All EDAs Who is coming so far? Many EDAs that have never been to a gathering have RSVP. Lots of new faces to meet. I was taking for granted that most of the regulars would be there, but many have not responded yet. Please let me know as soon as possible. Larry and Sinjin were the first to commit. They are traveling down from LA for the Rugburns show at Java Joe's on Thursday. Then on Friday it is all the way back to Ventura for another show. Finally on Sunday they will be back to San Diego for BagelBash. Besides EDAs, many celebrity guests are expected What is BagelBash for? It is an event that will kick off a week-long fundraising effort benefiting former Einstein Bagel employee James Kalanick, victim of a hit and run accident that has left him in motorized wheelchair. Moneys raised will help James get a specially equipped van. How did EDA get involved? Jewel said that we should help others instead of gifts for her birthday. She suggested helping James. Why are we really coming together? We are coming together for a celebration of hope. Not only hope for James but for all of our dreams as well. When we look into James eyes we will not see fear, disappointment and loss. We will see reflections of our own hope of a better life for us and all other living breathing souls on this earth. What do I do next? Two things. Let me know that you are coming. And don't forget to send checks for the raffle. It is not too late. If you send me an email telling me the amount you are sending, you will be included even if the check hasn't arrived in time. I will include a raffle ticket with your name for every dollar you send. My apologies for not remembering people's names who thought up the ideas- there are just too many of you out there and I'm just aweful with names. ^_^;;; 1) Jewel singing on a darkened stage alone- shot in black and white or a mixture of black and white and color (either way the background will always be in black and white.) Camera would move around the darkened background, video would probably include a number of close ups and fade outs to her lonesome, lighted by a single soft spotlight. Very emotional, very simple, honest, true to Jewel. 2) A color video shot out on the beach of Cape Cod with the white picket fences over sand dunes. This was definitely a lovely idea. My thoughts of it are that it would seem to work best if Jewel was simply singing on the dunes, her back to a white fence and maybe a shot of a New England house in the background. For the story line have an actor and an actress play the parts with Jewel's role simply as storyteller, the video fading in and out between Jewel and the actors living out happier or sadder times in their relationship. I think this would have a more powerful punch, focusing on the words and the message. The shots would then alternate between the actor/actress living out the drama of the lyrics, etc and different panning shots of Jewel singing, the ocean in front of her, the dunes behind, closeups, etc. I think the beach video would definitely be less solemn than the stage video, but equally emotional. Obviously the beach video would cost a lot more to produce, but dramatic and equally emotional I think. Videos that tell a story are very nice in my opinion, especially if they're done right and give a sense of mystery in the resolution of the drama that unfolds in words and music. :) Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 16:56:01 -0400 (EDT) From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Please, check this out.... While WWSYS and POY are good choices, they are a little obvious. I think you can really wow your teacher if you do a little interpretation of songs that aren't as clear. 1. "Little Sister"--the message is obvious, but I think it goes even beyond just drug use--it goes to the core of why so many people turn to drugs: the superficiality of modern society ("white bread and beer"--how much more superficial can you get) I used this song for my "Rock in American Culture" class [Yes, I know, joke class, but you all try carrying Milton, The Late Romantic Poets, the Crusades, and a Senior Thesis around on your shoulders (please no jokes where someone takes this literally)and see what you will choose for your last 3 credits]. Mark, if you'd like to take a look at it, I think I could dig it up for you. 2. "Amen"--I think you could read a lot into this one: "A forest fire nibbles at your veins, crawls up your arms, runs away with your mind, burns dry thoughts like leaves" (heroin?) Ultimately, I think it is how when we face problems we can end up questioning God--his existence and goodness (open for discussion) 3. "Satellite"--how we are so concerned with superficialities we cannot feed our souls (could be used as a companion for "Little Sister" or WWSYS.) I did this one for my RAC class too, so same offer goes. 4. "Silver Lining"--it seems that everything in life that's fun is bad for us--that sucks! (I would use a little more formal language in the class though) Jules ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 15:19:28 -0700 From: "Shaun" Subject: NJC: I'm still here! Video : Starring Ms. Jewel Kilcher, Male Companion possibly Steve Poltz = again. The cottage has a dirt driveway and a widow's watch. For those who are = unfamiliar with Cape Style beach houses, a widow's watch is a deck = normally on a high level of the house. His cigarette falls and splashes = to the puddle under him into the driveway. Jewel's scenes of romance and = fun have now faded. A flashback scene of about twenty-five to thirty = seconds of them fighting ending with her throwing him out (maybe = slapping him) occurs. She runs to the phone through the living room. Who = she calls on the other end is a mystery, but a sole tear runs down her = cheek. She moves to the front door, slowly opening it. He hears the dull squeak = of the hinge. Turning around still on his knees, he opens his arms = begging for her forgiveness. All you see is his mouth obviously = stumbling, trying to utter out words of apology. He moves to the front = porch, around three feet away form Jewel he stops. He again opens his = arms and she knocks them away. She raises her arm in front of her, turns = her arm over and opens her palm. Revealing a dime which she forces him = to take. (The significance is this, the dime says "Call someone who = cares honey, you've hurt me to badly this time!") The man slowly steps down the porch stairs, head hung low. Slowly he = walk back to the beat up Ford (c). Camera moves to Jewel's back, who is = now looking out of a second story window at him. Her hand is pressed = against the glass, fingers spread open. Lightning still flashes every so = often. They guy kicks the mud, throw's the dirtied jacket into the = truck, punches the fender, grabbing his fist in pain. He gets in, arms = crossed over the steering wheel, bead buried into his arms.