Hi, I've gotten over a dozen private requests to repost the info below. So here it is again. I hope this clears up a lot of speculation. ****************************************** Hi all EDAs everywhere, Please take some time & read this in its entirety. Something wonderful is beginning to happen. I want to take this opportunity to fill in those that are interested or may have recieved wrong or incomplete information recently. Back around the first of the year, my first friend on this list, Duff, was travelling through New England. Being in CT, I of course, insisted she pay me a visit. A day or two before she dropped by, I was telling Dennis Harris that I was excited to finally meet her. He wanted to join us & I welcomed him, of course. Those that know Dennis, know how contagious his enthusiasm can be & before I knew it we had a little mini gathering here at the old MrBB Studios. In attendance were Duff, Dennis, Amy, Rachel, Mike,Tegan, AmyJo & myself. This is what became known as Duffstock. All it really was, was a bunch of friends getting together. As the day progressed, we all began discussing if it was possible to begin organizing events that would be fun for EDAs while doing selfless acts of kindness for others. As this discussion progressed we began to see that a foundation could be set up to help facilitate these gatherings while helping to unite the EDAs in support of worthy causes. Simultaneously, on the west coast, very similar discussions were going on with Larry, Igor & other thoughtful West Coast area EDAs. They brought new and different great ideas to the discussion. It became apparent that something great clearly was beginning to take shape. I discussed these ideas with Lenedra & Jewel. They were not only supportive, but LOVED the ideas. They asked us to get ourselves more organized & to keep them informed. For lack of anything more original, we all began referring to this "vague project" as the EDA Foundation (or EDAF). Over the last few months other gatherings (such as Lizstock & Hot Dog Fest) took place & these ideas were discussed even more. One thing that was becoming very clear was that amongst the EDAs, a vast talent & resource pool existed. The problem was how to tap into that. Since many of the people that attended these gatherings were already knowledgable about the "EDAF idea", Lenedra suggested I form a discussion commitee to organize & to make the EDAF a reality. At exactly that moment, all the "Jewel's birthday" discussion came up on the list. Many wanted to support a charity or worthy cause in Jewel's name rather than give physical gifts which parralleled everything the EDAF people had been unsuccessfully trying to figure out. I kept a list of every single suggestion that came over the list or was written to me about. Within a few days I already had 48 (!) excellent suggestions. I spoke to Lenedra explaining what was going on. I told her we have so many good suggestions that I'm at a loss what to do. Much to my surprise, Jewel had a completely different suggestion. Her suggestion was the JPK Fund as you all know about & most thankfully support. It seemed to us that all of these things going on were headed in the same positive direction & that we needed a commitee to help utilize all the talent & resources on the list. We never thought in terms of leaders & followers. We only thought of talent, resources & organizers to promote the effort. The people familiar with the EDAF idea already were obvious choices to knowledgably discuss all this. Everyone involved so far has already shown great care and love for this list, but we've barely begun. Because this whole EDAF concept is so disorganized, up until now we have not made it public knowledge. It was basically moving along from one EDA gathering to another by word of mouth & a few chat room meetings over the past 2 or 3 weeks. Even though we are still very disorganized, we feel that all the answers lie amongst all of you reading this now. That is whats been going on behind the scenes. The "JPK fund EDA list project" is simply a beginning. We know the EDAs are capable of far greater things, in the future. We need constructive critisism & help from the vast talent available amongst the EDAs. At this point in time the EDAF is little more than a concept. We have come up with 2 points that are important to all of us & I hope you'll agree. They are: First, the aspect of participating in, supporting and promoting events, future gatherings and worthy social causes, locally by list members and volunteers throughout regions of the country, as well as on a larger scale through events and causes backed by the participation and support of the EDAs as a whole; and Second, the honoring of people whose "everyday" acts of beauty and kindness (which often go unnoticed and which otherwise might well go unrecognized) make the world a better place in small ways. There's never been a secret EDAF plot or anything like that. Just a bunch of good hearted well intentioned EDAs struggling to make everything even better for everyone. Thats the truth! Seriously think about these things, post your ideas TO THE LIST & be nice to each other........ Alan(MrBB) Hi Everyone, I think what Alan and the others are proposing is an excellent idea. So without further delay, here's an idea you might want to play with. The laughter of children is the happiest sound you will ever hear. There is no sight more beautiful then that of child's face smiling. They touch our hearts and when we touch theirs, we are touching something very special indeed. These are the little Angels we see and hear around us everyday. When they smile, God smiles. The world is a tough place. To be an adult is a tough job. Remember what it was like to be a child? When you really did not know how tough the world was? As we grow and become adults we tend to forget what it was like to run and play. To have fun. That's what being a child is all about. Laughter, smiles and fun. These are good things. Here's my idea. Children love play grounds. There are far to few of them. We could do something about that. EDA's could sponsor community playground projects. You'll find that it is a very easy thing to get support for in your communities. Businesses will donate money. Local Gov't will often donate land. People will volunteer to help you build them. You could call it the "Angels at Play" program. Think about it my friends. EDA Playgrounds were children run, smile and laugh. You want to know what being in Heaven is like? Go watch and listen to the laughter of children at play, in a playground you built with your own two hands. Angels at play make the sweetest music your