Phil designed the robed angel with guitar used on the JewelStock tees and Larry's large heavy stock EDA posters. The JewelStock web site logo, various button designs and logo on some of the tree tape j-cards that use the less literal "schmoo" EDA angel design was done by myself. Always obtain permission from ANYONE before using or duplicating their design...NEVER assume they will be happy that you used it for a "good cause"...I'd say that goes for altering any j-card designs produced by Carolyn (truthseecr@aol.com) or myself as well. ;-) - -- Dennis ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 02:54:50 -0400 (EDT) From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: THE PERFECT EDA GIFT TO JEWEL! There have been many excellent suggestions as what to do for Jewel's upcoming birthday. Guitar picks, original poetry, donations -- all great ideas, but as Mike Connell posted earlier, Jewel routinely requests that gifts NOT be given to her, but for her angels instead to help one another - -- and others -- in typical EDA fashion. While these other cool projects are also underway, there are two that seem to fulfill Jewel's wishes: list support for a worthy cause that Jewel has recently endorsed (details are currently being worked out and will be announced very soon), and another project I'd like to announce right now. You know, a large part of being an EDA is not only talking the talk, but "walking the walk". We support each other, and enjoy each other's company immensely (if you haven't yet, you will one day!). Being an EveryDay Angel also means helping your fellow human beings, in every way possible. And while some of us may not have the finances to support a donation program, we all have something that is precious to over three million folks in the United States every year -- blood plasma. What could be more personal and giving of one's self than donating blood so that others may live? Talk about the ultimate in giving yourself to others! You actually become part of another human being. Think about that concept for a minute... And on the practical side, it certainly fits Mandy's suggestion that we should find something that anyone can participate in (and afford)! ;-) So, here's an EDA challenge for the entire list: Donate a unit of blood to your local blood bank between now and Jewel's birthday (May 23rd), and watch your aura glow two full levels brighter (guaranteed or your blood back in a cup)! Then forward me your name and location, and if you want, your photo. I'll add donors names and photos to a very special birthday card for Jewel and see that she personally gets it upon her return from Europe. I imagine this will simply again confirm what she already knows about her EDAs: we are indeed SPECIAL SOULS WHO GET THE POINT OF HER MESSAGE! :-) Every three seconds someone needs blood. Approximately 40,000 units (pints) of blood are required each and every day in the United States. Your donation gives an opportunity for survival to accident, burn and cancer patients. Now this might be a total stranger you save. It might be a friend, family member or another EDA. It might even be yourself! Annually, over 12 million units of blood are donated to benefit over 3.6 million patients. And certain types of blood supplies routinely run dangerously low. Frozen plasma lasts a year. Refrigerated blood has a shelf life of 42 days. Some blood components last only a week. You can routinely safely donate a pint of whole blood every eight weeks. But you've got to donate that first pint to get started! And you'd be surprised at how good it feels, knowing that you're unselfishly making a difference. I mistakenly thought for a long time that a blood sugar condition prevented me from giving blood, until I discovered it was only the lead in my *ss that prevented me from giving blood! ;-) Now, I've met over 300 of ya'll face to face over the past year, and I expect to hear from all of you. For the 600 I have yet to meet, I'd love to add your names to this project. Let's do it! It's the most personal donation anyone can make. And here's the Harris tip of the day: if you're smart, you can get free cookies, orange juice and a sandwich as well from the blood bank (which saves on your food bill)...which enables you to save up for the next EDA gathering, making you happier, healthier and wise(r)...which creates MORE blood to donate...which...well, you get the picture! To kick this off, Crunch and I have already donated the FIRST TWO PINTS (and survived just fine, thank you). See you on the stretcher! - -- Dennis (always on the bleeding edge of EDA projects) Harris More information on blood donation and a listing of nationwide centers is available at the web site: http://www.americasblood.org (Do you think they have drive-in blood banks in California?) Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions! And thanks for considering participation in this drive. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jan 1997 01:19:06 -0800 From: enstrom@pacifier.com (Don Enstrom) Subject: The Day Of The Angels -- May 23 Hey all, i am still new at all this and pretty pathetic too. i don't even know what EDA means!! but that is not the point. The point of it all is to celebrate one of the great musicians to grace our plant. First, i am not Don Enstrom, i am his son Danny (and a HUGE music lover). The idea of the pic with the angel on it is a good idea. But, i still think that we should all write poems with a small little note on the side telling her what her music and poems mean to us. The blood thing is totally cool i am all for that, except that i am not old enough to give blood and i know that i am not the only one out there. I think we should make May 23 a "volunteer" day where we could either give blood or go and do somthing in our own communities like volunteer at a homeless shelter or be a mentor to somone. This way we can not only cover the entier U.S. with our efforts, but also all the areas of people that are less fortunate then ourselves or people that need our help. I don't know jewel but i think that she would like this. JUST AN IDEA, but we could call it "The Day Of The Angels". But instead of telling you about the show, I'd like to tell you about something that happened. The San Diego show was the only show I got to see on the tour. It was also the first time I got to meet Dennis Harris. For those of you that have met him, you know how powerful of a moment this must have been for me. Standing in front of me was the legend, the founder of the Harris Bros, my mentor. As president(self appointed) of the Harris Bros. fan club, this was a very special moment for me. He is skinny, scrauny, bearded, longhair and unkept looking. His eyes are clear and he looks through you instead of at you. Those eyes disguise the crazed personality