I thought it was a great movie, and also a superb book. Although the movie had to remove some of the author's personal stuff that happened as he was reading the book to his kid, it still was great. As for Jurassic Park, it was pretty good, but it lacked a lot of the explanation and analysis that (for me) makes Michael Crichton's books interesting. For example, the movie brushed over Chaos Theory, while the book delved into it enough that one could get a decent grasp fo the subject. I have to agree with Bill P. I heard "I Am So Ordinary" on the radio when harbinger came out in 95, and I thought it was one of the best songs I had ever heard. Then a couple of them saw her open for Sarah McLachlan in DC, and suddenly they were serious fans. If it were sung a little slower, I think it would be perfect w/acoustic guitar. Of course, I an showing my age with this thought, as this is at least a 20 year old song. More currently, how about Matthew Sweet's "I've Been Waiting" from the Girlfriend CD? He's always had such a cool way with lyrics. Finally, I saw some bits about Jewel in the Entertainment Weekly that is currently out (w/ Tommy Lee Jones and Ellen DeGeneres' "friend" from Volcano on the colver). Of course, I left the darn thing on the plane (guh!) Anyway, there was something about her on the Top 10 Albums area, with POY as the pictured CD. I really think this is getting out of control fast. First of all, I'm pretty sure People is only taking 1 vote/email address. It appears to me submitting more than one vote is a bit un-EDAlike, but that's me. :) Second, I think if people want to vote for Jewel as the most beautiful person because of her beauty all the way around, power to them. Not voting for Jewel on the grounds that some idiot somewhere might not see Jewel for her internal beauty seems a bit stupid to me. Those people exist now and will always be around as long as Jewel becomes more and more popular in the music scene. The only difference is if Jewel wins, then People will have to do an article about her, and maybe, just maybe, People will ask an EDA why they think she's beautiful and he or she will tell People that it's because of who she is, her honesty to herself in her music, and her message of hope to everyone not to give up their dreams. Third, I think a newsgroup is a bad idea with all the non-EDAs who will be posting noise to a newsgroup completely cluttering it up and making it unreadable. I think if a newsgroup is created, this list should stay as the Jewel-EDA list. Hi Angels I know that $1,000 might seem like a lot but there's a big difference between $1,000 and $382.14. I agree with you that it is alot to pay, but the price is all relative. I know there are people that spent this or more to go to the Hot Dog Fest or Lizstock. I know if I had the money and time I would definitely go for this deal and or possibly stay in Europe longer. Part of the reason I think it would be a great show to see is the size of the audience. For those of you that went to a show prior to the Tiny Lights Tour you know how amazing it can be to see Jewel in a small intimate venue. For as much effort Jewel and company put into making the Tiny Lights Tour intimate, it is impossible to make a 3,000 + seat venue feel like a 200 person show. Unless Jewel totally flops in Europe this current tour will probably be the last chance most of the people on this list will have to see Jewel in this small a venue. I know I for one would trade in the four Tiny Lights shows I saw if I could instead see one of the shows in Europe. This concert will almost definitely be the experience of a life time for those who go, especially if you travel a long distance to get there. I don't think spending $382.14 makes someone insane. It just depends what matters to you. Some people may spend this amount of money on cigarettes or liquor in a short amount of time. While I wouldn't do that I don't think spending that type of money on liquor or cigarettes makes somebody insane. I think it just depends where your priorities are and what your intrests are. Jewel appearing in the 50 Most Beautiful People isn't going to influence the opinion of any EDA's, or anyone else who really cares about her music in the first place. I know some of you are curious when tickets for Lilith Fair are going on sale, so I thought I'd tell all Portland edas, that tickets are going on sale May 3 (or 5th, but I'm 90% sure its the 3rd). For everyone else your tickets should go on sale a little later than that because the Portland show is the 3rd show Jewel is doing (It's on July 6), so I think most of everyone elses (except Seattle and Vancouver, BC) tickets will be going on sale soon, but you haven't missed them or anything (I think!). Well that's all for now. Hope that helps! Julie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 20:28:08 EDT From: jewlieb@juno.com (Julie Bristol) Subject: Lilith Fair Gathering Hi again! Sorry to post again, but I got an idea and I thought I'd share. Someone mentioned having a gathering at all the Lilith Fairs, and I thought of something. July 4th is the first date that Jewel is scheduled to play Lilith Fair (in Vancouver B.C.). I think someone in the area should arrange a gathering so that as many edas as possible are there to support our angel. I think it would be a real treat since its her first gig back on the continent (I was going to say the states, but then I realized it would be in Canada-I swear I passed Geography, I sat next to the smart guy!! ;). Anyways