So, 5 pints... not toooo bad, but there's like, what, 900+ of us? hmmmm.... I'll tell my blood donating story (again), maybe it'll encourage you to donate as well... maybe not, but I'm gonna try! So... I e-mail Dennis "great idea about the blood drive, but I'm getting a tattoo the day after tomorrow, so I don't think I'll be able to!" I've given blood before, but I really am not too terribly fond of needles... Dennis reminded me there was a day in between that day and my tattoo (well, sorta). I live across the street from a hospital, I don't have classes the next day. oh... what the hell, I can go sorta.. try. turns out hospitals don't take random donations, only for your own operation and such... oh... darn... BUT, the nice lady at the desk told me that The Red Cross just *happens* to be having a drive there that day. I'm thinking, that's too odd, I guess I'm gonna go do this now. So, I go in, go through the tons of ever-so-amusing questions, give my blood, get free cookies, go home (SEE? free cookies! and those nifty Capri-Sun things the cool kids used to have in elementary school, what can be better?), I'm still alive. --> SO... people... it's totally painless... and _let me tell you something_, in comparison to the tattoo, this is a heavenly massage, no joke. and, if you are scared or need support, get together with the EDA nearest you and GO TOGETHER! bring moral support, someone to hold your hand, be there, whatever. and if you're within a reasonable distance of Cleveland, *I'LL* go with you! I'm sure there's tons of other people who will do the same. and ~HEY DENNIS~. make all those people going to Great Adventure all go donate together that weekend! hehe (as we watch the attendance suddenly drop). but seriously, you'll have tons of support, and I hear it's harder to get banned by the Red Cross than by Daffy Duck. (did I mention they give you nice stickers to wear that say "I gave blood today"? that way you can tell the world how generous you are :) "If the angel deigns to come it will be because you have convinced her, not by tears but by your humble resolve to be always beginning: to be a beginner." take care my dears. I was watching David Letterman last night and Roseanne was on. She said that she was going to be in the Wizard of Oz play, as the witch, coming out soon. Well, maybe if they show it on tv, like on TNT, they might show the version with Jewel too. Usually when new stuff comes out, they play previous stuff related to that just because of the popularity of it. Like whenever they have the new Batman movies out, they always play the old ones on national tv at around the time the new one comes out. Well, I'm just hoping...nothin' wrong with that. =) Mark - --- Inside my heart there's an empty room. My ISP (Internet Service Provider) is migrating to new systems for better performance. I didn't find out until AFTER I volunteered to move and things started getting mapped that it was incompatible with my EDA Yearbook. Fortunately, it is NOW working and all the data files have been converted correctly. (Hey, programming is cool like that! eheh) So what does this mean? Well, it MAY work for you, but you're best bet for the next week would be to access my site at: http://shell7.ba.best.com/~amethyst/ as opposed to: http://www.endor.org/ This is due to the fact that it may take a little bit to get my new www.endor.org address located. SO.. check out the EDA Yearbook right now at: http://shell7.ba.best.com/~amethyst/jewel/eda/yearbook or the JPK Trust Page at: http://shell7.ba.best.com/~amethyst/jpk Sorry for the confusion.. It was full of music and dancing, and dancing, and..... MUSIC! I found it quite ironic that the benefit was filled, with music (All but one act, and there were 12) I ran into an old friend who used to, along with me, sing in a group during high school. Amy, that=92s her name, was talking about new artists that she has seen, and, Jewel came up in the conversation (go figure "Do you know who she is?" Amy asked. "Uh I think I do," I replied) Anyhoot, she was going to perform, with her sister Jessica, a Jewel song. To my delight she choose =93Face of Love=94. She and her sister both play instruments by ear, so they do not need sheet music, which saved us many a time during shows in 1994. Amy asked if I wanted to sing backup (of course I couldn=92t say no) but = I want to do something for the deaf audience as well. So I decided to sing and sign the song using American Sign Language. She thought that was a great idea. I had only taken two semesters of sign in college, but my hands remembered the words to the song (thank goodness, people would have though I was elegantly swatting flies) We got on stage and Amy began to sing. She has the most beautiful voice. Undescribable to say the least. The real weird thing was that the spotlight was on me, not on Amy. (I found out later she asked the technicians to do this) Well at the end of the song we got a standing ovation. It felt so good to give a song to every member of the audience. Well that was my evening and I am tuckered out. Hope everyone has a glorious weekend! Eric the phenomenal phenom PS: There has been a lot of talk about volunteering, not only on the list, but also on the news. He told me that they may play both days, that is at the tailgate party and at the main show, which is cool. Also some inside info. He says that BlockBuster will have a big tent set up on the campgrounds where the Tailgating is for those of us going on Friday. Apparently most of the bands will be there during certian periods signing autographs and other things. He seemed to think that Bush and Counting Crows wouldn't but said that all the other headliners would bit he didn't mention Jewel. I will be sure to ask him when I see him next week. He also said that if they get to play both days than they would prbly do an Acoustic set on Friday and then plugged on Sat. More to come. Hope to see everyone there. Once again, I'm dictating this letter from