It was so kewel to see her try to quiet the kids that way, which they primarily did. She got their attention (well, many of them, for at least a while), if she hadn't have done that, they'd have been running in the aisles, screaming and throwing things, much like some of the so-called 'adults' that ruined the show for concert goers in Providence and the Beacon Theatre (NYC) last tour. (where she would say "Shut up" or worse....atta girl Jewel!! :) For the other loud acts that played, noisy kids would have been OK and fit right in (and they did), but for a quiet song a quiet crowd is expected and deserved, even with an audience of kids (that's how they would learn, how we teach them). The nature of the song and/or artist demands a particular environment, much as golf commands a quiet crowd and football needs noise.....all just my opinion. Then, true to his nature, Sean made a wild assumption based on his natural cynicism: ;-) >>>The birthday thing and giving blood are dismissible examples of people who are just filling up neediness in their personal lives by exalting an external person.<< Sean is a bright guy (usually). But sometimes, he misses the point because he gets too wrapped up in his own preconceptions... the BLOOD DRIVE is not an example of folks "filling up neediness" in their lives, or exalting Jewel. Jewel is a "hook" here (or bait on the hook), simply providing a catalyst for folks to do something they should be -- and probably want to be -- doing anyway. The headcount of EDAs I've met on this list is climbing to the mid-300's at this point, and there are genuinely great folks here. In fact, I'd say the top 2% of our society, in terms of heart and soul. Jewel is a helluva talent, but when she DIDN'T show up at Hot Dog Fest in San Diego (and it looked stronger than 75% at one time that she and her group certainly would), I found myself happier with the company of EDAs and Steve and Stinky of the 'Burns. It was a mellower afternoon for her absence. I have seen that a lot of us are "jittery" about meeting Jewel until we do, then at subsequent EDA meetings, we look forward to something Jewel often has NOTHING to do with -- a day spent with really good friends, where you can be yourself and relax. A safe harbor in a confusing world. If Jewel does something I disagree with, I disagree (loudly). Everyone should keep in mind that she's actually TWO entities: 1) The artist/property Jewel and her various business partners... 2) The person Jewel, who has her own beliefs, dreams and desires (as do we all)... We all have such a duality in our lives -- but how many of us want to be held up and analyzed as to WHO we are in our professional or school lives, then contrasted with the PERSON we are? Not a comfortable situation, to say the least. I've had brief glimpses into both aspects of Jewel through meeting her parents, friends and fellow musicians, and through admittedly short, random meetings with Jewel herself. Much of my opinion of Jewel is based on anecdotal evidence. Musically, I've formulated my opinions based on a year of concerts, appearances and archives from her career. I can safely say that, based on my experiences, I like and respect both of these entities. But idolize? Diefy? Puh-leeze! We are ALL center stage in our own life, we just need to remind ourselves of it from time to time. Jewel's biggest impact on my life has been opening doors to meeting so damn many fine people (EDAs and other folks -- the 'Burns, Cindy Lee Berryhill and her husband Paul, Elizabeth Hummel, so many others -- that I've bumped into). And if my "name dropping" seems shallow, so be it. Here's another name for you: Sean Hooks. Damn, I'd like to meet Sean and break down some of his cynicism (and learn something from him in the process). And if Sean would give a pint of blood in the name of BROTHERHOOD, all the better! ;-) Folks want to feel involved, so we should all try to not fault 'em for that. And don't be so quick to dismiss good intentions and caring as just some shallow expression of hero worship. I'll repeat something I said last week: Anyone who didn't find this list largely due to a fascination with Jewel Kilcher, please raise your hand, then kindly leave the room for a minute. ***Other than that, I hope Sean keeps posting his insightful opinions, such as this: >>Jewel creates. She does it like no other. I love her music. I don't love her, I don't know her. I wish I did, but maybe she wouldn't live up to your expectations. I dont get upset cause I have no expectations for her except for her to remain true to her roots, to not change her music, not to sell out. Stay true to yourself Jewel and the rest will all fall into place. And know, above it all, we will be there for you as long as your music is there for us.<< Sean and me both. Although, I feel you can tell a lot about someone by the company they keep. I've been very impressed by the folks from Jewel's life that I've had the pleasure of meeting, and I strongly suspect that this "person" Jewel is as much of a gem as her names implies. ***EVERYONE on the upcoming Rolling Stone article: Like Crunch so eloquently posted, please READ the article first, then think. Then write a letter. Don't send it yet. Wait a while. Then act. Jewel doesn't need handpuppets, she needs thinking fans with clear heads. If you disagree with the article (or its approach), let them know. But keep in mind that ALL people have flaws, including you, me, and the Kilchers. The REAL problem here is how our society relishes building up a celebrity, then tearing them down in public. I think this is due to the high degree of frustration and personal dissatisfaction we have in our everyday lives. (We lower the "bar", we don't raise the expectations of ourselves.) Rolling Stone magazine is simply a cold, faceless business entity that plays up to this dark side of our nature to steal our money. =) I get a feeling that we're eventually gonna have to fix this problem one soul at a time.