I just thought that would be a really cool idea. One thing though, I don't live in Vancouver BC, (I live in Vancouver, WA), so I couldn't arrange anything, but I just thought that would be a cool idea, so maybe someone from Vancouver, BC could try and set something up?!? Just my thoughts! Have a great day and weekend everyone!! I just want to post a letter to warn people about Hackers on AOL. Someone found out my password and had been using my account. Meanwhile, they were using the 800 phone number and charging alot of things on my bill. So, during that time period while they are on my account...I couldn't log on. When you log on...it didn't show this person's screenname there. So, you are clueless that someone is using your account. The only way to see if someone is on your screenname is going under keyword: screenname-delete and it will list all names under your account number. Meanwhile...I called up AOL to tell them this after seeing my bill and they said it's my responsibility...I gave out my password...BS! So this is a note telling you all to beware of AOL and Hackers. Love, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 02:55:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Batdump@aol.com Subject: Jewel is a singer indeed:Mike Hello Jewel fans. I read all the responses to the post I made a little while ago about worshiping Jewel, etc.... and some of you actually got what I said. I don't want to start any trouble(looks like I already have) or keep beating a dead topic but I have to reply to the many posts on the subject. Yes, there are many charitable organizations set up in people's names that do great work and that is all well and good. And I don't have any problem with a few more good people in the world. If you want to donate blood or volunteer or whatever, that's great, the world needs more of that. The thing that really got me was the giving her b-day a tiltle and the references to being more Jewel like. Yes she is a lovely person from everything I know about her and I'm sure you all agree with that. So being nicer and more caring is definitely not a bad thing. It's just the whole tone of it smacks of something more than "this woman is really great". Why the need to make a big deal out her b-day anyway? I can understand noticing it and maybe listening to a bunch of her music on that "most -revered" of days, but what the heck is going on here? People that you are fans of have b-days all the time, do you celebrate them all? But you say" Jewel is different, she is special." Yes, she does have a different feel to her than your standard celebrity. Most do not talk of philosophy in their interviews. And am I the only one that tires of hearing the same "hands manifest thought, we are all angels, we become what we feel" stuff at every interview? I have heard her say the same things So many times. ( I realize that probably upset a few of you, this was not my intent) You say that you think of her as your friend. Um... l would be a little scared if I was her right now. Yes, she seems friendly and personable enough but how many of you have ever met her anymore than a brief "hello, you're great" kinda thing, if even that? To take a celebrity or anyone you do not know and consider them your friend is just plain not right...cuckoo for coco puffs, ladies and gentlemen. If you were a celebrity, would you really care about the presents your fans send you? I know its a show of appreciation of their work and all but does she really need the stuff you are sending her.? That is (seems to me) why she said to do something charitable for her. Because then somebody actually benefits from the present and there is not a pile of stuff she has no use for in her mom's house. Since most of us Don't know her, we don't see her faults. She is just a person like you and me(well, alot more singing ability than me,true)and she has faults. I'm sure she gets mad and yells at people over stupid things and makes mistakes and does things wrong like we all do. SHE IS HUMAN too. But we don't know her so we don't see that, all we see is the wonderful singing poet with the brilliant thoughts and voice. So she becomes perfect in your eyes. To tell the truth, I would not normally devote quite this much time to thinking about Jewel, but I feel a need to say a few things here. So since she is perfect, all who speak out against her are naysayers who defile the truth with their blasphemous words. I don't mean to speak ill of her, but I just want to point out a few things to those of you obsessed with her. And as far as her giving selflessly, I don't think playing a free show for a fan club is really tireless devotion. It is a nice gesture and it sounds like all had a great time, yeah for you, but she is being made out to be Mother Teresa because of it. To you and me, a concert is a big deal, something that is looked forward to for weeks in anticipation. And afterwards it is talked about for days. But to the performers, they do this every night. And if you happen to meet whoever, that is remembered for quite a long time, but they meet fans all the time. "But Jewel is different, she loves us." I'm sure she does appreciate her fans, she says it all the time and that really is a good thing. But a free show or a hello is a much bigger deal to you than the celebrity. Yeah, I'll shut up now. I appreciate(really) that the responses to my earlier mail had something to say pro or con and weren't just "you are stupid" because that furthers nothing. Feel free to respond again.
