Just a little poem I wrote while walking around on watch a week or so ago. I get so bored on watch sometimes, and since the engine room is kind of loud (I wear earplugs all the time) I don't see any problems in singing to myself and making things up. This one just sort of popped out and I had to write it down...lord knows I would never have remembered it. I just have no affinity for word memorization... There once was a man Who played in the sand And was kind of bland Cause all he ate were some cans Iron was his diet And it kept him kind of quiet He never had to fight Simply look at his might Iron man, Iron man I am really just a fan Iron man, Iron man He's just a flash in the pan He would walk across the beach In search of any who would teach Anyone within his reach Would find the offer was a peach If he found a willing pawn He would ask from dusk til dawn And follow round like a little fawn Like you were the reigning kahn Iron man, Iron man I am really just a fan Iron man, Iron man He's just a flash in the pan Iron man, Iron man Catch my drift if you can Iron man, Iron man His whole life is on a can. Granted, it needs work. And it sounds like a silly song that a child would sing, but does that matter to me when I am standing in the middle of the engine room at 4 in the morning? Nope. It just keeps me awake. :) Jon Akers http://tscnet.com/~jka Naval Nuclear Propulsion Electrician (but no SatNav!) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Apr 1997 23:07:20 -0700 From: That Little Voice Inside Your Head Subject: Re: NJC: A poem... :) heehee this reminds me of a song called "Mountain Man" like from 3rd grade that goes Mountian Man Mountain Man Sing this song across the land being free ain't it grand singing the song of a mountain man :P anyhoo like a lot of rhyming! Sure, it's not written with all the praise an EDA would give her, but that's not Rolling Stone's job. I don't really know the circumstances of this FBI thing, but I don't think they would pull it up out of thin air. And I think most will agree it was hardly the "hatchet job" we were warned about. We can still write letters saying how much Jewel means to us, or whatever we want to say about her, and each of us still has our own opinions, which may or may not agree with Jancee Dunn's. NJC: If anyone's looking for an inspiring book to read, try _California Angel_ by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg. I read it a while ago so I forget the main character's name, but it'll come to me, it's something like Toni or Tori but not those, anyway, she is an angel, and she helps people in various ways, and there's a little story behind the book by Ms. Rosenberg, which I found all the more fascinating because she is Jewish. There is a bit of preconcert waffle at the beginning. Just skip to the Jewel Bit if you don't like it. Jewel Concert Report - -------------------- Royal Albert Hall - Kensington, London 25 April 1997 The Prologue Bit - ---------------- I think it is fair to say that this was a night to remember. Not just for myself and the few Jewel fans in the audience but also for Jewel herself. But before I get into detail about the concert, let me tell you about my day. I am in the middle of my first year exams at Imperial College and I seriously needed a break. To that effect, at lunch time on Friday, I took the chance and phoned the Albert Hall box office. They told me that the Johnny Cash show was almost sold out and that there was only standing room left. After much deliberation, I took the plunge and paid my #18.50 for the ticket. After my exam that afternoon, I sat and watched TV to pass the time until the concert. At 7pm, BBC's Watchdog program came on. Now, for the non-UK readers, Watchdog is a consumer affairs program. They announced their features tonight: A dodgy hotel in Cyprus and Concert ticket prices! All of a sudden, they switched to their outside broadcast which was at the Albert Hall!! They mentioned that Johnny Cash was appearing there tonight. Just as well they didn't mention Jewel because of the following onslaught that Johnny and some other famous performers were about to face. The article was about ticket prices and the length of performances. Their main culprit was Johnny Cash himself. Apparently, Watchdog's main presenter had been to one of his concerts where he appeared for only 45 minutes and was seriously out of tune. They also mentioned his support act from that concert who they claimed was previously a busker at South Kensington tube station. I only live 100 yards away from the Royal Albert Hall as I am at Imperial College so I grabbed my coat and went quickly over. Sure enough, the reporter was there on the steps of the Hall doing his article to the nation and slamming poor old Johnny. Anyway, at least they didn't mention Jewel. I got my ticket and went inside. I was told that my ticket was standing room only and that it was high up. The gallery is the highest walkway in the building but at least there was a perfect view of the stage. At 7.45pm, the hall was still half empty. A DJ from a local country music radio station came on and welcomed everyone to the Johnny Cash Concert. Then he said the words that I had been waiting to hear for months, "Please welcome to the stage, Jewel...." The Jewel Bit - ------------- Sorry it took this long to get to the actual report but hey... Jewel strolled on the stage, ushered in by a generous round of applause. It was obvious that 95% of people in the theatre had never heard of her. She was wearing a tight top and black leather trousers. The hall went dark, the stage turned green, a starfield lit up the back of the stage, Jewel picked up her guitar and said hello. She started with a song I don't actually know the name of. I think I had heard it before from Mediadome's Jewel Webisode. The Albert Hall is renowned for it's echoey acoustics but these only added to the mystery and atmosphere of her performance. There was no supporting band so it was just her in front of 5000 people that didn't know her. You had to admire her courage but she did not disappoint. Her voice was pure and accurate. The guitar complemented the melody perfectly. At the end of the song she again received a generous amount of applause. She went on to play 'Little Sister', The stage went blue. After a short pause, she started to play the opening riff from 'Morning Song'. There were a few cheers from the balcony. I think it actually surprised Jewel because she stopped playing for a second and said that she didn't think anyone would recognise the song. Anyway, she gave a great performance of 'Morning Song', again the stage changed colour. 