Today in gym class about 5 of us including me didn't dress which is a lot of people when you have only 20 people in your class and when this happens which is often our gym teacher "T" has lately been making us do written work. Well today he gave us our assignment which was writing "Due to the grace of Edmund H. Taveirne Middle School and the benevolence of my teachers, I have come to relize the error of my ways and bitterly repent my inappropriate decision not to participate in the enjoyable activity of physical education class under the guidance of the incomparable Mr. Zens " When we asked our gym teacher, a senile sexist pig of an old man with two fake hips and false teeth which he likes to take out what some of the larger words ment he replied that he didn't know and that if this happened again tommorrow then he would get dictionarys and have us look up the words. Then later on when he was the collecting our papers he said not to try to get ahead and copy this for tommorrow because he would have new sheets. I then asked him if he wrote it and he replied that he has people do that for him. My guess is that the fellow, Mike, who said he was using his girlfriend's access or whatever to the list, now understands that EDAs value, respect and admire Jewel -- and with good reason. It's not unhealthy "worship" or idolatry and everyone before me has covered off the points so well about the charity work, the birthday plans etc. etc. that I've nothing to add. (As far as the religious element, I imagine all people strive to Christ-like or Buddha-like or whatever in their daily lives, but no one confuses this with thinking they're the messiah or a saviour etc.) Jewel shares and represents positive values and what better reason to be on this list -- in addition to appreciation of her beautiful music and voice? I think (i'm not sure though) that this song is about a friend of her's father of when they were growing up. And yes, the father was in the KKK.<< Well, the first ten times I heard Jewel relate this story it went that Jewel was over at a friend's house watching "The Jefferson's", a black family sit-com she liked ("moving on up, to the the east side...). Her friend's father came in, turned off the set abruptly and read his daughter the proverbial riot act. Jewel was told by her friend that her father didn't want black people being shown on his TV. To my understanding, the man was NOT necessarily a friend of Jewel's father Atz Kilcher , nor even in the KKK. That's most likely "artistic license" on Jewel's part. More than likely, this bigot showed his prejudices bare-faced, unlike the confused souls who hide beneath hoods in shame and fear as they promote their senseless hatred! All the time and energy we spend on this list, and creating web pages, and making tapes, going to concerts, etc. We could be doing a lot more than just satisfying our own selfish "Jewel-mania." In fact, I think we should take a break from the list and do something completely unrelated to Jewel. I don't know, go read a book, learn something new, maybe do something useful. I don't know, something like community service. Yeah, do something charitable like volunteer at a shelter, or maybe even stop by the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Isn't that a good idea of something to do instead of raving about Jewel? In fact, why don't we pick a day where we'll all take a break from the list and we can report back on what we did? I always love to hear about the variety of people on this list; it would be nice to hear about what wonderful things we do when not discussing Jewel. Most of you know me by the name of "Crunch". Alan was recently given an idea by Jewel. I volunteeed to research it and present it to the list. This is an idea for some- thing to do for Jewel for her birthday, not because we "deify" her, but it is something that she cares about, and we care about her. If this project does not sound right for you, there have been many other options made available on the list. Please maximize your window! ================================================== For those of you that have been following Alan(MrBB) and Mike's posts recently, they have been saying something VERY big was in the works for Jewel's birthday. Well, folks, THIS IS IT. There have been SO MANY good posts recently about birthday gifts for Jewel. We are a very creative, caring, and thoughtful community of angels. So thoughtful and creative, in fact, that we came up with many more possibilities than we could possibly put into action right now. So, after the outpouring of ideas from the list, it seemed the hardest part was finding something simple and angelic. This in mind, Alan explained our wishes to Jewel's mother, Lenedra. After telling her about the many wonderful suggestions from the EDA's, Alan asked for her advice. Much to our surprise, Lenedra had an immediate recommendation! It may accomplish in one opportunity all of the things we hope for Jewel on her birthday. Jewel was recently given a letter at one of the San Diego shows that was a little different than most. It captured her attention. This is the letter: ********************************************************** April 4, 97 Dear Jewel, When you went to collect your award at the American Music Awards show, you made a point of telling people, "never give up hope...it's what got me where I am today.". Meet James Kalanick. A 20 year old without much hope these days. You see, last fall James was returning to his car after running out of gas on the freeway near PB when he was struck from behind by a hit and run driver. The accident leaves James in a quadriplegic state, requiring motorized wheel chair and full time care taker. He will need both for the rest of his life. The driver never slowed or stopped and was never identified. The family had no insurance and live on a limited income. State programs have helped the family on most of the medical bills... Which brings us back to hope. Being confined to a wheel chair for the rest of your life can drastically alter one's dreams. James worked for Baltimore Bagel Co. in La Jolla prior to the accident. Admittedly, he was carefree and hadn't figured out what he wanted to do for a living. Now, however, his dream is to gain a sense of control and independence in his life and return to a job. As his former employer, we're trying to help. James needs a van equipped with a special hydraulic lift for transportration. The total cost is around $40,000. Baltimore Bagel (changing it's name to Einstein Bros Bagels) is having a couple of benefits to raise the necessary money for this vehicle. Would you consider helping us out? .....Matt Sullivan -- Einstein Bros Bagels, San Diego,CA.