In response to the she's just a singer post, I kind of agree but kind of disagree too. She is an external person to 99 percent of the people on the list. We don't know her or hang out with her. What we do know is the music. If you are going to "love" "adore" or "respect" anything, respect the music, that's how she would want it I think, otherwise she wouldn't put so much of her heart and soul and mind into the music. The birthday thing and giving blood are dismissible examples of people who are just filling up neediness in thier personal lives by exalting an external person. It seems harmless enough to me. I don't deify her, most of us don't. Lots of people go too far on this from time to time but not offensively far. They aren't hurting anybody by over-loving Jewel, so let them, that's what they want to do. And as for the Rolling Stone thing, I said it was a bad thing as soon as I heard about it. But ya never know, Tracy Chapman was on the cover of RS and I always have wished for Jewel's career path to be a lot like Tracy's. They are the media. That is what happens when you go from folk singer to gold record seller, you become a product. It's said, but Jewel is becoming a product, not by her choice of course. She is being marketed by Atlantic and being used to sell mags by Rolling Stone(how much you wanna bet that there's cleavage on that cover?) and being exploited by lots of other people and organizations. That's why I predicted this whole anti-popularity thing almost a year ago. Not cause I didnt want success for Jewel, because I wanted what she wanted and I didnt want to see someone who produces music that has moved me(a not often emotionally moved guy) get hurt in anyway. Hopefully she is learning from this and is toughening up. She gotta "toughen her skin, girl" like she tells herself in one of her songs, Silver Lining I think? Anyways... Do some people forget that she is just a singer, yes. IS she just a singer, no. She is a person, a human being, one who does amazing artistic things. Bob Dylan was just a singer too then, but at the same time he wasn't. He was a cultural figure. He made a difference. Jewel is making a difference too. Dylan changed lives. Jewel is changing lives. She is moving people. She is trying and doing in a world that does not try and does not do. She is making a difference, however small in the grand scheme of things. Her music has made me think, feel, emote, and yearn. I am not the only one who has felt this way due to Jewel. Now, most of the millions of people who buy the album aren't doing that, they are buying it cause of a couple of songs, are just cause its popular. Is that a shame, no, dont even give it that much mindspent. It's a reality. An artist tries. They write a book, they inspire the spirit, they lift the mind, the compose a song, they make a film, that paint a masterpiece---THEY CREATE. Jewel creates. She does it like no other. I love her music. I don't love her, I don't know her. I wish I did, but maybe she wouldn't live up to your expectations. I dont get upset cause I have no expectations for her except for her to remain true to her roots, to not change her music, not to sell out. Stay true to yourself Jewel and the rest will all fall into place. And know, above it all, we will be there for you as long as your music is there for us. No one is writing any letters now, so there can only be misunderstanding to cause anyone to cry censorship or to attack those who would (note the auxiliary function) support Jewel and her loved ones if (conj.) if circumstances called for such a response. Jewel's mom, Lenedra, is an honest person and she has passed on the message to Mr. BB noting that she and Jewel have read the Rolling Stone article and it is unbalanced. This is an area of journalism where it is exceedingly difficult to protect oneself or remedy in a search for truth. It's not news to point out that journalists may have an agenda - -- even the best reporters these days are rarely driven by the search for truth. Media is big business, if they manage to tell the truth in the process of filing copy for mainstream publications that can sell enough ads to make continuing profits, then there can be benefits for the public as well. Most major magazines and newspapers know enough about libel laws to not publish statements that are outright fabrications or are misquotes -- things that may require them to publish retractions or apologies. The way to slant a story is to write in the gray areas, to take statements out of context or to only publish negative or critical comments about a person and to leave out positive comments that counter-balance or outweigh the negative. From what Lenedra says, this sounds more like what she and Jewel have found in the Rolling Stone piece. Rolling Stone has been known to publish biased pieces in the past -- that were unbalanced and hurtful -- as have, unfortunately, other mainstream journals. It's a fact of life in the news/entertainment racket. (In the case of Sheryl Crow, which I mentioned in an ealrier post, the RS coverage was outdone by some truly malicious coverage in the San Francisco Chronicle. Again, this sort of yellow journalism, with its lack of balance and its underlying, subjective, agenda, is not something that one can sue over. First amendment rights, which are needed in place to protect free speech, give wide license to such commentary. It's not a question of disagreeing with another's opinion -- telling only part of a story does not present the truth, even if the part you're stating is in itself not factually false. There are many sides to a human being -- to understand someone a journalist needs to present more than one side. It's a shame when they don't.) But if all EDAs stay positive and keep using all this energy for good, then good things can come of it. We just grow stronger and wiser over time -- and through adversity. Jewel's birthday is coming up and it's a great time to celebrate and be thankful for all the positive things that she and the people on this list have given us. (And if people want to take shots -- that's their life.) I was playing a classic Frank Sinatra album after I saw Jewel on Muchmusic tonight (she was wonderful as usual) and these were the first lines he sang: -- even the months right!: That's life/ that's what all the people say You're ridin' high in April/ shot down in May But I know I'm gonna change that tune When I'm back on top/ back on top in June I said, that's life/ And as funny as it may seem Some people ge their kicks/ Stompin' on a dream But I don't let