I was (and may soon again be) the T-shirt Guy, Phil Kelnhofer. I am writing to everyone with a sense of sadness surrounding me. In the past few days I have watched people I call friends (who will remain nameless) insult each other with everything they could think of. I have also watch a group of people (the EDA's) go from a community of friendship into a wraught full of bitterness and anger. When I first joined the list (way back in Dec. of '95), I read for a few days and was impressed by the tight-knit group of friends that seemed to exist. A few months later when the EDA's decided we should have a t-shirt made so we could identify each other at concerts. I volunteered to take charge of the project. When JewelStock was announced, I put all my efforts into having a shirt made in time for the show so that we would have mementos of those two great nights. At JS Night 3 in New Hampshire, I had one of the greatest times of my life. It was the first EDA gathering where the Jewel concert was second to the EDA party. In January when a friend I had made through the list came forward with the idea to take the EDA's a step further and become a group that would try to bring hapiness and postive change to everyone, I thought it was one of the greatest ideas I had heard. But in the past week things went wrong. People became angry that they were excluded from this group. Meanwhile on the mailing list itself, flames became the norm, out numbering the posts. I admit that I (who once upon a time would post multiple times a day) have not been "active" on the list lately, but I still hate to see it falling apart like it is. After seeing Jewel (and several EDA's) again about a month and a half ago. I decided to get of my butt and finish the list T-shirt so that all the EDA's could meet each other a get the chance to form the friendships I have formed over the list. Now with the shirt all-but finished, I am worried that there will not be a list for me to make them for. Please, Everyday Angels, remember how we made this list great and do all that you can to make it that again. If you have a problem with something some else posts, write them privately and explain what bothered you. Please, do not mudsling in public. Something beautiful is dying. Helen asked: >Pardon my ignorance but isn't there a strong history of excommunication in the >Catholic church for people who didn't fit into a certain ideal by getting There's a strong history in pretty much every religion that includes torture and killing those who fail to believe. Perhaps this is as useful a way to delimit religion from cult, in that cults are groups we're afraid will destroy a bunch of lives, while religions have proven their ability. :D Seriously, I do believe the Roman Catholic Church itself has indeed modified much of its doctrine. In cases of divorce, current policy, at least in the US, seems to involve a fair amount of counseling with a priest, etc... The church actually counts legal marriages as slightly different than church marriage, in that couples who are married by a justice of the peace, or a Vegas drive-thru chapel, et al, are also counseled and such, to talk of the reasons why the RCC places such emphasis on weddings under official church "approval." While divorce is most definitely frowned upon, as is infidelity, the modern church is trying to reach out to these people, not cast them aside. >divorced or some other such "sin". On an individual level Catholics might be >forgiving but I think there is a lot of evidence to suggest that people have >and do still get pushed out for various reasons.... Some do, but it is extremely rare. Most who leave the church do so of their own accord, and concepts like "repentance" are recognized, in that former members are allowed to seek readmittance. >>It is not our job to judge people, whether they kill, steal, commit >>adultery, or commit some other sin. That job is left up to God. =) > >yeah but sometimes the church does it for God and that's not always right. And sometimes individuals do it, and it's also not right. We all make mistakes, what joins us is that we're all, ultimately, seeking the truth. That so many different groups and individuals have chosen so many different places to search, means everyone has something to teach everyone else. It is no more right to judge the Mormon or Catholic churches, than it is to judge the individual people of them. BTW, if anyone haven't read "The Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspectice On The Teachings Of Jesus," by the Dalai Lama, I'd suggest adding it to everyone's list. good reading. :) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@best.com, negativl@netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Apr 1997 00:08:34 EDT From: sparksmark@juno.com (Sparks the Everyday Angel) Subject: Re: NJC : Knowing how late I am with my digests, I'll take 10... =) Ahh...I feel much betta now. =) Mark - --- Inside my heart there's an empty room. I hadn't been keeping up with Jewel news or events. But this shouting match was so entertaining that I had to read a few digests just to see how it ended up. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in ourselves it is just pathetic. We all take ourselves way to seriously... My second bit is a question. Has anyone else drifted form the list? I used to always come home excitied and check my mail. Now I just kinda ignore it. I check for important Jewel news but otherwise I am just kinda "out there". I still want to go to an EDA gathering, and I enjoy the people I have met online, they are really wonderful, but I think I am losing interest in the list. Not Jewel but maybe the volume of this whole thing. Does these symptoms seem familiar to anyone? Any help or comments would be very much appreciated. But please send a copy to my personal Email addy, I don't know when I will get around to the digests. Especially if anyone has any ideas on how to get back down to earth, so to speak.
