Recently there was a post that put down doing charitable work in Jewel's name. I must say, I find this a bit confusing. There are many charities that encourage donations in the name (or memory) of another person, be it a loved one or a famous person. Does the donation or work mean any more or less to those who receive the benifits of the charity?? I would venture to say no. I believe that anything that encourages a person to do kind, wonderful things to benefit others in need cannot be bad. Doing something in Jewel's name, such as giving blood, does not necessarily mean that you 'worship' her as you would a god, but can also mean that you respect her as a person. I would give to a charity in my mother's name too, but I don't worship her, I simply love and respect her. OK, so I'm not the most eloquent or intelligent person in the world. Jewel has touched me in a way that no other artist has done. I think that deserves some respect, and yes, a little admiration. I think we have chosen wonderful ways to thank Jewel for what she has given to us..... All right, I'll shut-up now. I love you all :-) Lovies, Tammy :-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 08:26:48 -0700 From: Phenom Subject: Re: Jewel being Christ-like Ok. Do you think you people can do that...hmm..maybe a few but we won't get into that ;-) Come on we or at least i have a hard time worshiping anything... :-) i just love everything and leave it at that... We as a group have found eachother through this wonderful person, and i think we adore Jewel, as we adore eachother, why when we want to give selflesly to someone who has given selflesly to us it becomes a matter of worship and deity, come on, i think you people just want to have something to talk about, ok i'm getting a little loud, i appolagize :-) Now, to explain, if we all had the oppertunity to attend the JewelStock i think people would see things differently, now i wasn't able to but i still see the selfless giving in that gesture by Jewel, she didn't have to put on a free show just for EDA's, and the people on this list who organized it didn't have to use their free time to organize it, but they did, now these people are beautiful human beings, just as everybody else on this list and for that matter, the rest of the world, so come on... as Tammy put it so well, i would donate blood in the name of my mother or family or Jewel, becasue they are wonderful people, as you all are, so if i had the pleasure to get to know some of you i would donate blood or commit myself to a charity in your name too.. We have to remember that the Nickelodeon show reached millions of people that have probably never heard Jewel say anything inspirational. Don't judge the general public from a hardcore fan's perspective. In a world so full of cynicism and pesimism, it's a joy to see Jewel stand up on national TV and have the courage to say something inspirational, like "Always follow your dreams". An artist chooses to do certain shows for different reasons, often to expand their audience. Jewel's recent appearance at the school in San Diego ago demonstrates that she cares about children, their hopes and dreams. Let's not be so prejudiced to assume, just because the show was rowdy, and may have not been to our liking, that there weren't plenty of kids who watched the show who loved Jewel's performance. I know for a fact that my 6 year old and 12 year old cousins, who watch Nickelodeon every day, are huge Jewel fans. The 12 year old has been to 2 Jewel concerts, has met Jewel twice, and considers Jewel to be her favorite artist. The 6 year old can't wait to go to her first Jewel concert. So, kids are people too, and are often far more aware than grownups give them credit for. I applaud Jewel's decision to do the Nickelodeon show and, actually, the contrast between her performance and the rest of the show only accentuated what a thoughtful alternative she is. _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ "Everything is holy! everybody's holy! everywhere is holy! everyday is in eternity! She is just a singer, a very talented one at > that , but not a Christ figure by any means Ya know Mike I hear ya, I really do. In *theory* you are correct there. However, in actuality, (in my opinion) no it's not even close. The vast majority of us (I think) do not treat Jewel as a God. Yeah sure, there are probably a few that do, but in my opinion (for what it's worth) for those that do it's better than putting some of the other artists I see up on a pedestal, although I do believe neither situation would be right. By the way, unless I missed a post, you were the first to make the Christ analogy, probably because of the way you saw what was happening with Jewel's upcoming birthday. I never saw one post from an EDA idolizing her in a Christ-like manner although some have been over zealous in defending her. (However, I myself do accept the 'blame' here a little bit by using the term "celebrate her birthday" in my post. "Recognize her birthday" would have been a better choice) However, If this were the Ben Franklin mailing list and we implored each other to fly a kite on his birthday, no one would raise an eyebrow, except maybe for the fact of questioning why there would be such a list in the first place. This country and others regularly recognize celebrity birthdays. For years there was a TV special for Bob Hopes' birthday. (You young ones, Bob Hope is a legendary comedian from before even my time ;) My point is, so what if we want to recognize her birthday? This country recognizes birthdays all the time. Where this particular stream of