.com Subject: NJC : 'hypocrites' Well, this is interesting. I think that I should explain a bit, since things have been posted about rude AOL EDAs ( mentioning one name ) and the entire problem started with me. WARNING : the next bit of info is very immature and shows a side of me that should be mature and give it up, but won't. Read at your own risk. A couple of days ago, a girl posted with the subject line : EVERYONE SHUT UP. In her post she said <> Those of you who know me probably know what I did next : I wrote back saying : <> Granted ,it wasn't very nice, BUT I don't really enjoy being told to shut up, so..... she was online and wrote back immediately : <> I wrote back : <> Okay, I know. But I couldn't help it. I have a temper. So... to TRY and make a long story short, she started IMing me and telling me to leave her alone ( which I would have done, but SHE was the one IMing ME ). She then had 3 other friends ( most of which were EDAs ) start IM bombing me ( which means they keep IMing you over and over, which makes a lot of noise and usually freezes up your computer. It doesn't hurt my computer at all ). I was also talking to other EDAs at the time, so I went into the EDA room. The girls and their friends came into the EDA room and told everyone that _I_ was IM bombing THEM and calling _THEM_ the names they were calling ME. I cut and pasted their IMs to my friends in the chat room so they could see I wasn't the rude one. The girls got upset because no one was reacting to what they were saying, so they started scrolling in the chat room and inviting non-EDAs in. All of the other, real EDAs went into another chat room and left them there. I asked Chelsea to mailbomb them for me. We voted in the room, and it was half and half, but Chelsea did it anyway, and I thank her for that :). Go ahead, I know it's juvenile.. but, you know what ? I do NOT enjoy being called a bitch, a nasty shank,an ugly whore, a nasty piece of skanky shit, being told to die, and being told to quit harassing teens and go get a boyfriend. It's really pathetic, and I'm nt the type who will sit around and let some pathetic little girls try to inimidate me. Oh well. And look, I'm not even posting their names. On the other hand, I love you all ( almost :) ). Does jewel have a little sister, or did have a little sister? From the song little sister. 2. Does jewel hate her dad, because in the song daddy she seemed it. but in the hardrock cafe live perfomance they sang a duet. 3. Does jewel have a boyfried, and if so who, thanks love you EDA Paladin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 1997 21:57:27 -0500 From: Greg Dunn Subject: NJC: Artists & angels I know, this is totally NJC. It is artist-related though, three times over, and I think bears somewhat on Jewel's situation of 3-4 years ago. If you don't want to read a mildly depressing post with a point, feel free to trash it now. I spent a while on IRC this afternoon chatting with some EDA folk, and found myself in a long /msg exchange with a talented young budding artist who needed some advice. I don't know if I was able to help -- I always feel clumsy when trying to advise people who are having a rougher time than I ever did -- but I feel that I at least added some positive vibes. Suffice to say that the person I was chatting with suffered from low self-esteem and IMHO was enduring some unwarranted parental abuse. The crux of the matter seemed to be that artistic endeavors don't constitute a "real" job, and that training to be an artist of any sort was frivolous and counter-productive. Hence a career involving art was being actively discouraged and even blocked by the parents. Having a budding artist for a daughter, I understand the concern parents have for their offspring. I also understand that a frustrated child will rebel and perhaps self-destruct if discouraged unreasonably. Sure, you don't want your kids to try to make a living as mimes or street preachers, but why should a healthy interest in music, painting, poetry, journalism, or broadcast work be denounced? Many people turn these gifts into useful attributes for their careers, no matter what they ultimately choose. And a significant minority actually succeed as artists in their own right; A certain young folk-singer from Alaska comes to mind. I have no illusions that my own favorite young lady will become another Jewel, but I think it would be utter folly to discourage her natural talents just because no one else in the family has ever succeeded as a musician. No one has tried, as far as I know. After work, I stopped by one of my favorite delis for a quick meal while waiting for pictures to be developed. I always enjoy talking with the people at this restaurant, because they have become friends over the last couple of years of constant visitation. One young lady in particular has earned my admiration, because while working full-time, she has managed to graduate from high school with distinction and earn a scholarship to a prestigious local art school. Her paintings and sculptures have won awards, and gave me hope that she would some day make a splash on the national scene. While I was eating, she came out to say hello, and was clearly excited. I inquired about her happy demeanor, and she happily told me that she was expecting a child. Being unmarried, she said that her family wasn't too thrilled yet, but that they were coming along and would probably get behind it eventually. She bubbled on for a few minutes about how she wanted to start raising a family, and how much she was looking forward to it. OK, this is her life and she's perfectly free to choose the path. But 18 years old, single, working full time... it was apparent that her schooling and artistic expression was going to take a clear back seat; she dismissed it without a comment. I wish her all the happiness she can find; but I grieve for the artist who may now have to wait for years to find an outlet, if ever. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive to the fragility of the artist here; but I ask you: What if Jewel had starved, or drowned, or gotten picked up by Hitchhiker Joe while waiting for her talent to win over the concertgoers in San Diego? Or worse, her mother had decided that a roof over their head was worth more than any silly dreams of supporting oneself by playing in a coffeeshop? What if John, Paul, George, and Pete had abandoned their musical career after being deported during their first gigs in Hamburg, never to hook up with Ringo and start honing their original material? You get the picture. What country is it -- Ireland? -- where artists are exempt from taxes on their earnings, and hence are more likely to follow the muse and produce something interesting, instead of beng distracted by the inevitable need to pay the rent... Oh well, enough ranting. Just a thought; if the EDAs and our kin don't encourage and promote artistic talent, what will become of it? Yeah, there's a glut of trash in the art world too, but how many potential Jewels are being stifled just because of a grudge or a lack of tolerance? I don't know. I worry, though, and that's why you see me shouting loudly about promising new artists, friends, and any neglected talents I happen to encounter. OK, I'll crawl back into my hole now. Flame away about the bandwidth loss if you want, but Jewel or no Jewel, I think this is relevant to the very meaning and existence of the EDAs. Even our angelic one was once a nobody, but for the grace of some very perceptive San Diego folk who gave her a chance and encouraged others to do the same... Let's all put our differences aside and concentrate on our similarities. Our common interests in art, particularly of the musical variety, have held this list together for two years now. Let's continue to promote Jewel and occasionally spin off topics on other worthy artists. If it means rallying people to EDA gatherings for Patty Griffin and Tara MacLean, or inviting people to your home for impromptu concerts, or even starting a foundation for the advancement ot the EDA ideals :-) why not? It doesn't have to hog the mail list bandwidth, and who knows, it could spawn another Jewel... - -- | Greg Dunn | if i was twice the man i could | | gregdunn@indy.net | be... i'd still be half of what | | GregDunn@aol.com | you need. | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Trent Reznor | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 1997 23:08:46 -0400 From: "Terrence R.
