Unfortunately the contest wasn't as fair as it could have been as you will see. I just couldn't let this one go.  So thank you all, I enjoyed reading all the plees, and original thoughts!  Sorry for pasting all this but I thought it would be cool to beam this. Thanx Dan
Well, being a rather new EDA I haven't been able to collect many Jewel items yet. The
only thing is that I do not want the poster. I want to give the poster to a friend of mine. She
is like a sister to me....
Last week she was in a terrible accident, due to the driver being drunk (Dumb mistake to
get in) they had a crash. There were 6 teenagers in the car, four girls and two guys, all four
girls that I am friends with.
Well, this girl and I were supposed to attend the Boston Jewel concert at the Orpheum
Theater. We were not able to attend due to last minute changes in our lives. She looks up to
Jewel and admires her greatly for she herself has been through many many hardships in her life,
from being beaten up to raped. Her life has been very unstable and heat-felt, she holds on to
anything that makes her feel good with all of her heart.
The accident left two of the girls dead, one being her close-knit cousin and the other
being her best friend, both of them being friends of mine also. This tragedy has totally struck
hard home and destroyed all of her hopes and dreams. Not to mention her own internal head
injuries and back spasms.
I want to do something good for somebody. I would love to be able to give this as a maybe
late birthday gift to her. I hope to cheer her up. For her to hang it on the last blank spot on
her bedroom wall, so in the morning she can look at our angel and realize that life gets better,
that life will turn around. I believe a little piece of a role model like Jewel will give her the
courage to go on with her life and to try to things back in order......

I realize that I am not the only person with friends with problems, but  I really feel
that this is a great gift for a person in need. I would be glad to pay for shipping and even for
the poster itself if you graciously choose me. If you wish to check me out, see if I am telling
the truth. Hit the electronic newspapers about Taunton, MA, USA. And on last Wed night this
accident took place. The victims Tara Martin, and Heather Machea (sp?). People with names, two
more victims of Drunk Driving.....

This nationwide "call to action" will dramatically raise awareness of the work being done by the non-profit organization on behalf of victims of sexual assault. Hundreds of radio stations and television outlets have been asked to interrupt their regular programming at noon (local time) that Friday to play a request that could save a life. National cable outlets MTV and VH1 have already confirmed their participation and support. Stations that answer the call will play a public service announcement from Atlantic recording artist and RAINN co-founder, Tori Amos. The specially recorded PSA will include information about RAINN, which operates America's only national hotline for sexual assault victims. The toll-free, 24-hour number is 1-800-656-HOPE. Amos' message will be followed by her song, the poignant "Silent All These Years," originally found on her "Little Earthquakes" debut album. It was the lyrics to "Silent All These Years" that, in so profoundly moving those in Tori's audience confronting issues of abuse, prompted the artist to launch RAINN. For that reason, "Silent All These Years" has served as the musical touchstone for the RAINN mission. The PSA & song, made available together on a promotional CD, will be shipped May 2nd to radio stations across the country; a video version will be made available for television on May 14th via satellite. RAINN Day was announced today at a press conference in the U.S. Capitol by Reps. Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.) and Darlene Hooley (D-OR). The announcement was followed by a reception in honor of RAINN; the Honorary Chairs of the reception were Rep. Molinari and Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD). Among the 35 Honorary Co-Chairs honoring RAINN are Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS), House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX), House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (D-MO), and Rep. Vic Fazio (D-CA). Initial funding for RAINN was provided by the Atlantic Group and Warner Music Group. In January, cK Calvin Klein launched "Unlock The Silence," a yearlong promotional fundraising and advertising campaign on behalf of RAINN. Additional support has been provided by NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences), MCI and the Jacobs Family Foundation. RAINN receives no government funding. Every two minutes, someone is sexually assaulted in the U.S. Only 32% of these attacks are reported to the police. The aim of RAINN is to change that reality. Since it was established in July, 1994, RAINN -- which automatically and confidentially connects callers to the rape crisis center closest to them -- has aided over 142,000 survivors of sexual abuse. 628 rape crisis centers nationwide are now part of the RAINN network. RAINN is based in Washington, DC. RAINN's Board of Directors is made up of a cross-section of business people, experienced non-profit organizers, and counseling professionals with a background in sexual assault issues. Tori Amos chairs the RAINN Advisory Board, which includes Representative Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.), Calvin Klein, and Atlantic Senior Vice President Vicky Germaise. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 07:36:11 -0400 From: Andrew Chandler Subject: Re: NJC: Abortion That was the point. Hi Scott, Tara is a favourite among some EDA's :-) Her last name is MacLean and she has one CD out on Nettwerk Records called _Silence_. Like Jewel, I like seeing her live much more than on CD... ...I think the video is for "Evidence" The second to last time she was in Guelph she said she really didn't like the video, too commercial I think for her tastes. She's very nice and her on stage banter is reminiscent of an early Jewel. If you see her in concert go say "hi" afterwards ... :-) This is from the Nettwerk site: "Tara MacLean was discovered singing on a ferry boat off the Canada's west coast. It was her clear, powerful voice and introspective lyrics that attracted the people at Nettwerk. She then signed to the label in April 1995 after recording her song Let Her Feel The Rain for a Nettwerk benefit for Rape Crisis Centers called Lit From Within. The song also appeared on a Nettwerk compilation titled Slowbrew. After these two releases many consumers contacted Nettwerk looking for a full length release that had not been recorded yet. For the months of October and November of 1995, Tara went to San Francisco's Brilliant Studios to record with producer Norm Kerner (Sky Cries Mary, Suzanne Little, American Music Club). Look for the album out in the spring of 1996." Its a little dated but there's also this: 'Tara on Silence: "The album is called Silence because that is the place where songs are born. Out of a void something has to be created, to find light in darkness. "When you are spending time in solitude or out in the woods, there can be so much chatter in your head that when it stops, you can filter out distractions and hear the original voice. Truth speaks to you in silence. It is the only place you can hear it." ' At the Tara part of the Nettwerk site you can also listen to clips from the CD. http://www.nettweb.com/artists/TarMa.html Take Care, James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 07:46:05 -0600 (MDT) From: Chopped Liver Subject: NJC: Who has the Rolling Stone Cover photo Someone posted that they had the Rolling Stone photos of Jewel on their website. The little asides or parenthetic comments throughout were silly, sometimes incoherent and generally annoying, adding nothing to the article. The style was sloppy and incohesive, she vacilated between being glib and ernest without segue. Although the information provided was interesting and revealing, I did not have the confidence in the author to be certain that it was accurate. So, I give her a C, averaging a B for content and a D for composition and style, and wonder if The Rolling Stone is raiding the ranks of a local junior college student newspaper for their reporters. I'm not expecting the Rockfest preformance to be over 30 minutes to tell you the truth. That's just the way things go. Look at the Jingel Ball set lists from last year (late 96), they are only like 5 songs long. Remeber, they have to give the other preformers there some stage time too. andrewc@gte.net also wrote (and this is the NJC part comes in): >What will people say when the penny is abolished? Just my two nickels? I have to imagian that they would still say "My 2 cents". It's just a figure of speach. The saying is so well known that people will still say it even if the penny is gone. Hell, I still say album when refering to CD's. - -Ashe Mayfair: The Longshot Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 11:15:23 -0400 (EDT) From: EveryDay Angel Subject: Card update!!! There are really alot of talented EDA's! The J-cards are excellent as well. I think it's great that Eric put this project together (thanks to Katie's idea originally). It's something that is truly one-of-a-kind and really demonstrates how special the EDA's are. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Apr 1997 15:42:11 -0700 From: howenow@imagen.net (Adrian Duplessis) Subject: EDA volunteer efforts to be recognized Hi everyone: EDAs have come up with so many good ideas and inspirations recently it's hard to keep track of all the positive developments. It's been pointed out that we need some way to keep track for ourselves, for Jewel and for the rest of the world. I recall Mr. BB posting about having recorded 48 different ideas people put forward for Jewel's birthday recognition. Many of those would have been of the community involvement type. Then there's the blood drive and the JPK Trust and the formative EDA Foundation. I'm happy to volunteer to help organize all this info -- unless someone else is already doing this and doesn't need any more help. (Otherwise I'm happy to work with you.) The gifts that are special to Jewel just for her birthday (like the pillow and guitar picks) we'll all know about anyway. What I'm talking about is recording and recognizing all the EDA efforts to give blood, suppport various charities, help out in the community and family (from RAINN, to the SPCA, to sisters/brothers, elederly, whomever) - -- extending an EDA hand to our fellow creatures. Igor tells me that MTV is doing a story this week on peoples' volunteerism. Anyone know what this is about? I don't see MTV here in Canada -- so any details on what they're up to would be helpful. Does the MTV story have to do with the Volunteer Day or Week that I read a little about (Colin Powell and others promoting this)? If so, we could let them know the same volunteer spirit is alive in all the ideas and inspirations of EDAs. Let me know what you think and what you're doing -- everything counts! The format was very inconsistent. I did like all the pictures of Jewel except that 2-page black and white one....looked sort of like an overdone Jennifer Aniston...nothing like Jewel. I'm not sure why Jewel even posed for this pic. It's nothing like anything she's done...including all the other pics in the magazine. She had a somewhat natural look going on, I think that reflects her true beauty. Tying in with the opening lyrics thread, lately I have had the opening verse to "Innocence Maintained" running in my head: "Ophelia drowned in the water, crushed by her own weight; Hitler loved little blue-eyed boys, and it drove him to hate. Birds always grow silent before the night descends, 'Cuz nature has a funny way of breaking what does not bend." so I'd be going around singing the song, not thinking about what I was singing, when I caught myself a few times starting out -- "Hitler drowned in the water --" and I laughed at myself then the next day, when it finally seemed I'd gotten over singing it that way, I caught myself singing "...birds always grow silent, before the night descends, 'Cuz Hitler has a funny way --" which served to make me laugh even more. Just thought I'd share. Have a blessed day! Bless and Be Blessed; spread the Love!