behind them. He is truely crazy. He is the only person that I have ever met that talks as much as I do. After looking closer, I finally realize who he looks like. All he needs is a crown of thorns. At several times, he would come over to me and say "we have to talk" in a very serious way. On one occasion, he pulled me aside to talk about a trouble fellow EDA and how we should help him. Whenever I discussed other EDAs, he could only talk about the good in them. I had six tickets in the fourth row. Sitting with me were Erick Garske, Luna, Erik and Vanessa. I felt very priveledged to give the best seat to Dennis. He sat next to me closest to the center of the stage. We were stightly to the right of the stage. So as I watched the show Dennis was always in my side view. He never stopped talking, he had lots to say about every song. But everything went quiet when Jewel started to sing Adrien. It is my favorite song. I was very touched by it. As I looked at Dennis, I could see the glimmer of a tear rolling down his face. he didn't know I was watching him during this very personal moment. He took his glasses off and wiped the tears. I wanted to give him a hug because I too was moved to tears. Dennis has a heart. He is filled with compassion. He is sensative. I feel everyone would benefit from meeting this special person. I suggest that we work on another gathering. Lets call it HarrisFest. And if Jewel feels like she would like to come, I think we should let her. If we cut his hair and shave him, Dennis could also be confused with another Jewel favorite, Steve Poltz. Or maybe we can all have our own logos. ^_^ An EDA by any logo is still an EDA. :) Incidentally are there still Jewelstock shirts for sale? I wasn't interested in one before, but when I saw the cute little logo, I became interested. :) Albert Wang bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 13:11:28 -0600 From: bruce Subject: Re: Oiuja's bought in store bruce wrote: > > Kellyann D. Sneak Preview Hi everyone: I recently wrote a 12,000+ words (!!) feature about Jewel (and the history of the world, practically) that's going to be published by an on-line magazine (SODA) in two "acts" -- the opening act should be up on their site (@ ) in the next few days. The article is called "Your Sister Jewel/Studies in Love # Blah blah blah" and any interested EDAs can have a sneak preview of the opening act -- it's up on one of my own web-pages @ (NB this is a temporary site only and once the article is posted to the magazine's site it will have a different layout and all the hypertext links will work! Right now six links -- Rolling Stone, Details, Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls, Ferron and Shoot the Piano Player won't work. If anyone knows about these things and can tell me how to fix these links, I'd sure appreciate it!) The "opening act" sets things up for the upcoming "main act" about Jewel and her songs and poems. (That'll appear in SODA's next issue.) I aim to include hypertext links to every Jewel site in the web by tagging Jewel's name almost each time it appears in the article -- so that every web page is like another star in the Jewel universe. I think I have located all the Jewel sites and pages and their URLs but if you have a Jewel page and it's not linked in the first part of the story, you can e-mail me with the URL details just to make sure that I don't miss it in the main act to come. Thanks! This Jewel article's written for a general audience but I hope EDAs on this list will enjoy it and find it worth reading, too. It's what Jewel inspires me to think about and feel. Now back to the birthday plans... This is a >standard rule for any piercings not don by a doctor or with a gun(ear >piercing) I want to do something though. What can I do? Well, it looks like you took yourself out of this drive Kellyann, but there's no reason you can't resume donating in November! Your post brings up a very good point -- there are several situations which will prohibit you from giving blood, including a really obscure one that almost sent me home! It seems you can't take aspirin, or any blood thinning medications at any time during the three days before you donate. I had a headache out in San Diego at Hot Dog Fest (too much time in the kitchen, I guess), and Larry gave me an aspirin -- FOUR days before I went to donate (close call, Dr. Greenfield)... Participants in this drive will want to contact their local blood bank a week or so before they plan to donate and ask what other restrictions there are, just to be safe. Speaking of safe, the blood bank organizations also claim that the nation's blood supply is the SAFEST it has ever been! They run a dozen screening tests on it, just to be sure... Another side benefit of donating is that they test for various blood problems, and will get back with you if they find something. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, ANGELS. We need to take care of ourselves so we can be around to help take care of each other! If it looks like you can't donate, don't despair...just find some other way to help out in your community. Like they say, "Think Globally, Act Locally!" And there is that other "Jewel-encouraged" project to be announced later this weekend... - -- Dr. Harris and his All-Star Leech Band =) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 15:36:25 -0400 From: "Earl Bartlett" Subject: please ignore Just wanted to see if I'm able to send mail. There have been big threads on the Wiccan religion and Chelsea Clinton. My best advice is hit the delete key when you don't wanna read it. If not, consider switching to the digest or news-only version of the list. Myself, I only read about half of the messages on this list. A note to web page designers: It'd be great to include ALL the information on the Jewel Mailing list. This includes info on digest and news-only versions as well. Your best bet is probably a priority mail envelope (those stiff cardboard ones) for $3 (one of those stuff anything in this envelope for $3 anywhere in the US deals). Just make sure you pad some stiff cardboard inside for protection and it should get there ok. You might also want to write (or get one of those stickers) that say "Photograph, do not bend." (I am of course assuming your artwork is small enough to fit in one of those). What I normally do is: Artwork in slightly larger (but mostly the same size) Manilla envelope with cardboard back. This prevents shifting of the work around in transit and hence smudging things up. Manilla envelope in Priority envelope. Write or get the Post office person to use his/her stickers about it being a photograph, don't bend. Priority Envelope sent off for $3. Good luck! :) Albert Wang bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #277 ***************************