ears will ever hear. Your Friend, R. D. Alan, thanks for the inspiration. Your friend, Rich Butler Words Words are such mysterious things, But isn't that, what poets claim. Can heal a heart, create a smile, Or rip in two your very soul. Words are fragile, yet powerful things. The spoken sword, that cuts' both ways Written, spoken etched in stone, Just reminders to ourselves, we're not really alone. It's Words I shout to Heaven, Ideas carried on the wind, Words in dreams, in the night, Vanished now, fled the light. The Words of dreams, I've written down Become such cherished, remembered things. Words I've written in passions name, Set the pages all aflame, Words of poetry, gently stroke your thoughts Words that cry out in our songs. Tell you all those things, I meant to say, all along. Words are just our funny way. Of letting our hearts come out to play. Words can hurt, Can be so mean, Cutting straight through us, So deep, so clean, Leave nothing in their wake, Just the lost and fractured dreams. And Words can scream. To no one at all, And become Words forgotten Like words never said at all. Words can heal, Dry up all the rain, Drive away all our pain Words spoken softly, Can reach a thousand ears. Or just one, you hold so dear. Words can reach out , Across the very years. Touch so many hearts, Reach so many souls Wash away all our tears. Words, can say I love you, Can say your all I need, Words can say, just take my hand. Together we will stand Even words, written in the sands. Are words we understand. Words that let you know, Should have never let you go, My last words are these, Final words, to you from me, Whispered on the wind, Carried straight to your heart, My Words are that I love you, Perhaps you've known that from the start My words are all I have, I know they're not really much Just spoken from my heart. Write them down, Don't let them be forgotten. Write them upon your heart. And like the word called forever, I will always be there. Written for Jewel 16APR97 R. D. I responded privately to Mr. Baumers concerns, but wonder that there was no public discussion of those two songs. They can be very disturbing is misunderstood. And, last is Rachel Kramer Bussel's post, (2,473) JC: Jewel's JAP comment. There were several points raised here that could have benefited from discussion. These include the questions "did Jewel really say it?", "was it taken out of context?", "why, if they didn't make it to the Rolling Stone article, were they published on their website at all?". All of these posts deserved more attention on this list that someone's obvious troll of wanting nude pictures of Jewel and the resulting conflagration. For those who don't know what Pop-Up Video is, it's a show that plays videos and 'pops-up' little trivia facts relevant (or semi-relevant) to the video. It's pretty interesting. I caught most of it on tape. Here are the pop-ups I remember (not in quotes) and the ones I recorded (in quotes). Filming started at 8 am. Eggs were served for breakfast at the shoot. "Jewel had a vegetarian omlet." "Jewels are often displayed on velvet to enhance their appearance." "Jewel's fromer boyfriend Steve Poltz of the Rugburns." "They met while Jewel was singing in coffee houses in San Diego in 1994." "Well-proportioned" jewels are the most valuable." "They are also the most attractive." "Steve wasn't meant for her - they broke up after writing this song together." "Jewel was rumored to be dating Sean Penn in late 1995." "Penn directed the first video for this song." "In Sean's version Jewel watches her boyfriend make out with another woman." "Art Director's arm" (sticking out through cloud-painted board) "In real life Sean wed actress Robin Wright in April 1996." "He wasn't meant for Jewel either." "Jewel decided Penn's video 'Didn't fit the song' and amde a new video with her old boyfriend." "Jewel's 'shedding her skin' symbolizes her growing out ofa past relationship." "Snakes shed their skin up to 8 times a year." "The average person sheds an entire layer of skin every month." "Jewel has said that writing songs is her therapy." "'Jewel Therapy' involves rubbing gems over your body to boost creativity and confidence." "The director of this video also made 'Long December' for the Counting Crows." "Fake snow" (scene with snow falling around Jewel) "Some jewels have a strong odor- Amber smells like cream." "A poem by Jewel written in magic marker by a production assistant." (poem on her back) "Writing peoms on a partner's body is considered an act of seduction in Asia." "Jewel is not rumored to be dating the assistant." "The average dream lasts for 20 minutes." "Dream psychologists say that reptiles and hats often represent the 'family jewels'." "Jewel's family is from Alaska - her grandfatehr helped draft the state constitution." "Jewel left Alaska at 16 to study music, dance and sculpture at a school in MI." * "One of her sculptures is still on display at the school." "Diamonds may be forever but this Jewel has been on the charts for more than 60 weeks." "Jewel majored in opera at the Interlochen Arts Academy. She decided opera wasn't meant for her after learning it might take her 10 years to become successful at it. Instead, she learned to play guitar and signed a record contract less tahn 2 years after graduating high school." * -Can any EDA's near Interlochen in Michigan get a picture of Jewel's sculpture? I would love to see it, and I'm sure many other EDA's would too! OK, now that I've done my good deed for the day let me indulge myself by talking a little about Jewel's upcoming FG video. I was stoked when Mr. BB said it was postponed till the first week of June because now I hope they get a chance to come up with some ideas for the video. As I mentioned before, I really don't think a standard performance video is right for this song. Besides every other video on MTV being a performance shot, I think this song is so beautiful that Jewel can do so much with it. YWMFM is one of the best videos I've ever seen (yeah, I know I'm totally biased...) and I think they can do the same with FG. I know whenever I listen to the song I come up with little 'plots' for a video in my mind, and I'm sure Jewel could find a director who appreciates her music and shares her vision for the video...or she can even direct the video herself, she's that talented! If she does decide to do a performance video because that's her vision for the song, at least she could have some secondary 'plot' going on around the performance just to distinguish it from 'every other goddam performance video.' Well that's my blah, blah, blah for the day...I actually posted, I hope you're happy now Harris!
