A Great Big Hello to Eric, the Branches of the Tape Tree, and all the EDAs!!! i've listened to the EDA cover tape 3 times today since i've had to do some dubbing. i am very impressed with the tape. i wanted to take a second to publicly thank Eric for all of his hard work in getting this project off the ground. i also want to thank Katie McCurry for originally coming up with the idea for the tape. i must say that i never really liked the song "Carnivore" until i heard Katie McCurry's wonderful version of the song. i am also very impressed with Angela DiIulio's contributions to the tape. my roommate brian has been listening to the tape while i am dubbing it, and he thought Angela's version of "Been Down So Long" was wonderful. he thought that Angela should go professional! i can't wait for debut albums to be released from both Katie and Angela :) Tom Proven has definitely put a new spin on "flower" and "angel needs a ride" ... and Tom's Medley is very cool and offers incredibly different interpretations of some songs. i'd like to personally thank all of the EDAs who contributed to making this tape. it is truly a treasure :) :) :) peace, dave *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Dave DiCicco peaches@dmapub.dma.org on the way up --- i felt clean driving along in a walking dream the rollingest hills i'd ever seen felt like the best me i'd ever be --- peter mulvey *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 17:48:23 -0400 From: Andrew Chandler Subject: JEWEL QUESTION Is there an address where us EDA's can write to Jewel besides the album address? I really want to send her a birthday card. Also, is there an phone number to call and leave a message for her? I've noticed that she has said in several interviews that she has heard from people (who like her) from her answering machine (that one story about the guy who was trying to quit drugs and we kept listening to Amen). So, to put this in a better way, is there an address to write to Jewel besides the album one that we can be sure she'll read the mail from, or a phone number? Thanks, Andrew. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 18:00:32 -0400 From: "Terrence R. Williams" Subject: Contest Formats, etc. Okay, since my format gathered not a SINGLE complaint about being unfair, I will share EXACTLY how it worked. Note that it really doesn't matter to me if people want to use this, but it is there and can be used if people want it and it is the best idea I could come up with at the time. 1. I had an item to give away (Laura, I promise I'll mail it soon) 2. I made a web page format (this wasn't all though, so keep reading) for users to enter their name and a 4-digit number. 3. Wrote a script that picks a random 4-digit number (and keeps it secret until it's time (this keeps me from knowing the number in case ANYONE wants to tell me that I'm giving the number to my friends)). 4. (thanks to Mike Connell's suggestion) I made an EMAIL FORM for entries by people that don't have web access (which is a pretty large number from all that I can gather). 5. Winner was the CLOSEST to the chosen number. Didn't matter if they went over, just who was closest. 6. On chosen day, script posts the number as well as the winner's name. Now, I did not come up with a method for breaking any "ties" that could have arisen, but I figured with 10000 numbers, it's gonna be pretty rare (although it is entirely possible). in fact, the winner (Laura Capello) was off by several numbers. Anyways, this got 150-200 entries and required minimal work. So, now that I've inserted my ideas, I'm sure SOMEONE doesn't understand why email contests aren't particularly fair. 1. Unless you're allowing AT LEAST a week for people to enter, not everyone will have the opportunity to enter. 2. "First Come, Winner" method is TOTALLY unfair. As Thirza pointed out earlier, you really only have a chance if you're on the loose-mail list and online at the time it is posted (and even then you may not win)....... So, hope my input was useful. If anyone wants to give it a shot, leme know. Stephanie Kartopoulos (sp?) had asked if it could be password protected. The answer is yes, if it needed to be. I wonder about this though: If you wanted to win, why would you tell people outside the list about it? Of course, I guess you could get friends to do it, but unless it's STL or something of similar value, that's pretty rediculous.... Anyways, just my thoughts. Hope it was helpful..... Just imagine...The Wallflowers playing the backup to "Carnivore" or "Sometimes It Be That Way." I know alot of you like her just acoustic solo...I do too, but I think she sounds even better with a band. Except on certain songs of course it is better by herself. Just a random thought. Hmm...I was also imagining what it would be like to sit down and watch Jewel and say....John Lennon have a conversation...now that would be kewel. What would they talk about? The point of a contest is to pick a winner. Now, this can be done by strictly random means (picking a number), which has its place, but then I have to look at the contests I've entered through this list and the wonderful ideas that have come from them. There was one where the winner was the person who wrote the best list of ways to improve the list. One I just did this morning eventually led to why Jewel is so important to me (and made me realize she's way more important than I thought she was). These contests are tremendously creative and help to further Jewel appreciation, for the most part, something that random number contests and "The first five people to reply" don't... So, even though I prefer the essay-like contests, we have to also remember that it's not our stuff to give away. If I have stuff to give away, I should be entitled to give it away to whomever I please, n'est-ce pas? Maybe I don't have time to hold an essay contest and read through pages of emails... Or maybe I want to make sure my stuff gets into the hands of somebody who will appreciate it, not some random person on the list... It's from her "Hard Rock Live" concert, and it's very well done. I don't think that it's the exact same thing that we saw on the original concert--it looks like they "re-mixed"(correct term?) the camera angles etc. It's a very good video, as is the regular ("studio") video that always gets played. Very noteworthy in my opinion to have even *one* good video for a song (most videos aren't very good IMHO, & music in general would be better off without them, but it's too late now) much less two good ones. I'd been meaning to ask this for some time, so I might as well now--in the "regular" YWMFM video (the all-blue one, the one with two chairs--> one chair, etc.), the director is listed as Lawrence Carroll. Is he any relation? That's very well done, has he done any other ones? I was just wondering. Hate it when a music video ruins mental pictures that I might have had of that song before I saw the video, but if that's gonna happen might as well do it well :) Greg "Pray for the dead. So > my question is, does anybody know what this song is or who it's by? it's "Angel" by Jimi Hendrix. it's quite a beautiful song. she sang it in new york, too. here are the lyrics in case anyone's interested. "Angel" by Jimi Hendrix Angel came down from heaven yesterday. She stayed with me just long enough to rescue me. And she told me a story yesterday About the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea. And then she spread her wings high over me. She said she's going to come back tomorrow. And I said fly on, my sweet angel Fly on through the sky. Fly on my sweet angel Tomorrow I'm gonna be by your side. Sure enough, this morning came on to me Silver-winged silouhette against a child's sunrise. And my angel, she said unto me, "Today is the day for you to rise. Take my hand, you're gonna be my man. You're gonna rise." And then she took me high over yonder, Lord. And I said fly on, my sweet angel, Fly on through the sky. Fly on my sweet angel, Forever I will be by your side. eric :) - -- Crash Boy's EDA Page --- http://thespis.com/crashboy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 23:15:17 CST From: tw Subject: Re[2]: New VH1 YWMFM Video - --snipped a question about Lawrence Carroll-- Yup, he directed the Counting Crows' "A Long December" and one other new video, but I don't remember the title or group. They were incredible together! Jacob and Jewel sing an excellent "6th Avenue Heartache" duet. When I saw them in DC, it was obvious that they had hardly practiced together, and yet their harmonizing was breath- taking! =) There are recording of this available . I believe Jeweltides contains this duet (someone correct me if I'm wrong. =( I haven't had the time to send out my tapes yet...) =) Crunch PS =) To those waiting on my tapes and other things, I promise that they will be in the mail next week! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Apr 1997 01:00:03 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: Letterman...
