There's also a great Jewel interview in SODA back issue section, plus some additional Jewel content and articles on Silverchair and other bands and movies. I'm assuming you mean high school geometry (correct me if i'm wrong) and you're a freshman or sophomore. My 9th grade geometry teacher was really terrible, and if that wasn't bad enough, i just didn't understand geometry at all. She taught too fast and gave me my first detention for sharpening my pencil when the bell rang. I usually make A's, but geometry changed that - I consistently made low B's and C's on tests, and barely pulled an 86 in her class. What I learned to do is this - no matter what it takes, become friends with your teacher, get her to reteach you/help you with HW in the mornings, and make sure she knows that you're interested. Walk into class in a good mood, and pay attention!!!! Try this, and i'm sure you'll see an improvement in your grades. Although they never admit it, most teachers are very subjective in their grading style and can be won over with only a little positive attitude on your part. Didn't the messages about how Rolling Stone twisted her around teach you people anything? I'm more worried about the 'outsiders' that will come in. Our group here has it own growing pains as we diversify. In our current environment, we have a dilligent list owner to keep everything in check. In the newsgroups, you create a group, then it goes off and has a life of its own much like a child. Some of those children become like Jewel, others end up more like Timothy McVeigh. I've greatly cut back on my news reading since the Internet went commercial. There's too much crap and not enough content. The groups are either overrun with flamers or spammers. I'm familiar with the process of creating both 'alt' and traditional newsgroups, and both are tiring ordeals. To clarify my point from earlier: If you _do_ want a newgroup, go ahead and post an RFD (request for discussion) for a 'rec' group. The newsgroup will be better placed. However, Newsgroups are an unnecessary evil. - -- Reverend Angus Alyssa Jones's Guardian Angel avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Apr 1997 01:37:07 PST From: titletown@juno.com (Greg S Burosh) Subject: Midwest Gathering We could meet at Deer Creek in Indiana, when she'll be there at Lilith Fair like August 8 or 18 or something. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 15:28:38 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: someone proposing to create a Jewel newsgroup (fwd) On Thu, 24 Apr 1997, the emperor of smurfs wrote: > i honestly don't think a usenet newsgroup is even necessary at this point > in time. all three of the lists combined have less than 1500 members. I would wholeheartedly agree with Dave! There is rarely a sense of community, rarely an on-topic discussion, more than enough flames, trolls, spam and velveeta on Usenet. I agree Dave. The vibes are great here on this list. I've never seen anything like this sense of harmonious community on usenet where flame wars run rampant. If it works, don't fix it. There's no way a usenet group could come close to the character of the Jewel-EDA mail lists. And some pretty strange things can go in newsgroups. If a newsgroup was created, if would be in addition to the Jewel lists that we all talk on. I can understand people who regularly use the newsgroups recognizing that Jewel is an artist they want to talk about and right now there is no Jewel newsgroup. Maybe such people don't yet know about the Jewel-EDA mail lists. If they joined on they might find they've found their rightful home. Still, if they want an outside usenet group I would hope they then go about it in the best way (see Andrew's comments). I would see a Jewel newsgroup as being a place just to visit and check out, but the Jewel-EDA mail lists will always be home and the best place for open discussion and keeping of the flame (so to speak). The unique spirit on these lists would be lost in a newgroup environment. But whatever people want to do, they should pursue. We'll still be here. BTW, how IS the Rolling Stone article? Anyone read it yet? Holly Palmer has some of the best most heartfelt lyrics I have heard in a LONG time. Right now she is one of those industry secrets. She has opened for KD Lang, The Bodeans, and is now opening for Paula Cole. I went to one of the Paula/Holly shows and then NEEDED to go to a second mainly because of HOLLY PALMER. She is also a great person to talk to. She is small enough in popularity that at the right club you can have total access to her after the show. Look for a page for her coming in the near future. Right now if you go to the main Reprise page and then go to Holly Palmer's page you can listen to a portion of each song. Second is Melissa Ferrick. I have missed a couple of chances to see her live but now I can have the experience. Melissa Ferrick is now on the Hidden Water label. She has a new live CD that is available at the web site and at her concerts and also by calling 1-800-782-1484. She has a songwriting ability that can resemble the humour of the Rugburns and the next verse the sobriety of Amen by Jewel. She has amazing songs and winds them together like a warm cozy blanket. Unfortunately Melissa was dropped by Atlantic after her second album Willing to Wait was released and did less than expected. The best way to get either of her CDs is to check the used record stores. And there is also an EP cassette released in between Willing to Wait and Melissa Ferrick +1 which is the name of the new album. If you get a chance go to see her live. Here are the tourdates. Tell me if you go. I would love to hear how the show is. 4/23 Rockefeller's Houston TX 4/24 Caravan Of Dreams Ft.