the comfort of my couch here in San Diego, while the sap, aka Joe Daly, types my mail. (He doesn't know what I put behind his freezer -jd). Phew! We're fresh off the road from a special little tour with a special little girl named Jewel? Do any of you know her? You might- she's the one singing in my video. I'm sick of all this crap about people asking me about what it's like to be in that video! People should ask her, "Hey, what's it like to be in a video with Steve Poltz??" I mean, am I wrong? I helped write the song, and I helped make the video? RIght? Right? So that means that it's equally MY video, too, right? Oh well, that's just another way The Man is trying to keep me down. But we had fun fun fun until our daddies took the t-bird away on tour with little Jewel. We love her. It was fun to wear something onstage besides t-shirts portraying animals copulating. We also enjoyed getting to ride in a tour bus, and playing Retail Store. Stinky would always be the cantankerous, but lovable "Mr. Whitman," and John would be the neighborhood juvenile delinquent who would mug people for their lunch money. I'd play "Shelbert the Soda Jerk," and whenever Jewel or one of the roadies would come onto our van, Stinky would say, "If you're not buying anything, get out of my store! And you better pay for that magazine if you're gonna read it!" John would just grab them and start punching them really hard in the stomach, and when they fell to the floor, he'd call them "Mama's boys," and rifle through their pockets for change. That didn't go over as smoothly with Jewel as the roadies. I'd just say, "Can I jerk you a cool one?" Then one day, John beat up Stinky when Stinky was shelving pitted prunes, and John got carried away when he rifled through Stinky's pants, which came off, and well... John.. um.. took a few liberties with Stinky.... and well... we just don't play that game anymore. So we're going back on the road. Are any of you coming to see us, or are you all going to watch that thing on TV? We start tomorrow night in Ventura, which is a stupid name for a city. They should call it "Gruesome City of Urban Doom." I don't know why- they just should. Then we're going to tour the shit out of the Northern US of A, hitting all sorts of fun places like Rock Island, Lawrence, Toledo, and Northampton. We're also hitting a lot of casinos, massage parlors, nondenominational churches, bingo matches, rodeos, all male leather reviews, all female feather reviews, Pepsi bottling plants, and closed ski resorts. Sometimes I have to tell John that he can't just go up to strangers and tell them that if they don't take his picture immediately, he'll punch them. He's shaky that way. We're trying to get to as many cities as we can, and that makes us all tinkle. If we're not coming to your city on this leg of the tour, it's probably because of something YOU did. WHat do you think of that? THAT"s what I'm talking about. Actually, we're going to go back into the studio in late June and start recording our new album, which will have all the songs we played on the Jewel tour that everyone asks about but which don't appear on any of the albums for some weird reason. So hopefully by the end of the fall, we'll have our FOURTH album out, and let me tell you, it's like birthin' babies- they don't get no easier, but they're all cute as hell and full of crap! Waitaminit... what the hell does that mean. God, I have to lay off the tapioca binging or I'll be in real trouble. This time, if you come see us, please bring just regular pudding for us. It's fun, it's edible, it's a lubricant!!!! OK, I have to go now. Our manager Bob wants to go to the dentist. Bob doesn't have any dental problems, but he likes to go to different dentist's offices and sit in the waiting room, and act really fidgety, look around a lot and flinch, and read Hilights magazine, and every so often mutter, "Oh, Holy Mother of Sweet Baby Jesus, I think I'm going to fucking die if that guy drills me..." He then begins to weep, gets up, and starts to run out of the waiting room, but before he does, he screams at all the other now-attentive waiting room dwellers- "In the name of all that's holy, get the hell out of there before that maniac drills a hole up your ass!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!" and the people look out the window and see him pulling at his ears, running madly down the street, weaving between pedestrians, and sometimes stopping at parked cars to weep some more. Then he laughs, goes to another dentist, and repeats the same thing. I think he's weird. Now let me get these chaps off and get out of here. Yours in Christ, Steven J. Anyway, it's probably the first time that I've stopped skimming messages for a week. Thanks again, BTW, I have to agree with your insight on the article. Who among us haven't had a time when our parents were a bit gruff? Sometimes mine got a little surly, but I'm impressed with the way I grew up. I repect my elders. I address everyone as sir and ma'am, and, in general, have stayed a really well adjusted person. Though I don't know jewel personally, I think that probably she is just as repectful, and just as well adjusted(Mr BB--can you back me up?). I think people forget that Jewel and her family weren't exactly living in paradise. There was work to be done, and if you didn't do the work, the family starved the next winter. Add to that the fact that Jewel didn't exactly have the easiest of lives after she left Alaska. I dare say that most of us that type daily on the keyboard and spend our time surfing the web and watching sitcoms (me very definitely included) would have crumbled living through what Jewel had to. I think a harsher upbringing probably served her well. I also agree with Adrian that they could have left out the personal stuff with Nedra and Atz-- but we must remember that we're living in a world we created. If the most sensational articles didn't sell, they wouldn't be written. If people didn't turn on the news to see the killing of the day video, we wouldn't have a news channel in Miami whose news program motto is: "If it bleeds, it leads". Lets hope that new fans who are getting to hear about her for the first time care more about her than the gossip on her parents. And, not to beat a dead horse, but--- If Jewel wasn't so damn boring(kind of)--she's well grounded, she's not suicidal, she wasn't born the daughter of a rck star, she's polite, she's fun to be around, she cares about her fans, she's thankful of the people that buy her records---they wouldn't have to look elsewhere for the "meat" in the story. Anyway, just my $.02 . Take Care, Patric BTW--for those of you who got this far, I'm gonna put the RS pics up at: http://www.interserf.net/paric/rs.htm Tehy'l only be up for a couple days, and there's no link off the main page. Enjoy! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 May 1997 09:52:13 -0400 From: Crash Boy Subject: Jewel Unplugged tickets hi guys. i haven't seen anyone post about this, so i thought that i'd spread the word. :) it turns out that K-Rock, WXRK 92.3 here in the new york city area is giving away the unplugged tickets. this is the same station that howard stern operates from. they'll have random contests for the 92nd caller all weekend, and special "bonus hours" where anyone that can get through to the station that hour will receive tickets. the number for the station is 1-888-434-1997. and this is all weekend. and the contest is for three unplugged shows. jewel, fiona apple, and the wallflowers. when you win tickets, you get to chose which of the three you want to see. i guess it's obvious which one i'll pick if i get through. :) hope that helps everyone out. It's a record store only promo of Toad's greatest hits and the new song "Come Down" from the album being released May 20. So, if any of you work at a store, ask your manager to request one, or go to your local record store and ask about it. It's limited pressing and the awesome tracks make it a Toad fan must have! Could someone send it to me? Also, awhile back someone posted an address of Stephen King in which you could send him a book and he would autograph it and send it back. They said he would sign up to 2 books. Could someone also send me that? Thanks... Please read it and forward it on to anyone that you know. DEATH OF AN INNOCENT ******************************** I went to a party, Mom, I remembered what you said. You told me not to drink, Mom, so I drank soda instead. I really felt proud inside, Mom, the way you said I would. I didn't drink and drive, Mom, even though the others said I should. I know I did the right thing, Mom, I know you are always right. Now the party is finally ending, Mom, as everyone is driving out of sight. As I got into my car, Mom, I knew I'd get home in one piece. Because of the way you raised me, so responsible and sweet. I started to drive away, Mom, but as I pulled out into the road, the other car didn't see me, Mom, and hit me like a load. As I lay there on the pavement, Mom, I hear the policeman say, the other guy is drunk, Mom, and now I'm the one who will pay. I'm lying here dying, Mom.. I wish you'd get here soon. How could this happen to me, Mom? My life just burst like a balloon. There is blood all around me, Mom, and most of it is mine. I hear the medic say, Mom, I'll die in a short time. I just wanted to tell you, Mom, I swear I didn't drink. It was the others, Mom. The others didn't think. He was probably at the same party as I. The only difference is, he drank and I will die. Why do people drink, Mom? It can ruin your whole life. I'm feeling sharp pains now. Pains just like a knife. The guy who hit me is walking, Mom, and I don't think it's fair. I'm lying here dying and all he can do is stare. Tell my brother not to cry, Mom. Tell Daddy to be brave. And when I go to heaven, Mom, put "Daddy's Girl" on my grave Someone should have told him, Mom, not to drink and drive. If only they had told him, Mom, I would still be alive. My breath is getting shorter, Mom. I'm becoming very scared. Please don't cry for me, Mom. When I needed you, you were always there. I have one last question, Mom, before I say good bye. I didn't drink and drive, so why am I the one to die? ************************ Someone took the effort to write this poem. So please, forward this to as many people as you can. And see if we can get a chain going around the world that will make people understand that drinking and driving don't mix. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, so please forward this letter to as many people as you can. This is the letter: You must send this on in 1 hour after reading this letter to 10 different people. If you do this, you will receive luck in love. The person that you are most attracted to will soon return your feelings. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!!!!!! You have read the warnings, you must send this on!!!!! Eric Mancough send this letter out within 45 minutes of reading it. Not even 4 hours later was he walking along the street when he ran into Ann Heartearn, his secret love for 5 years. Ann came up to him and told him of her passionate crush on him that she had had for 2 years. Ann and Eric are still married with five children, happy as ever. *note* The more people that you send this to, the better luck you will have. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 May 1997 11:22:05 -0400 From: EDA Andrew Subject: Re: MIDWEST EDA'S! She sang before a crowded room of perhaps 150 people. Wally, door man, had turned away those who did not early enough. At twenty, only two years ago, she looked much different than the polished image you see now, but still clearly very beautiful. I have three excellent photos from that performance: two on stage, and one stunning photo close up. If you are interested in glossy copies of these color 4x6 photos please e-mail me privately and type "Photos" as the subject area of your e-mail.
