First, of all, Atlantic will hire the director for the video. This is pretty much standard practice unless you are a superstar or some who is just starting out (i.e. funding their own videos). Secondly, after the director is chosen Jewel will have very little say in the aspects of the video. I have talked to Bibi (Jewel's former? tour manager) about this back when the new version of YWMFM was being put together. Bibi and I are both independent film people and I joked with her about my getting to work on a video and Bibi told me it will be a long time before even she even gets to do one (and she's Jewel's best friend). I'm not trying to kill your enthusiam. I just wanted to let you not what's up. Phil (The T-Shirt Guy) ps. Down." It's really cool and on the Tiny Lights Tour John Hagen played some wild cello behind through this one. It's only Jewel singing, no Steve so My Body is Changing must be a different song... Anyone have lyrics or audio to Down? I think it may have been part of the Mediadome broadcast (is that what it's called) but I couldn't access that. Cheers, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 May 1997 02:11:50 -0400 From: Crunch Subject: NJC: Community Effort: Picking Up Trash !! =) My workplace is located on the side of a ridge that runs through a hilly countryside. A neighboring ridge holds a few small parks and scenic points. Over the last six months or so, these parks have been littered with beer and soda cans and bottles, plastic bags, candy wrappers, and.... well, you get the point. =) A few of the locals which I sometimes have a beer with after work have organized a small effort to clean up these areas. Tommorow, this group is going to spend the afternoon and evening, provided it doesn't rain, walking the ridge with trash bags, picking up trash. A simple thing, but it will allow me to do something positive for the environment, learn to know some people I normally would not, and get some fresh air! An added bonus: an unsolicited pub has offered us free dinner and beer when we finish. =) The group will be small (4-8 people), the work will be dirty and stinky, and I will be tired after worked eight hours. But, it will be SO worth it!!! =) How many other places can this be done? =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 May 1997 00:19:27 -0700 From: John-Eric Subject: ::Down:: lyrics here =) The song "Down" was introduced by Jewel on the Tiny Lights Tour as a "brand new song" in which she only had thought of the words "down" and "I will take you there." The rest of the lyrics she "made up" as she went along." :-) I can honestly say that she really had the whole song down (pun intended); I saw the last four shows and the soundcheck at the San Diego show and for the most part the lyrics were the same each time (Tom Harris and I were singing along to it word for word during the San Diego show even). :-) Here are the lyrics that I could figure out and remember (if you caught the Mediadome webisode of the San Diego concert you could have recorded the song): "I'll make up the verses, bear with me." -- Jewel Take me down to the water Where the cold wind blows Take me out to the wildlife baby The red light meets the crossbow I will take you there I will take you there Down I will take you down The empty sign always leads to the west Bar stools begin to cry Jupiter leads its cosmic way And still you ask me why I will take you there I will take you there Down I will take you down ::bridge:: Underneath the twilight The stars begin to crash Still you wonder why Underneath the twilight Die I ::jamming cello solo by John Hagen:: Take me out to the Swammy I really love to surf there The blue sky, the blue water Everything under there Will you take me there Will you take me there Down I will take you down Down Down There you go, the last verse was from the SD show (a beach where she used to surf I think) and was different from the other shows I saw. It has a chorus that begins with "Won't you come down. Won't you please come down off that one legged horse, etc......" (This is a bouncy acoustic number that begins with a riff very similar to Patty Griffin's "Mad Mission" for those familiar with that.) The song titled "Down" is a completely different "very rocked out" song that surfaced midway through the tour & has lyrics that changed & developed as the tour progressed. Its much more agressive musically than anything she's previously performed. And to confuse the matter even more, a few EDAs caught another new song at some of the rehearsals called "Downtown Where The Vampires Go" thats another Poltz/Kilcher collaboration that is unfinished but shows some serious potential. It was very danceable & had very bizzarre lyrics. All 3 of these songs (& a lot more) were written during the tour. Jewel's newest songs are in a state of flux so titles &/or lyrics will likely change considerably as time goes on. I was getting quite a few private emails about these 3 tunes & I hope that helps a little bit on clearing up the confusion. But I thought I'd throw in my two pennies (or should I say nickels?). Basically, I really don't care what comes out first, I just want the new album. In fact, I haven't like what's been on the radio. When I first heard WWSYS, I thought, "My, what an annoying song, but wow, this girl's got a voice!" so I went and bought the CD, and while the song grew on me, I would still rather fast forward to "Little Sister" and just let the CD play from there. (Until I heard Jewel do it on Hard Rock Live where she put all that feeling into it and added some lyrics and changed the rhythm in some places, now I love the song) And I fell in love with YWMFM. Then I heard it on the radio. And I didn't like it. "Where's the feeling, where's the passion of the CD's version?" I'll probably feel the same about FG. So I know whatever first comes out from her new album will probably evoke the same response from me. (This really was a meaningless post. I think I'll be collecting my 10 cents now--or was it two pennies?) JEWEL RULES!!! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 23:38:54 -0700 From: howenow@imagen.net (Adrian Duplessis) Subject: An Allegedly Dry Year -- Steve Poltz message to The Rugburns e-mail list (reprinted here for EDAs) Welcome to May, all my little Sideburns! Once again, I'm dictating this letter from the comfort of my couch here in San Diego, while the sap, aka Joe Daly, types my mail. (He doesn't know what I put behind his freezer -jd). Phew! We're fresh off the road from a special little tour with a special little girl named Jewel? Do any of you know her? You might- she's the one singing in my video. I'm sick of all this crap about people asking me about what it's like to be in that video! People should ask her, "Hey, what's it like to be in a video with Steve Poltz??" I mean, am I wrong? I helped write the song, and I helped make the video? RIght? Right? So that means that it's equally MY video, too, right? Oh well, that's just another way The Man is trying to keep me down. But we had fun fun fun until our daddies took the t-bird away on tour with little Jewel. We love her. It was fun to wear something onstage besides t-shirts portraying animals copulating. We also enjoyed getting to ride in a tour bus, and playing Retail Store. Stinky would always be the cantankerous, but lovable "Mr. Whitman," and John would be the neighborhood juvenile delinquent who would mug people for their lunch money. I'd play "Shelbert the Soda Jerk," and whenever Jewel or one of the roadies would come onto our van, Stinky would say, "If you're not buying anything, get out of my store! And you better pay for that magazine if you're gonna read it!" John would just grab them and start punching them really hard in the stomach, and when they fell to the floor, he'd call them "Mama's boys," and rifle through their pockets for change. That didn't go over as smoothly with Jewel as the roadies. I'd just say, "Can I jerk you a cool one?" Then one day, John beat up Stinky when Stinky was shelving pitted prunes, and John got carried away when he rifled through Stinky's pants, which came off, and well... John.. um.. took a few liberties with Stinky.... and well... we just don't play that game anymore. So we're going back on the road. Are any of you coming to see us, or are you all going to watch that thing on TV? We start tomorrow night in Ventura, which is a stupid name for a city. They should call it "Gruesome City of Urban Doom." I don't know why- they just should. Then we're going to tour the shit out of the Northern US of A, hitting all sorts of fun places like Rock Island, Lawrence, Toledo, and Northampton. We're also hitting a lot of casinos, massage parlors, nondenominational churches, bingo matches, rodeos, all male leather reviews, all female feather reviews, Pepsi bottling plants, and closed ski resorts. Sometimes I have to tell John that he can't just go up to strangers and tell them that if they don't take his picture immediately, he'll punch them. He's shaky that way. We're trying to get to as many cities as we can, and that makes us all tinkle. If we're not coming to your city on this leg of the tour, it's probably because of something YOU did. WHat do you think of that? THAT"s what I'm talking about. Actually, we're going to go back into the studio in late June and start recording our new album, which will have all the songs we played on the Jewel tour that everyone asks about but which don't appear on any of the albums for some weird reason. So hopefully by the end of the fall, we'll have our FOURTH album out, and let me tell you, it's like birthin' babies- they don't get no easier, but they're all cute as hell and full of crap! Waitaminit... what the hell does that mean. God, I have to lay off the tapioca binging or I'll be in real trouble. This time, if you come see us, please bring just regular pudding for us. It's fun, it's edible, it's a lubricant!!!! OK, I have to go now. Our manager Bob wants to go to the dentist. Bob doesn't have any dental problems, but he likes to go to different dentist's offices and sit in the waiting room, and act really fidgety, look around a lot and flinch, and read Hilights magazine, and every so often mutter, "Oh, Holy Mother of Sweet Baby Jesus, I think I'm going to fucking die if that guy drills me..." He then begins to weep, gets up, and starts to run out of the waiting room, but before he does, he screams at all the other now-attentive waiting room dwellers- "In the name of all that's holy, get the hell out of there before that maniac drills a hole up your ass!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!" and the people look out the window and see him pulling at his ears, running madly down the street, weaving between pedestrians, and sometimes stopping at parked cars to weep some more. Then he laughs, goes to another dentist, and repeats the same thing. I think he's weird. Now let me get these chaps off and get out of here. Yours in Christ, Steven J. Poltz THE USUAL AND EVER-GROWING ADMINISTRATIVE CRAP As always, we can be contacted at RugburnsSD@aol.com. Thanks for keeping the annoying chain letters/forwards away from us.