it/ let it get me down 'Coz this fine old world/ it keeps spinnin' around Remember, "it's nothing without love" Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 02:12:36 -0400 (EDT) From: NHOJLUE@aol.com Subject: R&B bashing Hello all who care about posts regarding to the bashing of R&B or the bashing of any music for that matter, We (all citizens of the music listening world) must remember the timeline and development of music over the past one hundred years. Most of modern day "Pop," "Rock," "R&B," "Country," "Folk," et cetera, have all originated from the same source: early 1900's jazz. And where, you ask, does Jazz originate from? Well, I'm glad you asked that! Most of early day Jazz came from field cries (chants sung in the field by black slaves to make the hard days work pass by quicker.) In any case, the acknowledgement of the origination of music leads us, of course, to present day music; which leads us to the present "bashing" of certain genres of music. How can we (all citizens of the music listening world) fall into ignorant generalizations (now don't get yer panties all wadded up - I didn't call anyone ignorant, I simply stated that the generalization is ignorant) such as "R&B sucks." If R&B is not appealing, then simply do not listen to it. It all comes back to what we all learned in kindergarten : "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything." In any case, there are already too many labels and ways to divide human beings, so why don't we take our negative energy and, in turn, drive ourselves to the nearest homeless shelter or bloodbank and give the gift of ourselves? For those who like to help, please take note: Chris actually verified the truth of his warning with a reference to a generally "trusted" site, in this case, CIAC. While sites like these aren't neccessarily authoritative, they're far more likely to be correct than the typical "friend of a friend" "evidence" most warnings contain. (Personally, I prefer to find a couple private groups over government sponsored ones, but CIAC's done alright in the "virus" tracking arena) I'd also like to say, that while Chris is correct that there is indeed an AOL4FREE trojan, it needs to be made clear that it's not related to the AOL4FREE virus hoax letter that's circulating. If you want to pass these warnings along, always be sure to verify *for yourself* with sites like CIA or McAfee or any number of others... It's easy to write what looks like a legit referrence. Just because an artist has a soft, folky sound or happens to be popular, doesn't mean they aren't good. i don't think we should let their review get to us. Sure, i'll be with all EDA's in swamping them with corrections on their article(only if needed, of course). Maybe it would be a good thing if we DIDN'T sign letters to RS with 'EDA'. Tickets at the gate will cost more, however! That night's park concert sucks, so we'll do Jewel Kareoke (tm) in the parking lot (someone bring a guitar!) Mike Connell has already said that he can't make it as there are 26 episodes of Star Trek (and its spinoffs) on his cable system that day. To replace Mike, we'll substitute whatever we manage to smuggle out of the safari park that day... (heh heh) I challenge the west coast EDAs to dare try to outnumber us in our own backyard! I will come laden with gifts of joy and gleefulness! Of course, I will be bearing Crunch bars and peanut butter and jelly for everyone (my standard gifts for those that haven't met me)! I think that Looney Toon hats will be in order, or maybe full face masks! Bubbles will be standard issue for each EDA, not to mention laughter and silly *ss grins! Well, i hope so. It's a week after my 18th BD, so if i'm still alive, i wanna break myself into EDA happenings. (by the way, RSVP means res.....uh, it's some french crap* that means respond if you please) ~*Evan*~ (i just felt the need to dress up my name a bit tonight) *= please do not interpret this to mean i think the french language is crappie. i happen to think French is a very nice language, although it does seem to make some people sound like they have a salivating disorder exotic nature. A reviewer in a local alternative paper here in Indianapolis assumed the "Daddy" was Jewel's Dad too. I believe the Jewel FAQ makes it clear this isn't the case. This ought to be made clear as assuming that the "I" of any poem is the author (and therefore that the people she's sings about have the same relationship to "her" as 'she" does in this case) is eally dangerous. Many years ago I remember having this point drilled into my head by my HS poetry class teacher--in that case in regards to Robert Frost's "Stopping by a Woods on a Snowy Evening" (in which the "I" of the poem contemplates suicide). Correct me if I'm wrong everyone but the "Daddy" of the song is about the father of someone she knew. I imagine this was gone over on the list long before I got here, but it's probably worth repeating. On the first album, what you are hearing was my potential being limited by the ability of my hands. Which has lessened by degrees, but not alleviated, obviously. You'll hear more textures; I'm able to express myself now in more ways. Before, no matter what song I heard, it always came out as folk or western, because I only knew three chords! So that's definitely changed! I'm able to be truer to myself musically. I see the next album as a better depiction of what I am." by Jewel - --Rachel "it's a privilege, it's a background it's everything that I own it's thinking I'm the hero of this pretty white song it's thinking I'm the hero of this pretty white world" -- heavens to betsy, "white girl" my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 21:37:55 +1000 (GST) From: Gambit Subject: fellow bostonians I was just wondering if Lilith fair was coming out to Great woods in boston somtime during the summer. I'm not into the whole idolization thing, but I did want to do something for Jewel for her birthday, cause it's always nice to know that something is thinking of You the person, instead of You the Famous Singer. I'm not doing the whole charity thing, or the blood thing(even though I will in November when I'm allowed to again) but I am contributing to the whole pillow thing, because I think it's a nice thing to do. As for the Angel Day thing, I think that what everyone is trying to do with it is be EveryDay Angels, which is what we all are whether we realize it or not. I'm not sure if we need a specific day for it though. We, as "EVERYDAY" Angels, should be angel like every day, not just on Jewel's birthday.
