How does this sound? Anyone for this idea? If so, I want to do "Little Sister" or "She Cries" but have a good idea for "Angel Needs a Ride". YOEST" <76473.3525@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Pgh. Lilith Fair Tickets Tickets for the Pittsburgh, PA Lilith Fair show, at the Star Lake Amphitheatre on August 12, went on sale this morning (Sat. May 10) at 10am local time. Prices are $40/$29 for the two types of reserved seating (under the balcony), and $22 for the lawn/grass/general admission seating (...plus a $4 service charge per seat, at least at the outlet that I went to). Several ways to get tickets include: --Ticketmaster outlets in the suburban Pgh. area, which include locations at National Record Mart/Oasis Record stores; Kaufmann's department stores; and Giant Eagle supermarkets; --By calling (412) 323-1919, which is the Ticketmaster phone number in the Pittsburgh area; --Ticketmaster and/or Starlake Amphitheatre online: http://www.starlakeamp.com or http://events.ticketmaster.com/ The first address willgive you all of the info that you need, but to actually buy the tickets that site links you up to the main, national Ticketmaster page...so whichever way you think is "faster" is up to you. Several notes: #1) This is the Star Lake Amphitheatre in Pgh, PA, which is not to be confused with the Starwood Amphitheatre in Nashville, TN which has a Lilith Fair concert ~two weeks prior to this one. If any EDAs are road tripping through several venues during the summer, this might be helpful in making sure that you're getting tickets for the right shows. #2) "Good news/Bad news" thing: The good news is that Jewel and these other artists are still maintaining their names, fan bases, popularities, and other such thing largely by word-of-mouth, by Internet, and by other such "non-mass-media" methods, for despite a *very minor* advertising or informational campaign in local media, the tickets are selling very well. That is also the bad news, too--the tickets are selling well. Actually, there's no imminent danger of selling out, it would seem--the lines weren't *that* long--but, it's possible that all of the "pavilion" (reserved/under the roof) seats *will* sell out. There's plenty of grass seats available, though, just don't count on Reserved if that's what you're after. #3) I'm sorry that I didn't post this earlier, but I had heard that tix wen't going on sale for a few more weeks yet, and I didn't catch the sale date, just announced this week, as this was not a good week. I hope that this info's helpful, and if anyone has any questions I may be able to answer them backchannel. Lilith Fair sounds like it's going to be a good tour, & Jewel's soloing it later in the summer as well. I've only been to one Jewel concert so far, but I second the statement made in the Rolling Stone article--"Jewel really must be heard in concert to capture the full range and power of her voice and music." Greg P.S. The other Lilith Fair artists scheduled for Pittsburgh are Sheryl Crow, Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, and Sarah McLachlin. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 18:36:02 -0500 From: Leif Hassell Subject: NJC: Poetry I wrote this today. "What is timeless about Truth? What is the meaning of Beauty? When truth and beauty are uttered in the tongues of men's minds?" So I look for the experiences that others have made seem Worthwhile, my own seeming shallow by comparison with heroes Both old and young, hoping that the lives of others will give me my own. And the cry comes back at me, rallying from the ragged throats of the collected mass of men, "You're a fool, a boy in a man's shell, thinking to make a life of patches, like Victor creating life from the dead. And you act as if your questions are an answer." I stand rebuked, knowing that I threw my words to the wind and they were blown back to bury in my bones. All that keeps me alive are the words that roll from a deeper mind than mine, "Men are put here to learn, to see the world and know it as best they can." Please don't e-mail me at this address, though, since I won't check this often. I FINALLY got my guitar!!! It's a beautiful brand new Takamine G Series Model EG-330C with steel strings. It's light brown in color with a glossy finish, very similar to Jewel's Taylor. It has a Takamine Equalizer pre-amp and is cut-away. I bought it at a small music shop (B&C Music, Plano, Texas), so the owner was really nice and genuine. The guitar was listed at $669.99 , but the owner gave it to me for free........ no, just kidding, but he did give me a discounted price, $449.99 . In fact, he threw in a $50 case, a $20 Kyser capo, and a $40 leather strap free. So with tax, the total was $486.56 . I'm going to buy a small $35 amp and a $10 cord a little later to ease the pain of spending so much at one time. Thanks so much to everyone who gave me suggestions...it was a big help! I can't play it till my 16th b-day on Tuesday, so I'll just have to wait it out. "Saturday Night Live", broadcast live from New York at 11:30pm Eastern time (yes, it is live, as Norm MacDonald proved to us a few weeks ago with a fairly innocent faux pas). The host for the show will be John Goodman, and the musical guest, who gets to perform twice during the show, of course will be Jewel. *Usually* the first musical performance is about 1/2 hour into the show, and the second about half an hour after that (but tapeheads like myself are well-advised to be ready all the time). "Experts" like Neil Young can sneak three songs in to their two allotted performance slots, but we EDAs should really only hope for two songs (wonder what they'll be? My guesses, and that's all they are, are FG and YWMFM [in that order, too, which would be neat]). She'll definitely do well, so don't worry about that. "Will she act?/Will she be in any of the skits?" Every once in a while the musical guest is in on them, but not too often. I simply don't know--it isn't all that common, but we'll have to wait and see. One other thing about SNL--this was at one time one of the premiere artistic/theatrical/comedic shows in the US, and to a certain extent its still operating on and even contributing to that reputation. There is, however, only so much that a show can do (which is why even great TV sitcoms and dramas eventually die off). The only thing that I'm saying with regard to this is that EDAs unfamiliar with the show shouldn't be too bent out of shape if the skits or the humor is a little too unsophisticated...more specifically, if the writers for the show, out of an inability to think of jokes (old SNL shows have mined those lodes *real well*, and there's not a lot left that's easy to find), go for something that's just too easy or obvious like the dress thing. Once again, no inside info, but just don't be surprised or offended, fellow EDAs. :) "Saturday Night Live" is a good/very good show, with many classic musical performances among its many highlights. Here's hoping that Jewel Kilcher contributes to that tradition :) Especially if she remembers the advice that Neil Young gave her when she first played Madison Square Garden (as quoted in Rolling Stone, "Just treat it like it's just another big pool bar" or something like that), I'm sure that she'll do very well and give us all a true gem of a performance to remember for a very long time :) Old enough to remember the original "Not Ready For Prime Time Players", Greg ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 22:27:00 -0400 From: Eric Molle Subject: Jewel photo A few days ago, someone said they would add a page to their site containing a Jewel photo. I am guessing that the backing musicians are the same as the ones that backed on the MTVUnplugged taping a few evenings ago (am I right?). I am undecided if I like the sax or not. It seems that it takes away from the essence of Jewel's music. Jewel seemed a little undecided herself, not sure what to do during the sax solo (which she certainly didn't write or have any hand in), though she did give the obligatory nod and smile to the saxist (Joshua Redman?). I thought the rest of the ensemble complimented her perfectly, and fit right in with Jewel's lead. All in all, a great version of WWSYS! (Maybe I just need more time for the sax to grow on me!) =) On a SNL tangent... (I haven't seen anyone post on this.) Dana Carvey was on Jay Leno a few evenings ago and did a little imitation and spoof about Jewel. He compared and associated her with Alanis. He spoofed about how wide a range their voices used, and said that they "changed" their voices so much in order to appeal to a wide range of audiences (implying that they are commercially-produced money machines: Not nice). Then he did a little mimic of YWMFM. It was funny, but not nice. =) OK, I was wrong. She was on again! This time she did YWMFM, no sax (thank god!). Again, I loved it! She seems to be holding up well despite being on tour and she must have jet-lag. For those fashion-slaves, she was wearing black slacks, a silk see through shirt, black bustierre, black shoes, had her hair up, black eyeliner, and the obligatory stage make-up (not too heavy though). She looked adorable! =) (I caught the mistake, but am choosing to ignore it!) =) Love you all! Crunch! =) Can't wait to meet those that I haven't met yet in one week! Can't wait to see all my many friends again! ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #348 ***************************