>> ************************************************************** Many of the ideas that were discussed concerning gifts for Jewel did not involve money. Many, if not most of us, can not afford much in the way of a sizeable donation. Individually, our contribu- tions may seem insignificant. However, small donations from each of us will grow into a combined "EDA Gift" that will make an unmistakable difference. Some intial phone calls have been made to see how easy it would be to put this plan into action. This is what we know: 1) There are other San Diego area benefits going on for James and we can be a small part of accomplishing this very "tangible goal". 2) There are no administration people making money. No money is being spent on advertising, etc. Every single dollar will go towards the equipment James needs. 3) Donations can be sent directly to the James Paul Kalanick Trust already set up specifically for James' equipment. 4) Jewel suggested it. The support of the EDA community toward the JPK Trust need not stop individual EDAs from following through on other great ideas they may have an interest in. The JPK Trust is one very worthy goal that we can all contribute to together. Donations, both large and small, all contribute to the same goal so it doesn't matter what financial situation you are presently in. We need not, and can not, try to raise $40K. Any donation (even one single dollar) is one step closer to the goal. There is alot of people on this list, just imagine if each person donated $5. Jewel's birthday is in just over a month. Jewel has received many gifts throughout her most recent tour and often she responds to them in the same way. She asks that we give to others the hope and inspiration that we once gave her. This is a chance for us to "manifest" that wish. So, how do we do this? How do we donate a few dollars to the James Paul Kalanick Trust for a collective EDA Gift to Jewel on her birthday? After just a few phone calls, it became apparent how simple this would be for us to do as EDAs. Matt Sullivan, James Kalanick's former employer and head of the JPK Trust, is an extremely helpful man. He truly appreciates Jewel's talents and is amazed that she read the letter, let alone get a call from her fans. He had all sorts of questions about who the EDAs are and what it is we are all about. After discussing Jewel and EDAs, Matt described exactly how easy it is to give whatever is available. Each of us can send a check, however large or small, directly to the bank that is holding the James Paul Kalanick Trust (Wells Fargo Bank). Step by step, here it is: Address a check to: James Paul Kalanick Trust In the memo postion of the check write the account number like this: Acct# 6671946366 Post the check in an envelope addressed to: James Paul Kalanick Trust Wells Fargo Bank 1302 Garnet Ave San Diego, CA, 92109 To keep an up to date record of what we have given, an E-mail account has been set up. After each of us has given our small part for James Kalanick, send an e-mail to . Let us know what you gave, the date it was sent off, and the check number. This info will be used to parallel the bank's records and to give the list updates about our efforts. In this way, we can each donate a small amount ($1, $5, $20, or more) to a cause which has captured Jewel's personal attention. Lenedra recommended this as something we could do for Jewel on her birthday. Another EDA offered the idea of sending Jewel a birthday card letting her know what we are doing. She will recieve the card on her birthday while on tour in Europe, reminding her that there are EDAs doing things for her while she is out on the road! This card is in progress, as is a web page (the address to be posted soon!) ***IMPORTANT: PLEASE forward any questions that you have to a new account I have set up for this project at . ALSO, to keep our own tally of the contributions, PLEASE send an email to AFTER you have sent your check stating how much you sent. Liz, Steve Poltz's future wife, is going to keep our efforts updated from this address. Please, carefully read this post again (I know, it's long!). Any comments can be posted to the list. I have never heard Jewel say that her friend's dad was actually in the KKK. As far as I know, the song is a fictional depiction of a rebellious adolescent who reacts to the hate in her environment by doing *hateful* things that would provoke her *hateful* father, if he were to find oput about them. Unless someone knows for a fact that the "daddy" who inspired that song was "actually" in the KKK -- and I would like to know HOW it became known, if it is true -- then I wouldn't flatly make that assertion; it's not justified. My 5 cents, not a flame. - -=-Larry-=- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 23:31:38 -0500 From: dreeland@shrike.depaul.edu Subject: my new name!!! well EDAs.....i gotz me a new name!!!!!...i am Dan the midnight angel!!!!! just had to let you all know!!!!!:) Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 00:34:27 -0400 (EDT) From: Albert Sze-Wei Wang Subject: RE: The EDAGIft On Mon, 21 Apr 1997, chris a detar wrote: > i think this is a beautiful idea. I would like to add to Chris' thoughts. There was the case of Travis Roy here in Massachusetts that is similar. During his first hockey game at BU, he was knocked into the boards and was paralyzed from the neck down. A lot of people around New England gave money to his family so that he could get a special van and wheel chair and have the house redone so that he could get around. In every way, the cause Jewel is recommending we donate to is no different with one key difference- whereas Travis Roy received a lot of press coverage in New England, it appears James Paul Kalanick did not receive any publicity on the west coast- in fact most people with spinal injuries never hit the papers or make the news. Spinal injuries are devestating for the reason that nerve cells that are destroyed do not regenerate. Instead, they die and simply scar up, leaving permanently broken connections. There is research being conducted to regenerate the nerves in spinal injuries, but a method to regenerate the spinal nerves is still very far off. There is perhaps no other person more famous with a similar injury than Christopher Reeve when he was thrown from his horse. I would encourage everyone to try to donate a little to Mr. Kalanick's trust, even if it's just $1. In each of our lives, we do what we can. Even if our prayers are at times all we can offer. Maybe it's because I grew up in a different era than most of the people on this list, but I think this is way off-base. Since when is it rude to ask children to respect performers and the others in the audience who may just want to hear the performer? This is a perfectly reasonable request and basic point of etiquette. Children are just as capable of respectful behavior as anyone else, so don't sell them short. It's just that these days they are encouraged otherwise, as if self-control and restraint are bad words.