'Don't' came next. Her deep dulcet tones resonated around the auditorium. 'Who Will Save Your Soul' came next. It was similar to the performance she gave on This Morning a couple of days previously. I didn't recognise it at first because of a new intro she had given it. Only when the vocals started did it click. Again there were a few cheers from the audience from the few people who came to see Jewel. After a minute or two of retuning the guitar, she gave a stirring performance of 'Angel Standing By'. One thing that was noticeable from song to song was the growth in appreciation from the audience. With each piece, she was winning the hearts of more people and it showed in the amount of applause she got. It was a great scene to witness. Her finale was 'Chime Bells'; a great choice considering the response from the audience. Until now, most of her songs had shown off her choral talent. Now it was time to have some fun. After a near mishap in the first yodel, she quickly regained control and gave her best during the chorus. The yodelling was harmonically perfect. When the chorus finished, cheers of delight came up from all around the hall. People were genuinely impressed with this skill. With each chorus, the cheers intensified. The song came to a climax with her hyperspeed yodelling. It filled the room, sounding almost ethereal until a final swipe on the guitar. The crowd cheered and she thanked everyone. I think as she was walking off stage, she knew that she had scored a victory. To get a response like that from a crowd who came to see Johnny Cash was no small task and she did it with style. As the lights came up, I looked at my watch. She had been on stage for only 30 minutes. I was a little disappointed but I knew then that the Mean Fiddler gig was going to be something even more special. The Johnny Cash Bit. - ------------------- Ironically, the interval was longer than Jewel's performance. I was not sure what to expect from Johnny Cash. I had heard of him from 'Ring Of Fire' but little else. The BBC's prediction was wrong. He sang with a raw, low voice and the second half lasted for over 2 hours. He left the stage occasionally to let his son and wife sing some solos. It was a pleasant surprise. The audience were wild; they had definitely come to see Johnny. Out of 2 hours of music, I recognised 3 songs. Jewel did not make a reappearance The End Bit - ----------- There's little else I can say. I don't know enough of Cash's work to comment further. It was a good show overall. Was it was worth the entrance fee? Well, I would have definitely liked Jewel to be on for more than half an hour. Perhaps even get equal time with Johnny. What I did get from it was a great taster of what I was going to hear on the 14th of May in Harlesdon. Johnny Cash made the show worth it. He certainly did not disappoint. I hope I've given you an insight into what happened at the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington, on this wet Friday night. I'll do the same again for the Mean Fiddler Gig. I might try and get tickets for the Union Chapel and whatever replaces the Garage gig. Until then..... I think the idea of Jewel flipping somebody off or telling them to F**K off only heightens my opinion of her. If she never expressed emotions or faults in any way, it would reduce my sentiments for her. 4. I was up until 4:30 last night doing homework (yes, homework in college on a Friday night) and got up at 10:00, so I may not be making a whole lot of sense, so bear with me and I'll try to do better in the future. Sincerely, Gabriel "Grendel" Cade gtc0587@uncwil.edu P.S. If you ever feel like sending me a personal email message - I don't know why you would, but it'd be cool - make the subject Gabriel or something, so I don't scan it when I'm browsing 50+ messages. _ _ O O Jewel Rocks!! - --------------------ooO-(_)-Ooo--/------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Apr 1997 11:20:36 -0400 From: Chris Phillips Subject: NJC: BST: Lori Carson Do any of y'all know a singer named Lori Carson. This is a great idea and I hope that it can progress into a reality sooner than later. I realize that I am new and do not know the "inner workings of the EDAF" or much of anything else for that matter, and I am all the way down here in FL, but I would be willing, honored, and would love to help out in any possible way. I think it would be awesome for all of us to begin to organize and connect ourselves in a sort of "EDAF web" to promote all kinds of goodness, charity, and help while having fun w/ the other EDA's. I sent this publicly b/c I think we all need to realize the potential here and act quickly before the idea becomes stale. I hope you agree. And anything I can do for anyone regarding anything I am available, and willing. :-) Love to you all! I'm going and I was just wondering if I could meet anyone... #2: Renee was also in Reality Bites. She played Tami, the girl Troy was kissing in the beginning and threw her number on the ground. I noticed her name in the credits. I seriously doubt that she is the freshman's sister in Dazed. Krap, I had a brain fart and can't remember what else I had to say.
