I waited and waited for the subway in the white cavern of the station. It finally did appear some 45 minutes later. "Problems with one of the trains," they said. Figures it would be the one I needed to get where I was going. The trip was strange. A family with 3 toddlers and an infant in a stroller. A man who tried to smoke in an area he wasn't supposed to and coughed his lungs out. A standard clique of college friends. High schoolers and college youths going out for a night on the town despite the weather. A blind married couple, the husband with an eye seeing dog. Oddly enough his dog attracted more eye than he did. A strange mix overall. All very different, all at the same place going somewhere and yet all oblivious to one another. Sometimes the world just be that way. Boston can be a strange town when it wants to, sometimes even more than little cold. But its true saving grace is that there exists some really nice people to warm your heart. Things like that make a city that much nicer to live in. Chris' dad picked me up at Savin Hill in a white Volvo. Jack is one of those really nice people the world can't afford to be without. Actually Chris' whole family, Jack, Karen, and Chris are wonderful people this world can't be without. And in their home was the ideal place for the EDA gathering. My first EDA gathering. There are many things said about the human spirit, about humanity. But to be in a room with Every Day Angels is something different altogether. How many times can anyone say they arrived somewhere and immediately felt they were welcome and cared for even though they didn't know anyone there? To be in a room with strangers and yet never really be a stranger? The world should be this way just a little more often than it often is. But its those rare occasions when it really does happen that make events like these truly special. Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel were both totally and completely wonderful. There's something utterly beautiful and passionate about music performed live- I saw that first with Jewel and again with Cindy and Elizabeth. What was perhaps most cool was that they were as amazed by us as we were amazed by them. Sometimes the world can be a wonderful, comforting place- if even just for a few hours. Like Freud said, sometimes a fruit really is just a fruit walking to San Francisco talking about Stephen Hawking and radio astronomy at the Goodwill Store truth is stranger learning about Diane of the Moon, Eloise, Steve Poltz wishing he was a man watching Elizabeth and the EDAs eating all of the Snyder's jellybeans missing the majesty of the Ocean, nature, redwood trees, but there was a sublime place here in the cauldron of this dark and stormy night. It was wonderful meeting all the EDAs (please forgive me- I still don't know all of your names!)! It was great meeting Chris the organizing angel, his parents, Phil the Video Angel (the Jewelstock angel guy and wonderful EDA who drove Bill and me home), Bill the quiet angel, Alan the DAT angel (Oh my god, that was Mr. BB!! I just realized this as I read his post while I was composing this message! Hi Alan!!!), Eric who with Alan knew tons about Cindy and Elizabeth and so could make requests , SD the Angel from Long Island, and Dennis Harris of the Harris Brothers! I'll make a more asserted effort to learn all of your names next time- not to say the least to try to be a bit more perceptive. :) Suddenly seeing faces from email addresses to real life has been a remarkable experience. As Alan pointed out in his post and in which I whole-heartedly agree, we should definitely have these gatherings more often. There was an incredible warmth of spirits I have known no where else in a place where many of us met for the first time. To be a strangers and yet simultaneously not strangers was... absolutely wonderful. Thank you Larry, Cindy, Elisabeth, Chris, Jack, Karen, Alan, Eric, Dennis, Phil, Bill, and everyone else who's names I've forgotten for a wonderful evening! Hi all, Hope you all enjoyed seeing Jewel on the Nick Award show tonight. Did any of you notice what was going on before Jewel got introduced? After the camera cut away from whoever was accepting the award on stage, it went to an audience shot. During this time, Rosie started talking fairly faintly but apparently the audio guy didn't notice that her microphone was on. Anyway, Rosie is saying "I just need to know the name of the song. I need the name of the song." The show was live so the camera went to another audience shot and then finally went back to Rosie, who then simply said: "Singing the number one song in the country, You Were Meant for Me, here's Jewel." Then, she went on to say "I really love this song."