=20 Her hand clenches ever so slowly into the sign language symbol for "I = love you." Camera pans around to her face, still holding a saddened = look. More tears are rolling down her cheeks, not balling, but = continuous. The camera zooms in on her right eye, but the weird part is = that her retina (whatever the colored part is) is in color, the color of = Jewel's marvelously Emerald eyes, the rest is ALL b & w . A single tear = swells up and rolls slowly down, with lightning softly flashing the = scene fades to black.... ***********END VIDEO SCRIPT*********** Okay, that's the script so far.. how is it?? Okay everyone, please follow these guidelines for all replies. 1: Subject =3D VIDEO SCRIPT SUGGESTION 2: All replies are to be mailed to: scorpion@ici.net with cc to = jmweller@bellsouth.net 3: Please do NOT send suggestions to the list, I will be sending out = updates out every =20 now and then with all current suggestions listed. 4: Under NO circumstances shall you flood Mr. BB (Abershaw@aol.com) = about things like forwarding stuff to Jewel, he should not be = requested to do it, it isn't his job. 5: Keep it fun. The town = of >Mendocino, which Murder She Wrote directors filmed Jessica Flecher's >Cabot Cove. It is styled like the homes found through out the New >England area. Why do I think that it should be filmed there? They = have >amazing sea cliffs that meet plateaus and it is such a visual >treat.(Plus really great sun sets!!!) Sorry, I live about thirty minutes north of Cape Cod, so I am kind of = partial to it. I believe that the Cape even though houses on the West = Coast may be the same, has it's own mystique. The Cape is where it all = started for the U.S. and I think that it would work into the video and = song, Foolish Games is in a way a song about new beginnings, Cape Cod = was a new beginning for a powerful nation. It also boasts a non built up = look that makes it look more "Jewel-Like" image to say, simple, and = beautiful. I'm sorry if my argument does not totally fill you in on my = reasoning. =3D) Another thing, I had a scene with a sun-rise, the West = Coast doesn't experience sea-side Sun-Rises. =3D) They are even more = spectacular than sun-sets sometimes... There are so many other things to do in Southern California that are cheaper, and less plastic. Why don't we all go on a hike and picnic lunch, or go to the beach or something. Jewel herself wouldn't go to Disneyland, she would rather do something more akin to the natural environmnet. Moreover, Disneyland in the middle of June is the peak season when it is incredibly crowded. Finally, Anaheim is not centrally located in Southern California. I suggest we do something less expensive and more oriented to the environment, state park, beach, or mountains. (It would be cooler as well). They come from two wonderfully helpful EDAs so far, Naveen = Rao, and That Little Voice Inside Your Head (Name not disclosed for = unsureness if I should). Suggestions shall be posted in order as they happen in the video. Suggestion 1 / Naveen Rao : *** ORGINAL SCRIPT SECTION *** She moves to the front door, slowly opening it. (The significance is this, the dime says "Call someone who = cares honey, you've hurt me to badly this time!") SUGGESTION : Naveen feels that it would be better that Jewel instead of = knocking his arms away she should just push them down with a = disappointed look on her face. It takes away the harshness (Which I = admit does not suit Jewel), and adds to the "You've hurt me to bad this = time!" Feeling.=20 EDITOR'S NOTE : I believe that this is a VERY valid point and a great = suggestion. Please read the following updated Script Section to validate = the content change. Thanks, and keep up the good work!! Oh yeah, and = thanks for correcting me on the iris, not the retina. =3D) *** UPDATED SCRIPT SECTION *** She moves to the front door, slowly opening it. All you see is his mouth obviously = stumbling, trying to utter out words of apology. He moves to the front = porch, around three feet away form Jewel he stops. Revealing a dime which she forces him to take. A camera = shot of a zoom in of the dime (Head Side) that is clear, which the focus = changes to see his confused face of awe behind it. (The significance is = this, the dime says "Call someone who cares honey, you've hurt me to = badly this time!") Suggestion 2 / TLVIYH <--I think we know who this is. =3D) *** ORIGINAL SCRIPT SECTION *** Her hand clenches ever so slowly into the sign language symbol for "I = love you." Camera pans around to her face, still holding a saddened = look. More tears are rolling down her cheeks, not balling, but = continuous. A single tear swells up and rolls slowly = down, with lightning softly flashing the scene fades to black.... SUGGESTION : TLVIYH feels that an added part of Jewel tracing a raindrop = on it's course from the top of the window to the bottom with her "I love = you" hand would add effect. EDITOR'S NOTE : Great! I love this, we are 2 for 2 on suggestions so = far. I believe this adds an effect of not only visual loss, but shows = that she is longing to hold on, she wants to keep with her man, but = cannot because unfortunately everything has an end, including the = raindrop's trail. Thanks for the input, we hope to see more!! =3D) Well people, that is how it will be done. Detailed and very personal. = Everyone gets their credit, no one is left out. I will post a message = following this that will have the TOTAL repost of the video script with = updated sections.=20 The subject will be "FG VIDEO SCRIPT UPDATE REPOST #3" ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #322 ***************************
