Listening to it tonight brought me in mind of letting the list know about it. It's called The Midnight Special and is usually broadcast on Public radio stations. The programming consists of all sorts of rare folk music, comedy, and as the host says, "odds and ends". You can hear all sorts of wonderful stuff you'd never come into contact with anywhere else. They have a website at http://www.shout.net/special/ (this is an unsolicted plug). Thought I'd let you guys who don't know about the show in on it--it's really worth a listen. Living in the UK we suffer from a lack of media appearances from Jewel. I think I've only seen any of her videos once or twice on MTV and VH-1, and only the briefest of extracts on BBC when the US charts are shown. It was the broadcast of the US MTV music video awards that I first saw or heard any of Jewel's music. It was, I think, Who Will Save Your Soul that was nominated. Seeing the video prompted me to buy her album. This must be about a year ago now. In the last week I've tried to track down Jewel's latest single. But because of her not being widely known over here I received responses from record dealers like "Jewel, is that that Norwegian girl", or "Er...is that spelt D..U..E..L". So it hasn't been easy :-) However I have found out that the single will be released here on Monday (tomorrow). Hopefully with Jewel's current European tour we will see more media attention over here. I'll be going to see Jewel in the Accoustic Room at Mean Fiddler in London on the 14th May. Well it's time to go. Cheers Chris. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 May 1997 09:49:34 -0400 From: EDA Andrew Subject: Re: SNL What is SNL? Andrew. Hi Sarah, I'm planning on attacking the challenge of how to get great seats on two fronts: 1) get to a location where tickets will go on sale REAL early and stand on line (hopefully at the front) :-) 2) have a friend call Ticketmaster on the phone as soon as they start selling tickets The ideal scenario would be for the person standing on line to have a cell phone. That way, the person calling Ticketmaster could notify the person standing on line that they had scored tickets. If all the EDAs in the midwest, who want to go, do this we should all end up with good seats up front. For those who haven't been to World Music at Tinley Park, it's an outdoor venue covered by an open air modern structure. There are auditorium style seats and in the rear there is a large hill where people can sit on the grass. When I saw Alanis there, I sat at the front of the grass hill. The sound was great but she was a small figure is the distance. They do have large video screens that let those in the back still see the performers. If you do end up with seats on the grass, it's still worth going. Actually, it's kind of fun sitting on blankets on the hill and I'd have to say that the Alanis concert (despite what anyone says about Alanis) was the most exciting concert I've ever seen since I saw the Beatles at Shea Stadium on their first tour of the United States. I've never seen an artist who connected so powerfully with her audience. It seemed like everyone there sang every word of every song. She's not our Angel but I have to give her credit for being a powerful voice that connects with a huge audience. There's room for all of us. As Bob Dylan once said, "Nothing is better. Nothing is best. Hi again, guys :) I've noticed lately that there are TONS of posts on how to get JewelStock tapes, and I thought I'd share the knowledge I got from .. some random list elder a long time ago ( no idea who it was... ) ... THE BEST way to get a copy of the JewelStock tapes is to make friends ! I don't know the exact numbers, but I think over half of the list has the JS tapes. I won't go inot the whole long story of JS, and how we managed to convince Jewel to let us make tapes, and the rules we have to go by, and all the scary stuff that happened after the tapes were given to the list... let's just say that the tapes are ONLY for EDAs. There is always the possibility that people hear about the tapes, join the list JUST to get them, leave the list, and sell copies. Very bad idea. VERY. That's why , if you just put out a post saying you'd like a copy of the JS tapes, you usually won't get a reply. Those of us who have the tapes are pretty wary, because we know we have something special and we don't want to lose the trust Jewel has in us. SO... if you want the JS tapes , make friends ! Get to know people on the list. Go to EDA gatherings. Once people realize you're around to stay, they won't have a problem with making tapes for you. Sure, it's kind of hard work, but believe me, the tapes are WORTH IT !! Rachel, who doesn't have any tape dubbing equipment, so don't pick me out as the friend you make to get tapes from !! :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 97 11:55:56 -0800 From: John Kaminar Subject: Yearbook EDA Where is it located? I guess its time. So I just wanted to say hello. I saw Jewel in Chicago when she was here in March. It was a great concert, and I am glad I taped it. Now I can listen to one of the best live performances whenever I want to. I am going to try and make it to the Lilith Fair, although it makes me upset that its at the World. Well I just wanted to say hello to everyone....... Later, Nasima ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 1997 22:12:51 +0200 (MET DST) From: Lisa Golmen Subject: Paula Cole-pictures.. I noticed