--the song she didn't know the name of a few seconds earlier. Anyway, I just thought that it was pretty funny. Any comments? (It makes me wonder just how honest Rosie is all the time...usually I assumed that she was really into what she talked about.) BG BTW, Jewel looked and sounded great. He thought the son= g was great. The tape continued to=20 play. Silence. A woman=92s voice mid-tone. It was Jewel. I asked, "Did y= ou just put another tape on?". "No", he=20 answered. "I think you just copied your demo over a Jewel concert". Not s= o great. But when did I tape the=20 concert? November 1995. I am sure of it. Jewel conversation with the audi= ence confirms it.=20 "I=92ve never heard any of these songs before", Igor said. We continued = listening to some rare recording. And as=20 concert completed the tape kept running recording crowds out the door, my= girl friend and I to the car. Girl=20 friend complaining of my driving prowess through the winter fog. Igor was= getting a voyeuristic thrill. =20 Later I had found the first tape the opening. Some thing to add to my ori= ginal Shiva Diva Doo Wap tape. One of the most significant takes from this tape occurs when Jewel announ= ces when her VH-1 duets show with=20 Melissa Ethridge and on the same night her special on TNT of the Wizard o= f OZ. Also, the same night that she=20 had play at SDSU that she asked if Joan Osborne was there yet. Apparently= she had played SOMA not far from SDSU=20 and had promised Jewel that she would stop by.=20 One last thrill is that she asked people to call up an request "You Were = Meant for Me."=20 Offer to trade. Anyway the recording is fair to good condition (copied to= exclude the infamous demo but can be=20 modified to have my demo copied numerous times at random throughout). No = offer to high or lavish to be=20 considered. Also=85 Glossy Photos of Jewel at the Innerchange at her very last show a= t that venue in January 1995. That's the take I got on it, I could be wrong. It might be a little hard to understand, though cause I'm a wierdo. Anyway, I hope I clarified this for you. She was travelling around Detroit with her record company rep, meeting various record store managers for the day. I found her at her last morning record store stop, along with her guitarist Bill Bell and some record reps. The first thing Tara said was "look what I just bought!" and pulled out Patty Griffin's 'Living With Ghosts'. :) So we went across the street to a restaurant, a funky place with healthy blender drinks, exotic salads and interesting sandwickes. Tara is a real storyteller, and she talked about the crappy meals they had been forced to eat on the Ashley MacIsaac tour, and how she and Bill spent all their money on exotic meals in LA and New York just to get away from the Triple J truck stops Ashley's band loved so much. She said they dubbed the Ashley MacIsaac tour the "Rise Above It" tour, and this one is the "Wing It" tour. So between all the fun stories about road life, exotic meals and record company meal tabs, Tara had some cool info about how things are going. First of all, she's only on the Paula Cole tour for 5 dates, then she goes back to Toronto to start doing demos for the next CD. Meanwhile, she's been working on some projects in LA that might land her a slot on a tv series next year, so stay tuned for that. And she will be on some of the Lilith Fair dates this summer. Besides playing guitar with Tara, Bill's other gig is playing for Tom Cochrane (Life Is A Highway). The tour Tom did last fall, with Tara opening, was recorded across Canada for release as a live album, and that comes out this July. It will actually be a very good CD I think..the show consisted of very cool, updated, unplugged-style versions of Tom's best songs, and was excellent. The first single is a song called All The King's Men, which is actually the duet Tom and Tara sang together. Let's see, what else. Tara went on and on about how much she likes an artist named Ben Harper, and how his show is the "best she has ever seen". The record distributor guy who was with us agreed, saying he has seen him 6 times and he is awesome. Ben plays here in July 6, so I am definitely going to check it out. I think that's about it. Except I lost my RayBans at the restaurant. SIBTW I guess. And I spent half the day playing hooky from work, so I have to go spend half my Sunday catching up. But hey. ttyl!