events all really started from anyway was that as Jewels' birthday began to approach, many different ideas of what to *give* her were sprouting up daily. Taking into consideration what Jewel has told us before, basically (paraphrasing Hiranya's comments on the matter, as told to her by Jewel) that while she deeply appreciates getting gifts, she'd rather see us concentrate our efforts on giving to others that need something so much more. So that is what we are doing, and not just now. For the wee bit over a year I've been on this list, I've seen many cases where EDAs gave of them selves to the less fortunate. Now we are just beginning to *organize* our efforts as a whole, to make a difference, starting with Dennis' blood drive and the cause that will be announced later today. I really don't see what is wrong with that. We are just going to help others less fortunate than us, and this is only the beginning. In closing (God, I sound like a politician here), I'd like to bring back something that has stuck with me. I recall a wonderful post by Dennis Harris last fall when a situation arose where a fully loaded plane crashed in India on the very day it was thought that Lenedra (Jewel's mom) was flying out of India. Jewel was in Europe at the time, and most of us knew that. Some folks misread the posts on the matter and though Jewel was flying out of India also. Considering all that, while many were rightfully concerned for the both of them, Dennis came through with what I consider his best post ever (and there have been MANY candidates for that title) Basically he said that he had made many dear friends on this list (as many of us have :) and he named a few of them. He then said if we were all on a plane, including Jewel, and it was going to go down with just two parachutes on the plane and one was somehow permanently glued to *his* back, and if it were solely his decision, Jewel would *not* get the second parachute. That's a powerful statement if you ask me. I also feel that many of the EDAs I know feel the same (He did state that as he would leap out of the plane he'd grab Jewel and hold her tightly and bring her to safety too :) Your fellow EDA, Mike ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 10:12:13 -0700 From: Sinjin Subject: Re: NJC: EDA East Coast Alert! He is an extremely talented individual and just because he has been so successful in what he does doesn't make him a bad guy. I've seen many interviews and Tiger is anything but cocky. Granted he makes probably too much money(Nike's fault), but what sports figure doesn't in today's world besides Steve Bono, and that's self-explanitory. If you want to talk cocky, let's talk Keyshawn Johnson of the Jets. You look up cocky in the dictionary and you'll find a picture of him. What's up with that BS about him dissing EVERYONE in the Jets organization except the execs, and that's because they're the ones who sign his check. If I were any of his teammates, I wouldn't have anything to do with him. He thought he didn't get the ball enough last season, let's see how many times O'Donnell (who Johnson referred to in his autobiography on 14 pages, all negatively) looks his way this year. So, if you're talking cocky, I think Tiger is a lot farther down the list than you would have him. I respect him for what he's done and feel a lot of people our age resent him for being more successful than us and at a younger age. C'mon, what 22 yr old is supposed to be worth that much? But he went out and earned it I and think he deserves it. Thanks for listening to me bitch, if you feel the urge to reply, do so privately, so as not to bother the rest of the list with it. I hope that after you read the many meanings of the term, that you'll see that "worshipping someone" is not necessarily a bad thing.... Worship: 1. Adoration paid 2. Profound admiration and affection 3. Act of respect of adoration 4. Treatment of an honoured person 5. To idolise 6. To honour 7. To perform acts of adoration Now, please note that someone using definition number FIVE in regard to Jewel would be a bit on the overkill side (not to mention that she probably would not like that one bit). However, I would gamble to say that most people on this list have respect and profound adoration or affection for her. And by recognizing her birthday, we are honoring her and performing acts of adoration. So, maybe, if you use the right definition of the word, we all "worship" Jewel IN SOME RESPECT. Please note that I do not advocate the paganistic idolisation of ANY person. This is not a request to start a cult following and any notions to the otherwise should be swiftly disregarded. I know that, with members of varying religions, it is VERY difficult to bring up a topic like this (I'm counting flames now....) without opposition, but I think the POINT is that (mostly) we do not idolise her, but respect her and admire her...... Is there any way to recommend a city that Jewel could have a concert at? She came to Detroit not long ago but I'm only 15 and I couldn't drive there plus I live on the other side of Michigan. Does anyone know if there is anyone you could recommend a place to? We have a really nice venue in Grand Rapids called the Van Andel Arena. We've had a couple popular artists come (the venue was built like 2 years ago) such as Bush and No Doubt will be coming next month, AND I HAVE TICKETS! YES! Well back to the point, is there any way to suggest a city to a member of Jewels management? andrew. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 14:28:58 -0500 (CDT) From: MADRIGAL Subject: Laura I see your posts, honey!!!!