that foolish games wasn't there. I looked on the net for it and found a transcription, but it didn't work. My sister sings really well and I finally got her to sing some Jewel. Finally I had the motivation to pick out foolish games on guitar. I taped Hard Rock Live, so I cheated a little and looked at her fingering. It works really well and I think it is right on. I aslo picked out Sometimes It BE That Way. I cheated and saw her fingering again. My version works really well and it sounds like hers. If anybody would like my version of these two songs I'd be happy to pass it along. I haven't typed it on the computer yet, but I will. I sent this to Dennis Harris seeing as he is the first one who mentioned it, but as I've been checking my email (I hadn't checked it for three days) I noticed there has been more messages about my stupid mistake, so I thought I'd forward this to the group to let you know I got the message, and I fixed my mistake. Hope this lets everyone see I just didn't know, and I am sorry. Well have a nice day!! Julie forwarded message*************** Hi! I'm the bad high speed dubber. I just want to say thank you. Truth be told I didn't know that high speed dubbing messes up the quality, so I felt awful after reading your message. I felt so bad that I went to the store bought a new blank for the list member (I only did it to one tape) and rerecorded it in normal speed. So much for trying to save time (and money)!;) Anyways now that I know, I won't do it again. Thanks for the information. :) Oh and on a much happier note, I gave blood. It was quite an experience, but I did it. It was a couple of weeks ago, I forgot to send you an announcement. Oh, and I'm on the West coast, so we're not all anemic. ;) ttyl, and have a great day, Julie :) - --------- End forwarded message ---------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 May 1997 19:01:07 EDT From: twh662@juno.com (T H) Subject: Re: Its probably... So today it came back to me and I still though it was a good idea then I though again.(hears a little about myself) I have Epilepsy and have had it sense I was 8 now I am 20 21 in August. In Maryland there's a place landover,Maryland Epilepsy Foundation there called "Epilepsy Foundation of America" they have a news letter that comes out every month called "Epilepsy USA" so I subscribed for about two years now I have been on it and in every issue there is a envolpoe inside for you to send money. Now I know about the Foundation that Jewel and everyone on this list is sending to (sorry I forget the persons name) this person. Sense I have Epilepsy I would like to send money to foudation also and I am challenging every other EDA on this list to do the same even if it is 1 dollar that is 1 dollar more for finding a cure for Epilepsy. I am thinking about sending my pay check from last week $108.00 PLUS my SSI check a woping $170.00 $278.00 all together now that's research money. There address is: 4351 Garden City Drive Landover MD 20785-2267 so please make a donation.(Make a note that this is ONLY a donation) If it helps when I suscribed to Epilepsy USA they gave me all kind of info and one piece was a EFA pin which I am wearing on my cap right now and EVERYDAY to remind me of Epilepsy and everyone who has it. so I will have siezers the rest of my life and I take three different meds three times a day. So I don't drive and when I turn 21 in August I will not be able to drink. I know everone cannot give money for some reason or another that's alright. Did anyone catch the movie "First Do No Harm" staring (Meryl Streep) as the mother and (Seth Adkins)as the son who had Epilepsy. Last year in June I wrote to President Bill Clinton and three weeks later I got a personal response from him in a letter which is hanging on the wall right above my computer. I would like to ask every EDA if they have the same disorder that I have and if you do please give me an E-mail so I can hear your story and know that I am not the only one on this list with this disorder. PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE could Alan (Mr.BB) print this out and forward it to Jewel for me I would REALLY appericate it. Thanks. Any comments are welcomed. Hi! I just had to tell everyone my good news. Even though I live in Maine and there isn't anything here, I'm getting the PoY tabs book sent right to my doorstep!! I went to Bangor, the nearest real town, 2 hours away, last week, and I went to a store to get guitar picks so I could actually figure out how to play the guitar I got for Christmas, and then I saw all these tab books. But no Jewel!!! So I asked the guy who worked there if he really did have it, but in another place or whatever, and he spent 20 minutes looking, and then offered to have it ordered and sent to me since I live so far away. Geez, I do love being from Maine sometimes!! Even though we Mainers sometimes get a bad rap, I think they're all just peachy. Well, almost all. Anyway, I also got a chord dictionary (it came with a cd! How cool is that?), so I could figure out how to make the chords once I get the book. I just feel so spiffy! And I also found out that I use the same picks as Jewel (yellow ones with li'l turtles on them). And I only know 3 chords too, just like she used to! Yesss! There is hope! :) love, the soon to be transplanted angel from Maine, land of the nice small-town people, Becca :) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #331 ***************************
